this road plates feel like residential area streets, where people move slow & kids play in the street (I'm from the netherlands so it might be something very dutch)
I'm pretty sure that tiling the road plates two wide with a brick built divider in between would work just as well for a highway or large main street if that's something you want.
Bigger vehicles that are 6 studs plus extra bits wide look terrible on these new plates though. THey may be able to pass each other, but it looks far to small still. The old road baseplate had a width of 24 studs (36 x 36 base plate with 6 stud sidewalk each side), thats 50% more space. I dont even dislike the idea of the new system, but the plates should have been 20 x 20 at the least. (also they are far too expensive...)
@@sebastianmitderaxt203 Not all roads around the world are american-wide. Many cities have narrow roads with minimal wiggle room. I think the narrow lanes of the new plates are very appropriate for residential roads. There is always the possibility to use two roadplates, or one and a half, to create wider roads if one has the space for it.
Bring in Japan these are too big! I sorta jest but if you saw some of the streets you have to squeeze your car into around here you would be shocked. These are fine they just need more types with curves and some way to simulate small rises or changes in elevation.

They should have been included in the Road plate set , but right now the only way to get them is through expensive sets, no real chance of getting more of a few of them unless you have more money than you need. I don't hate this new system, I just really think lego hasn't thought it through to the end! From not enough 2x4 and 1x4 plates, over no curves beeing available, to the Issue of the Modular Buildings, I feel like this system has a long way to go before it actually is at a state where its 100% usable
The way I see the new road plate: Pros - easier disassembly (for cleaning and customization) and doesn't take up too much space compared to its predecessor Cons - too many leftover ramps (really could've used more gray and printed line pieces and maybe we could've seen a drop in prices), incompatible with modular buildings unless a workaround is found, and narrow/cramp passage in tandem with connected structures. It's 50/50 at best.
The layout doesnt actually look too bad, however for the price one pays for it, there should be a bit more House than road. I think most folks would rather just buy 2-4 large baseplates and then let their children build their cities on that
The thing is with this new system you don't need corner road plates, the square is modular in such a way that you can create corners by yourself. add a pavement to two sides and make a corner. it's square, but look at roads inside cities and towns in residential areas. they're usually a grid

