At Play On Tabletop we make entertainment a priority and I must say... Both you and Jon are probably the two most entertaining RUclipsrs in the mini-painting world. Thank you so much for the informative and fun videos. The hard work you put into them is seen and appreciated.
Hey Scott! Fellow speed painter here, a tip with metals is to use the Vallejo Metal Color series for airbrush and apply them with a brush, they are thin and covers extremely well, it has saved me a ton of time when doing chainmail and guns. They even cover white and yellows quite well. They literally eat your brushes though so use the synthetic cheap brushes.
As someone that regularly paints armies with hundreds of models, the quick advice I can give you from the limited view we see of your process is to stop worrying so much about going outside the lines. It's a tough hurdle to grasp when you spend years trying to gain better brush control by painting in the lines, but order you operations with the air brush dark to to light and don't be afraid to jump back and forth between stages, and you really should worry less about over spray. Over spray is usually a good thing by the end as it adds additional layers and depth to the model. Nobody recognizes over spray through washes and highlights. Also switch to oil washes and use rattle can varnish for save points.
I’m starting to really like you man. Taking jabs at ourselves is sometimes the best way to get a laugh and keep moving forward. We are all a little crazy after all. Great work, you got my sub.
You know whats funny and kind of brave of you? I have seen these kinds of videos before but never have I seen someone attempt it, fail, and show that journey. Just the insight into your hard work condensed down into something we can view casually is an achievement on its own. So good job Scotty boy, you're killin it up there amongst the clouds at the tippy top of the mountain
Big props and thanks for posting what you percieved as a failure or incomplete result. It's incredibly refreshing. We spend so much time joking about the struggle of painting but it's not something I see many people talk and being transparent about on RUclips.
Really nice to see someone of your skill level showing their limitation so that it shows that beginners, like myself, not to die in a ditch when it feels like it is taking ages or when we run up against bumps in the road. Love the videos where you show how you handle mistakes and slip up as I find that this the most frustrating part; feeling like I should be immediately better after every brush stroke.
Actually I think it was a pretty good effort Scott, considering you tried to paint this to a high standard and even put time into thinking and writing down your process. At the same time, I'd like to make a suggestion for a followup video that may be a bit more in the spirit of real life armypainters; Project: 2400p Infantery-horde, non elite, fantasy army (Empire, Skaven, O&G, Vamps or such...) for 8th ed pre-end times warhammer, so max 25% lords. Prep: No, we don't want to see any moldlines and all gaps get stuffed with greenstuff. Paintlevel: Every part of the model painted with at least base, shade and highligt. All belts, pouches, boots, beards, jewelry and eyes painted with other colors than the uniform/clothes/armor. All units have banners and these are painted with individual unit markings. Consistency: This is an army, not a rag-tag band of mercenary fighters. That means there are uniforms with a common theme throughout all the units. It doesn't have to be identical, but there should at least be a common theme. Bases: Earth, rocks and flock or static grass (flowers are optional). Painted, that means No shortcuts by just dropping natural materials on there. Movement trays: Oh yes, with the edges done in the same style as the bases. Difficulty level increase: Any time you sit down and actually paint, you have to do this as if you had a normal dayjob. That means you keep doing your 8 hours a day with the youtube- and podcast-stuff and only then may you spend time on this project. Further difficulty increase: Not many people have a setup like yours with a dedicated hobby space. All painting must therefore be done at the kitchen table with only a portable lightsource, and if you ever want to use an airbrush you may only do so while your wife is screaming at you to keep the noise down and hitting you with a pillow in the head every 2 minutes. Hard. There is no love while airbrushing. Difficulty level reached: Now, you didn't think you would get to work in peace, did you? To simulate real-life conditions for the average armypainter, every other time you sit down to work on this project, 2,2 small children around the age of 3-6 will be having some sort of meal at the same table you are sitting at. I dont need to give further instructions regarding this. They know what to do... And now for the kicker: Timeframe: Not as such. All you have to do is to finish the army and play 1 game with it before you die from old age. That's it. Good luck, have fun and remeber to post updates!
It made me happy seeing that 6th edition vampire counts book. Sadly i lost mine but i still got most of the other army books from 6th-8th edition of Warhammer fantasy.
Its impressive what you got done in such short time and I think its probably for the better that you didnt succeed, after all this epic army will get the time attention to detail it deserves. I get that such challenges are a good motivator to chip away at the pile of shame but hey you got the like a third/half of the painting done and personally I find that even more motivating to finish up than a blank canvas aka fully unpainted model. Keep up the good work, cant wait for the next video!
You'll get it eventually there scott. In my experience even when painting for a tabletop standard working in sub assemblies is useful. It can really help avoid the rubbing pain off of features when working with larger scale figures and help speed up the process.
Thank you for sharing your failures too. Often, at least for me, fear of failure can get in the way of doing the thing when I see all these awesome projects on YT. It’s nice to see someone I admire as a skilled painter can struggle too, but has the courage to share that with us. Thank you sir!
I still have the same Army Book lying around at home. I loved the art. RIP pseudo bretonnian Blood Dragon armies riding in Lance formation and othet alternative army lists.
