True story. I played a gig once and the last song of the first set was Still Got The Blues. An old woman (very hippy looking) stood a couple of feet away from me during the song. She was swaying and I thought she was either pissed or stoned but she stood there for the whole song. She introduced herself during the break and she is Gary Moore's sister in law. Her sister was Donna. She told me how they met and how she introduced him to her sister and how Gary was never the same after she left him. Her name was Kitty and she told me stories of the artists of the day. I think she was a bit of a groupie but her parting words were "Gary would have been very proud of your solo!" I went home and bawled my eyes out. Gary Is my hero and the best in my opinion. This solo is the greatest guitar performance ever! I will never forget that night. Bawling now thinking about it. RIP God
It is absolutely impossible to play guitar with any more feeling and control over their instrument, the guy was a total master of the guitar, he could play with anyone, could play anything, but nobody makes a guitar sing like Gary Moore, thank goodness we have all that we have of him available. Great video choice!
Gary Moore is one of the greats. This tune was written by the late, great guitarist Roy Buchanan. These guys are in a league of their own. Thanks for another great video.
aaaachh man... when he hits that second note when he's cranked up the volume - the bend - both times.... sends absolute shivers down my spine.... he played like no one else.... Him and Schenker shaped my early years
Gary made every performance stand out. His playing leaves me with abandonment, then pulls me back with surprise and more emotion than I knew I had in me. He is the reason I still play guitar. He makes me want to work everything in my head out with my fingers. So much emotion. Thank you Gary Moore.
Just watching that gave me goosebumps and took me right back to my youth. Watching Gary play was awesome... rock, blues, metal... he was a master of it all. One of our local heroes and still missed
This is the greatest guitar instrumental performance of all time. I have watched this countless times, and i still get joyful tears. Gary Moore , in my opinion , is the greatest guitarist of all time and is highly underatted. I was lucky enough to get to see him , only once. Sat in the front row, and from start to finish, i was just floored. Every note means something!! Absolute legend.
You are blessed, Gary is why I play. It breaks my heart that I never saw him live. He’s the only guitar player who has ever brought me to tears simply by the expressiveness of his playing.
"Underrated" nah. By who? He is the consummate guitarist and definitely the guitarist's guitarist. Who cares how he is rated by those who don't know? We know.
I love Gary Moore. I love finding high quality recordings of some of his live gigs, they are every bit as interesting as this one especially when he plays Hendrix. His tone on his Red House solo from the Stratocaster 50th concert made my mind up to go and buy a Marshall Amp, a Strat and a Tube Screamer to try and get a similar sound. I cant play like him, or get the range of amazing sounds he gets, but I love the sounds I can get, such an inspiration. I think he is the greatest rock guitarist of all time IMHO.
The Lord of the Strings. My Hero. He is why I play guitar. A true virtuoso. It is sad but true that Gary was never recognised for his gift to the world. For decades here we had war and violence yet he was the one of the rare souls who chose follow his own path. To this day, and I shit you not, there are people in Belfast, his home city, who have never heard of him. Not the minority. The majority. It is a sad reflection on our past that murder and war was the daily headline news but Gary Moore is one thing we can be truly proud of. I can't imagine a day without listening to his magic.
It was May 1 1990 at the Concert Hall in my city and on stage Gary Moore it was the second time, and as it would turn out also the last time, i saw him live. This was the last encore he did and did he blew my mind? You bet he did! He played with so much emotions, passion and also lots of improvisation. Afterwords it felt like i was up in the 7th Heaven! No one but Gary Moore could make the guitar sound so sad. When words failed him the guitar spoke for him.Gone but never forgottten.
Thank you Michael, for viewing this clip. There is no guitar player that brings a tear to my eye, like Gary does. He in my view is the complete master, just wonderful
Watching this brings me so much joy and it also breaks my heart to think how tragic it is that we have lost two great Irish guitar masters..Gary and Rory Gallagher..Thank you Michael for keeping them in our memories....
