RIP Sam Simon
Sam Simon was very unique from the other producers at the time. He was basically the show's level of humor. Whenever someone was having trouble with creating a line, Sam would be the one to recommend something even better and special. He also was the smartest comedy writer of his generation. He brought a level of honesty to the characters.
That’s why he was also the Creative Supervisor of the show
Agree I mainly love Sam Simon for his work on Taxi and Simpsons. Mainly for his level of humour, tone and writing style.
And don’t forget the writers like vitti and Swartzlander that were so good at writing dialogue, but Conan was so good at acting scenes out the whole cape fear episode was him acting out each scene such as the Sideshow Bob episode Cape Fear with the interrogation in the court room was all acted out by Conan. He never got enough credit for the energy he brought to the writing room. That’s why the movie kind of sucked.
Because Conan didn’t wanna do it.

Sam Simon sketched some of the first Simpson's characters - "Mr. Burns, for example", and was involved in making the show intelligent, not just slapstick. Sam set the stage for this entire franchise.
Fun fact: following Sam Simon's death, he was always credited by his real name in the Treehouse of Horror episodes 26-present
Thomas Hester He chose the writing staff, oversaw most of the production in the early years(showrunner), established the show's humour, pacing, style etc. Essentially, Matt Created the characters, wrote the early shorts, and consulted on the show. Sam Simon sort of "created" the show as we know it, and Jim Brooks made sure that the show got on the air, and wasn't interfered with. That's over-simplifying it, but gives you an idea.

Sadly, Groening had fallouts with both Simon and Brooks. Simon left due to creative differences and Brooks became less involved after a dispute with Groening over the episode "A Star Is Burns".
Can kinda sense the tension between Sam Simon and Matt Groening in this video. They apparently had fights about credit for the show in the era of this interview. I'm probably looking at this too much, but Jim Brooks sits between the two, and Simon doesn't blink at Groening's merch jokes. And the interviewer didn't direct a question at Sam, who had a lot to do with the show but didn't get the publicity.

Apparently Matt Groening was upset with Sam Simon because he said that we’re 13 episodes and out, which Matt interpreted as him not believing in the show. He thought that if the show was a failure then his career would be over but Sam would continue to have a career in Hollywood. Sam was upset with Matt because he thought that Matt was taking too much credit for the show and he thought that he deserved the credit for the show.

On top of it, every joke from the show's first 3 years had to be cleared by him. It set the stage for both silly jokes and those being environmentally conscious. Sam made the Simpson's be both funny and take a temperature of our times as people in the U.S.
