Was my grandpas favourite song. They played it at his wake and I just... couldn't hold back the tears. He was my role model of what a proper bloke should be
I'm an American and this is one of my favorite Country songs. Sadly, in the U.S., the robust Country scenes in Australia and Canada don't even seem to be acknowledged as existing. Thank goodness for internet radio, international Country Music charts being posted online, and Australian and Canadian labels putting their music on Spotify.
My husband and I drove two-up for 21 years and Slim kept us company on many a long tiring night! Prior to us meeting my husband helped pull Slim out of a mud bog in Hughened back in the 60's in the old Ford mainline and he was never forgotten!
Slim is the one that made me fall for the trucking industry 36 years ago. This clip brings back memories of when I first started going up and down the old Highways, the days when we could almost slap our mates as the passed us. The industry gave me it's ups and downs, but I'm glad thanks to Slim I chose this work. The new drivers of today haven't got a clue how things were and how it still should be in the Australian trucking industry. Thank you Slim and your Family.
Joy said, when I 1st showed Slim the Lyrics I'd written for Lights on the Hill, he said..'NO!! TOO MANY WORDS!! TOO LONG!! AND I'D NEVER HAVE TIME TOO CATCH A BREATH!! I DON'T WANT TOO SING IT LOVE!! AND GO AND GIVE IT TOO SOMEONE ELSE!!😯All I can say is, Thank God he changed his mind!!
He was such a great country singer truck songs he sang took me back when I use to drive them years ago he sertanly was a great singer of all times rip slim
I hope you both has a nice time. I love his songs that I kept playing over and over again, Slim sang wisely and beautiful songs. How are you doing Johanna?
Memories travelling and stopping at the old Golden fleece Restaurant and having bacon and eggs it's not the Destination its the journey you enjoy the people you meet on the way and new things you see . ❤️💯💯
Just listened to ABC Conversations one hour program on Slims life. His wife wrote this song towing a caravan and driving a truck on the way to Queensland. Slim was ahead driving a truck and caravan. Great story. Turned 90 at Tamworth Country Festival..
My dad lived with Slim for a few years before I was born, said he was one of the best men that he had ever met. Slim Dusty's music was pretty much the only music I grew up on, I didn't really get into R&B and all the other genres until later in life.
What a legend, I would rather this music along with Chad morgan and all the other country music greats then all this new crap that's coming out. all the new pop singers get about a year of fame and then it gets old but slim dusty has had about 6 decades worth of fame and many more years to come what a ledgend👍
Still the only country music singer who went to many places and remote, played music, only one to this day highest number of albums in Australian music. And stayed in this country for all albums without going overseas to make albums.
Traveled all around the outback as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s listening to Uncle Slim on the cassette deck. A truckies breakfast at a Golden Fleece roadhouse was always a highlight. It was enough food for a week!
Born and bred with slim and joy on there records and concert's. Still play his records must have nearly 500 records. This is true Australian not ##!! In c!!!na
I have a lot of respect to Slim and Joy they traveled all over the country town halls Flat bed trucks you name it they did it true pioneers of Country music his music will live on forever I miss you slim they played one of Slims songs at my Dads funeral looking forward looking back it brings me to some sadness God Bless the rest of the family Rest Easy old mate
@@meganlawson4575It was their song. Slim and Joy both acknowledged hat i wouldn't get any traction if it was known to be written by a woman. Times change. Joy and Slim were a team: credit wasn't the issue, it was making performances that would fill seats and sell records.
@@meganlawson4575 So true, Joy wrote the lyrics, and has sung it many times herself, as she puts it, the way it was meant to be sung. It however, will always be associated with Slim.
My Dad grew up on Slim. Rain Tumbles was released the year he was born. So did I but I also was exposed to 80's & 90's and still find relevance but I'm no way into country music. Nothing will ever sway me from Slim. Will always hold a special place in my heart. I'll miss ya Dad but you'll always be in the long yard.
This song has once again found popularity with country artists, with Lee Kernaghan and Troy Casser-daly/Adam Harvey doing their own take on it, not to mention all the other versions out there.
This song makes me relive the life of my grandson Jesse who passed away because he couldn't get the help he wanted the system let him down love ya jess

This is my favourite song. When I was a kid growing up it's the only song I knew the words too. My dad and I used to sing this while we went fishing. It was our fun past time. This song reminds me of my father. He has passed away 5 yrs now but every time i hear this song I get all torn up but still I sing to it.
It really seems I’m not alone when I think of my Dear Late Dad when listening to Slim, really the only music he listened to. Great video and condolences to all in the same boat 🙏
How about some acknowledgement that Joy wrote this song not Slim. "Slim's wife Joy McKean who won the very first Golden Guitar in 1973 for writing one of Slim's most iconic songs: Lights on the Hill."

Not a truck driver but have done many trips throughout oz and can fully understand this situation, even worse now with LED lights... 👍👍
Arse-loaded fourbies with light bars and an ignorant mongrel behind the wheel...

Slim Dusty and Joy McKean are national treasures.
An example of why story telling music will forever exist. A great blessing we have.
Songs were the way story's were remembered. It wasn't always noise and screaming that people are now calling singing.
My dad lived with Slim for a few years before I was born, said he was one of the best men that he had ever met.
Slim Dusty's music was pretty much the only music I grew up on, I didn't really get into R&B and all the other genres until later in life.

I bought the album for my mum,God bless her and later she gave me all her country albums as she could not play them anymore.
Slim and his wife Joy were fantastic, we grew up with their songs and loved them.

His best and most influential song. No one has even a similar voice! As good as any American country singer, if not better.
