Having experienced both really humid cold and very dry cold, it’s hard to pick which one is worse. Where I live in Canada, our winters are very cold and very dry, and the dryness almost feels like knives. Like slicing and stabbing. When it gets windy, it literally feels like the wind is stabbing you in the face. But the place I used to live before, it didn’t get very cold in comparison but it was humid, and it felt like the cold was leaching under your skin and settling in your bones. It felt like you’re never be warm again.
Air moisture does a really funny thing to how we experience cold.

Why do women live that far north? The northern territory is for miners, trappers and huskies. If i was female, I would insist on living no more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from the equator. No lady should have to endure living in a cold climate. Haven't you heard of 3rd wave feminism?

Modern dress trends make no sense to me. Historically women added quilted and woolen petticoats under dresses in winter, and now stores only seem to sell long skirts in summer, and winter dresses are mostly knee length or shorter. 🤷 I wear my maxi length dresses year round, with extra layers underneath. If your skirt actually covers your legs, it creates a pocket of trapped body heat around them that's so so much warmer than jeans where the wind just blows it away.

Today it was windy and -24 F, and I had 4 maxi length layers on to take out the garbage, but my legs were toasty. YMMV I guess, but it worked for me. It's why mittens are warmer than gloves. Speaking of which I need some new ones because those gloves didn't work at all, my hands were like ice.

You wear almost the same things as I do here in Finland when it's -15 or -20 (we have dry cold). But here are the couple things that I change; instead of the tank top I usually have a t shirt or nothing if I'm going to wear a knitted shirt. And under my skirt I have a pair of shorts (like pajama shorts I don't really care what they look like). Knee high socks or leg warmes on top of my normal 100 denier tights (I don't like thermal ones). And here's a confession: I don't have winter shoes, I just put a wooly thermal sole in my shoes when the temperature drops down so I wear the same shoes from early autumn to late spring. Edit: I do cycle in the winter too so I so put on ear muffs to keep my ears safe from the wind.
    Love from Finland

Shorts under is a great idea, thank you! I live in Canada and only wear skirts, with an exception for outdoors in real winter. The number one thing people ask me is "how do you stay warm?!" I commute to work with a pair of long leggings on under my dress, and take them off to just tights when I get in. I call them my travel pants! Knee high socks are amazing too. I layer thigh high slouchy wool ones with knee highs on top and it's super cute.

My Grannies were born just after 1900 when women had to wear skirts that rose almost to the knee in the 1920s. They stayed comfortable (and modest on a bike) by wearing big knickers with gathers at the bottom of the legs. Bloomers is one name. Fine cotton in the summer prevents chafing like modern shorts and crop leggings. Thermal knickers came down over the top of stockings to keep the wind out.
Smooth silky stockings were for dressing up. Lisle stockings made of cotton or wool for everyday wear, lacy knit or thicker cabled patterns for winter, like modern over the knee socks. Matching thermal vests and spencers (like a fitted tshirt) helped too. Lambswool and cashmere are very warm thinner layers for jumpers/cardigans that don't add a lot of bulk. Looking cosy and warm is great but its better when you don't feel like the Michelin man. Lol
When I lived in Scotland it was common in winter to add a woollen shawl over the coat. Even with a hat on it could be lifted from the shoulders to cover head and shoulders the way Asian women wear pashminas.
Good video btw. Great to see people developing their own style over fashion.

same and what's terrible is that the prices aren't that crazy for linen which isn't the cheapest fabric (although it is when you take into account how durable it is) and for garments that are apparently produced locally and in collaboration with small companies (with EU work standards) and all of that has a coast.
But we're so used to fast fashion and clothes being dirt cheap both in price and quality that we're taken aback when the simplest linen dress turns out to be the price of two or even three sweatshop made H&M dresses. Except that for the time your quality Baltic sisters company's dress will take to really wear out (likely very long if you actually take care of it appropriately), you'll probably have gone though a dozen of fast fashion outfits one after the other and spent a lot more than if you'd bought a couple of these dresses.
The infuriating part is the whole being poor is expensive thing because sadly, capitalism decided that workers having living wages is overrated. That makes so many people unable to afford a $130 dress or a $200+ wool coat when then need one even if they're garments that could last a decade so instead they'll get a $30 dress and a $50 coat that will be falling apart in a year or two.
And all of that is without even beginning to talk about the environmental impact of the synthetic fibres and cotton used in fast fashion vs that of linen and wool used by this brand.
That was a lot bit I guess I have feelings about clothing and capitalism oops >__>

