One thing Crash 1 had, some of its environments were engrossing in a way none of the future games were. We didn't get to navigate the spidery, ratty, dark, and dusty halls of a scantly-inhabited castle -- that the villain seems to have just for self-glorification -- in any games following, after all. It's kind of a cool thing exclusive to the first. It's part of what keeps me going back to play it.
I love how Naughty Dog used the lack of technology to their advantage. The beams and metal platforms are not visible until last second, making it hard to tell where you're going. If you were to put this type of level in a video game today, people would rip you a new one.
I did a perfect run-through of this level once, I even lost my Aku Aku mask near the end and just kept jumping perfectly in the dark until the end...except I didn't know about those first secret boxes. Now, as usual, I'm lucky to make it to the second checkpoint without dying once.
This level gave me so many problems. I kept getting stuck on the terrain at the start more often than not when trying to jump for those first few boxes. Definitely my least favorite area in a relatively fun game.
Jeff Stacy not really the original is definitely harder the only reason why you can still see ahead because of the extra split second if you get hit you can see ahead for a quick minute truth be told you can do this level without the mask but I say this is easier than in the remake because you can still continue on ahead with a checkpoint try that here with the original and you have to do the whole level all over again.
One of the hardest level's in the game for me, here is my top 5 hardest levels in this game 1. Slippery Climb 2. Toxic Waste 3. Fumbling in the Dark 4. The Lab 5. Sunset Vista
Yeah I thought the same when I first got to 'Road to 'Nowhere' however after many attempts I managed to get somewhat used to timing all my jumps correctly therefore I didn't find 'The High Road' too tricky as it's after Road to Nowhere which I had already got used to a bridge level by then but one thing I can say it is a fair bit trickier than Road to Nowhere I do see where your coming from ;)
i remember everyday coming home from school i just use to run to my room and turn PS1 on and play this even when i completed the game i still was playing all day n night like it was new miss those games crash is one of my all time great games
No slippery climb is harder seriously slippery climb is harder. Never got a game over in this level to get the gem i got multiple game overs in slippery climb to get that red gem .
I don't whats more scarier. That you almost died at 1:08 or the freakin swinging axes. That was excruciating but so impressive to watch you breeze through effortlessly like its nothing. 😣
@Tommeke11 THAT'S where the last Cortex mug is! I've been wondering where it was...well, thanks! And I'll try Sunset Vista's next. Good thing is, dying doesn't interfere with getting mugs.
Between 20 and 30, I think. As I said in the description, at least half of them ended on the first part. The rest really isn't that bad, but it's much harder than the pathetic Lights Out.
@TheHorrorKing1 Slippery Climb was hard too for me, but for some reason not harder than Fumbling or Sunset Vista.. :p Slippery Climb isn't that hard if you have some practice and take your time. I'd say patience is a golden rule for that. Memorising the level also helps. And another trick is to count when stairs go up/down. The number of the stairs refer to how much seconds it stays up/down (I think, not quite sure). Which gems do you have to get? :)
Yeah, I got the gem a few hours after I made that comment. Last jumps I did where pure luck. It took me maybe 40 tries. Never going to do that level again, haha. Thanks for asking! :D
This is going to surprise most of you, but the very first colored gem I ever got on the first "Crash Bandicoot" was the gold one from "The Lab". Great game!!!
Booyah! Remember when I said this one was the only gem I didn't got? Well, today I finally got it! :D It took me more than 10 attempts and I kept dying in the later section of the level every single time. It made me mad and as a protest I did all the bridge levels and Slippery Climb in one row without dying. For me those were a lot easier compared to Fumbling In The Dark. Slippery Climb is way too overrated compared to this madness spit from hell.
This is the hardest crash bandicoot level ever made by far, slippery climb was really easy it only got me like 6 attempts to complete it, instead with this one it got me more than 40-50 attempts to make it
@TheHorrorKing1 I wish you the best with that. Oh, you'll need those 2 keys from the Cortex bonus rounds for that! :D There is one in Sunset Vista and one in Jaws Of Darkness, but be careful with that last one. I searched ages for the 2nd Cortex mug, but when I jumped on one cobra instead of spinning it, I realised that if I spinned it the cobra flew against a TNT and that caused an instant explosion which destroyed a box containing this Cortex mug. Pain in the ass.. xD
Kyle Campbell The spiders were nothing compared to the blades that kept swinging. I was on the edge of my seat watching thinking Crash was going to die.
I don't remember having to bounce on spiders at the end. Does this level have changes in it depending on what region you are? I remember a bunch of blades and falling platforms at the end.
This level is one of the reasons why I hate the requirements of getting all the Gems. It's almost impossible to complete this(among other levels) without dying at least once.
@TheHorrorKing1 Yeah, It was kinda rude of Naughty Dog to place that cobra right in front of it. Just discovered it by accident to be honest, the reason afterwards. :p Jup luckily it doesn't, but still those bonus rounds aren't that easy. It's mainly based around last-second decisions and TNT-playing. The N. Brio bonus rounds are insane to be honest. My new goal is trying to beat all bonus rounds in the game with getting every box. Just for fun though. :)
@SyntaxMagenta :) I played Boulder Dash earlier and finished it on my first try... The Lab and Sunset Vista are the hardest levels in the game, in my opinion. But to each their own difficulties..
@TheHorrorKing1 Thank you! Yeah, you can make those games as hard as you want them to be. For instance doing Crash 2 and 3 "without dying" to get a gem. I like making my own game of an existing game. Fantasy is wonderful. You should try it! ;D
@TheHorrorKing1 I fully agree with you on that. The original Crash Bandicoots were by far the most challenging and most fun. I mean.. Look what they did to Tiny.. I hope that Naughty Dog will focus back on Crash and gaining the development rights or some at least some new kind of great platformer after Uncharted 3. Nowadays I'm playing the arcade. Highly addicted to the first Donkey Kong arcade game. Simple look, hard difficulty but lots of fun.

