Two possibilities come to mind.
A) It's a retcon.
B) It's a temporal paradox.
Maybe Golden Goomba got hit after invading Pacman, so he lost his golden mushroom?
I think they're going to betray the current Gold Goomba and rebel against him (maybe even causing the current Goldie to join Bowser/Mario)

Having grown up with newgrounds and the plethora of Mario sprite animations they've had over the years, seeing someone like you in the year 2020 still use the base SMB1 sprites and make them look amazing and have it feel like you could just jump into a level entirely created by them, it's pretty god damn amazing.
