What a fabulous poet and singer Slim Dusty was. This beautiful song exactly describes the wonderful Australian bush which I experienced first hand in 1969/70 when driving around and across the entire country sleeping under canvas every night. I shall never forget that incredible experience.
This song describes our great Southern Land of Australia to a tee, especially our unique Bushland. Can you imagine a lonely Ausie soldier trying to explain to his ally and comrade what Australia truly was like. Thanks Mack Cormack and thanks Slim dusty.
Slim dusty the one n only true Australian country singer .and I was also very lucky to meet slim dusty when I was just 12.years old and my father Barron plumb brought me his latest album at the time and I got slim to sighn it 4 me I am now 34 years old and my father has passed away 7.years ago now just one of a great memory of my late father and my idol slim dusty

Yes mate. I worked driving harvesters for some lovely Usa folks and they all preferred Slim anyone else. Johnny Cash ran second and many others but the old bloke d say Put some Aussie Slim on please pere?
Yes !!! Slim Dusty sings every song to make Me Thank God to have been able to know as much of him as are in each of his songs/videos which I have thus far heard/seen in the last few/4 or 5 years. From what I gather, he was a part of people's lives throughout Australia, and now way beyond. He wrote songs about many he met and made light of none. He will always be a wonderful person to me. I am pleased to just know him these ways
Got a daughter and grandchildren in Melbourne which I have visited several times. During my first visit in 1999, I visited a record shop and heard some delightful music. The shop lady said it was Tony O'Connors' cd "Of Dreams and Discoveries". I bought one and confirm it is played regularly. If any Australian has it, I would be delightted for his opinion. Kind regards from England. August, 2023.
Slim describes the things you miss when you are overseas, makes you homesick for our great land down under, I have travelled all over the world but there is no place that comes anywhere near Australia, and Slim is part of that.
I've always loved this song. I think It featured on live in Wagga Wagga. Barry Thornton at his best. If you like this then listen to "Homestead of my dreams" by Smokey Dawson and another Slim number "when the moon across the bushland beams". All these invoke memories of my youth when Slim ruled and I live way outback. I still can't look at a full moon without thinking if that beautiful song.
Have you ever seen a Wheatfield in the morning as the dawn wind ripples through the golden grain . Yes seen the dawn break over Wheat fields going to Wangaratta
2020 Feb 1 a place of Home, is where we dearly clinged to both in our hearts and ears what can't be seen can almost be heard clearly like those of the railroad cars rumbling by. darkness all around and the conversation that echoes through the silent is but those of the Great Horn Owls sounds that it knows so well. the many noises of the motorcars can rock me to sleep tonight i lay awake the thought of my homeLand far away in the Island country Singapura where the millions of stars lights up the table of the heavens. only stories i knew were those said by father whose father was a farmer who tilled the Land before Sunrise to after Sundown. i am a city deweller whose sat above the clouds flown by another and watched the delta flying formation of fighter planes over the Ocean of which i had putted together along with many others who had done before. God's country is where He has placed us, from the shores of the Palm trees to the Ridges of the Rocky places because i too has walked the trails of the eastern Rockie Mountains if God so willing i will be doing the same watching more of the Sunrise on golden wheat fields to the colours of the manys lakes brightly displayed hour by hour on the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.
Lyrics : A Picture of Home Lyrics My story swings around the bunch of soldiers, Resting close behind the battle scene, There were men from many nations represented, A rugged cup united nations team, They spoke about their own beloved homeland, Resting far from all the tortured battle scenes On this day the lad who claimed the most attention A young Australian soldier who began. Oh,I have never claimed to be a Namatjira, I have never taken up the painters brush, But in words, my lads, I'll paint for you a picture, Of my homeland in the wide Australian bush. Have you ever seen the western plains at sundown? And the firey streaks that seem to blaze across And then later in the evenin' see a ghost gum And then silently we meet the Southern Cross? Have you ever heard the wild swan in it's calling, In the stillness of some far away lagoon? Or seen the place where brumbies come to water? They always come at the rising of the moon. Have you ever wandered through some burning gully In springtime when the wattles are in bloom? If you've never, then you've never known the sweetness, That fills the air around with it's perfume. Have you ever gazed upon a peaceful homestead, With the old Blue Mountains standing in the view, See the homestead cattle grazin' by the river, From the hillside bounds an old man kangaroo, In the ev'nin, see the smoke rise from the chimney, Tells that day is done and soon its time for tea, Hear the jackass laughter ringing through the bushland? Well that's God's own country, and home sweet home to me. Have you ever seen a wheat field in the morning, When the dawn wind ripples through the golden grain, Or wandered through the farmlands in the dawn time, And smelt their earthly sweetness after rain? Oh, I have never claimed to be a Namatjira, As I'd said before, I've never used a brush, But I hope, my lads, I've painted you a picture, Of my homeland in the wide Australian bush

Lyrics :
A Picture of Home Lyrics
My story swings around the bunch of soldiers,
Resting close behind the battle scene,
There were men from many nations represented,
A rugged cup united nations team,
They spoke about their own beloved homeland,
Resting far from all the tortured battle scenes
On this day the lad who claimed the most attention
A young Australian soldier who began.
Oh,I have never claimed to be a Namatjira,
I have never taken up the painters brush,
But in words, my lads, I'll paint for you a picture,
Of my homeland in the wide Australian bush.
Have you ever seen the western plains at sundown?
And the firey streaks that seem to blaze across
And then later in the evenin' see a ghost gum
And then silently we meet the Southern Cross?
Have you ever heard the wild swan in it's calling,
In the stillness of some far away lagoon?
Or seen the place where brumbies come to water?
They always come at the rising of the moon.
Have you ever wandered through some burning gully
In springtime when the wattles are in bloom?
If you've never, then you've never known the sweetness,
That fills the air around with it's perfume.
Have you ever gazed upon a peaceful homestead,
With the old Blue Mountains standing in the view,
See the homestead cattle grazin' by the river,
From the hillside bounds an old man kangaroo,
In the ev'nin, see the smoke rise from the chimney,
Tells that day is done and soon its time for tea,
Hear the jackass laughter ringing through the bushland?
Well that's God's own country, and home sweet home to me.
Have you ever seen a wheat field in the morning,
When the dawn wind ripples through the golden grain,
Or wandered through the farmlands in the dawn time,
And smelt their earthly sweetness after rain?
Oh, I have never claimed to be a Namatjira,
As I'd said before, I've never used a brush,
But I hope, my lads, I've painted you a picture,
Of my homeland in the wide Australian bush
Thanks for the Lyrics mate