Even as a kid I was never a big fan of de baseplate roads, they had way to little flexiblility. I think the fact that the roads are the most prominent pieces in these sets is great for kids, since most Lego sets focus on vehicles. You can get way more creative with these roads. Still, I agree with most people that the price is very high for “just roads”.
Even that could be compensated, but the smaller size with 6-wide vehicles only just fitting on top of all other drawbacks like price, no curves, 2 plates height is just inacceptable.
Those extra ramp pieces would be great in a MOC. They could be used as the roof of a building or connect them and to end to make the round sides or top of a spaceship.
Just a friendly reminder: On that table you see 300 US Dollar of Lego... (and I dont think that includes tax? its just whats listed on us lego online store and US usually doesnt list with sales tax or am I mistaken?) For my fellow EU folk, It is listed at 270 Euro here in Germany (tax included)
300$ also equals a month of grocery shopping for two people, or a decent new smartphone, or a gold ring that's on the cheaper side... *sigh* I guess it's better to not view the hobby from this angle. 😅
Yeah for $300, it doesn’t look like your getting your moneys worth at all. They need less roads and more buildings, with some height and depth to make it feel like a city. I guess they assume kids already have cars and buildings so the roads give them more room than these sets needs, but still.
Just imagine you could get the new Ninjago City Garden for the same amount. So even in Lego univers it's overpriced. Or get normal Ninjago sets for 300 bucks.
A raised highway running through NJC at the same height as elevated railway would be interesting, although it would produce areas which are harder for us bigfigs to see into.
I think these new roadplates have potential and I do hope that Lego will create curves in the future. I wish they included more 1x4 and 2x4 tiles instead of ramps. I also hope they continue with the bike lane.
I seriously hope that Lego sticks with this new buildible Road Plate system for at least another 5 years or so. They could definitely do a lot to improve upon the concept and add different features. This layout is probably the best possible City scape for introducing a new Lego fan to making their own City layout. I couldn't even dream of something like this existing 8 years ago. I hope that they make more shops and residential buildings. Preferably some apartments, a nature park, a transit station, a medical center, or a library or museum.
I think the roads actually look very good, from a distance they make a layout that seems very expansive but once you get closer you really see how minimal the buildings look. It's a shame there isn't more focus on sidewalk space either, which is arguably just as important as the roads themselves
You really managed to set it up as a playable space. Thank you very much for showing it as a whole and additionally adressing the issue of the passing vehicles. I have to say that it looks like fun to play for Kids, combined like that. For me as an adult i really would have wished they made the strees a little bit wider and because of all those tiles they look a bit "noisy" to me. But that may be because i am used to the old style. Thank you for the massive amount of Uploads lately!
I love it actually. Fit in a police station, a bank, a firefighter station and a hospital and you have a complete LEGO City at your disposal that displays awesome and allows a lot of room to move around cars, play catch-me-if-you-can scenes with the police and so on.
Seeing the amount of road you get makes me feel like building a large street that's two road plates wide with a divider down the middle... One could also use all the extra ramps to make a road with a wide shoulder for something like a highway if you are building a layout with a countryside.
If there were enough half plates you could maybe do some dedicated turning lane layouts. I feel like a four lane road might be a bit overwhelming in all but the largest layouts. Definitely like that idea of using the slopes as a shoulder on a highway though
I've actually been in the passenger side of a work truck when the mirror smacked into an outstretched road sign. so the set is accurate to the potential at least,
I bought three sets of plates at 22 aud each to give them a go and love them. Only things I would change: > As Jang suggests, less ramps and more printed tiles and 2x4 and 2x1 tiles. > A hole in the bottom under where the 2x4 plates are added inside the base plates to make it easier to remove/swap plates in the middle > Extend to include angled roads and curves as a future release > Maybe an accessories kit that allows for building gutters around the roads for water run off, adds that extra bit of realism to the street. The buildings in the street need to be lifted a bit so I plan on playing with my setup to allow for some water drains/gutters and small ramps at the street lights. Street lights also need a little button to press for changing the lights and activating the walk signal, plus the walk signal itself is missing.
There are 2 major problems with the new road plates for me - They look too messy and not smooth with all the cutouts lines (this could be solved with pieces with printed lanes and crosswalks instead of the cut outs), and the second problem is that the roads are higher than the ground, which gives the ground a sunken look, when it should be the other way around.
You are only able to use the whole width of the road because there's no room for pedestrians or fences for the houses in many places. I personally don't like this new system at all, but I'm not part of the target group, thank god for small mercies.

