Played this for a fanatic Christian at work one day and I guess he didnt catch the lyrics 'cos he turned to me and told me how beautiful it was. Asked me who sang it and admitted it could be played at his church. I think he was excited to introduce a new hymn to his congregation. He kept listening then asked me, "did he just say he's the spite that made me be?" and I said yes....and he kept staring at me...then asked again who sings this and I told him GHOST and he had the weirdest look on his face. I think i hurt him deeply, as if I tainted his soul. We never spoke of God or music again.

And yet the song has nothing to do with what you're talking about...It can be misinterpreted about Satan but it's about the suicide of Selim Lemouchi, guitarist of The Devil's Blood who was friends with members of Ghost.

I was just writing this on another of his videos - I learned the word "Frisson" the other day which basically is that sudden thrill/joy/excitement feeling we feel at certain parts of songs (and other things of course). Ghost are masters of this in every damn song whether intentional or not.

There's at least three Satanic references in the lyrics: the beast with many names, morning star, and "shining light" (Lucifer was the brightest of God's angels before he fell). They also say in the song "he is insurrection, he is spite," and "he is... disobedience".
(As an aside: "Dis Pater" was originally the Roman god of the underworld, and his place in Roman culture was later subsumed into their adaptation/ripoff of the Greek Hades, ie. Pluto, the god of wealth and ruler of the dead. But in the context of this song, they're obviously not referring to Pluto, but to Satan.)
Lucifer (luxferre) is literally "light-bringer" since (in the christian myth) he gave "reason" to humans.
Also The Beast With Many Names is another reference
Naw I've been taking Latin for multiple years. It means "Our godly father, our nourishing mother."
@@georgebailey9231 The word godly is nowhere to be found in these lyrics. You need to put these words into context. Nostro = "Our". Dis is a negating prefix. Pater = "Father". And given that the "Lord's Prayer" is called in latin the "Pater Noster" you can see with the negation that the oposite of god is meant.

As a devout Christian, I always feel really weird listening to this song because I love it so much

Why does that matter when listening to music - I'm honestly interested.
I'm a quite outspoken atheist and I have no problem enjoying some clerical music. I listen to pegan influanced music and some hyms.
I enjoy the music and for that I don't need to "subscribe" to the lyrics.
If I listen to - for example - the heathen hammer by Tyr - I don't think "oh wait they sing about a type religion I don't follow" I think, damn that's a nice rythm and song.
Same for example for "all around my - flyleaf" (which is according to the singer a hym of meeting YHWH.
If the music touches me (so to speak) I don't care for so much if I subscribe to the underline philosophical statement.
Yes Ghost is quite up front with the imagery, but it's only music.
Why, if you had read your book you wouldnt. Satan is the good Guy atleast far less evil Then the ‘good’ Guy.
I also had to unpack my feelings about this song for a bit and what I love is that it’s a pastiche of all the crap that goes on around organized religion... but what’s challenging is it mocks aspects of religious ceremony which can be really nice. So what it comes down to is intention, you know? It’s not just about the performance but the belief. AND THAT MAEKS THIS ACTUALLY AN INCREDIBLE SPIRITUAL BALLAD. Not because it’s hailing Satan, but because it forces a mainstream Christian viewer to reflect on their own religious practices and see what has genuine value and what is just neon and fog.
Alberich I also am a Christian, here are my thoughts on Ghost and their music. Just because the band seems to have a Satanic message doesn't mean you have to buy into it. However if it makes people look into the meanings and history of organized religion I'm all for it. This is from a life long Metalhead and the son of a Minister.
E Holt I should have read your comment before I posted. We see things the same way. Enlightenment to any subject is a good thing. Yes I listen to bands that have darker messages but in the end I am strong enough in my own faith not to buy in to it.

Year Zero is my personal favorite from Ghost. I’m a massive fan, seeing my second show this year when they play with Nothing More (another one of my favorite bands)! I don’t think my girlfriend will be able to contain my excitement as we drive down to see it!

You're spot on with your initial feeling that it's meant to feel like a hymn, and in that sense it IS ironic/hilarious/awesome. I can NOT get enough of this song AND VIDEO! They continue to nail it on the head with their tongue-in-cheek commentary on Western religion. Unbelievable
Interesting fact about this song... Though it was released on the Meliora album, it was written for an earlier album but the song was pushed aside until Meliora. It was also originally named and written as "She is" and was renamed for the new album.

fun fact, the song is not about satan, it was originally written about his mother (and titled She Is) but tobias ended up changing the lyrics up a bit and renaming it to He Is. it's about his older brother.

I cant express how much I love this bands execution of concept. If you watch thier interviews the satanic cult aspect is a show and alot of thier songs are about almost completely different concepts but they make every word and feel fall into the base satanic cult concept because they are extremely clever

(Don't get me wrong. I like death/black metal, too. But sometimes, it's good to have stuff that kind of glides past your ears... until you hear a phrase that makes you go "Wait... what?")

Alright Alex I’m back to spam your comments telling you to check out Eluveitie after watching in silence for a bit. “Inis Mona” or “Rebrith” could be good starting points from different eras in the band. Though I’m sure any other suggestions will be good too since I truly do enjoy all their music.

I would say a cross of Jim Jones, Tony Alamo, and generally any morning TV evangelists who pray on peoples faith for money. But based on the sexual tone (other than it fits for the whole Ghost church thing already) I would agree it is closer to Tony Alamo over all.
