      A big problem with using Plot here is that there just aren’t really enough noncreature plot spells at reasonable prices. I think you’d need to use Fblthp, Lilah, or 2MV Jace to make it work. And then you have to cast six extra spells in a turn and then have the mana to get Storm onto the eighth, assuming you play and ult Ral on the same turn.

    Seems odd to critique Expend being boring because it rewards normal gameplay lines while Landfall is one of the most popular mechanics of all time and rewards you for doing even less. Tarmogoyf also rewards just for playing Magic and Richard loves the card.

    • @sidneypowelstock6812
      @sidneypowelstock6812 Месяц назад +12

      I think that the argument that these are "play the game" mechanics is valid, but the mechanics other than expend incentivize you to lean into different aspects of the game. For example casting two spells in a turn slightly incentivizes having a lower average cmc and landfall incentivizes land ramp specifically. Expend doesn't care how many spells you cast or what type of ramp you use so in my opinion it's the most boring version of those mechanics

    • @ShiroyWolf
      @ShiroyWolf Месяц назад +1

      I am mostly in wait-and-see mode with Expend. For Landfall Tireless Tracker appears to be the example of just being rewarded for playing the game. Which is fine for the card to be. But in Pioneer I've seen someone play Urborg/Dryad with the New Capenna fetches and Dread Presence. 8crab plays Oboro. Valakut Scapeshift.. The raccoons are gruul, green is known for ramping and red for rituals. In Modern Manamorphose is just free Expend. I would not be surprised if a dedicated Expend deck pops up in some format.

    If Sunspine Lynx warps Standard, its for the better. We REALLY need more Price of Progress effects to punish non-basics, this type of effect should be in perhaps every second set in various different colours to ensure greedy landbases don´t get too ridicolous again.

    I generally love to listen to the excitement Seth and Crim share for new cards, but also enjoy the meme of Richard weighing in on Standard he clearly never plays. His takes are also so jank, lol. These threats he's talking about in Standard are usually things like Sheoldred, Atraxa, Etali, Knight-Errant of Eos, or Imodane's Recruiter-you don't need to give a card for these. If the opponent's casting something like Breach the Multiverse or Virtue of Persistence, give them the card. It's obviously worth it, in that case. It's not lunacy. Honestly, in my current control lists in Standard I generally run 4x No More Lies, 2x Phantom Interference, and 4x Three Steps Ahead. I'll glad try subbing 2x Long River's Pull for the 2 PI.

      They keep mentioning price of progress. that card costs half as much and deals twice as much damage.
      Like Sunspire Lynx is still very strong but you're not doming people for 6-8 damage for 2 mana. You're doming them for 2-4 damage foe 4 mana and then you have a 5/4 dude without haste. It's still REALLY good. But it's kind of a different card from Price of Progress.
      It needs to be compared to something like Thundering Raiju. A 3/3 hasty flyer that immediatley puts a +1/+1 counter on itself (or another creature) on attack and then deals damage to defender equal to your modified creatures. That's more or less the same amount of damage, depending on the gamestate (if you drop this on turn 4 and you have one other creature out that is already carrying a mounstrous role token, then you're dealing 2 damage +4 flying on attack + the other dude.) it could be more than Lynx. Raiju also has evasion. But it doesn't stop life-gain or damage mitigation. No idea how relevant that will be. But THAT should be the discussion and not "this is price of progress on a creature!!"

      Spree used mana, while the paws allow for power modality but at a set cost. Removing the additional mana payment opens up different design opportunities. Additionally, unlike spree, you can choose the same effect twice. All in all, it’s two different designs basically doing the same thing, kinda neat

      I mean they're quite different mechanics, Spree allows a spell cost 2 mana and be a mediocre proteciton, or cost 7 mana and be an instant speed wrath. For example, I have Giant Tribal and Wurm Tribal (that one’s Dune-Brood and from before Baru made it popular) that have a few big creatures. Typals without much support will also have a hard time getting enough creatures out, especially if they are inefficiently costed and/or it is hard to create their tokens.

I think judging by screaming nemesis from duskmourne though, there might be a red deck which has a wider curve that it can shine in.

    Gift happens as the spell resolves.
    So for Long River's Pull - You cast this targeting a non-creature spell you promise an opponent a gift as the first part of resolving this spell.
    So if this spell is countered or the spell no longer on the stack when this is attempting to resolve, then the gift doesn't happen. But if the target spell is legal and it is resolving then the first part of the spell resolution will be that the opponent that was promised will draw a card, then the spell targeted is countered.