This is in fact the best guitar performance ever recorded, without a shadow of a doubt! Gary Moore, il capo di tutti capi! The best of the best. Gary RIP ❤❤❤
I honestly think Gary Moore is one of the most important guitar players if anyone wants to stydy guitar. He perfects vibrato, music expression, and melody like nobody else ever has. He is on a holy grail for all guitarists that know gary moore. Literally perfect player basically never played anything bad
Great to see people appreciating just how special Gary was among the greats of guitar. No one played a Les Paul better before or since in my opinion. This was a monster of a performance captured for eternity.
I have been playing over 35 years and somehow have never really heard Gary Moore before. Wow, this is the sound I should have been chasing. Incredible!
There are so many superb pieces of guitar work in this instrumental, it's simply great. I posted Empty Rooms Live in 1987 15 years ago on RUclips, and its visited millions and millions of times, and Gary deserved it.
Gary was invited to play a number of times at Montreaux due to his genius and ability as a guitarist who could literally play anything at any time and place.
I met Gary in Brighton, England a couple of years before he died. He's my biggest guitar hero, and I've always watched this particular performance growing up. Learning each lick, being stunned at his ability to phrase like a traditional blues player but then switch into a demon shred machine like a light switch flicking on. When we met, I got a picture and we chatted briefly. We walked our separate ways and I had this sudden dread come over me... my biggest guitar hero, so many things I should have said and didn't. I spun around and shouted after him down the street "The Messiah Will Come Again, live 1990 is the best thing I've ever seen!". He gestured to his Mrs to wait a minute, turned and walked back towards me. I think he realized I was a real fan and didn't just recognize his off of one of my dad's records. We stood and chatted for a good ten more minutes. I never got to see Gary play live, but I'll cherish that memory forever. Years later I got to choose an end of year performance piece at uni, I chose this. I pored over it for months, learning it note for note as best I could and performed it live for my uni. I got a standing ovation and overall received a distinction grade for the performance. For Gary.
Greeny will never be played or sound like that again. everything that made it sound the way it did transcended when Gary drew his last breath. Godspeed Gary Moore... Mr. Palmisano you Sir explained Gary's technique so well. Bless you
It is a bit sad that Peter Green's old guitar will most likely never be able to sing like it did when Gary played it. Peter knew Gary was the right person to be the caretaker of his guitar.
My very first concert experience was Gary Moore in a little provincial hall (Guildford Civic for the Brits that might know it) on his tour in '86 for the Run for Cover Album. He's why I started playing guitar in the first place. Saw him again with Albert King and Albert Collins at Hammersmith Odeon for the Still got the Blues tour and it was honestly a life altering gig. Amazing player, incredible tone and musicality.
Yeah he pretty much sends whatever solo or whatever style he's doing into the stratosphere! I became a fan with his 80's album "Victims of The Future" which I heard a record store employee playing in the store on a slow day. Same old story, I asked him who that was and I'd never heard of Gary Moore before. And then almost on cue, his version of Jeff Beck's "Shapes of Things" came on and it melted my face off! That solo is bar none, the best guitar solo ever recorded! EVER!
I’ve been playing guitar for 27 years and Gary Moore is one of the greatest guitars players I have ever heard and seen live. His bends, vibrato and sheer feeling when he plays is magical. How he isn’t in the conversation among the goats is beyond me. Gary could literally do it all.
Not being listed in Rolling Stones list of top 100 guitarists of all-time makes that list a complete joke. In my opinion Gary Moore is the greatest guitarist to ever grace this world!
At the top of my list of musical regrets is that I never saw him live. At the top of my bucket list in retirement is to take a pilgrimage to his grave site and bow before the GOAT.
Ive binged all the major players instrumentals in my 35 years of playing guitar but when i really wanna a reality check i always come back to this song❤ Gary is probably the most underrated guitarist on the planet Thank roy for giving him this opportunity to show us all
Kirk Hammett is a good player, but he will never be able to get Peter Green's old guitar to sing like it did when Gary played it. It is a special guitar and in the hands of a special player the magic happens.
