Jon Gomm is a uniquely talented musician who’s technique’s are exquisitely well pronounced in the most impressive ways possible. His music is truly beautiful and emotionally connected. I discovered him for myself just a few months ago and instantly became a fan. Song for a Rainy Day, is so amazing. Which he did as a rearrangement of a song written by one of his students as a tribute to his unfortunate passing. This song was so well performed and articulated that I couldn’t help but feel its intensity. Jon Gomm, is quite simply the best fingerstyle guitarist I have come across.

The precision and technique is mind blowing. But what cemented this as one of the all-time great works of art for me is that the song itself, vocals and lyrics, is equally magnificent. Seems to be Jon’s trademark in all of his music...inspirational.
Not to mention how amazing the lyrics are and the concept of a flower growing through concrete. The vocals were great and singing while doing all that is what really blew my mind.

After that I was determined to seek it out and hear the rest. Eff me! I was so blown away with the pinched harmonics and in-song tuning, and the percussion. Wow. Erik Mongrain doesn't get nearly enough love in this realm. He soars above most compositionally imo. He's been quiet the past few years but his first couple of albums are a goldmine of double-handed percussive technique.
Yeah man, Erik has been talking about releasing an album for over 2 years now. He has every single piece finished but has yet to find the time and the right guy for him to record. He jumps on twitch every now and then and practices his newest pieces live so that you can watch his writing process and conversation. It’s been almost 9 months since he last appeared on twitch tho unfortunately. He seems to like to take elongated breaks because not many people know, but he is an avid gamer. Spends tons of time grinding and such. Hopefully he will find some time to release his new music sometime in 2021. If anyone can make sure to follow his twitch page and look out for any streams of album updates. He deserves more exposure.
I saw Jon play in my hometown about 9 or 10 years ago, along with Andy McKee and Preston Reed. I'll be honest, I wasn't that into this whole style of music at the time, but Jon's set, and this song in particular really blew my mind. Incredible from a technical perspective, and truly beautiful to listen to.
Jon wrote this song about a flower growing through the concrete outside his flat. 🤯 I asked him how one goes about learning the various techniques required to ultimately combine them the way he does, & he said he is working on a method book but in the meantime he recommended “New Acoustic Guitar” by Peppino D’Agostino. He’s also got a unique pickup/mic setup, which I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I think it’s a combination of 2-3 internal pickups/mics, one for percussive sounds (contact mic), a “traditional” internal acoustic pickup/mic, & a line-out, & he’s able to mix the three to his liking. It’s something like that. Plus if you listen with headphones he applies a vocoder to his vocal, distortion to the guitar, etc. Cool stuff & great guy. Thanks for doing this video. Please consider checking out Pino Forastiere’s “Wild Parking,” Andy McKee “Drifting,” etc. Bill Frisell is always welcome too ; ) Oh! After seeing your commentary on Danny Carey I’m confident you’d like drummer Mark Guiliana. Check out the video entitled “Mark Guiliana drum solo with Jason Lindner’s NOW vs. NOW” for starters. Ok thanks, bye. 👍
His low E (and possibly A) strings are actually bass strings too as he couldn't get the sound he wanted with regular strings. I saw him in York in the uk once and he blew my mind. Then was lucky enough to use the same producer with my band years later. FYI he's just released a new album today and it's amazing 🔥
i’m not someone who typically listens to percussive guitar but Jon is the only exception he does an amazing job executing that and his singing just complements his playing so well
I’ve been lucky enough to see Jon play live twice here in Belfast. It’s hard to believe how mesmerising he is to watch in real life and the pedals he puts through the PA make it sound like a heavy metal band at times. There’s lots of people doing this sort of thing in recent years and he’s not a pioneer but he’s certainly unique and world class. He’s a new album out too which is meant to be awesome!!
Someone has probably already mentioned this but those are banjo tuners, pre set to tune between without going sharp or flat. This in no way negates Jon's ability, if anything he ascended the majority of modern percussive fingerstylists incorporating techniques like this. He's one of those players who blazes the trail that countless others follow
All that incredible technique, AND singing at the same time... but let's not forget it's a fantastic song too. A lot of guitarists who go down this route just don't write music anywhere as good as this. Their music is in service to the technique. Gomm's technique is in service of the song.
Seen this a few years ago my friend recommended it I was blown away he's a one man band good explanation an breakdown by urself to I was impressed by how much you knew for a first time watching it fully
this man is literally my idol when it comes to percussion guitar, he's the reason why i actually decided to give it a try, i wanted to do things like this because it just opens a new realm of possibility for the guitar and brings new meaning, lets you convey stronger emotion, take each part of this song, put it on other instruments and yeah it'll still sound great, but by god doing them all on 1 conveys a level of skill, love and downright emotion you cant achieve anywhere else. its admirable to say the least.
I've seen Jon Gomm at my local open mic at least once (Leeds, England). I think both times it was for an anniversary or birthday celebration or something. Great in the flesh.
Michael, I spent my first 8 years of playing guitar pursuing this genre and know the rabbit hole inside and out. In the two years since, I have dedicated myself to learning how to play the guitar the “normal way” which was spurred by the Grateful Dead. If you have any questions, I would be overjoyed to discuss matters of techniques, gear setups from the Passionflower video, etc, as well as Dead culture/music and the possibility of combining the two. Keller Williams is the only person to bring chops like this to Dead music so far that I know of and I’m working on figuring out how to potentially integrate the two in my own way. Thanks for bringing killer content on a regular basis. Best, Darrius Spangler
Ahhh, cool to see this as a recent subscriber! Around when I first started going to local gigs here in Bolton Jon played a bar, and there was a buzz on the message board after about how good it was. He came back a few times over the next years, and I loved how quiet everyone was weeks he worked his magic in these little pubs and bars in our little music scene. Good times.
I can barely strum bar chords in rhythm trying to sing let alone holding a beat on my guitar while fretting with both hands, picking, tuning the pegs, and whatever else is going on. Incredibly playing and such an amazing song.
Been waiting for you to do this, one of my favorite songs over the last couple years. His youtube recently had a resurgence too, and he's starting to put out new songs again.

