It's been ages since I've been there. My dear departed sister, God rest her soul, celebrated her 18th birthday at the Fiesta Pavilion right past the Lobby Lounge. Thank you for showing The Grand Dame. That's what the Manila Hotel was called back in the day.
New subscriber here. I'm an American woman living in Cebu province. I love the Manila Hotel! My Filipino husband and I have stayed there a few times in the past. The decor is fab!! The rooms are very plush, with an old school sort of Austin Powers vibe. I have an old souvenir book that shows all the famous stars that have stayed there in the past. There breakfast buffet is great I remember. I'll never stay anywhere else when visiting Manila! We could see the pier, and you could see the big passenger boats that arrived. Strolling around the surrounds were wonderful. I'll never stay anywhere else when visiting Manila! Thanks for sharing!
...and so you shall, Mr. Marshall Butters! I'm a Filipino watching from Toronto and came upon your beautiful vlog rich in history and heritage just today and I'm so grateful for you showing people around the world about our Philippines. Great to see you at one of Asia's grand hotels! I had my wedding reception there back in '95! Good to know Manila now has a restaurant week. Enjoy & Stay safe, Marshall
My Dad is from Urdaneta, Pangasinan. He joined the US Navy and he was living in the States raising his family. As a special treat, I purchased tickets for him and I to visit his homeland back in August 1978. We stayed at the Manila Hotel for 3 weeks during which I met dozens of relatives, including my Lola (grandmother) for the first time. This video brings back all those beautiful memories while staying at the fabulous Manila Hotel! I even survived my 1st Typhoon there! It's a cherished lifetime experience I shall never forget. 💖💖💖
I really wished that travel vloggers who come to the Philippines, and those travel vloggers who already are in the Philippines (especially the ones I follow) would do a dedicated historical travel vlog of at least 1 of many places in the Philippines that are great or important in history, but people, including Filipinos, haven't even heard of. Anyway, I have to say that you're really good at this. You picked one of the most interesting places in the Philippines and probably the world. I'm pretty sure that there isn't any tv documentary about this hotel and it's history, let alone, a youtube vlog. Unfortunately but gladly or hopefully this is only PART 1 of this historical travel vlog, so you really really must return to this hotel.
You are going to love their buffet! Stay for at least one night if you can. Their rooms are a bit old (unless they renovated lately) but very bright and spacious. I recommend that you turn off the air con and open their big floor-to-ceiling windows. You'll forget that you are still in 21st century Manila.
In 1978, we had our honeymoon in this hotel. It looks quite different from what I can remember back then. In 1977, when we were building the Philippine Plaza Hotel as construction managers, (it is now known as Sofitel) in the reclaim area (where Cultural Center, Folk arts Center and the PICC buildings), the hotel was being remodeled. Of course it was construction, we kind of know what is going on on Imelda Marcos projects, there was an accident during remodeled. Can't remember the details from so long ago. The architects of this building was Locsin, also the architects of the Folk Arts Theater, Cultural Center and PICC.
Definitely the next host of an upcoming show/vlog Life of the Rich and Famous in the Philippines! Marshall, you're such a story teller who has exquisite vocabulary in describing an event and location. You made Robin Leach an inferior host. The variety of places you went to and foods that you tasted for us, are so well stratified. From the oddest street food and hidden restaurant of Binondo, the ritzy part of Makati and the GBC to the top establishments such as the Manila Hotel; you have both graced and humbled yourself in presenting the exquisite and mundane. Thank you so much for creating a channel that I now subscribe with passion and interest. Thank you for having a show that a Filipino Canadian can appreciate without the hypocritical Filipino baiting that most foreign vloggers do. You're one of a kind, Marshall. I'm looking for more of your very interesting vlogs.
Marshall, there's no doubt about it - you were born to live in the lap of luxury! I can see in the gleam of your eyes that you have found your true nature - classy, exquisite and dare I say, glamorous. The 5 star hotels and resorts in the Philippines don't know it yet, but they should be calling you and offering you to stay with them or invite you to their buffet to hear your discerning and insightful feedbacks, with no non-sense honesty and Pinoy baiting. You're one of only few vloggers that when they say "how is this possible", they really just meant your "i enjoy this"! And please next time, let the Manila Hotel take you a photo inspecting the Heritage photos and get them to hang it up the wall! You are as a celebrity in our eyes! 😇
Thanks Marshall for featuring The Manila Hotel in this vlog of yours. What made Manila Hotel far more different from any other hotels in the Philippines is that aside from showcasing smorgasbord of food and drinks, it also covered some historical events most especially in the American War era in the Philippines :-)
Visiting the Manila Hotel surely brought a lot of memories for the many occasions I've attended there. Most of the Rotary district conferences (2-3 days' event) were held there...the past 2 decades from my term as a Rotary Club President in 2002-2003. In between I've attended several wedding receptions there as well as birthday celebrations. In the late 70s to 80s, me and my group of friends watched and listened to live shows if famous musical bands which played there weekly. Stepping into the Manila Hotel gives me great pride as a Filipino due to the historical attributes and rich heritage this magnificent hotel stand for.
Hi Marshall, we got so excited when we see your new vlog, we already had an experienced having a family lunch there at Manila Hotel a long time ago at their buffet section and it was a nice family bonding with my two sister, brother in law and sister’s kids, hope you enjoyed ur time there, happy to see you again with your Manila Hotel eating session ❤️ stay safe 🌷
Don't underestimate the power of ..... the Knightrider! (As David Hasselhoff shall likely be present.) !!!! Hahahahah! I think I've been to that hotel twice, already. Thank you very much for this video. This hotel is my home away from home introduced to me by my father, who stayed at the hotel numerous times. I miss staying there so much. Again, thank you for the visuals!
Thank you so much Marshall....All the years I've gone to the Manila Hotel with family I never knew about the room with pictures.....So enlightening!!!!😊

