In that scenario, it would have been over for Goku (who Vegeta thought would have lost the beam clash and been immediately incinerated anyways), but Vegeta has clearly destroyed planets before (even ignoring anime-only filler) and obviously has a protocol for when it gets to that point; this time being his space pod.

Saiyan Saga Vegeta vs Goku went from midday to sunset, and considering Nappa had already been cooking the Z fighters and they waited 3 hours for Goku, it’s a GENEROUS offer to say that they fought for maybe about an hour at most.
