Welcome back, friends! Today we undertake a colossal step in the garage build - Acid staining the concrete floor! We are not sponsored by any brands shown - these were personal choices we made when shopping for products.
I'll show you the steps I took to prep and stain this floor walnut brown. This garage is going to be a rustic, stone & iron theme, so shiny/perfect finishes are not the goal for any part of this build.
Acid staining provides an imperfect, natural stone look for concrete that I absolutely love. You'll also get to see some amateur mistakes made during this process that we address before this is done...

can this be done indoors, for a master bedroom?

That's entirely possible. Long after the project was done, I found a video from a professional who pre-sprayed the floor with water from the pump sprayer. I feel like it was the right thing to do, but all previous research did not suggest it was a step, so I didn't.
That said, the stain all turned out great anyway. I'm honestly more annoyed with the acrylic sealer than anything - it has not held up well. I wonder if I would have liked clear epoxy more. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Definitely, I will apply lighter first, that way I can re--spray if needed.
How many square feet does a gallon of acid stain cover up
"Chemical stains also need to penetrate into the concrete surface to react with the lime in the concrete. ... Schmidt also warns against acid etching of floors before staining." Google quote; wonder if your stain turned out darker since you etched and had the pours opened up and had different reactions with the lime?
How can you do this when the room is already built like a living room since not able to use a pressure washer to rinse?
I have a question. Does this cover the cracks that are on the concrete? There was a crack where you had your items set up in the beginning of the video. Interested in the close up results
Those were some surface cracks, also called crazing cracks. That has nothing to do with finish process or integrity. In New Mexico, we live in one of the driest places on the planet.
Professionals use a trick with diesel to keep fresh concrete from drying out too fast, but we learned of that too late. You can make up a slurry to fill cosmetic cracks like that, then finish as you see fit. I personally wanted my garage to look rustic, barn style, and like it was built on a slab of stone. I don't mind the imperfections one bit.

have done these beautiful artistic type floors for years. we liked coming back over slightly with some black rendered in on top of the brown for a tortoise look. 'spider' cracks and 'mother concrete nature' will always happen. we always tell the customer up front and to look at it as 'character'. ...or do the boring and tile it!

Can the acid be rolled on or brushed on? I have a situation where a sprayer will be bad idea.
After doing this myself several times across this floor with multiple dilutions and colors, et cetera; I feel acid stain can be applied with any tool. A quick google check shows several companies saying you can roll or brush it on for corners and smaller spots.
If you're worried about pattern/even application; don't worry about it. As long as you don't let a brush/roller stroke dry, the acid will all burn in and even out. The concrete lime mix affects the pattern more than application method. So yes, you could definitely roller and brush stain on to reduce mess. Just be quick about getting full coverage and not letting line strokes and drops dry in place. Biggest advice I learned - Don't overthink it! The color will completely change when sealed with your topcoat.

@@CoyoteCrossingSanctuary Do you mean why I chose Acid Stain over water-based stain? That's very simple - Acid stain chemically reacts with a decent top layer of the concrete to fundamentally change its color. The only way to lose that color is if it's outdoors getting sun-bleached, or the concrete gets chipped away to unstained lower levels. Water-based stain is pretty much just watery paint that forms a layer on top of the concrete. Water-based stain/paint are cheap and easy, but will eventually flake and peel, creating a huge mess. Acid stain is actually kind of fun. Don't stress, don't panic. Let it do its thing, enjoy the imperfections, and put a nice topcoat down to give you years of good color. Thanks for the compliments!

Do you need to seal? I want to put this onto my new fountain and I don't want it to peel after a few months.
Acid stain is not a coating that can peel - it chemically reacts to the lime and mineral in concrete to permanently alter its color.
It will never peel off. That said - it can sun bleach and fade depending on color. A coating does protect it from surface damage, and add sheen.

@@chiplarkin4069 There are many kinds. This was acrylic coating - it does not peel. It hardens into a composite, glassy seal that could be chipped or fade with enough punishment.
Epoxy sealant is another options. It's harder, similar strength, totally different application. When done perfectly, epoxy is very strong and can last for 10+ years.
When applied less than perfectly, epoxy will flake with heavy traffic.
I went with acrylic because it's much easier to just wash and reapply a new layer of coating regularly. Epoxy requires an entire grind down to concrete and fresh reapplication.
Never use any acid-based cleaner before acid staining. It greatly lessens the acid stain's effect.
Nice but darker , you will have all the dust foot prints , it what happens with my cherry wood floor

Are you daft? That man has body parts replaced with metal, lives in chronic pain, and still built the entire garage with me. This was a project I could actually do on my own and he was curious about the process because he's a master craftsman; he's allowed to spectate all he wants.
