Edit: Reisenjima Henge is in retail (just never unlocked it). It looks like Horizon added like 3 new quests to their server. I'm not sure the quests plus the balancing changes are enough for me to justify the move to private given how minor the additions are and how most of the game still functions the same as retail, but if you really wanna do those quests and want different balancing of stats, I guess Horizon has that going for them. I'm less sold on it than NS.
Oh. The music choice in this video. Forgot to mention it. I picked Everlasting Bonds because for some reason the track plays in Adoulin on this server. It's really weird. I'm not sure I like it being used as map music for Adoulin (doesn't feel like it fits), but it's a bold choice.

I like changes to jobs in Horizon, Ninja not having useless 2hr is great. PLD with WHM clubs also helps PLD's mp economy. I also appreciate their hard stance on no multiboxing, as we all know how retail is due to neglect.

@@moosecat00 I'm not sure those changes are enough to justify a private server to me. Re-balancing mods feel like a debate with the devs. If it wasn't for the new quests, I would put Horizon in the same category of most private servers. It barely edges into "possibly acceptable" to me, at least.

HorizonXI has a NM on airship as well as the HENM, which is a custom HorizonXI tiered endgame content system. Also once they get to expansions that are higher then lvl 75, the content is being changes to work as lvl 75 content.
It's also the only private server to have achievements with Retro Achievements. They also added HAAP which you get points by helping adventures in need to mission and quest they yet to complete. You get points which leads to unique rewards including mounts such as fenrir mount.

i've played noc souls, to be fair, they changed everything, that adventure quest is how you get all the things you'd get for playing the original msq, you can't really op to do the msq and side quests of old... so it is 100% a different experience, which is both good and bad :) I have a max level blue mage and I never needed to hunt for a single spell... (which was highly boring for me). possibly great for the other mages though since you don't have to buy spells to use them or farm them from mobs in some cases!

Yeah, Nocturnal Souls seems like it's the most creative and interesting private server out there, by a pretty wide margin. I can respect what they have going on there because it's so wild and different.

We can agree to disagree. But people are going to private servers for an experience you are not interested in and likely dont understand. People want to play without trusts and other new bits of content that actively destroyed grouping in classic zones and a swath of other content. Telling people that nothing is stopping them from doing it anyway completely misses the point. You are not likely to find someone who will actively handicap themselves on retail and people will tell you to... go play on a private server.
There is a reason why everquests most successful servers are the constantly reseting classic servers.
Im not trying to change your mind or convince you to go play a private server. Im just explaining why people are getting angry.
Wish you the best of luck.

    • @gregtroyan

People angry at me for saying "You're hurting retail by pirating the game" can be angry. It doesn't make it any less true. It's up to them to decide whether or not they care about hurting retail and the livelihoods of the staff or if they care more about optional gameplay mechanics . Most care more about the latter and they don't like being called out on it.
If there was at least a major graphical/musical difference between retail and private or private offered something exclusive that was never in retail (like in this video), I could support the concept. But when most are just adjusting some stat values and removing maps, I don't think that's worth slowly killing the real game. Others disagree and simply don't care about the real life people involved in game creation and respect for their work. Or, they do mental backflips and argue, "Actually, it's okay and it doesn't affect retail at all!"
They're angry because I'm telling them the truth and they don't want to hear it. I get it. They just want to have fun playing a video game the way they remember it and have a revulsion to anything released after 2006. But again, dudes in retail are playing level 75 without trusts. The graphics are the same. The music is the same. If I want to do a challenge run of a game, I don't need to mod it just to say, "Don't use these optional things", and I wouldn't do that at the expense of an ongoing revenue source for the creators. I'm not going to lose sleep for wanting the real game to survive and the devs to get paid when most private servers are just stat adjustments and removal of optional areas/mechanics, and I think calling those servers out for what they are and do to the real life people who work on the game is fair.
I know private players don't want to think about that stuff. They want XI to be their escape from the real world and just want to have fun, so thinking about how private servers might be hurtful and/or disrespectful is a vibe killer. To them, anything released after the "pure" era of XI is an abomination that needs to be purged because they don't want a reminder it exists. But XI is a live service game, the new stuff is optional and easily avoided.
I'm a vegetarian. If I go to a party and there's a meat tray, I just don't eat any of it and have something else. It is not hard to resist something optional in front of me if I do not like it.
Players don't need to touch the new content and it's easy to avoid with the slightest bit of self-control. If retail forced players to do WOTG, Abyssea, Adoulin, and TVR and forced players to use Trusts, that would be a different story. But it's just there, off to the side, as an option, and because of it being an option they feel a need to pirate the game, and they don't care about the real world impact.
      It's weird, man.
I know those folks won't be convinced the emperor isn't wearing any clothes, but I'll say the emperor isn't wearing any clothes, because it's the truth.
Thanks for the response. Wishing you the best of luck too.