Being poor in the Philippines, I’ve always admired this famous historical hotel and the famous people who have stayed in it. I always think and plan of staying in that hotel in one of my visit back home to the Philippines.
Thanks for the tour of this grand historic hotel. I'm planning to stay there in a few weeks' time and also walk around the Intramuros area to see the Spanish forts. I've been living in the Philippines for 13 years, so it's about time I checked the Manila history which I find so fascinating. It's great that they found the WW2 Japanese shipwreck Montevideo Maru this week that had Australian POW's onboard. Good to pay respects for ANZAC day tomorrow 🍻
Thanks Marshall for touring us in Manila Hotel, Fabulous, Beautiful, Full of History, Wow their Burgers is Huge and looks Yummy, I enjoyed all your blogs. Stay Safe, God Bless, Love and Prayers for you, From San Francisco!🙏🙏❤️💕😘

@@marshallbuttersvlogs6880 Yes you did, I was next to David Hasselhoff.......he really made the Wall of Fame? Honestly, I didn't know that there was a museum there.
My parents told me that the Manila Hotel served as the official residence of General Douglas MacArthur and his family, they stayed in the penthouse up until the Japanese occupation of Manila. It is also known as the “Address of Prestige” in the Far East to prominent people-presidents, royalties, public figures etc ...
My god the operation Mgr doesn’t know famous guest that visited and stayed in this hotel. A classic snack in a nostalgic place , magnificent short tour of the place. Didn’t know that they had their own pier. Next stop fine dining right?
Douglas MacArthur own home, he actually lived there for many years. I think it was named MacArthur suite now. It has a large photo of him on the wall. I've been there at the hotel as a young 11 years old in the 60's, getting prepared to come here to the U.S. (believe it or not I came by myself, first class.) I was taken care of by the plane crew.
I remember having lunch there at Cafe Ylang-Ylang with my mum and my brother who worked there as a chef but migrated here in Sydney. The grandeur of the lobby awed me. I remember the 3 old chandeliers before they were replaced by 5 new ones. Hope to visit TMH this April if travel situation gets better.
The rest of the world is slowly opening up but Manila seems to still be stuck on Pandemic mode even with much lower Covid rates. It's so frustrating not being able to visit my friends and family there.
Because rich countries have hoarded vaccines? Only recently, soon to expire 40million vaccines will come from the US, thanks to ADB for the loan to buy these vaccines.
@@vitrarom4468 Why are you blaming other countries?? The CORRUPT Philippine government only wanted the Chinese vaccine to be used on Filipinos. Duterte made sure of that.
I think it's been called "The Grand Old Dame of Asia". I remember a dinner date at the "Cowrie Grill" which was decorated with 7,000 plus with 7,000 plus cowrie shells and there was Cafe Ylang Ylang with their mouth watering authentic Pinoy merienda.

The Manila Hotel is one of the very few hotels in the world that is very rich in history. World leaders, royalties, world celebrities, and famous generals once set their foot on this once grandest hotel in the Philippines.
The Americans could have bypassed and just encircled Manila, took the rest the Philippines from the Japanese and would have spared a lot of Filipino lives and saved many historical structures from destruction but they opted to take it by force. Manila was second most destroyed city in WWII. I blame the Americans more than the Japanese for that.
It’s a 5 diamond hotel historic residence of Douglas MacArthur and also all dignitaries and hands down my favorite hotel, specially during Christmas love ❤️❤️❤️
THE place to stay. We used to go to the Cowrie Grill for prime rib every so often. My oldest sister had her wedding reception at the winter garden in ‘62 and my parents had their 50th/golden in ‘89 in one of the function rooms(don’t remember the name…) Will experience La Grande Dame again when I go home.
It's been ages since I've been there. My dear departed sister, God rest her soul, celebrated her 18th birthday at the Fiesta Pavilion right past the Lobby Lounge. Thank you for showing The Grand Dame. That's what the Manila Hotel was called back in the day.

It sounds like you know it very well.
Wow, good memories.
The champagne room you did not go
