You've brought me into the 21st century! I learned most of my 'tricks' from some Victorian books (yes I still have them!), but my old hands can't do what they used to, and pro gaff decks seem to only come in Bicycle flavour, so these 'no setup' ones are rejuvenating my popularity down the OAP club! Then I did the trick as I was watching your video for the first time without any practice. It blew my mind that it worked right in front of me. Also the insane thing is the title cards going behind your head. 😁

I really appreciate these self working no set up tricks as I am having a real hard time learning tricks that use sleights. My magician friend suggested the new four volume DVD set on the works of Alex Elmsley and asked if I had seen it. I told him, "I'm not sure about the third volume, but I saw the first volume twice". But seriously Matt I showed some of your no set up tricks to this Mime I know. He was speechless.

So I started watching your videos she’s still not happy she said I’m still watching tv just a smaller screen. Your channel is the first one I’ve subscribed to and I was very surprised to learn I didn’t have to glue a credit card or print of my firstborn’s blood.I will let all the seniors know you can teach an old dog new tricks.I tried both of these tricks this and WTH Mr Koenig tapestry learned both in 5 minutes. Hi Matt, I was wondering, when you pull the 3 of a kind from the deck in this trick, do you remove the other card of that kind? Say you pulled three 2’s. Would you take out the other 2?
I wouldn’t, because the trick then won’t work. I know as magicians we are used to dealing with 4 or f a kind, but here it’s trips all the way. Just three selections.
My joke submission is: Uno, Dos…[poof!!!] the magician disappeared without a Tres. My 9 year old son watches all your videos. You got him into card tricks. He’s at the point where his birthday gift ask was that 20-something pack of bicycle cards from Costco. Your tricks that have setups, he sets them up and then stores them in secretly marked boxes. I appreciate your willingness to make tutorials on card tricks; it have has given my son a wonderful skill that he loves to show off at school. I hope we can win the contest. But I told my son not to stress out about it. Thank you for your videos.

I literally just missed out on performing this trick on Fool Us. I returned a missed call but there was just breathing on the other end of the line, so I abused the scam caller and hung up. Later found out that Penn had taken a bathroom break and I was speaking with Teller on the other end of the line 😂

Matt... I don't know the original effect, but I played with the math some. If, while searching for the 3 of a kind you position the fourth card so that it is second from what will ultimately be the top card, it will be the last face up card dealt. --- Vinny

@MattMcGurk another great self-working trick with four-of-a-kind is The Cards Knew from Card College Lighter. Totally self-working, and one of those that has the spectator asking themselves 'what if I'd chosen differently' routines. Worth checking out if you don't know it.
@@MattMcGurk It's one of those effects that often gets overlooked in the books. I've shown it to magician friends and laymen, and it fries every time. Takes 5 mins to learn as well... it's my go-to when someone hands me a deck and says 'show me a trick'.
Added bonus - you can reveal their cards one at a time at the end of the trick and "predict" the suit. All you have to do is remember the order they placed them on the 3 piles. The order of the 3 cards left in front of the dealer (top to bottom) is simply the reverse order that the cards were placed. Example - In the explanation section of the video, the fives are placed in the following order: D-S-C. At the end (before he flips the cards), the order of the cards top to bottom is C-S-D.
This is mind-blowing! I wonder if there is anything to be said for having them remove 3 cards that we don't know and place them face down and then proceed the same way, asking them to stop you if they see any of their cards - which of course they won't until the end ? This may require them to jot down their 3 selections so they are not forgotten, but it might be worth it.

two days ago I found a deck of cards in my closet. back then my best trick was to shuffle the cards without dropping them. Then I found your channel and after three videos I already managed to trick all my friends

Magician here. You should teach people how to cull cards while casually spreading through the deck, so that even tricks that require a set-up can be done impromptu with any deck. 😉
Yes I agree. It is my intention to start teaching some basic sleight-of-hand on the channel. It’s just that some comments have reflected that even counting is classed as a “set up” and put people off! 😂
There is a method, where you have no need to switch the counting, when you deal the cards for the third time: The first pile must consist of 14 cards, the second of 15, the third again of 15 and the last one of 8. It works!
That does not make sense. Once you remove your 3 of a kind there should only be 49 cards remaining. 14+15+15+8=52. Are you leaving the jokers in your deck ?

My three cards are a 1972 Pete Rose baseball card, a 1973 Pete Rose baseball card, and a 1971 Pete Rose baseball card. That's the best I can come up with on short notice as far as something funny.
Hey Matt, I have tried this trick by not keeping the card on the first 10 and started with the 2nd 3rd and 4th pile which is 9. I did not get the result. I am failing I am getting only cards and not the third. Will this this trick not work in this manner. We should keep the card on the first pile of 10 cards compulsory, leaving the last pile of 9 cards?
Whenever I show a card trick to anyone, they always say "let me shuffle them first". If I don't let them, they know there is a setup and aren't interested any more.
Love this trick. But, to remove confusion, I ask them to choose their favorite suit and then take out the "family" - jack, queen, king - and proceed from there.

If you act like it’s unimportant, then they will too. Just be relaxed, have fun and don’t worry about getting caught. You are just making piles of cards. You’ll be fine 👍
Warning! This one only looks easy, it is prone to many f-ups. First of all never do that with an old deck, if you deal two cards instead of one by accident, you're in trouble. I tried it with borrowed deck of old cards and tries 8 times until I got results. Did everything well, except these old cards were sticky and it was so easy to deal two cards by chance.

Correct! You need 52 cards! Just remind them that there is still one more in the deck that doesn’t count. 👍

My three cards are a 1972 Pete Rose baseball card, a 1973 Pete Rose baseball card, and a 1971 Pete Rose baseball card. That's the best I can come up with on short notice as far as something funny.

@@MattMcGurk Actually that would be possible to include baseball cards when doing the trick, but you'd have to take three cards out of the deck.

I have tried this trick by not keeping the card on the first 10 and started with the 2nd 3rd and 4th pile which is 9. I did not get the result. I am failing I am getting only cards and not the third. Will this this trick not work in this manner. We should keep the card on the first pile of 10 cards compulsory, leaving the last pile of 9 cards?

The principle was first described in a manuscript by John P. Hamilton, “The Eyes of the Gods”, marketed in 1948 by Max Holden. An oldy but a goodie!

The war against setup card tricks is a terrible thing. In the words of the ancient mages, cull, baby, cull.
Whenever I show a card trick to anyone, they always say "let me shuffle them first". If I don't let them, they know there is a setup and aren't interested any more.
Love this trick. But, to remove confusion, I ask them to choose their favorite suit and then take out the "family" - jack, queen, king - and proceed from there.

If you act like it’s unimportant, then they will too. Just be relaxed, have fun and don’t worry about getting caught. You are just making piles of cards. You’ll be fine 👍
Warning! This one only looks easy, it is prone to many f-ups. First of all never do that with an old deck, if you deal two cards instead of one by accident, you're in trouble. I tried it with borrowed deck of old cards and tries 8 times until I got results. Did everything well, except these old cards were sticky and it was so easy to deal two cards by chance.
Yes grab yourself a new deck, you deserve it!