Not gonna lie, but the way the white on top of the red ghosts at 5:04 looked siiiiick. Idk if it was just the angle or the camera or what but the look reminded me of the ghosts from Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia .
I think you are getting closer to being able to speed paint an army. If anything I would have gotten the basic scheme down and then went back to do weathering and all of that fun stuff but you are a lot better painter than me so I guess your methods do work. Keep up the good work dude.
You guys are really great, it's so funny. I like the way you do your videos together but also make them from each of your point of view. Such great painting 👌😍 thank you for your vids keeping me so interested in the hobby.
Thanks for anothe4 entertaining video. My view is that contrast paints (which I used to hate) would do the job quite well. White base coat then snakebite for leather, the red for armour etc. And vallejo air metallic might help. Maybe a simple wash after. Keep up the great videos. Especially your epic basing videos
That intro was pure gold 😂 Fair play to Scott- you tried valiantly, sir. I still can't seem to finish models in less than three weeks so I can't judge lol
It is partially painted... NOW FINISH THEM!!! Also as a tip, contrast paints can make things go super fast. Paint colors from light to darker and end with black or dark brown and even over painting is not an issue. Highlights with a drybrush or quick brushwork using the model texture remives the tedious part and boom, painted model. Great work and humility... now finish that army!
Maybe you didnt finish the army, but getting so far in so few hours and seeing colour on those minis has to be a major motivation booster though and give you a sense of accomplishment. And also makes future projects seem a little less intimidating. At least now you have a save point once you got the boss to half health. XD
Great video! I think the main improvement to your approach would be to start with answering "what can I finnish in this time?" instead of "how do i want it to look?". Hope we´ll see the army finished at some point!
My wife and I sat down to watch this last. She loves Vampires too, so has been very interested in this army. Me also. Hope you manage to finish it, my friend.
Hey dude, I'd really like to see you push through to at least one fully painted army, and I love watching the process. Why stop? Throw up a Part 2 or Part 3 over the next few months where you try to push through to the end.
I really appreciate your drive to show all your failures as a content creator. As someone new to the hobby, so much of what I find online is success stories. Which is helpful, but not at all what my journey looks like. I'm sure there's probably some pressure to just hide your mistakes (I mean you could have just kept working over a couple days and lied and said you did it in two) so I really want to voice how much you inspire me.
I really liked the colour-scheme approach (painting likewise colours at the same time) you displayed, and will probably use it when I paint my start collecting 1ksons!
Very funny. You two are great playing off each other. I like the keyword idea for planning out the process. I have to use that next time I paint a larger set of minis from the same faction.
I think the biggest thing that would have helped you is doing more with your airbrush, and masking. Black hair? Airbrush it? Little piece of cloth? Airbrush it. A little bit of over spray from those details is easy to clean up and it saves you times. Masking your dragon might have then some time, but it’s less time to squish some silly putty in the details than brush paint it and you can airbrush without fear. Also you get the super satisfying feeling of peeling it off and seeing your pretty paint job!
I thought after the other Blood Knight marathon session, this video was going to be like revenge for that failure. Plot twist: it was not lol. Everything still looks great and I cant wait to see these guys finished!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Ok I had to stop the video because that time management joke was too good for me to keep going while laughing. You aced that, both of you!
As someone who loves painting larger models, after you've got the basecoat down, hit it with a quick once over of matte varnish from your airbrush! Maybe go heavy spots that you think you'll want to hold it so they're extra protected.
Im excited for the next 2 day challenge where Scott finishes painting a single banner 👏 In all seriousness, fun video and great scheme. I cant wait to employee the technique for reds here.
Sorry you couldn't finish your army in time :( Great effort and it is coming along just a couple more challenges and you may have an army yet :D Just bought a couple tshirts also. :) I do dungeons and dragons printing and painting, I don't do warhammer or any thing like it but I love your channel, podcast and now Jon's as well. Keep up the great work :) and thank you for entertaining the masses.
My god that screen at 1:48 , man you need to clean that. For a moment I thought it was my screen that dirty! Awesome job on the video and the army, as always!!
I've been trying pretty successfully to let go of trying to be perfect every step of the way so I can move on with my life (read: minis) quicker. Happy to see the resident Tryhard(tm) youtuber moving towards that direction as well. It's not like you're running out of minis either way, so just enjoy the process.
An alternative could have been to just do all the airbrush steps over everything, n maybe the chipping too and then pick you favourite unit or two and finish those in the time you have left so everything is ‘painted’ in the right colours and your centrepiece draws the eye. But still damn good work, also these models look pretty dope even at this stage.
To really upset yourself you should challenge Midwinter Minis to paint the exact same army and see how long it takes him! That armour is super crisp though lad
Why are you not using the Vallejo Metal Color silvers? From all the ones I tried so far, those looked the best and have good coverage. Sure Leadbelcher is pretty good, but have you tried those?
Wow, that's not bad for that time limit, looks like you sacrificed time for ensuring quality, which is good! - I'm a trash painter so I would undercoat with a red primer or bone, stick with 3-4 colors max and drown it in wash, and it would still take me 3 weeks lol
Never back down from a challenge?!?! I CHALLENGE YOU - to have an awesome day my dude! Love your vids and would love to see you guys play some Warhammer!~