I discovered this recording back in the 90s. I listen to it a couple of times each year. Each time my jaw is on the floor. He was a true master of the electric guitar! It just slays me!! =R=
Gary Moore is why I play guitar. 6 months after first starting to play, I knew some barre chords and a couple of positions of the minor pentatonic. I went to a guitar workshop and one of the sessions was on soloing. The instructor went around the class and had each person solo to a chord progression he played. I tried to weasel out of it because I wasn't ready but he insisted I give it a shot. When I finished, everyone was staring at me and he said, "You play like Gary Moore." I asked who Gary Moore was and he told me to get his "Still Got The Blues" and "After Hours" CDs which I listened to for hours driving back from the workshop. No, I am nowhere near the player Gary was and never will be, but I just naturally played with bending and vibrato. It's like singing. No one, and I man no one, is better than Gary at bending and vibrato.
@@averyweissmusic No way. Most people don’t realize BB could play anything. Here he is doing some Yngwie Malmsteen: ruclips.net/video/Wal5AawnlDc/видео.html
I cannot speak highly enough about Gary's ability to marry touch with savagery. He's the guy that would walk onstage in a tux, then rip the sleeves off and light a flamethrower. He'll lull you in with soft touch, then split your skull with runs, sustain, and richter scale volume. He chooses violence paired with a nice Merlot. My favorite guitarist, bar none, because of the fact that he effortlessly plays Jekyll AND Hyde. Fearless, unapologetic, legendary.
So lucky to have seen him play a few times over the years in his various musical moods...from metal to blues ..the man was a player unlike no other..much missed.
That's awesome! He was truly unbelievable, I think the live performance on RUclips of that song is one of the most beautiful and impressive things I've ever seen on guitar.
Great analysis. For those younger guitarist- have a dig round and find some Gary Moore concerts from the 80s in his heavy rock/ metal era. The solos and licks are epic .
The greatest guitarist ever to walk on this earth. Gary was actually left handed, but because the first guitar he had was right handed that is how he learned to play. As he once said, that was what he thought was normal. Hence of course he used his strongest hand/fingers on the fretboard! R.I.P Gary. We really miss you. 😊😎🎸🇺🇦🇬🇧
I played along with every track on Still Got The Blues countless times. Gary combined great blues playing with shred AND feel and that's what I loved about his playing. He left us too soon.
Saw him loads of times live. Best guitarist to ever walked the earth. Growing up in Belfast, having only really heavy strings, he did not know anything else. He strengthened his fingers beyond everybody else by being ignorant to the whole thing. When he came down from Belfast, no one could play his guitar.
About 15 years ago I ended up in Cork, the music shop there had Rory Gallaghers beaten up Strat on display before going to the Rock museum in Dublin. Im staring at it gob smacked, Rory came to New Zealand and I saw him play Shadow Play on it, my fav song back then. To my amazement the guy in the shop said I could play it - the strings hadn't been changed, were a little bit rusty probably with Rorys own sweat. I gave it a wee tune up and couldn't play the bloody thing the strings were so heavy, the shop guy must have thought I was a total dork. Watching how effortlessly Gary Moore does his bends with like any finger, and his vibrato and accuracy, I can see how heavy strings for him would be no trouble at all. I guess it would have a louder signal as well maybe. Two of the absolute best, Gary was my fav. electric guitar player, his tone is the tone to rule them all.
In my opinion , this is his absolute Masterpiece. Everytime I get goosebumps, EVERYTIME!! I really enjoyed watching you, feeling it, how it blew you away!
I was fortunate enough to see Gary Moore at his absolute peak. This is exactly why Greenie is a legendary guitar. With the best will in the world bless his soul Peter Green didn't have Gary's mastery although it pains me to say it.
Gary kicked my ass as a high school kid learning guitar in the 80s. He was a very early influence on me along with King Edward. I cried when he died. The Black Rose record from Thin Lizzy had such great songs from him as well. His metal years The End of the World guitar intro was something I had to learn. Loved those arpeggios!! The palm muted runs wow! Sorely missed…
Thanks a lot Michael, your comment about using the 9th was extremely helpful and when you noodle and introduce it, you immediately get "that sound"! So, thank you for this. And btw, your comment about Gary Moore are absolutely spot on! Hope that we can watch (and learn) together some more of Gary's stuff!