I agree.
That feel when you complete this level finally after dozens of tries..
Only a dozen? If that's all it took you then you're a mlg
I know what you're talking about
the first crash game is so... Strange when compared with the others. So unstructured and very challenging. But I still love it.
oreomonogatari I feel like it's a bit darker too. No humor and pretty straightforward
Well it was the first in the series so it's understandable that it's a little unstructured
It was meant to be 1 game only. Sorry for replying this late.
@@TheHurdyGurdyMan. except for some Crash death animations .
Hardest gem in the game here. Took me like 70+ attempts.
I went like 97 life’s to like 34
I love how Naughty Dog used the lack of technology to their advantage. The beams and metal platforms are not visible until last second, making it hard to tell where you're going. If you were to put this type of level in a video game today, people would rip you a new one.
I just realized why The Lab used a door, Toxic Waste used an elevated floor, mist in High Road to Nowhere, all to "lazy load" the textures
No not really people still like this
Damn CB1 has been most challenging of all series!
Crash 4: Yo
I did a perfect run-through of this level once, I even lost my Aku Aku mask near the end and just kept jumping perfectly in the dark until the end...except I didn't know about those first secret boxes. Now, as usual, I'm lucky to make it to the second checkpoint without dying once.
This level is pure muscle memory and fast reactions. This was harder than Slippery Climb and Boulder Dash for me.
Well duh, Slippery climb isn't that hard and Boulder Dash is really, really easy
@@GamePlayMetalFor HIM.
"I beat dark soul"
Aww that's cute
Dark Souls is like a training area to Crash Bandicoot 1 100%.
This level gave me so many problems. I kept getting stuck on the terrain at the start more often than not when trying to jump for those first few boxes. Definitely my least favorite area in a relatively fun game.
I find most of the levels on the third island to be simply EVIL in difficulty. This level is very difficult, nicely done
Currently on 98% game completion and fighting through this level for the millionth time! 😩
Rahsolo right there with ya brother

Same. This level was pure muscle memory. When I finally beat it, I screamed.
@@briarmason8737 me too lol.
This comment 5 years ago. Did you end up getting the gem for this level?
I know exactly how you feel, as I have experienced 100+ attempts myself. All I can say is keep trying. You'll make it through eventually.
One of the hardest level's in the game for me, here is my top 5 hardest levels in this game
1. Slippery Climb
2. Toxic Waste
3. Fumbling in the Dark
4. The Lab
5. Sunset Vista

