Keith Merrow- HND "Combat Knife" (lol) Pedal Demo, Metal.

- I was commissioned to demo this pedal by a company in China called HND Amplification. This is their tube preamp pedal called the "Combat Knife". I have it plugged into the effects loop of my Quilter Aviator 2x10, using the amp's power section. It's mic'd up with an SM57 and an Audio Technica AT2020 Condenser. Those mics are running into my UA Apollo Quad interface, then into Presonus Studio One Pro (DAW).
There's significant post EQ on the guitar tracks during the playthrough, as usual. However, the pedal test section has no post EQ applied.
It was kind of a fun challenge to get such an unassuming rig to deliver a metal tone!

The guitar used in the video is Jeff Loomis' custom Schecter. - www.schectergui...

So uh, how isn't this guy more widely known I just figured out about him because of Jeff Loomis and he plays rhythm better than most popular metal guitarists out there today.
I'm here just for the song, not for the pedal! :v
Come back here almost daily for the riff @ 0:54. It's just too sick...
The JL Custom Schecter looks totally badass. I love this guitar.
Mike Learn painted it
can we have more of that at 1:48? honestly this is one of my all time favourite solo's anyone has played
Couldn't agree more!
i think keith actually has the capacity to come up with some unique solo lines over the top of his awesome rhythm parts
If someone has the tab...
You have something that not many guitarists obtain, own recognizable sound and style.
It's quite amazing what you squeezed out of the quilter amp. That combat knife sounds like just the ticket for turning every normal amp into a high gain monster.
Sir, always enjoy your demos. Its also nice to hear you rip out a solo now and then too.
love the tone controls, nothings harsh or muddy! and the boost is insane!
Awesome! I'm glad that the guitar mike air brushed for Jeff made it back from tour!!
I like it. It sounds like it would sit in a mix with another contrasting tone very well. The lead tone is great on its own.
killer tone with that unassuming setup
Can't wait for the album with you and jeff loomis!!! Good luck to you bros and best of wishes from georgia!
... hoping to hear THE PROJECT sooner or later !!!
These review vids are awesome! Always look forward to them.
I love the finish on that Schecter!
seeing you play a schecter makes me feel so complete, schecter forever.
Guitarists take heed to the solo in this video! Its a great example where simplicity reigns supreme. It takes confidence and musical maturity to keep things simple like this solo. Slow it down and find the heart and soul. Riffs included
Amasing solo at the end!