That layout looks REALLY good. just 2 or 3 of those sets would be amazing for a kid to play with on their bedroom floor and look like they would offer hours of fun.
I bought 2 of the new building sets and 3 x roadsets for my 3½ y/o son, he had a blast with it. The new system provides much more assembly play and fun for him than the old baseplates ever did. So Lego did something good for the children changing this. I do not think the lack of a turning-plate is a problem. Secondly, it lines nicely up with the old road baseplates system (using no overlapping, just lining them against each other), so the two can be easily combined without much hassle, even in a loop. The lack of additional 2x4 and printed tiles is indeed a problem as pointed out in the video.
He bumps the fire motorcycle and the fire man falls he gets lifted and placed somewhere else, then knocked over again. Maybe the fire motorcycle scooted forward a bit or he’s got bad luck
I recognize the 2x4 tiles are useful for customizing your road plates, but once they're all connected together, the overall road surface is left looking rough/not pleasantly smooth because of all of the tiles every 8 studs in any direction. That is an advantage of the older style road plates.
Playing devils advocate here, in real life driving on real actual roads, in busy city centers like this one here there isn't usually enough space for two large trucks to go side by side each other. waiting for repairs, garbage collection, streetsweepers etc. because there just isn't enough space to go around the truck, it happens more often that I would like.
Honestly I love this, I think it works way better than the previous road system. I hope they release large plates the same size as the base plates the modular buildings are built on so we can swap them out to make the modular buildings more compatible with the roads.
When it's financially possible for me to build my own dream city, I think I'd like to use these road plates to build an elevated portion. The whole city will still use regular baseplates and roadplates, but I'll have onramps that lead up to an elevated main street. Coolest thing about it is that it'll let me build a couple underground train stations beneath it, something akin to a subway station without having to lift the whole city
These are fantastic, as someone who tries to do a lot of Halo MOCs, these are great, you can put the roads double wide for Lego and make them perfect size for Halo figs.
Thanks for this visualisation, those sets look great together!! If laid out in a straight line, I bet that would be a fantastic start to a very long street! and considering this is only the sets from a single 'wave' of city sets, this is an excellent start for folks wanting to build a city up quickly. I agree that Lego need to make more buildings now to accompany the roads, however I feel like buildings are easier to kids to make themselves or at least have 'pretend' stand ins. The roads are a great stable base for kids to play with their vehicles on, and they can easily fill the streetside space with their own builds or even as basis for imaginative play using big duplo blocks or tissue boxes to make skyscrapers :P This new city line feels like a throwback to my childhood, the first Lego set that I can remember was a city fire station that came with a few road plates, two or three vehicles and literally three bits of wall to make the fire station and while I understand why people want to see bigger and thicker and more detailed buildings but for me as a kid, that pathetic excuse for a fire station was all I needed, my imagination filled in the gaps :D
Seems to me if they're going to include road frontage with each set then they have to include four ramp pieces so each set is functional as a stand alone product. They should include extra tiles in the road expansion pack though.
I think that the older base plates were more modernized because they didn’t have panels that made them look worse, but these plates also have their pros
The new streetlanes being narrower than the old roadplates, that's a reflection of real life. Nowadays when a street is rebuilt, it's made narrower for cars, and more room for pedestrians. People drive a lot slower in a narrow street where you risk damaging the mirrors on your car.
Maybe i have missed it, but where exactly is the Sidewalk for the Citizen of this small Layout? I teach my children each day to Not Walk on the Road so ...how is this done with the best Toy in the world?
It's in front of the buildings you attach to the streets. You know how most city and 3-in-1 houses have like 2 to 3 studs worth of sidewalk out in front? Yeah. There you go. I like your way of thinking.
The modularity is nice, but they need to add raised curbs and proper sidewalks in future sets (maybe as small packs with options for bike lanes and such?). And any buildings that are supposed to go with this system should be released with elevated baseplates out of the box.
Remind me, why do people hate these? This looks great! Only thing is I think Lego has got to offer another option in addition to the ramps, then this will be absolutely fantastic!

I think that in future, they will be used more minimally. There will be road sets, and then proper building sets. It's like the modular, literally none of them come with roads.
I doubt it. I think they'll show up in all manner of City sets in order to increase price and "playability". I do get the point that having a few road plates to go with the police station must be fun for a kid.
the ramp pieces may be annoying for city builders, but at the same time, I understand Lego including them, so that any kid can play with just one or two of these sets by itself.
Correct me if i’m wrong but Lego has been releasing shops for years with the creator 3:1. They all fit with the new roads. To me it feels like the new roads were made so that those buildings could be more easily integrated in the city.
I think these new road plates might be good for small districts or neighborhoods. Places that would limit the size of commercial vehicles, such as those with extended mirrors.
Looking forward to further videos about the new road plates - I hope you'll show some of all the new possibilites they create, such as single and multi lane roads, different kinds of barriers separating meeting traffic etc.
Yeah, the road plates and building ratio is way off, needs more building and side builds, otherwise, all you see are roads and it's not very appealing.
this might be wildly impractical, but I think it would be neat for the cyberpunk area to use these. If I remember right, the cyberpunk area was originally supposed to be more "official build" friendly, and I think it would help reduce the resistance to the old roadplates if people saw a full build of a city using the new system.
I think I found a use for these plates now, BRIDGES! Think of it though. Perhaps they could be good bridge plates for those who are still using the old system.
Love the new road plates. The only thing I don't like is the highly visible borders around the 2x4 tiles. I know they won't do it, but it would be nice to have tiles with a slightly larger top.
As a long time fan of Lego, I'm not a fan of the new road systems personally. Like I know it is more better for connecting sets up that have actual studs on the bottom unlike the original road baseplates. I prefer the old road baseplates more and probably will do forever unless they come up with something that really catches my eye, my opinion though on them. :)
I'm still ambivalent about those. On paper, it seems nice and I really like the idea. But when I see them used on a large scale, I found those plates to create quite a lot of visual noise with all the junction plates everywhere. Somehow, this is more striking visually thant a full studded surface as the gap are not regular enough to create a texture that the eye can ignore. I think one of the reason for that is the space around the places where you can insert lines or connector has more room than an usual 2x4 hole. This is probably to avoid having pieces getting stuck but this creates dark shadow lines around those pieces.
Now I have a city that spans an entire room with the regular baseplate system but when I was starting out and struggling to make a city this system would’ve been great