Usually it’s said that the guitar is the extension of the guitar player. I always said that in Gary’s case it’s the other way around! He’s the extension of the guitar, he expresses what the guitar is “singing” and you freaking do see it in every note he plays!! And there’s nothing more to be said! Love and miss you Gary! 🎸🤟😥😇
And on this he uses the "greeny" it has the most beautiful out of phased sound, but he could make any guitar sound good.. I love his 10 sec. Boosts and he knew just how to take it to the edge without blasting it.. His technique is perfect, could play any genre at the same time he had full control over his instrument, as you could see he controlled the volume and tone several times . You should see parisienne walkways live from royal albert hall 92, still got the blues live from hammersmith odeon 90 and the loner live from sweden 87..
That's the most amazing thing about Gary - his versatility. He played everything at a master level. How many master blues players could also shred like Gary? Or shredders that could play with his feel? He was one of a kind.
The subtleties mixed in with incredibly aggressive playing is really mind boggling and he never, ever misses a note. I discovered Gary Moore when I was 15, I’m 60 now and still get the chills from his playing every time.
I loved ur breakdown, my alltime favourite player, his dynamics were insane. He was so accomplished in creating beautiful melodies. He almost "sang" through his playing.
Gary Moore!! One of my faves. Love the way he attacks, but with feeling…I discovered him years ago when I bought a used car and the previous owner had left a Gary Moore cassette in the player. Love at first listen!!😮😊
I'm not even a guitar player....and that is freakin jaw-dropping! That is the kind of performance...that should be happening on a huge stage overlooking the grand canyon on a cloudless, warm, moonlit night ...with a trillion stars in the sky and meteors quietly dropping like exploding fireflies.
Mr Palmisano, you’re one of a kind. And I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all that you do. Watching you talk about these musicians has helped me slowly start to become a musician myself.. I’m 60 yrs old now... been at it (in earnest) for about 3 years now ... I quickly stopped watching the “ put your fingers here” instruction vids.. because I realized my goal with music was to make the guitar an extension of me, or an extension of my voice .. I want to “play music” not just play songs.. I’m still very much a beginner/intermediate player... but I’m starting to find my path and you’ve been so very ,very helpful to me! I can’t offer you money , as it’s all I can do to keep the house, and the lights turned on right now.... but I wanted you to know how appreciated you are! ... thank you Sir! You da man.....
Great video Michael. Much as I admire many guitarists, Gary Moore is my all time hero as he shows us how to just channel emotion into the guitar. I don't think it's any coincidence he bends virtually every note, it's ho you get passion into the note. RIP Gary. You will always inspire me.
Dear Michael, thanks for your expert comment. At first i thought that interrupting this Masterpiece is a big sin, but you do it with respect and your comments are very interesting indeed. Why this is the best performance ever? Not only Gary’s unbelievable technical ability and incredible band, but as a Belfast child and man and this dark history in mind “the Messiah will come again” is the highest consolation and believe there is for a peaceful live for everyone! There really is nothing higher, nothing more then this. Gary gave his all in this Magnum Opus. I had to share this with you; keep up the good work and keep having fun; greetz from Holland!
Oh man, love your comment. I totally agree with you about interrupting any great song especially during the solo, usually makes me super annoyed and anyone that knows me knows not to do it - but like you, Im totally fine with Michael doing it because he is just like us - there is so much to this song, many of his songs, so cool to find a bunch of people who like me, adore Gary still.
Mr Palmisano got the essence of Gary Moore perfectly. I kind of found him when I was about 12 years old and have always found him to be the most expressive, most sustaining and one of the most original styles in guitar playing. Also a very good singer which is not too often mentioned. All he has done in his career is awesome material and when you truly understand how good he was already at a very young age you truly know what a natural talent he was.
