Welcome to the Letterman RUclips Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era. Развлечения
Little did Dave know that after this segment Matt spent about a half hour giving his phone number out to all the Late Night writers.
Doh!
Had no idea he was ever on the show! Thanks for this!
I hear it was uploaded a few years ago on another channel.
Did you know he was friends with Jeff Epstein and went to Lolita Island?
This is great I don't recall ever seeing another interview with him this early in the show's run
Simpson's pilot episode did not air yet when this was taped. (Only shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show).
holding my breath to make sure Matt Groening didn't just pass away.
I checked a news website, then google news before watching.
@@tvtomsalways a safe call with this channel
@horace sheffield because this channel posts videos of stars Dave interviewed in the past when they have passed away.
@@horacesheffield7367 Learning from history isn't dark, it's just prudence. This channel is half obit, half Staff Favorites 🤣
@horace sheffield This channel is frequently posting clips when news breaks about a celeb passing.
Groening's stories sound like they could fit in a Simpson episode
His Dad Homer Groenig, lived in Saskatchewan Canada. His mom's maiden name is Margaret Wiggam his little sisters name is Lisa
In Portland near his high school there's a NW Flanders Street. A little further North, (they're in alphabetical order) there's a NW Lovejoy Street.
@@last808 His secretary's name was Lincoln and her secretary's name was Kennedy
His doctor’s name was Apu.
His childhood best friends neighbours aunty had a milkman who once had a dog called Santa
He could've had the boy character be Matt, named after himself, but in the end, good thing he went with Bart at the end.
Matt predicted this video would be posted today in an episode from 2004.
Wonder if that Groening guy ever amounted to anything?
Meh. He tried a run of animated shorts with some yellow family on the Tracey Ullman Show back then, but I don't think that became a thing aside from that one christmas special.
Did you know he was friends with Jeff Epstein and went to Lolita Island? He accomplished so much!
He is the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama..
@@stephanieg9628 WOOSH!
@@stephanieg9628 And a friend of Jeffrey Epstein
A series? wow!
"oh it will be a series then?"
good call Dave. I wonder if Dave remembers THAT gaff.
I get what you're saying about how long the show has been running, but it wasn't really a gaff at the time, the Christmas special was the first episode that aired.
I'll bet that Dave knows how to spell gaffe.
Dave was sleepwalking his way through this entire interview, constantly sighing while Matt was talking and couldn't wait to shake his hand while he was mid story just to end the segment, he had no interest in the cartoon and yet for the next five years at least it would be an unavoidable part of the early 90s zeitgeist and he'd know who Matt was then.
It was fun Watching Tracy Ulman with my grandmother. That's how Simpsons started, you Millennials 🤪
Milennials know that. I think you mean gen z?
But do Millennials know Tracy Ullman?
I remember watching this segment with a ton of excitement, being a huge fan of both Life in Hell and Letterman. Groening's only semi-mainstream exposure at this point was the Simpsons shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show, so seeing a guy who was basically a fringe underground cartoonist on Late Night felt like a big deal. Groening was more the kind of guest that they'd booked in the first couple of seasons. I remember Dave being much more testy about the Romper Room discussion than this clip reveals. My impression might be partly due to Matt's subsequent appearance on the show -- after the Simpsons was a bonafide phenomenon -- when Dave apologized for this previous interaction, chalking it up to the fact that he really didn't know or understand who Groening was.
What about Futurama and Disenchantment?
@@TheRealFry2024What about them?
@@toddserotiuk9968 did you like them?
I enjoyed Futurama for a while. Disenchantment didn't do much for me.
There's an old drawing that was etched into wet cement by Matt Groening on the sidewalk in front of Lincoln High School in Portland. If I recall correctly, it's on the Northwest corner.
Gone...😢
@@KLEARSKITHEKREEPER wow, did they redevelop the corner? I hope someone chopped it out first.
I think this guy's gonna go places!
Still Alive
Graining? I always thought it was Growning.
Nope.
Haha yes I've never understood that either i don't see any grain pronunciation in the name
He looks like a Time Traveler
What an incredible artifact from a world before The Simpson’s had made as wide a cultural impact. Conan hadn’t even been hired on SNL by this time, let alone The Simpsons!
Without it, there wouldn't be any Futurama or Disenchantment!
Matt Groening created a great show in The Simpsons, and a great comic book in Life In Hell. I wish him a very long life!
Das Spiegelbild von andjelkovic Dennis
He went on to create a fairly unknown and unsuccessful show called Conk Nuggets.
RIP 😢❤❤❤
Great fun...
Dave!
Stump town USA 🇺🇸 ♥
The creator of Futurama!
He looks so different a lot more hair than now.
I thought he was going to talk aboeut Life in Hell and The Simpsons.
Feel like this kid has potential
Carson is the greatest of all time, and Letterman is the second greatest of all time, and Conan is a distant third, and Norm MacDonald would’ve been the second or third greatest late night host had he lived long enough
I’m making Simpson episode called Dead Bart
I always thought that Matt was a writer for Dave’s show.
RIP sweet prince

wow, he's the spitting image of a young Justin Roiland
The Simpsons? meh that show will never make it....
Probably more an idea for shelbyville...
What about Futurama and Disenchantment?
Cue the lame jokes about Groening dead or commenting on the future prospects of The Simpsons as if it's 1989.
Shet mats not funny as all whay
Oh, it'll be a series then? Has to be the worst plug ever.
A decent teen who grew up to be friends with Jeff Epstein and flew the Lolita Express to Little St. James Island.
What a sad life you must have.