@@gregtroyan I think most of the angry people are the immature ones who don't know how to put their thoughts across properly. If I wanted to play the game how I remember it in 2006 without seeing a bunch of people running quickly between camps and emptying them with those super powered trusts that can one shot groups earlier on, I would go to a private server where I can still naturally walk into an area and get a leveling group without having to convince a few other players who may prefer meat to only eat veggies with me.
Despite all the content being there, having access to easy meat is a temptation for people who aren't vegetarians. It creates a different community and different vibes.
The only issues I have with your argument is that you are very staunch with your stance on how it hurts retail, but it's okay to hurt retail if they provide something unique. To a lot of players, they are getting a unique experience on the less content servers. (also there have been a lot of class balancing changes and huge reworks and different metas that arose from those changes in party comps. So a lot of classes play very differently then than they do in retail now)
Most of the people know that pirating the game is wrong but they don't care. They just want the experience that it provides that retail just isn't capable of providing.
HOWEVER, we may be getting a re-release of FFXI with classic servers ala WOW/EQ style and that may call some of those private servers back to official servers. That would bridge the gap between everyone.

@@mobilereis "The only issues I have with your argument is that you are very staunch with your stance on how it hurts retail, but it's okay to hurt retail if they provide something unique. "
I think there's nuance to be found. A server that offers something so radically different that it can't be found in retail, under any circumstance, is not something that harms retail. If you want to experience the unique quests in Nocturnal Souls, you can only do it there. The difference between that and a server like Horizon is that the options in regards to classic servers (limiting the level cap, not using Trusts etc.) can be experienced in retail, and choosing to play private instead to experience those exact same scenarios does actively hurt retail. Anything you want to do in Horizon can be done in retail, the same cannot be said about Nocturnal Souls. I do think that distinction is important. I can support a fan mod or a fan project if it does something unique because it isn't taking away from the original product. That's not the case with private servers, as again, it's just the game with less content.
The argument in regards to stat modification is something I can see to a degree, but again, the experience isn't different enough where I feel it justifies the private server. There's a sliding scale, and it's not "all fan projects are bad" (check out my Chrono video for examples). It just so happens most private servers falls on the side of the line I do not support.
"Despite all the content being there, having access to easy meat is a temptation for people who aren't vegetarians. It creates a different community and different vibes."
I concede this point. The average gamer isn't able to resist temptation and thus the forced restrictions of private servers are appealing to folks who simply cannot resist using quality of life features. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is true. It doesn't change the fact that those folks could choose to play the way they play on private in retail without hurting the game, and I greatly respect the folks who play retail at level 75.
"Most of the people know that pirating the game is wrong but they don't care. "
I think if more fans just admitted this I would have less of an issue with them, honestly. The moral grandstanding of private server players over retail I find to be really warped and backwards. If they were willing to admit, "Yeah, this is actively hurting retail and it's being kinda selfish but I just miss old school XI so much and it's what I want" I could give them points for honesty. I've had private server players argue that XI doesn't have any developers, that the Voracious Resurgence literally came from nowhere, and that it's perfectly moral to play private because the devs don't make any money from XI and just work on it in their spare time during off hours. They argue players that play private without supporting retail aren't hurting the game in any way.
To me, that's an insane and stupid take. But I can handle the honesty better, and if someone said, "Look, I'm too broke to afford retail" I can sympathize with that. It's the moral grandstanding about the superiority of older content, the throwing away of latter day content in the trash, and arguing that it doesn't hurt the game in any way that I have an issue with and think deserves to be called out. If someone really wants to play private, I get it, but people need to stop pretending it's something other than what it is.
I understand the nostalgia desire and the desire for that kind of old school gameplay, but because that option still exists in retail and there are literally guys playing that way at this exact moment makes me not support the private server concept. All of that said, I get it. Not everyone is able to resist fresh meat.
Thanks for having a mature discussion with me here. I respect your nuance.

@@mobilereis Eh. It is what it is. I could have kept my opinion on the private server thing quiet not to rock the boat, but I've always been open about my opinions and try to be respectful about them despite the pointed nature of my critiques. When I was a teenager in high school (2004-2008), I was one of three people in my high school that liked hair metal, so I got used to being an outcast for my opinions/tastes and got used to defending them.
It's not out of a desire to be contrarian but just a desire to be honest. I've gotten criticized for being a contrarian and having outlandish opinions, but a lot of my takes fall into the "normie" category. If you look at my political views, I'm dead-center with the average American (not the elected officials but the average views of the average citizen). My favorite band is The Beatles, that really popular band everyone likes. My favorite FF is VII, that really popular one everyone likes. If I wanted to be cool I could pretend my tastes were different, but they aren't. I'm just trying to be authentic and true to myself.
As far as my placement in the FF community (as small as my placement is), I like to view myself as offering analysis of the media and fandom that articulates things in ways that perhaps a lot of people feel but are smaller voices in the sphere of the internet. However, I'm not trying to simply voice minority opinion, but rather discuss things from the angle I see things from to change some narratives that I feel need some adjustment and nuance.
For example, I love Final Fantasy VI, it's one of my favorite games ever, but I have a lot more criticisms of the game than the average fan. Because of that, and because it ranks more in the middle of my ranking of the FF games, people think I'm a blind hater of the game. But the critiques are nuanced, and if anybody saw my last livestream, there was a TON of love for VI in that stream. A lot of people lose nuance on the internet, and I know that a lot of people won't be able to see past my nuanced takes and just jump to the most bad faith interpretation of my views. And I do admit that I challenge the audience to look at their views and honestly engage with them. Not everybody wants to do that. But for people like yourself, who do get what I'm conveying, is something I appreciate, because I think we are moving the discourse in a better direction.