Since first hearing him 40 years ago, I've been telling all and sundry that Gary is the epitome, nay epoch, of what an electric guitar soloist should be. He had EVERYTHING in his playing...touch, tone, fire, passion, sound, vibrato, taste, phrasing, enough speed but for all but the most militant shredder, note choice....EVERYTHING! I've heard them all, and I've been playing myself for over 40 years, and I can say in all sincerity, Gary is the only guitarist whose playing made me cry! His death was an utter tragedy for the guitar world. It's a travesty that he his rarely mentioned in the pantheon of guitar gods, because for millions of us, he was the greatest electric guitar soloist of them all. Lovely to see that you agree Mike!!
Yes buddy. So well put, his playing brought me to happy tears a few times. Makes me happy reading comments like yours, and seeing Mike react like we did watching Gary play.
DUDE!!!! This is the analysis I’ve been waiting for, it was the first RUclips video, I put in my favorites list My favorite guitarist EVER!!!! Gary Moore is in the MASTER CLASS of guitarists of all time I wanna pull my hair out (what’s left of it) when someone’s jamming to Eddie VanHalen and says “who’s Gary Moore?” The live with Albert King, “midnight blues” is another masterfully subtle genius performance also. No one emotes through a guitar like Gary did Great channel brother
I'm only 22yo and only got into guitar playing 5 years ago, because my dad (who is also a guitar player) was listening to Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues. I don't no why, but at that time and place hearing that song just blew my mind. My dad is big Gary Moore fan and i've probably heard his songs earlier too without realizing it because youth and stupidity :D. Unfortunately never got an chance to see him live, but still he is my biggest inspiration in guitar playing. Like you said his playing is just pure electricity that feels like it moves my soul :). Also the 9ths really do add interesting spice to pentatonic playing.
Gary Moore is in the pantheon of true guitar players. No bizarre gimmicks, no nonsense…just raw skill and emotion. Truly gifted individual for sure
Best description by far 🙌❤️
Indeed. Just look at Mike’s eye during the head.👌
Indeed. Just look at Mike’s eye during the head. Especially explaining the 2-5-#5-1.👌

Gary es todo eso que dijiste, pero éste tema es... No Puedo dejar de llorar casa vez que lo escucho... Dios!!!
Gary Moore is my favourite guitarist. He has the best Strat tone I’ve ever heard on Red House on the Fender Strat 50th performance
One of the best guitar players ever walk the earth! Gone but not forgotten!

Gary Moore.... So much talent as guitarrist, singer and interpreter too, in my opinion the greatest among the great! From 🇮🇹
Legend has it that last note is still on it’s way through the universe.
and probably amazing anything that hears it. Cheers
Agreed.
Another galaxy is hearing pure emotion
Love that. Only an artist would say something like that.

Gary's vibrato is the best there's ever been IMHO. What an incredible player.

Gary is one of the best. Glad to see him on your channel!
All done on the iconic Greeny LP. Absolute class.
Kirk Hammett is a good player, but he will never be able to get Peter Green's old guitar to sing like it did when Gary played it. It is a special guitar and in the hands of a special player the magic happens.
His live version of Shapes of Things is one of the greatest guitar performances ever.
Michael thanks for breaking this one down. The emotion that comes out of Gary Moore is the best, but I also have to give a shout to Roy Buchanon
Don’t diss BB King like that
Gary Moore style of bending and Vibrato are so good and unique. But I have to say BB King is the King of bending and vibrato. Both were amazing.
@@averyweissmusic No way. Most people don’t realize BB could play anything. Here he is doing some Yngwie Malmsteen: ruclips.net/video/Wal5AawnlDc/видео.html
@@TheSpydersBand I have no idea why I find this so funny. Thanks for that.
@@johncarpenter440 There’s another one like this and one of Yngwie playing BB.
YESSS! This is his best live performance of this song.
So lucky to have seen him play a few times over the years in his various musical moods...from metal to blues ..the man was a player unlike no other..much missed.
Makes me want to see a breakdown of Roy Buchannan . Huge moment in my musical appreciation seeing him live just before he passed.