For my city, I decided to have 1 section of normal road plates and a boulevard of duel new style road plates. Yeah I'm going to have a lot of ramps left over!

yeah you'd have to either build on baseplates (expensive), or completely relocate the modular to plates (cheaper but still tedious)
If lego changed the design of the ramps ever so slightly they coul have been used for elevation.

I love the open space, that's something that's really been missing in modern city sets

They need a curved version and an angel connector could open many possibilities.

I have an idea. When making a straight road, put the extra ramps along the sides of the road to add extra width.
That does not makle the lanes wider. It just adds more too narrow lanes …

No sidewalks make it look cramped. Don’t like it compared to the “old” ones so far. Also I prefer the clean look of the classic plates.

I came from the era where the only normal city buildings were the ocasional bank in the police line, so glad new builders can enjoy these road plates!

They didn't need that many slope pieces, however now you can make ramps for train tracks over the roads both old and new

Theory: They are from different universes that build their roads and building differently
I recognize the 2x4 tiles are useful for customizing your road plates, but once they're all connected together, the overall road surface is left looking rough/not pleasantly smooth because of all of the tiles every 8 studs in any direction. That is an advantage of the older style road plates.
Playing devils advocate here, in real life driving on real actual roads, in busy city centers like this one here there isn't usually enough space for two large trucks to go side by side each other. waiting for repairs, garbage collection, streetsweepers etc. because there just isn't enough space to go around the truck, it happens more often that I would like.
The roads look better than I thought but all those lines from 2x4 tiles would drive me crazy
Honestly I love this, I think it works way better than the previous road system.
I hope they release large plates the same size as the base plates the modular buildings are built on so we can swap them out to make the modular buildings more compatible with the roads.
100% agree on the need for more tiles and less ramps! I really hope LEGO will fix that by adding more striped and blank 2x4 tiles.
Curious to see someone integrate these road plates with the train tracks.
Surprisingly no one has shown such a level crossing design yet using these.

When it's financially possible for me to build my own dream city, I think I'd like to use these road plates to build an elevated portion. The whole city will still use regular baseplates and roadplates, but I'll have onramps that lead up to an elevated main street. Coolest thing about it is that it'll let me build a couple underground train stations beneath it, something akin to a subway station without having to lift the whole city

These are fantastic, as someone who tries to do a lot of Halo MOCs, these are great, you can put the roads double wide for Lego and make them perfect size for Halo figs.

If laid out in a straight line, I bet that would be a fantastic start to a very long street! and considering this is only the sets from a single 'wave' of city sets, this is an excellent start for folks wanting to build a city up quickly.
I agree that Lego need to make more buildings now to accompany the roads, however I feel like buildings are easier to kids to make themselves or at least have 'pretend' stand ins.
The roads are a great stable base for kids to play with their vehicles on, and they can easily fill the streetside space with their own builds or even as basis for imaginative play using big duplo blocks or tissue boxes to make skyscrapers :P
This new city line feels like a throwback to my childhood, the first Lego set that I can remember was a city fire station that came with a few road plates, two or three vehicles and literally three bits of wall to make the fire station and while I understand why people want to see bigger and thicker and more detailed buildings but for me as a kid, that pathetic excuse for a fire station was all I needed, my imagination filled in the gaps :D

I'll consider these, those ramps would be great for roofing for my subway station and other buildings while also using the new road plates.

