The spec can pick his card from the either the 26 card pile or the pile he took the cards from. If he picks the pile he took cards from, the trick remains the same except his card will be the number to cards taken plus 1. If you count the cards while doing the Klondike Shuffle and subtract it from 52 you know the number of cards cut. You then ask spec to give you the cards cut and hold in your hand and say the number of cards.
Matt is an excellent teacher with wonderful tricks to share. But beyond that, he has the most important attribute any performing magician can have: a warm, engaging personality and the ability to make the tricks fun for the participants.

Thanks Matt - I was initially going to complain that this didn't work then realised I left 2 cards in the box! It's brilliant - the local kids think I am the worlds greatest magician.
Automatic placement principle is awesome. John Bannon's booklet Outnumbered has a couple of cool tricks that use it. I like this variation... I had the spec look at the bottom card, and place their packet back without a shuffle. I then talked them through an Ose cut, which worked nicely.
@@MattMcGurk You should do a series on tricks from a shuffled deck. I think self-workers from a shuffled deck pack a massive punch with spectators, particularly when you can let them shuffle beforehand.
Very nice. Maybe make it a "do as I do" trick which solves the "sketchy" counting at the beginning & "dull" counting at the end. At the start, shuffle & hand them slightly half the deck then having you both count by threes "so we have the same." When they come out ahead, say "I'm short. Give me any X cards you want so we're the same." Proceed as before. You both shuffle, cut and pick a card (yours doesn't matter).Swap, "shuffle" their packet. Get to the Klondike ahuffle. At the end, have them count their packet at the same time you deal down to their card. IMO, that's less remembering a number & more magically "arriving" at the card at the sane time.
You make some good points. What I like to do is have a marker card (e.g. the Queen of hearts) 26th from the top before starting the trick. That way, you can just casually spread the deck looking for the queen, and take all the cards below the queen, saying, "we'll just divide the deck into two piles. Then both piles can be shuffled and you can proceed.