That's awesome! He was truly unbelievable, I think the live performance on RUclips of that song is one of the most beautiful and impressive things I've ever seen on guitar.
YES! Roy Buchanan needs to be heard by anyone who is interested in guitar playing. Many great live clips here on RUclips. The guy was terrifying.
Great analysis. For those younger guitarist- have a dig round and find some Gary Moore concerts from the 80s in his heavy rock/ metal era. The solos and licks are epic .
Couldnt agree more with you. This performance brings me to tears, just takes you out there❤
The greatest guitarist ever to walk on this earth. Gary was actually left handed, but because the first guitar he had was right handed that is how he learned to play. As he once said, that was what he thought was normal. Hence of course he used his strongest hand/fingers on the fretboard!
R.I.P Gary. We really miss you. 😊😎🎸🇺🇦🇬🇧
One of the best. Playing Greeny. Amazing how that guitar has made the rounds........
Gary the King!!! 🤴
I played along with every track on Still Got The Blues countless times. Gary combined great blues playing with shred AND feel and that's what I loved about his playing. He left us too soon.
I think a have about 20 Versions of "Parisienne Walkways", my favourite song, espacially with Phil! Miss 'em both, Phil and Gary
@@BriantheLionNZ ohh...really nice! Rory and Gary used to use each others guitars as back-up back in Belfast in the late 60s, early 70s.
In my opinion , this is his absolute Masterpiece. Everytime I get goosebumps, EVERYTIME!! I really enjoyed watching you, feeling it, how it blew you away!
Nobody makes you want to throw your guitar out the window more than Gary Moore
I was fortunate enough to see Gary Moore at his absolute peak. This is exactly why Greenie is a legendary guitar. With the best will in the world bless his soul Peter Green didn't have Gary's mastery although it pains me to say it.
That guitar…could last a thousand lifetimes and never be touched like that again….
Certainly ain't getting played like that by it's current owner 😂
Gary was my hero and I continue to study his stuff today
Gary Moore beautiful to listen to!!!!
Wow, an amazing performance. Just heavenly!
And a great reaction video and analysis, thanks Mike!
Gary Moore’s extended cut of Separate Ways. Must watch.
Absolutely breathtaking...
Sustain plus the Vibrato! I saw him back in the early 70s with thin lizzy! POW!
Years ago in Manchester I saw Gary Moore supporting BB King. I took my lad who was 15 at the time, how luck was he. Guitar heaven.
Love Gary. I remember his metal album called Corridors of Power. Brilliant. The song End of the World is mind blowing.
The only player who could do justice to a Roy Buchanan song and one of the very few that ever attempted it. Excellent.
I love watching your facial expressions. I'm sure mine look the same when I listen to Gary.
My favorite contemporary blues guitarist, from back before I even was a blues fan, and was still mostly into 80s hard rock and metal.
It makes me happy that he finally gets the respect he deserves, what a master, rip my friend.
His tribute to Hendrix performance was amazing even Billy Cox was impressed , he played a great set .
Yes! Blues for Jimi- fantastic performance!
The man who left his heart and soul on the stage
Gary accomplished what he set out to do become the best guitar player he could be. Doing that showed us the best of electric guitar
DUDE!!!! This is the analysis I’ve been waiting for, it was the first RUclips video, I put in my favorites list
My favorite guitarist EVER!!!!
Gary Moore is in the MASTER CLASS of guitarists of all time
I wanna pull my hair out (what’s left of it) when someone’s jamming to Eddie VanHalen and says “who’s Gary Moore?”
The live with Albert King, “midnight blues” is another masterfully subtle genius performance also.
No one emotes through a guitar like Gary did
Great channel brother
I recommend the video of Gary Moore and bb king playing the thrill is gone live in London 1992. That is an amazing video
I always listen to songs and go, I’ll
Play this my way, but with Gary Moore I want to play everything note for note.
So much emotion!! Amazing!!!
Gary came into his own with his guitar and music. It obviously came with a price. He's a Legend Maker!