Robert Atkinson prototype is even harder
What's the difference between original and a prototype versions of games?
Slippery Climb has always been easier than Sunset Vista for me. Fumbling in the Dark can go fuck itself though.
So it's basically one of those dark levels from Crash 2, just on crack. Niiice.
GG, amazing performance! I personally find this stage even more difficult than “The high road” and “Slippery climb”.
Naughty Dog should send out a crash game consisting of nothing but hard levels. no more wasted memory!
Having to do a platinum relic with the remastered level ..
Miguel Angel Medina Rise Oh Yeah
It's not too hard
Oh yeah, by the way, now there's a Time Trial relic associated with this level. You're welcome.
This one took me so long!!! Thought all the others so far were pretty easy with few difficulties, but this one was sick tough for me!!!
13 years ago, when I'm 14 years! Wow! This is very cool😂🔥
i remember everyday coming home from school i just use to run to my room and turn PS1 on and play this even when i completed the game i still was playing all day n night like it was new miss those games crash is one of my all time great games
This is by FAR the hardest Gem in the game. Waaaay harder than Slippery Climb and the High Road.
I bet you the Naughty Dog Devs published this game, looked back at it, and where like "Crap, we placed the Purple Gem in the wrong level!"
This has got to be the most difficult level in the entire series
nah stormy ascent gets that title
@@jackpederson6979 One that was actually INCLUDED in the games...
@@talondiwisch5206 yeah i know

Soo vital that you keep the momentum going, hesitate and fall
I remember that this was an introduction to the fireflies in the next Crash after this. I love dark levels like this, it's fun!!
This is also the level that i hate mostly!
awesome work Garland
Naughty Dog said that this level represents Cortex's childhood.
Cortex being fumbled in the dark….explains a lot
This level is really challenging. No doubt that it took me a lot of tries to get a perfect.
glowing masks , dangerous hazards , a range of difficulty .. this level has it all.
no matter how many times you upgrade that mask, it's always on level 1!
Between 20 and 30, I think. As I said in the description, at least half of them ended on the first part. The rest really isn't that bad, but it's much harder than the pathetic Lights Out.
They should actually build a fully-fledged Castle Cortex level.
I remember the first time I played this game (quite a while ago) and came to this level. I lost at least 30 lives...
i love ur vids... old crash is legendary
@JesusCristo2002 how would that surprise us? I got my first coloured gem in that level as well.
@Jakelele22 You need to get the key from Jaws of Darkness. To obtain the key, find all Cortex icons and then win the bonus round.
Out of all the things I knew about this level, never did I realize I had to turn around at the start. Holy crap.
This level and lights out are my favourite in the entire series. Idk why though there's just something about them
I believe you are thinking about Lights Out, the other dark level. This is the bonus level right above it.
there's a second bonus round in Jaws Of Darkness that unlocks this level if you beat it.
This level was the bane of my existence.
I will forever hate this level more than any other crash level...ever
WHOA you made this look easy... I used to hate this level so much for its difficulty!

I did indeed get 100%. Watch part 26. When I hit the blade, I lost my Aku Aku mask.
the fact that ur THiS far!? ill give u that respect =) i nvr even seen past the first island lol
I always forget the boxes in the beginning. They should have put some more lights in your spawning area.
1:07 you got very lucky there Garland
Yeah, I got the gem a few hours after I made that comment. Last jumps I did where pure luck. It took me maybe 40 tries. Never going to do that level again, haha. Thanks for asking! :D
@TheHorrorKing1 It truly was. Damn, my knees were shaking afterwards. I highly doubt that I can get this gem a second time. It's insane, man..
I went from 99 lives to 25 by the beginning area
why would crash need the uka uka for lighting (or aku aku i always forget who is who) when there are candles ?
Stormy Ascent should be after the lab,i mean last level before cortex.
Those boxes were back there the whole time?!!!
@lilItalia93 you have to get the key in jaws of darkness by getting the three cortex icons
This is going to surprise most of you, but the very first colored gem I ever got on the first "Crash Bandicoot" was the gold one from "The Lab". Great game!!!
Hi, would I be able to use this footage for a video? I'll give you credit but I hace some sound effects I'd love to try in this :D

You can die in this one luckly, the purple gem is
In the level lights out that is more easy than this one
@vgman94 Its old. That info used to be on their website with this level's concept art.
This is easily the hardest level to gem in the original, legendary Crash Bandicoot ❤
nice man just found this game yesterday playing it now
You hit the exact same blade I did! o__O Must be a common occurrence.
This level is the hell, when you are 100%ing the game
I won this level recently and finally completed the game thanks to this although I didn't watch the part of the three spiders at the end O_o
if the 2º key unloks this level, than the first...?
I completed this level without knowing i was missing 7 crates, i was so sad but i managed to complete it 100%. Hardest level in the game.
@Tommeke11 I'll bet! That's why it'll be my last. My next gem to get is Slippery Climb. How was Slippery Climb?
Now, Aku Aku is a light mask (because the level is dark), and exist a lot of Aku Aku crates but nothing works... interessant...
