Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses a molecule of RNA that is not only instrumental in efforts to block stroke and heart attacks, but also is essential for the proper functioning of our gastrointestinal tract.
“We talked last time about a long molecule of RNA called CARMN that is abundant in healthy blood vessels … and distinctly reduced in the common condition atherosclerosis. Now scientists have found CARMN is also essential to the continuous contraction that moves food through our gastrointestinal tract. Without CARMN, a painful, potentially lethal situation can occur where partially undigested food gets trapped in the intestines. The bladder and uterus, which are hollow like the GI tract, also may lose their ability to contract and function. The scientists say CARMN appears to be even more important in the GI tract than in our blood vessels because the beating heart can still keep our blood moving. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
