I love the ending where he changes the subject. Classic artist behavior. You have an idea that you obsess about and think is brilliant and all ambitious about it but then all a sudden one day you stop being ambitious about it. Then people bring it up and you wish you never even shared that idea to begin with. But the idea and ambition come back every so often
Story of my life lol
"you think you're akbar, but you're really jeff"
He seems like the coolest guy
"Unfortunately, The Simpsons continues on and on" Matt Groening
He is correct on that and does have a point
@@stephenmarray6553 yeah
He's right. Zombie Simpsons just keeps on existing...😣
"I had no choice." Said by all the great artists... Thanx, Matt! 👍
This is a great documentary on Matt Groening, one of the greatest cartooning genuises of our time. I used to watch The Simpsons and Futurama as a kid and I enjoy how this talks about his origin and where he got his ideas and influences to create his stuff.
If Matt were to go forward with an animated Life in Hell, I think it would work best as a series of internet shorts. He'd basically be working with a format that's, at its core, animated comic strips, and I think he'd be all for that.

1:35 I wish I can draw characters as fast and consistent as he does. I know it’s all line work but that is a skill I desperately want
If you draw a character so much, then yeah you can do it.
Matt Groening is 1 of my heroes in drawing, cartoons and comics.
I love drawing, he's a good inspiration.
What an inspiring man! Thank you Matt Groening for making my childhood
All documentaries of The Simpsons should be released on DVD.
Man, I love hearing from this guy. Matt Groening was my hero as a kid. I had the Life in Hell books and The Simpsons was my favorite show when I was in grade school. I always wanted to be a cartoonist and I have always looked up to him. Hearing him talk about his life and inspirations makes me feel like I could do something too.
5:08 disney prides itself in its nauseating bouncingness!
I loved the Flintstones when I was a kid in the early 60's, but like he said they never got any where that had any edge. I read his " Life in hell" strip when I was in the Army around 84' 85' and no one ( I knew) had ever heard of him then. When "The Simpson's" came out I was really happy because I didn't know of any other stuff he had done except for life in hell and I was really impressed to see him on Tracy Ullman. I was surprised that they got picked up by a major network but Fox was just a little start up then and the Simpson's gave them the rating's they needed, along with "Married with Children" to take off. Still a fan even after the show jumped a while back.
he should make a show for life in hell. I'd definitely watch it.
You do understand the entire reason he created the Simpsons was because he did not want to give up sole ownership of Life in Hell. He created the characters and drawings on the spot so that this show would be his own.
+Karl Hiramanek so?
+Fat Frog So creating a show would mean he would have to relinquish the rights to Life in Hell.
Yeah but Life in Hell ended a few years ago. And he created the "ACME Features Hut" his own self publisher and so technically he can still own the characters since it's official.
he sounds ( and looks :-) ) like a really awesome guy
what a genius! I'm so amazed. I have never seen a Matt Groening interview before
Yeah, I feel the same way. Though, I'd like to think that there's a bit of pressure on him to play himself up a bit. It's noted that fox likes to give the "creative genius living out of his car/underdog" impression. The better he looks, the more impressive rise-to-fame story the show has.
What a fascinating man. :D
Personal (please no trolling):
0 min. inspiration
3 min... overcoming creative problems
4 min.. 250 newspapers... build up
5:45 min... creative problem solving
7 min... being great without the need to be great
8:30... creative inspiration
Really excellent to watch these clips! Love the origins of Akbar and Jeff.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
The Simpsons goes to show you how good something could be through collaboration and team work.
2:29 Basically he reinvented the characters as Vip and Vap from Disenchantment.
This made me smile :)
I wonder if Brendan Small saw this and stole Matt's idea for Metalocalypse.
God I miss that show
Wow so awesome
great soundtrack for this documentary
It's phenomenal. Do you know what the track @0:42 is?
This was cool to watch
GENIUS!!!

I love Matt Groening ! Already in thirteen years and I would like to read Matt's resume. even in the ninth grade in elementary school I began to scribble in a workbook that I look like Matt. I am from Slovakia and there was life in hell comics can not get what a shame ... (so I downloaded over 250 comics from google :D)
what are you up to now, nine years later? :)
nice! thanks arizona for the vid!!!
Based on what the simpsons show us on their show about what’s going to happen in the future, Matt drawing people with rabbit ears and his “twin” characters
(as above so below) duality he’s a huge Freemason. These people are sick and wicked
i'd looove to see that rock n roll show
the question in the cartoon of the amputated in the 4th clip at 0:44 was in an episode of the simpsons
Whats the tune at 0:48
i was introduced to Matt's work with his strip "Life in Hell". Was. and am, a great fan of Binky, Sheba, Bongo, Jeff, and Akbar. Then I saw Tracy Ulman's show and watched the filler material. It looked a lot like Binky and the gang.
Whats the name of the song at 2:36?
Does anyone know the song at the beginning of this clip?
Matt Groening: if i do a 3rd cartoon, God when will I sleep
20 years later the simpsons is still going, futurama got a reboot on Hulu, and he has a 3rd show disenchantment
Life in hell animated....sign me up
8:58 Well at least you got to talk to him at all. Hopefully he doesn't retire before getting another idea out there.
whats the music at 43 sec.?
What episode is when Marge has to go to a 12 mile gas station?
I love that episode
I hope Seth doesn't rip that off too. Bastard doesn't know when to stop!
he's going to make a fantasy show, that'll be interesting
Matt Groening crate great picture!!
Rocky & Bullwinkle FTW!!!

