    NIN were ones of the main inspirations in the making of Achtung Baby and Zoo Station is an attempt of making a dance/industrial rock song. It all makes sense

    "I'm ready to say I'm glad to be alive".
    Wasn't sure how to feel about Trent covering U2, but he picked the right song. You can hear the emotion in his voice has changed.
    This is really groundbreaking for NIN and no one is noticing. Keep up the good work Trent.

    This is a demonstration of NIN's capability to create sound. The cover may not do much with arrangements or phrases, but the textures create an aural experience that very few can match.

      I'm not surprised- there are moments that definitely have an "industrial" feel throughout Achtung Baby (Speaking as a former HUGE U2 fan as a kid, who then moved onto NIN and other bands around 12 or so...).

    It's really inspiring to see where Trent is out now when you look back on pretty hate machine. The beginning he started in such a dark place, and to see how much he got his life together in such an awesome way really gives me hope to what one can achieve. Anyone who merely dismisses him for not sounding "angry" is missing the point.

  • @OneHipNinja
    @OneHipNinja 10 лет назад +51

    The point of a (good) cover is to approach an established piece from a fresh perspective while also presenting the covering artist in interesting and often unexpected ways. Doing this as an industrial banger would have been obvious and boring, given both the original sound and the sound of TR's catalogue. This is just about the perfect cover. For the opposite, see Manson doing Personal Jesus versus Cash doing it. Johnny Cash knew what to cover, and why.

    • @alvetica1
      @alvetica1 9 лет назад +3

      More like Manson doing Personal Jesus vs Manson doing Sweet Dreams

    • @OneHipNinja
      @OneHipNinja 9 лет назад +9

      Good point. Sweet Dreams is a fine cover, indeed. Although I think this one is particularly clever because it subverts expectations by being very different from BOTH the original sound of the song AND NIN's "typical" sound. It kind of turns everything on its head.

    • @GLITZandGLOOM
      @GLITZandGLOOM 5 лет назад +1

      Manson's cover of The Ramones' "The KKK Took My Baby Away" fits that description. There's virtually no guitars on it, very different from the original, and stylistically for Manson.
      It's musically beautiful in my opinion. Ramones fans fucking HATE it, but as a Manson fan, I love it. A hidden gem for sure.

    I might have to actually buy this fucking CD just for this song, only because it seems IMPOSSIBLE to find a non-muffled version of this song anywhere online (still grateful for the upload so I can hear it, but yeah). Wish NIN fans had reacted more positively to this, seems like a lot of the fanbase really dislike his dives into Shoegaze; peresonally, I only wish he'd go further, I think that dream-pop esque style suits the aging Reznor extremely well. Something I only noticed this listen: Around 4 minutes, a VERY very low-in-the-mix return of the "it's alright / it's alright / it's alright" vocal makes a comeback, buried in what I believe is probably the guitar track. Very cool

    Obviously, Trent has done many covers in his career. They've always been fantastic in their own right. He has such an amazing way of really reworking something to make it into his own track. This song (aside from Metal by Gary Numan) is quite possibly the best example. The original is great, but I suddenly feel a warm connection with this song that the original couldn't give. I hate to do this, but I literally made a whole video on my channel on why I love this song so much.

    For me, their best in some time. The warmth and beauty but underlying violence in the swarm of guitars, the low and droning harmony that seethes with more tension than a yell. A lot of "NIN fans" seem to think it's not 'hard enough', or U2 is "gay" or something...don't you remember the surging, euphoric noise element of the Nine Inch Nails sound? A Warm Place? Much of 'The Fragile'? "Ready to say I'm happy to be alive", cover seems to show a new way for NIN without being any less emotional.

  • @leadmyskeptic

    Also, I didn't realize until a few listens, but Trent has always been inspired by/interested in early 90's "Shoegaze" music (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc.) this is pretty much the first time I've heard him actually full on do something in that vein. This song could be a lost gem from '92

    The reason people aren't liking it is because they equate NIN with dissonance and U2 are generally without dissonance in their music. The end of this track, atmospherically, is the most like NIN. I, personally, think this is a remarkable cover, and a beautiful merging of Trent's production style and one of U2's most misunderstood songs. Bravo, Trent!

    Honestly, huge NIN fan. I get the comments about it being softer. But Trent has always done subtlety as well as - if not better than - the in your face grind of the machine.
    I read before about ZS being a ref to heroin use around the area in Berlin, and getting clean. Whether that's true I don't know. But the idea of Trent covering it, given his past addictions, is one I definitely can get behind. Taken in that way, it def feels like the calm of realizing i'm ready to move past the destruction.
