    As a fitter, I tend to lean away from kiln dry sand.. birds can excrete on top of the grass with sand in and cause seed germination. For me, sharp sand days are over now.. too much movement over time. 20mm to dust hard-core and 6mm granno dust 👍

    I used to landscape and artificial turf was becoming popular and its nice to see the new tools you can buy or hire to make life easier when laying! Later, I had it laid in our own garden and never regretted it; looked perfect and I’m sure was a major selling factor when we sold our house. I’m designing our new garden, gets sun, but we have an area where it only gets late sun, so we are going to lay artificial turf to replace the grass, as the grass is sparse there. I’ve treated it, but doesn’t look much. Anyway, thanks very much for all the hints and tips, and generally sharing your skills! All the best.

      NO one will have to mow it or pay for landscaping company to maintain, no weeds, no worries about it looking brown in the hot of summer, and its last for 10 years, just broom it once in a while and add some sand to make sure the grass is straight up and not laying down.

      The measurement depends on the thickness of the grass. We set them so the blades of grass were around 10mm higher than the edging sets, so you wouldn't stub your toes.

    Hi I’ve recently laid artificial grass in my back garden. I laid and wackered mot type 1 and then began to add sharp sand and realised I didn’t have enough to finish the area. I wanted to complete it that day so I quickly ordered more sharp sand and added that to finish my base. Since then I’ve emptied a paddling pool on the artificial grass and it’s caused dips. I’ve pulled back the grass and measured to see I’ve got a thickness of 50 mil of sharp sand. I believe I’ve got too much sharp sand down which is causing the dips. I was wondering if you could advise me on how to solve this problem? Is it a case of removing the sand and adding more mot or would there be an easier solution at this point?

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  3 года назад +4

      Hi Owen,
      Ideally you want 20-40mm of sharp sand, so maybe remove some before re-levelling it, and maybe try not to empty your pool on it in the future 😉
      Hope this helps.

    Did mine about 5 years ago I was told to use a tile batten around the edge and do the base like block paving (wakering higher than needed and screed it off to the right height ) was really hoping you show me a better way of securing the edges down did you say you usually just use those 4 inch staple like pegs? . The battens I've used have al expanded and the ants have had a party underneath so I need to relay it all . I didn't use that top layer which maybe an anti insect product so I'll have to use some of that stuff too. great work guys you always turn out great work

    • @craigbeard2271
      @craigbeard2271 3 года назад +2

      Set your granite dust level and by the time it’s whacked it should be about right height also I wouldn’t brush in kiln dried sand as the hole point of artificial grass is there is no mess and finally don’t lay your membrane on top get a stability membrane lay that on your sub base mot then don’t bother with sand straight in with granite dust then grass on top pin it or if it’s against paving flournch the edge with concrete to hight you would like and glue the edge down for a better finish and obviously make your granite dust level with your flouching hope this helps :)

      That's entirely up to you. I'd probably recommend a skip.
      All the best, John 😊

    Hi, a great video, it's my first time laying artificial grass, we have a similar size garden, however we've lifted the old membrane that was underneath and it's full of old sandy/muddy stone, could I reuse that as my MOT type 1 sub base? Or would it be better ordering new stuff in? Thanks

    End result looks great. In my years of doing grass tho I do question the sand. Other than that. Great. The project as a whole just looks sensational. Not a large area but you have made the most of it and it looks a great place to go and relax.

      Hi John thanks for your kind words, there are different views about sharp sand and just using granodust it’s a good shout but my years of experience tell me if there are any issues with the application not being followed by the manufacturer specifications we don’t have a leg to stand on thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

      Build With A&E if lazy lawn have told you that then fair enough. But go look at how lazy lawn actually lay theirs. I’ve been on LL jobs and they do not follow their own guidelines. I’ve seen grano lay at 60mm on top of soil. Even tho the job has been sold with MOT. their grass is great, especially wonder yarn but I would have them install it.
      EDIT: I will add tho, the problem isn’t with LL as such. The problem is their franchisees.

      Hi John so true Bud I do wonder why they change the installs practices so times, we had that many years ago on a wooden floor which specified a 6mm Gap we questioned it and asked why it wasn’t 10mm a year later after many emails they paid us to relay it with a 10mm gap 😂 I do wonder some times, all the best Tony 👍

    Why did you put sharp sand and then granno down? Thought you either use one or the other on top of the type 1 🤔
