It's a very capable camera. I've had it since released. Menu is complicated but can be customized so you don't have to access it too much. Just set it to the super control panel which can access most settings. The 5 axis stabilization helps compensate for the sensor size limitations. Agree that the video isn't as good as new cameras. The small Panasonic and Olympus primes are sharp and small.

Sure there is a difference in image quality compared to a full frame camera. I own em10 mark II and Olympus 25mm 1.8 and the image quality is incredible. I also would not call it a beginner’s camera, it’s more a photo enthusiast’s gear :)

One of the advantages of this little gem is its lightness and go anywhere capability . Of course, fitted with a fast prime or one of the smaller pro lenses and things improve . However, I found my APS camera was getting to hurt my neck when using it for a significant period of time and whilst still light compared to full frame alternatives , I was looking forward something smaller and more affordable .
It took a while getting use to the menu system, but once mastered , you are away .
I bought mine a year ago direct from Olympus and paid £350 with an extended thirty months warranty . Pretty cool.
I had been toying with getting the camera since it came out and was torn between xt20 and em10 Mkii. Having handled both and played around with the kit lens I chose the em10.
There is no perfect camera , which is why it is always a very personal decision . Always try out your options and read and review images from those choices . Having done all that I feel I have the perfect alternative to my phone.
I make a number of photo books each year and I love seeing my work in print. I don’t any longer do pro work and my needs are quite basic .
Thank you for your thoughts and sharing them with us here.

Gary , what I over looked to mention that I also liked about this camera was the tilt screen , which is vanishing from many newer cameras , as video requires a swing out screen to do blogging . Since I am only do photos and have no need for videos , a tilt screen is a must . In addition, I need to review images in camera and wear glasses, this was one of the more workable options on offer.
I also set up one of the dials to enable BW shooting , where the image also appears on screen and I camera in BW . That is a major advantage over film .
I keep all processing to under thirty seconds on average and use Snapseed for this on my phone. I am not going back to using a computer or laptop . To do Justice to getting the most out of post processing I will require so much power , calibrated screens and before I know it, I am spending more time processing than taking images . So , using Snapseed speeds up my workflow and gives me the sophistic tools to do pretty much what I need on the go , along with sending images to my printer to create my photo books .

    • @GaryJahman

@@carmenfissenden2530 Yeah it really depends on personal needs. The screen is really handy.

I totally get that and wish I had the time between work , grandchildren , gardening and writing ha ha. One day, I promise myself to write a photo book with large pictures to lay on coffee tables . I have three fantasy books to publish with illustrious , whose images hang on the grandchildren’s bedroom walls . I would love to emulate my darkroom days using digital processing , as there are a lot I could do with my photos to emulate the old masters .
However, with regular projects and gathering images of the children growing up, mixed with my travel and street pictures , there is going to be a mass of images for the family to look back on in the years to come.
I also admire looking at the work of other photographers and being inspired by ordinary photographers who tell such wonderful stories with their images .
Deep down, I am learning and building upon a lifetime of inspiration . Sometimes the technology hinders creativity and other times enhances it way beyond what we could do with film .
Keep shooting and looking - we need inspiration - we need to practice

I got one some years back, foolishly sold it for an E-M5 mk II, and kicked myself ever since. Finally bought one back for less than 200 € kit zoom included, it's the nicest street camera one can ever hope. I use it with a trifecta of primes (panasonic 14/2.5, Olympus 25/1.8 and 45/1.8). A true pocket rocket.

Care to explain how it better against em5m2?