Seems to me if they're going to include road frontage with each set then they have to include four ramp pieces so each set is functional as a stand alone product. They should include extra tiles in the road expansion pack though.
Looking at the city with road plates made me feel nostalgic. though I didn't own one, it was from reading Lego catalogs

I think that the older base plates were more modernized because they didn’t have panels that made them look worse, but these plates also have their pros
The new streetlanes being narrower than the old roadplates, that's a reflection of real life. Nowadays when a street is rebuilt, it's made narrower for cars, and more room for pedestrians. People drive a lot slower in a narrow street where you risk damaging the mirrors on your car.
They look cool, but I'll stick with the old baseplates myself.
Maybe i have missed it, but where exactly is the Sidewalk for the Citizen of this small Layout? I teach my children each day to Not Walk on the Road so ...how is this done with the best Toy in the world?
It's in front of the buildings you attach to the streets. You know how most city and 3-in-1 houses have like 2 to 3 studs worth of sidewalk out in front? Yeah. There you go.

Did you look at of the space in front of buildings? You walk there. A lot of towns don’t have actual sidewalks in real life.

The modularity is nice, but they need to add raised curbs and proper sidewalks in future sets (maybe as small packs with options for bike lanes and such?). And any buildings that are supposed to go with this system should be released with elevated baseplates out of the box.
Remind me, why do people hate these? This looks great! Only thing is I think Lego has got to offer another option in addition to the ramps, then this will be absolutely fantastic!

I think that in future, they will be used more minimally. There will be road sets, and then proper building sets. It's like the modular, literally none of them come with roads.
I doubt it. I think they'll show up in all manner of City sets in order to increase price and "playability".
I do get the point that having a few road plates to go with the police station must be fun for a kid.
I love the bike lane. I really hope they release more sets with that included, so that I can dot it around my city.

the ramp pieces may be annoying for city builders, but at the same time, I understand Lego including them, so that any kid can play with just one or two of these sets by itself.
Correct me if i’m wrong but Lego has been releasing shops for years with the creator 3:1. They all fit with the new roads. To me it feels like the new roads were made so that those buildings could be more easily integrated in the city.
I think these new road plates might be good for small districts or neighborhoods. Places that would limit the size of commercial vehicles, such as those with extended mirrors.

Yeah, the road plates and building ratio is way off, needs more building and side builds, otherwise, all you see are roads and it's not very appealing.
this might be wildly impractical, but I think it would be neat for the cyberpunk area to use these. If I remember right, the cyberpunk area was originally supposed to be more "official build" friendly, and I think it would help reduce the resistance to the old roadplates if people saw a full build of a city using the new system.

Love the new road plates. The only thing I don't like is the highly visible borders around the 2x4 tiles. I know they won't do it, but it would be nice to have tiles with a slightly larger top.

As a long time fan of Lego, I'm not a fan of the new road systems personally. Like I know it is more better for connecting sets up that have actual studs on the bottom unlike the original road baseplates. I prefer the old road baseplates more and probably will do forever unless they come up with something that really catches my eye, my opinion though on them. :)
To be honest New roads are good to make a city black as quickly as possible!
I'm still ambivalent about those. On paper, it seems nice and I really like the idea. But when I see them used on a large scale, I found those plates to create quite a lot of visual noise with all the junction plates everywhere. Somehow, this is more striking visually thant a full studded surface as the gap are not regular enough to create a texture that the eye can ignore. I think one of the reason for that is the space around the places where you can insert lines or connector has more room than an usual 2x4 hole. This is probably to avoid having pieces getting stuck but this creates dark shadow lines around those pieces.
Now I have a city that spans an entire room with the regular baseplate system but when I was starting out and struggling to make a city this system would’ve been great

For my city, I decided to have 1 section of normal road plates and a boulevard of duel new style road plates. Yeah I'm going to have a lot of ramps left over!