Hey! Have you been keeping up with your charity army volunteer work?! Post it on instagram using the hashtag #miniac2020charity
Despite Dr Pepper being his pop of choice, Scott is a responsible adult and switches to Coca Cola when drinking breakfast soda.
Dr. Pepper is life
A man of culture
Nothing starts the day like a nice, cold refreshing breakfast Coke!
I was actually most disappointed that he called it soda..... Minnesotans don't drink soda.....
we all KNOW, the dr is the best option, jeremy... come on now.
At Play On Tabletop we make entertainment a priority and I must say... Both you and Jon are probably the two most entertaining RUclipsrs in the mini-painting world. Thank you so much for the informative and fun videos. The hard work you put into them is seen and appreciated.
Maniac: You can paint a whole army in two days!

I need this sort of reality from my youtubers
Maniac instead of Miniac is pretty accurate. lol

I agree, GW metallics coverage is trash. Vallejo Model Air Silver and Gunmetal will cover anything in one pass.
@@enveritas4948 It's different paint. Difference between Vallejo Metal Color and Model Air is huge. Shame that Metal Color gold is so ugly.
@@MrKuncol It really is, but if you mix it with copper and silver you can get quite a few very nice gold tones.

Best Legion, bruh. Good choice, been waiting for you to go down this path for about 3 years
Scott your vids are getting real tight! The quality keeps improving, I'm loving it.
A big fan of your video's, finally subscribed! Motivated me to start painting my nid army and im happy to say that im seeing improvements :)
So funny when Scott and Jon do “collab” videos!! Loved it, comparing styles and tricks, you should do more of these!!
Nothing like watching Scott try such unrealistic projects to keep me motivated

I'd like to see this army fully painted one day... I have to make my own blood army and I ran out of ideas on how to do it.
P. S. Good job!
So you guys are going to record the game too right!?!?!?! Always a great time, good tips and entertaining ...good luck on the game!!
You fool!
You should have contacted Midwinter Minis seeing as how he painted an entire army in the previous challenge
well jon did an amazing job with his army, and finished it to boot!
I'd love to see a short series painting up all these dudes in a couple batch sessions!!
As someone who loves painting larger models, after you've got the basecoat down, hit it with a quick once over of matte varnish from your airbrush! Maybe go heavy spots that you think you'll want to hold it so they're extra protected.
Im excited for the next 2 day challenge where Scott finishes painting a single banner 👏
In all seriousness, fun video and great scheme. I cant wait to employee the technique for reds here.

Can't wait for PAINTING A TYRAIND HIVE FLEET IN 1 DAY!
Scott: Proceeds to finish one model that looks painstakingly gorgeous. But the rest of his army has a color or two on each model.

Is that a combo moisture-tap/reg you have right below the quick connect on your airbrush?