    • @ordinosaurs
      @ordinosaurs 10 месяцев назад

@@doel89 Lots of reasons. Let's begin with handling : the E-M5 mk II is about the same size but 30% heavier. Doesn't seem like a lot, but after a day's hike, in nature or in the city, every little bit counts. If you add the HLD-8L to the 5.2, it has the same size overall as the E-M1 mk II, but a far worse grip, so that doesn't help. And the E-M1 mk II has become a far better yet about as expensive camera 2nd hand.
Then the "interface" : the EVF of the 10.2 is a beautiful OLED panel, the EVF of the 5.2 is an older LCD unit which can burn itself to death if exposed to the sun. Very fragile, very expensive to replace when damaged, worse image quality. Controls ? The 10.2 has a nice layout on the top plate, with 4 easily accessible buttons that you can recognize by touch. The 5.2 has a cluttered top plate with small and cramped controls.
Specs : on paper the 5.2 takes the cake, but most of the improvements over the 10.2 are for video, and sadly it's the part that aged the worst. The 5.2 is limited anyway to 1080p HD, which doesn't cut it anymore.
Which leaves, in favour of the 5.2 : weather sealing, under condition you use a (weather sealed) pro lens [big, expensive, in your face : contrary to the spirit of nimble inconspicuous street photography], high resolution, but only on static objects and from a tripod [again, not suited to street photography], and focus stacking [requires tripod and compatible with only a handful of pro lenses, see comments above].
Exclusives of the 10.2 : oled EVF, instinctive controls, weight, focus tracking with camera at eye level and your thumb on the back lcd (the 5.2 can't do that). The BLS-50 battery is still current (found on the latest OM-5).
Against the 5.2 : The battery has been removed from Olympus inventory since 2019 and can't be found OEM anymore, and the camera has some teething problems (on/off switch can become erratic, several seconds lapse between shots when SD card close to full capacity).
TL;DR the 10.2 is a much better street photography camera than the 5.2.

I really like my Olympus, especially with the adapter and my canon nifty 50 lens. I get some very nice portraits with the camera and that lens. I have other cameras, so I don't use it as much any more, but I like that I can throw it in my bag and have a decent camera to play with on my walks around my college's campus. Hi Jan, well there are actually quite a lot of options. If you like M4/3 cameras then the Panasonic GH5 is really good. Crop sensor cameras I'd suggest a Sony A6400 or a Fujifilm Xt3 or xt4. Full frame cameras the Sony A7C or A7III.
Keep in mind that you need a good lens as well. So my bet would be to check a M43 or Crop sensor cam

Yeah it's totally possible with the right lens of course and with some good practice this can be the camera for you. Contrast detection is not as good as phase detection, but you have to keep in mind that many great wildlife shooters don't even use autofocus 😉

    • @ordinosaurs
      @ordinosaurs 2 года назад +4

Both are 16 Mpix cameras. The mk II is all metal, the III is plastic. On the plus side, the mk III brings 4k video, and that's about it. But it takes a lot of advanced features away (for instance, silent shutter is now a mode by itself instead of being a shutter drive accessible from regular PASM modes). So, if you do stills photography, the mk II is less restricted, better built, and better value. It will grow with you whereas the mk III is firmly entrenched at the beginner level.
If you have a bit more money, the mk IV is 20 Mpix, 4k, and a nice blend of the mk II advanced features and "easy modes" of the mk III.

This is crazy because you never use the super menu, which allow you to change basic settings easily by pressing ok button. You don't have to dive in the menu every time like Sony or Canon camera. And no, you cannot feel any difference between M4/3 and Full Frame. Of course, the depth of field is different, but you use the kit lens to compare.

Loved your no-nonsense approach. Simple & matter of fact. Thanks for not saying that this camera is "sexy" I have one, and I'm going to buy another one. Why? Well, because, maybe this camera, within its price and limits, one can go out and get something most people had forgotten about photography: TO HAVE FUN.
Yes, I've noticed that nowadays, technography has taken away the fun of photography: Bokeh, HDR, phone synchro, 4K, weather sealed, not enough light, etc, etc.
Cameras are, or were meant, back in the day, to record moments. We do not remember, nor dream, in 4K. No one here, reading these lines, including you, is going to expose at the Museum of Fine Arts. Let the "pros" get that hell and work it out, since they, after going through hell, in order to expose, they get & give hate in return
You, go out and bring back memories, dreamy memories.

Why does my camera go out of focus if I move toward a subject. I start at about 3 feet for the video and when i get to about 18 inches is is out of focus. But if I take a still image at 18 inches it is in focus.
    Ideas?
