Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses a molecule of RNA that could be instrumental in efforts to block stroke and heart attacks.
“With atherosclerosis, you get deposits inside the walls of blood vessels that hamper blood flow. It’s a major cause of heart attack and stroke. A percentage of people who undergo angioplasty to clear away the unhealthy deposits and have stents placed to help keep blood passageways open, experience reclosure of their blood vessels. Scientists working to better understand why have found a molecule of RNA called CARMN abundant in the healthy smooth muscle cells that give our blood vessels strength and flexibility. They’ve also found distinctly decreased CARMN levels in atherosclerosis. When healthy CARMN levels were restored, it dramatically diminished the unhealthy scar formation and cell proliferation that obstructs blood flow. Their findings point toward a novel treatment target for these common conditions. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