      @@CriticalFeline Well, that could still just be that magic is evolving, he might not like that, but it is still magic.
      Especially flavour wise Bloomburrow feels very in-the-wheelhouse for magic, at least to me. Ixalan and Eldraine were hits in those departments for me too. I didn't like Mkm at all either, which too me came down to a tone that was just a little too goofy and to gimmicky for Ravnica. Had it been toned down, it's own plane or maybe on New Capenna, then I think it would have not stung as much, but it is what it is.
      Otj was it's on thing and while I appreciate the tone and flavour, the worldbuilding was just not very good.
      And while Magic seems to be moving away from more "classic" fantasy and towards more modern aesthetics, Bloomburrow seems to be a rare return to more pastoral vibes, which makes the Stance that this doesn't feel magicy very odd to me.

      I agree with Richard that other sets have felt more traditional MtG than the ones set on the usual planes. The Dominaria sets had too much cross-over universe stuff going on in the aesthetics and art. Whereas LotR and BG were pure and simple fantasy trappings. Just because the sets take place on a usual magic plane doesn't mean they have felt like MtG to everyone

    With Long Rivers Pull, the wording of the gift mechanic makes it sound like it's intended as a cost for casting the spell with an optional mode (ie kicker). If that's the case, the op would draw the gift card and possibly respond while LRP is still on the stack.

    • @danielsniff6405

      I think it has been clarified that the gift and the spell resolve in a way that doesn't allow that, although I don't remember where it was stated.

    Players have been greedy using nonbasic lands and splashing everything, Lynx is a fantastic card to make players more cautious on using so many. Not to mention this may breakup a few existing meta decks and force more 1-2 decks. New rotation and we need new decks. Lynx will help make it happen.

    58:33 The Three Tree City doesn't come in play tapped, so, you can tap one, float mana play a new one, and use this new one on the spot. And that's actually a cool thing to do, specially if you play a deck able to use low cost creatures and high cost spells.

    The white season goes nuts with something like Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation in Commander since you can churn out up to 15 rabbits. The Sunspine Lynx is super busted in Standard because it heavily restricts what you can play. Also kind of crazy in Commander for any mono or 2c red deck. In monored this is just an auto-include.

    I agree with Richard regarding targeting. I can't see any reason why a spell should fizzle if it has multiple effects, just because one of those effects can no longer resolve. I would understand if all targets had to remain legal until resolution, but the distinction in rules between losing one of multiple targets and all targets seems written under the assumption that spells would have no effect if they lost all their targets.

    In the right deck I think Three Tree City is way stronger than Nykthos. I've been testing it in my Mycotyrant deck and it gets you like 10+ mana on turn 4. It's Gaea's Cradle levels of good and makes me want to add more land tutors to my deck just to go get it, even over something like Field of the Dead.

    I think the difference between jaya and ral in standard might be that jaya did fit better into aggressive decks because of her -2. Ral on the other hand seems to be more like a ur control PW that you play out, chump a couple of turns with the tokens and just keep playing the game until you can ultimate. You dont have to play all those spells in the same turn.

Mechanics are great, the amount of flexibility makes decks better than the straight regular power creep we are seeing in Bloomburrow, and the art and setting was much less controversial. A mixture of Ikoria and Eldraine is not fresh.

    Even in the best case Long river‘s pull is only another uu counterspell. Which is good for sure but is in no way broken like Richard mentions (we have counterspell & Manadrain, which are both affordable options now). It‘s also not a secret rendezvous effect because it would need to give yourself some more upside as well. And even if the person you‘re giving the card to is an ally or someone weak, everyone can turn into an enemy down the line. Giving someone resources is 100% still a downside if you are going down a card to remove a threat.
    I‘m a Richard Stan but he‘s utterly wrong on this.

    I think the ultimate is gonna be pretty much useless for Ral. BUT- The ability to Draw 3 cards discard 2, probably ditching at least 1 land so its really draw 3 discard 1 and a land. and then get rewarded for.. playing removal.. lol
    You play 2 removal spells a turn and you get a free removal spell and a 1/1 with prowess, which can defend or close out games.
    Jaya didn't benefit you for playing removal . this ral does. if its used i think that'll be where its used
    can see it fitting into grixis control as a finisher. maybe jeskai