OMG! That was so good! Just made my day! MP videos make my day! Light-heatedly, but true, seeing brilliance like that...it is just stupid amazing. Watching anyone do any amazing thing, no matter what it is, I will watch and an ear, to tune/hit notes. Come on Jon, give us mortals hope. Seeing this for the first time, is for me, like SRV live for the first time. Just put my guitar down and watch and be astounded! Thank you Michael and all who requested this! OMG WOW! Captain Obvious, noting OMG WOW, but OMG WOW! Michael...how you can break this down with your fingers by ear....WOW for you!
Good call out @Rory M. I was able to sit 10 feet away from Calum Graham and Luca Stricagnoli last time they were in the Detroit area. Very small performing space called Trinity House Theater. Not only was Calum fantastic but Luca is from another planet using multiple stringed guitars and devices at the same time with hands and feet. ;). Definitely both are highly recommended for your entertainment. Once we can have live shows again well worth seeing them. And of course Michael, great breakdown of this performance from Jon Gomm.

@@yinyangthang Oh Hedges was a treasure. I kinda take him as a 'given' in this context.
One of the most amazing live shows I have ever seen. Jon has more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body.
This is technique overload. I love it
Jon wrote this song about a flower growing through the concrete outside his flat.
Bill Frisell is always welcome too ; )
Oh!
You're a hell of a human Mike
i’m not someone who typically listens to percussive guitar but Jon is the only exception he does an amazing job executing that and his singing just complements his playing so well
What witchcraft is this? And singing at the same time?
Wizardry
Sorcery
As a guitarist I had two reactions to this 1. My God thats just beautiful; and watching more 2. That is a hell of a lot of work to make music :)
@@DSG-br5lk it proves that beat machines aren't that impressive today.
I love this song It can genuinely described as immaculate. If I could just do one of those techniques half as well as him I would be happy.
Michael, I adore your reactions. Pure music lover written all over your face.
I’ve also just posted this vid on his Facebook. Maybe you can hook up with him on a livestream?
Been waiting for this one for so long; such a great guitarist.
Awesome musician and another great reaction Michael. Thanks for such an inspirational channel.
God that was GREAT! Boy do I miss my Lowden O-23 C. Jon that was BEAUTIFUL!
All that incredible technique, AND singing at the same time... but let's not forget it's a fantastic song too. A lot of guitarists who go down this route just don't write music anywhere as good as this. Their music is in service to the technique. Gomm's technique is in service of the song.
Jon from my home town..!! He's awesome..! Go check out his track 'Deep Sea Fishes.."!! Its stupendous
Been waiting this, love your videos man, would love to see some mataus asato on here if possible, keep it up man
Was over 12 years ago i first saw Jon. He's a wonderful guitarist.
Every time I come back to that video it blows my mind.
The universe is listening to you bro, Jon just put a new song up a few hours ago haha bloody awesome!
Best,
Darrius Spangler
These analyses are excellent and extremely helpful. Amazing to mirror so closely and so quickly what you're hearing #stringking
Loved watching this! You seem to have an amazing ear I learned a lot watching this.
This is my dmt song everytime🤩
Been waiting for you to do this, one of my favorite songs over the last couple years. His youtube recently had a resurgence too, and he's starting to put out new songs again.
I've been fortunate enough to meet and watch Jon perform in the Jolly Brewer on Lindum Hill, Lincoln, UK. Probably only about 150 people there it was magical.
Jon is scarily talented, and a really nice bloke to boot.
Lol love you playing From the Beginning at the beginning!
Normally don't get into the slap/tap/harmonics style acoustic stuff... but this was good.
Thanks for turning me on to this mind-blowingly talented musician.
This Individual is Super Human!!!🎤🎸
I saw Jon live, must be 15 years ago, at the Black Swan in York at the suggestion of my cousin. Been a fan ever since.
So glad u did Gomm!
Didn’t know about Eric thanks for the PSA...
Gotta give “The Nomad” by Calum Graham a listen. So incredibly complex.
@@johnmaclaren422 that’s awesome. I saw Luca with Mike Dawes and Cenk Urdogab (legendary fretless acoustic dude), what an awesome experience.
@@rorym3139 Excellent. Those are yet 2 other great masters of this craft for sure.
Yep I have suggested calum before. What an incredible musician for his age !
Awesome reaction! Jon's arrangement of Ain't Nobody with Dan from TesseracT is an awesome listen too!
So good. 'Wukan motorcycle kid' is also one of my all time favourites of Jon's. The story of the song translated into music is really what makes it so memorable.