Yeah, it's true, the name sucks. But this sound ... Damn what a sound !! Fucking sick !!! Where can i find this treasure Keith ??
Awesome video and sick riffs btw, as usual !
Mike Marques great sound , I need one too..
Love your playing, love the music you made with Jeff...and love this guitar it looks kinda gothic or obscure..but the sound is, obviusly what it´s its best
Kind regards from Argentina!
So nice at 6:15 aprox...too
Great Tune, Nice Work!! Love that guitar BTW.
Keith, please demo you signature Schecter prototype. I cannot wait until the final version of the guitar is out. Thanks for designing one of the best 7-stringers. I am definitely buying if there is a lefty. And yes, thanks for Duncans, I hate how 90% of guitars for heavy music have EMGs today. Good luck to you!
Love the clean piece at the end. Very Opeth.
I thought Keith said his own guitar was perfect in every way... then here he is playing one of Loomis's. Awesome paint job and playing though!
Keith Merrow Ah, thanks for stopping by the clear things up. I knew there had to be a reason for it. I saw you guys in Pittsburgh when you came through BTW. It was awesome!
Keith Merrow Friend, do you have the tab of the solo ?
It would be awesome!
I want to play it with my KM-7 !
Aymeric Bobeuf on his website.
Hey keith, amazing stuff man!, hope everything is going great with Jeff, that album will be truly great. Keep it up, Cheers!
Great production Keith! Sounds really great. Very in your face and punchy tone.
Man keith is so far ahead of the curve
Very nice Keith as always. I really like that Schecter guitar. Is that the same one Jeff Loomis played on Stage in Oregon you have the video on your channel. Thanks man Keep Metal alive!!!!
that's a little more than I expected, but it looks like I'll be saving for it. thanks
dude you rock. damn you realy have a great riff. scary how similar my playing is to yours but you'd kick my ass
Keith bro , please solo more often ! You have very tasty licks and phrases that accompanies your amazing rhythm playing beautifully! Please add solo's more often! I beg , I beg =(
Coolest guitar I have ever seen and amazing song
Great song, love that damn fretboard. kind of jealous
Perfect as always...
I presume this is material from Conquering Dystopia... Really epic sounding stuff you got there
you can tell that treble is icepick-y without srs post EQ or low pass
Awesome! As always! You have surpassed Kerry King on my influence list!
Where are you? We are hungry for more!
love your videos as always keith.. great job
Keith, I really hope you don't release many of your km6 models. I am buying on next week and would really like to be one of few to have one. I would like to eventually open the case it's in one day, and be able to explain what guitar it is, and people would be like "ooooooh, I want one". And I'll reply "hah" and feel like a king.
that solo was full of story, dig!!
Demo? More like a complete track, wow!
First time I saw Keith did a solo in a song....You should do more of those together with Jeffy!!
Really, don't know why he doesn't play solos often, this one was so awesome
@@steinnbjorn7627 because he has people like Jeff and wes to do it for him
It's one of Keith's songs. It is on one of his first two albums. I think it is lonestar transcend. Sorry but I can't remember exactly. Go through his RUclips channel and you'll find it ;-)
Goddamn Keith, Y U NO SOLO MORE? That was absolutely awesome
It would be great if you posted a tab for this song. I absolutely love It!
I am totally digging this tune. Can't wait for the Conquering Dystopia album release, I can feel that shit is gonna be tight, fast and heavy as hell
Gonna be picking up a Hellraiser 007 Special Edition in a couple weeks.. Pretty damn excited.
The sound of merrow, loomis and englund is fucking awesome!
Rock! Combat Knife is awesome!
This song is called "My Nemesis". Composed by Keith Merrow.
Yeh thought I recognised the axe, Painted up by artist Mike Learn. Looks killer!!! Mad riffs too Keith, really dig your style!!!
Killer. The whole rig, from the Loomis to the amp, and all in between. But best of all is your tone and technique. I get so many ideas from you and your playing. Top notch. The Presonus Studio One Pro is also a killer recording rig. Right now I am using Garage Band because of how simple and cheap. It's not the best sounding, but not bad. When I get my studio together, I am going the Presonus route. Pro Tools is too $ for my need. Glad I subbed!
With that guitar, I could watch the video muted. I loved that neck since I first saw it on Jeff Loomis' Schecter signature.
You have been quiet for a long time Keith, what's up?
Waiting for both, video and the album. Good luck :)
:O Loomis model looks sweet! Awesome video as always!
Nemesis. One of his early tracks. His early stuff is the best!
Sick video man!
Dat tasty solo... *drools* Keith why you no play more solos... :)
Favorite guitarist 🤘🏼
Cool. for musicians that don't have a massive rig or aren't running a high gain amp, this sort of thing is a perfect one stop solution. The gain stage should appeal to some of the doom metal crowd as well as its got that fuzzy distortion tone, plus its valve for the purists :)
Id love to see a video where you post eq something one day
Killer track! I'm hearing a bit of high end hiss on the guitars.
Yeah Keith! You REALLY have to solo more often! Very tasty!
That riff after the intro is fucking sicknasty
Could watch this over paul from guitarworld any day, just wish I had the money to buy some of the gear you review.
You can grab a used AxeFX Ultra for about $1300, but you're definitely better off with an AxeFX II, with that being the one they make now. However, I'd suggest a Behringer FCB1010 or Voodoo Labs Ground Control Pro as the controller for it, as the proprietary controller for the unit, while good, is crazy expensive.
HOWEVER, don't let the price deter you! A friend of mine has an AxeFX II, and its a fantastic sounding unit! Well worth the money, if you ask me.
I'm waiting for a video of your sig schecter dude!
Awesome song writing
I like how you are using Jeff loomis' guitar but it still sounds exactly like you!
i actually like this pedal, very clear sound and would fit good in a modern band
great music!Combat Knife is a peramp, link a poweramp or amplifier"RETURN". so that it is the best sound.
I'll be honest, I never cared for the aesthetic part of Jeff's signature guitar, but DAMN the one in this video is a completely different story
Too bad their site isnt finished .. would like to more about HND .. sadly other they Keiths Demo , not much information is available.
Great leads!
That guitar...I would gladly sell my house to buy that guitar lol !!!
Sweet jam Keith! That's fucking siiick!! U are using Loomis's geetar \m/
I've actually held it, and I want one so bad.
definitely would like to hear more lead lines from you Keith, that was awesome. Is this song gonna be on the album? cuz i really liked it
Lots of upgrades in your studio, Keith! I see the UA Apollo there! Have you tested the ENGL simulations on it? My favourite interface by far!
Jeff Loomis' signature model has 2 EMG 707's built in them, so I assume he put those in this guitar as well. Not sure tho.
it's actually a factory loomis...Saw the release of this one a few months ago
I'd say a lot of that has to do with the audio compression from YT, but yeah I agree.
These tones are my fave :3
Awesome The Faceless hoodie!
Incredible!
Excelente
Awesome!
Nice Faceless hoodie! I got the Autotheism one at their show. Were you doing photography for them at the Hawthorne?
Nemesis yay! Sounded awesome Keith. Sweet new axe. =)\m/
Keith, is this on Conquering Dystopia ? Groovy Riffs Bro !
Hey, really awesome solo you incorporated in that. Sounded a lot like how Opeth uses Blues roots to write theirs, and you even accompanied a slight Rock-like feel to it as well. I think you would do amazingly well revolving a new album around a gloomy sort of feel. I don't mean to imply that you should copy someone like Opeth. I just am aware that you're inclined to the point of finding your own recipe for said idea. You'd blow the minds of thousands.
I like the way the HND "Combat Knife" cuts through the mix... haha
nice set up
It sounds good just not enough low end thickness that i'd like. It's a bit too trebleish for my taste. Sounds great if you want that kind of sound though
Love that song in that tuning :) your comp didn't crash makin this vid to did it hahaha
nice sound
Wow, awesome song. You rule dude. Keep on rocking \m/
I love that guitar!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is ingenious
WOW THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