I liked Life In Hell more for that myself.
@arizonabay I made a msitake, its actually elevation.
How can you draw like that so quickly. Blows my mind.
practice.
and raw talent.
Nope, just practice.
practice without raw talent is like trying to fly with no wings.
No, saying that you can only be good at something if you have this so called mythical "talent" is like giving up before even starting to learn something. It's like a first grader saying "well, I learned a letter and then tried reading and it didn't work, guess I just have no talent for it" and giving up and we all know that that that is not a good approach to anything, you can't expect to just pick up a pencil and become Da Vinci, just like you can't just expect to learn the letter A and then read "War and Peace".
Sure, there might be a few things that make it more difficult to learn drawing, things like having trouble imagining things in 3D space, essential tremor or even a lack of hand or arms, but even that is not a hindrance if you really really want to learn.
But most of the time I see someone say "oh, you can't do x if you don't have talent" they are just normal people, they have no huge disadvantages or such and I expect most could go far in that field if they wanted to but you never even start trying.
Is it really enough to just live some live in a 9-5 job, maybe get married, have kids that'll go through the same boring old hell and never try new things because you cling to this concept of instantly mastering stuff if you just have the talent?
Honestly: who or what gave you that idea?
How do you know the future
god hes a gangsta cartoonist!
@arizonabay That's too bad. Being the busy man that he is, his plans are bound to change at the drop of a hat.
This guy was a genius. I always want to recreate what he's done. But its impossible, and I wont bother to attempt to.
Matt's left handed
D'oh!
@jcoch1r that was nearly happenin in 1987, but in the last moment Matt created simpsons
Mental note, steal his idea
The reason that he flip-flopped on the subject is because Flash Animation House "TITMOUSE" beat him to it with their creation....."METALOCALYPSE."
So since they already make fun of Rock Music....Groening had his Thunder stolen. You never know though, he may come out with it anyways.
A shame to hear that Simpsons' co-creator Sam Simon has cancer. Hopefully, it won't affect the show when he dies cause I hear the poor guy has terminal cancer. : (
Simon hasn't been with the show since 93 I believe. They just keep his name in the credits.
"This is disheartening. Matt has something going for him, his sincerity. Then he goes and continuously takes credit for The Simpson's yellow skin. This has been debunked. He has only recently given credit publicly to the person who made this decision, a woman at the studio that animated the Tracey Ulman shorts back in the 1980's. "
I remember that. Her name is Gyorgyi Peluce, who worked as a color stylist for Klasky-Csupo. I think Matt mentioned her on the very first Simpsons Season One DVD set for one of the episode commentaries (might be 'Moaning Lisa").
www.imdb.com/name/nm1386798/
I see she worked on "Hugo the Hippo", that movie has very Simpson-esque visual motifs that rivaled what was out back in the 70's. It'll be out on DVD in a couple weeks from the Warner Archives!

Why did she want yellow?
Frank7489 Who knows. It might've been stated on one of the DVD commentaries.
+Christopher Sobieniak it was never stated but he has also told everyone on the Simpsons that he came up with the yellow skin. I would love if he would acknowledge this woman.
Marina Zed He should. I just recall her name in one of the DVD commentaries but Matt also liked to bring up the TV tint control bit when stating why he thought the yellow skin worked.

this was filmed 14 years ago
Yes, took me by surprise as well when I saw "BBC MM". Can only imagine if he still considering making an animated Life In Hell animated series, maybe he has forgotten about it?
Anyway, watched all three parts, and it was thoroughly enjoyable!
planetX15 Yeah, Maybe he could stop the simpsons and try Life is Hell.
Italian 4:14
I always liked the Simpsons' animation :/
Finnish at 4:20 :D

shut up baby you love me!
Sorry
What do you mean by sorry ?
This is disheartening. Matt has something going for him, his sincerity. Then he goes and continuously takes credit for The Simpson's yellow skin. This has been debunked. He has only recently given credit publicly to the person who made this decision, a woman at the studio that animated the Tracey Ulman shorts back in the 1980's.
There will be no rock show as this interview was conducted more than 14 years ago and rock, rap, hip hop, pop, country and all music sales have become increasingly irrelevant and don't need any real critique.
Fuck yeah, Life In Hell!
binky? the guy who made "Arthur" is a total wannabe. pff
Not exactly (don't forget Jim Davis used Binky for a clown in Garfield)
Hmm not that interesting, i don no.