    • @marina3240
      @marina3240 4 года назад +7

@@iyawakarehen Yeah I am aware of fast fashion and lately I've just gotten so tired of shopping for new clothes because I don't even have the money to afford it (especially when I get to thinking how I would like to buy something sustainable because I just don't have the funds) and because I know anything I buy won't last me very long, although I do already have clothes that are old and I'm still wearing it despite being maybe "outdated". That's why when I get the need to buy clothes I go to second hand stores at least. And yes what you said is absolutely right, I'm sure that the dresses on that site are made with quality material but I'm especially not used to spending sooo much money on clothing simply because I can't afford it therefore I don't know just how much some piece of actual good clothing may cost.

@@marina3240 Too true, all that. But I think one can buy less clothes and good quality clothes with the right approach (like buying timeless pieces from second hand shops). We are just simply too spoiled by having so many clothes and so many choices around us. By the way, the design of the Son de flor dresses is very similar to mori dresses. If you seach for "mori dress" on ebay you can find something cheaper in similar style (20-30 USD). I've bought a few of those and they are well made and still perfect after a few washes.

I wear leggings under my skirts and dresses too. You are very smart to keep wearing that coat. That’s exactly what I do with a coat. If it’s perfect, it stays perfect and can make a person feel dressed well on a daily basis. Another tip I have for those who sew-make a cotton flannel skirt, or half slip, to wear under your dresses and skirts, It really helps. A thousand thank yous!!!!

Used the two skirts tip on my trip to Krakow this year. I'm new to vintage fashion and traveling to a place with colder climate then Rijeka, Croatia where I'm from and mantaining it was my little personal challenge. Two skirts, cotton tights, long wollen socks and extra pair of super-thick wollen socks for the night and I made it. I was actually TOO warm half the time.
Also much more comfortable then having tights layered underneath jeans. Plus, being able to actually LAYER DOWN on the very warm bus by either rolling my socks down or taking of one of the skirts was a blessing, since I hate being stuck with two pairs of tights undernath jeans on a bus that is 23°C.

I'm also a big lover of layering, especially in winter! I've never seen thermo pantyhoses like yours tho. I can only find thermo leggings and they aren't shiny like pantyhoses are but they are great as a first layer under pants. For under dresses I usually go for woollen pantyhoses and matching woollen over-the-knee-socks to go over that. Depending on the type of over-the-knee sock you can roll them down to look like cuffs on your boots when you are indoors or just take them off. Leg warmers can function the same way.

Yes! Finally a video with actually realistic winter outfits! I often see videos with things like 'fall/winter outfit ideas' and those people just have skirts on without tights of jeans with crop tops or something... But I don't undestand that.. I would freeze to death in outfits like that.

I'd still freeze in just a blouse and waistcoat, I usually throw on a jacket/frock coat and wear a bigger overcoat so it fits under it (especially when I'm going for that 19th century dandy look).
I also double up on tights when it's below freezing - a normal 50 den and then a thick wool one on top.
Underskrits are great, I started using them when I got into loli fashion and never stopped. I also have some nice wool skirts. One even has real pockets!
And finally - sheepskin or faux sheepskin coats. Warmer and somewhat less heavy than wool, with the fluffy part on the inside.

Living in North Louisiana I get the humidity factor. We have long, hot sticky summers that last into October and then wet, cool to cold January, February and early March. So while it may only get into the 30-40s F it is wet and feels so much colder. Layering is key and I love the looks you put together.

I really like your glasses. Also, if you let your skin get cold all fall, it will "harden off" and you will no longer feel much cold at all. I didn't believe this until a friend went through an entire Mid-Atlantic US winter in shorts to prove it.
