Tree Camping - CAMPING OVER 100 FEET UP!!! (4K)

  • Well, I finally reached my 2017 goal of camping in my hammock after hanging it up over the 100-foot mark!!! I found the tree at a local park, on the second day of a three-day trip with some friends from school.
    I just got the GoPro Hero6, so the videoing is a little spotty at times. Particularly around the 5:50-10:32 point. GoPro said they fixed this framerate glitching issue with their last update, so hopefully it won't be an issue in the future. Other than that framerate glitch and my own bumps and wobbles, I think the footage looks amazing!
    Here are the times for what you may want to skip to:
    00:00-00:40 - getting to camp
    00:40-5:20 - setting up in first tree
    5:20-5:50 - dinner/goofing off
    5:50-10:32 - taking down camp
    10:32-11:52 - packing + hike to next site
    11:52-14:42 - getting into the second tree
    14:42-18:08 - how I set up my hammock
    18:08-19:02 - getting down for dinner/overnight
    19:02-19:58 - taking down camp
    19:58-20:44 - hike back to car
    20:44-21:30 - pictures
    I hope you enjoyed the footage, and that you were able to stand the horrible accents and goofing off. And, of course, thanks for watching.

    Dude! You're seriously awesome! This is great stuff! Have you ever thought of creating a video about what kind of gear you use including some info on different rope types.. I've read that tree climbing is sort of different from rock climbing in some sense, especially in terms of which harness to use and also types of rope. I would really love to get into tree camping as I am already an avid hammock camper and always had the wish of getting up higher for a nicer view. I would be really interested in some more info to get a newb started! Keep up the awesome vids! Watched 'em all! Love 'em all! Keep it coming!

    Hello, nice video. I think you have a lot of talent as a climber - arborists have just recently started using single rope techniques to climb trees and I really like your pulley ascent method. You are very calm in the tree as well.
    As someone working as an arborist (hopefully certified soon) I would never climb without a helmet, hand saw, and spare items (carabiners, friction cord, throwbag, redirect). I would also triple check that your rope attachment device is rated for the long descents you are doing here - lots of friction. I second the advice below about cross loading carabiners (and inspecting/replacing them afterwards when it does happen and using a dynamic tie-in point in case your hammock fails (I've hooked my ENO on the gate and bent a carabiner). You could simulate a fall/failure at ground level to see how your harness feels and how far you would be willing to drop into it (as little as possible). Also be careful in tip-tops of trees - you are loading the branches opposite of their normal tension/compression against their weight, and dead wood can be tricky to identify in winter. Happy camping!

    • @sireliot2149
      @sireliot2149 5 лет назад +3

      Actually your harness (rock climbing?) might not be a good one to drop into at all (no hip harness really is, and dorsal attachment/fall arrest harnesses are not something you can recover from a fall by yourself in - even if you have a suspension relief option). For rec climbing/camping a saddle with a seat (looks kind of like a swingset board) would probably be really comfortable.

I figured insomnia and overwork did not go well with tree work and I changed jobs, but I'm planning to buy gear and get back into it.The best thing is probably to find a mentor. Trees with more branches all the way up the trunk are less intimidating. Joe Bisping and Reg Coates make good videos, but Tree Camper's techniques are more similar to caving or rock climbing, but they methods are blending. Good luck.

    • @TheTreeCamper
      @TheTreeCamper  6 лет назад +1

      jan Rieß I usually detach it, yes. I’ve tried every combination I can think of, and taking everything off of the rope except for the grigri makes it easiest to move around and descend. I got a good angle on a long, quick descent, but the GoPro frame glitch was too bad to salvage the footage. I was miffed.

    • @janrie7330
      @janrie7330 6 лет назад

      I don't even notice that the pulley is there while descending since I usually have my brake hand 1" above the pulley, you just have to clip it into the right gear loop. I once got a branch snagged in the pulley, but the rest of the time it works perfectly. You're lucky you only have that glitch sometimes- my Camera freezes almost every time I try to record, I should not have bought a chinese Gopro knockoff...

    Some tricks I use to spot deadwood in the winter is to look at how to branches move in the wind. Live limbs will have more give and flow in the wind than dead limbs. Just try shaking a live limb and dead limb and you'll see what I mean. On White Oaks, a tell tale sign is the absence of buds at the branch tips. They'll look like little rotten brittle fingers instead of having fine little buds on it. Not to add any confusion, but just because it has buds on it, doesn't mean it's alive lol.

      TheTreeCamper I’ve never used it but basically it’s a mechanical Prussik that you can use for ascending, defending, and maneuvering in the trees. But if your system works then why change it! ¡Have fun!

    I think it's a bit sketchy what you're doing with the carabiner when pulling up your rope. How do you make sure it doesn't get side-loaded? I'd just pull the rope up with the end of the rope sticked through the loop of the butterfly knot :)

    Do you have any recommendations? I’m 87 kg, 191 lbs, is 9.8 mm strong enough? And perhaps you could put together a video of the minimum gear you use for climbing?

    • @TheTreeCamper

      J Sab Basic gear list:
      Harness (I use a Black Diamond Momentum and a Black Diamond Couloir, Logan uses a Petzl Sama, but any harness will work.) - www.rei.com/product/126508/black-diamond-momentum-harness-mens
      GriGri - www.rei.com/product/809263/petzl-grigri-2-belay-device
      Hand ascender (I prefer the Petzl Basic) - www.rei.com/product/850351/petzl-basic-multipurpose-compact-ascender?CAWELAID=120217890000859772&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=15877502440&CATCI=aud-87986356584:pla-283284021522&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C404_33408%7C8503510001%7Cnone%7C00e425da-298b-41b5-87da-292bb57c7d12%7Caud-87986356584:pla-283284021522&lsft=cm_mmc:PLA_Google_LIA%7C404_33408%7C8503510001%7Cnone%7C00e425da-298b-41b5-87da-292bb57c7d12%7Caud-87986356584:pla-283284021522&gclid=CjwKCAiAjanRBRByEiwAKGyjZQ-FeuQQWgNfzVD26_BARan6JHex3c1N5A0uKtSkMqqBlM7J_amfhBoCEM4QAvD_BwE
      Rope (I use Sterling HTP 9mm static line, which you can buy by the foot on treestuff.com. I suggest 60-100 ft if you don’t plan on doing super high climbs, and would like to be able to back/bike-pack easily with it. Otherwise, 150-200 ft are good deals per-ft) - www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=142&item=1784
      Foot loop (I use a PAS system and a webbing loop as a combined backup safety and foot loop system, but you can get away with just a simple loop of webbing if you are on a stricter budget.) - www.rei.com/product/825820/metolius-pas-22-personal-anchor-system
      www.rei.com/product/474003/bluewater-titanspectra-runner-916
      Biners - 2 locking (one for the grigri, one for the handle ascender and footloop. The latter is optional, but it makes it a lot easier to clip to your harness when you’re taking your system off for advancing your line. Getting a third would enable you to attach your rope and take it off more easily for advancing your main climb line) Black Diamond or whatever you like.
      Lanyard (you can use your footloop as your lanyard, assuming it’s climbing spec material, but I use 15 ft of 8 mm accessory cord. I’d suggest just using 15 ft of your climb line. Just buy it separately.
      Hope this helps!

      Start small. You could try rappelling to start, climbing trees with lanyards, rock climbing... I'm not afraid of heights, but I get some butterflies each time I'm high up. You have to respect gravity... I have a video coming out in a few days about simple rappelling with simple gear, if you want some pointers about starting. Good luck.
