I think fleece lined tights under a skirt are warmer than pants. You get a "mitten effect" where the heat from both legs becomes trapped under the skirt and keeps your whole bottom half warm, rather than the legs being isolated in the pant legs like fingers in gloves.
My fave tip when layering tights over tights, or socks over tights, is to wear footless or stirrup tights on the bottom layer. It prevents excess tension on the toes.
it makes a big difference what fabric the tights are made of. take e. g. fleece or woolen tights or layer two pairs on top of each other and it's as warm as a pair of trousers i'd say :) thanks for your tips 😊
Never would have thought of two pairs of tights! I do find fleece tights are a lot warmer than jeans for sure. I would love to find affordable wool tights if anyone has recommendations. Or at least if they are pricey I would love to hear what brands are worth the $$
@@downtoearthsewing I hate it when my pants sort of freeze when I go outside if you know what I mean. I walk outside and my jeans get stiff and hurt my skin within seconds of being outside
I often find tights much warmer than jeans (never wear them anymore). You kan also layer a cotton legging under a nice tight, fx a 80 denin. I personally really like the tights from Snag, and they have woolen ones too. They are more expensive, but I personally find that they are worth it. Alternativly H&M have thigger cotton tigths that's also quite warm 🙂
I'm disabled with bad circulation so I'm always cold - fabric type makes a huge difference. Any kind of wool (cashmere, merino, lambswool) is much warmer than synthetic fibres, especially merino thermal leggings and tops. I usually find lots of wool jumpers and skirts second hand too!
My secret is a half-slip. What some people are calling a "slip skirt" but the proper name is a half-slip. It's especially good for unlined midi or maxi skirts that cling to leggings. (because I wear leggings under skirts when it gets colder, they are warmer than tights) It's so annoying to walk and have your skirt cling and bunch up between your legs. A silky slippery nylon half-slip solves that problem and keeps the skirt hanging free and moving in a flowing way.
@@downtoearthsewing especially on those dry winter days when the air is so full of static electricity and you get little shocks touching your hair or a car door. They make slips that have anti-static properties!
@@beepwrld You're welcome! I have a white one and multiple black ones in different lengths. In summer I also love a petti-slip or pettipants (might be called by either name) but it's made of nylon slip fabric but in a loose culotte cut. It's like flowy slip shorts. It eliminates thigh chafing and is WAY more comfortable and cool and airy than wearing bike shorts under skirts and dresses. All of the modern anti chafing shorts are tight and clingy and give swamp-a$$, but grannies knew better. You need airflow!
I love leggings + socks + boots. Fleece-lined leggings are a game-changer imo. Another key item is a slip. It helps your skirt move freely and not stick to your tights. A longer skirt or dress with a slip (or lining) plus fleeced tights and boots and a good overcoat keep me warm enough, so I don't see the need to try the more creative options 😊 Don't forget hats, gloves, and scarves. Like you said, keeping the top warm is very important.
girllll the look you made with the flare pants and short skirt deeply inspired me... never thought I would try styling pants with short skirts but I'm going to give it a go! such great tips and a very streamlined video! loved it.
What perfect timing; I just searched for this very topic a few days ago! I second everyone recommending fleece leggings! I wear them almost daily from October to April. I also recommend flannel skirts! I made a few from old flannel bedsheets in the 1700s tie-waist style, and they are the BEST for keeping warm in winter! Fleece leggings plus two or three long skirts are much warmer than just leggings with jeans. 1700s petticoats are simple and easy to make. American Duchess has a free pattern on their blog, highly recommend it.
i’m a skirt girly 100% but i never know how to wear them in winter so i feel like my fashion sense goes out the window when it’s cold outside so BLESS U for this video🙏🏾
Yayyy!!! Genius as always!!! I super love that you used the plain black dress and skirt in a lot of the outfits, because I think a vast majority of us have a black dress. Also, for all the chic ones that collect lingerie at the thrift stores, it is perfect for the winter layered both above and below the clothes! 🖤🖤🖤
I'm usually not a fan of skirts over trousers but the silhouette of that short black skirt over trousers look is so fun! Makes me wanna try it. I moved from England to SKorea earlier this year and the winters are much harsher here so I feel like I'm having to learn how to dress for the cold all over again. Apparently long coats are key
Love the ideas here. I have a maxi skirt and dress combo that I'm now keen to try! My biggest issue with longer skirts is the snow and slush. Not just because of the mess , but because my snow boots, by necessity, do not mess around with being stylish. I wear big, clompy, kamik boots. They look ridiculous with anything that's not leggings/skinny pants. Oh well. Maybe I'll only look nice indoors!
year long skirt wearers RISE UP🗣️ I'm happy to report that I finally tried wearing a short skirt over pants and I loved it so much. Sure they were black on black, but I DID feel very cool. I can't wait to find another skirt/pant combination to try
I just found your videos. The last one I watched was “styling a mystery box” video. I asked my husband to click another video from your channel as I was washing baby bottles and my hands were wet. He clicked this video and as someone who’s from an equally cold state I rolled my eyes and laughed “wear tights” before it started. I am SO THANKFUL I saw these fits. I too use these tips but I enjoyed the outfits you put together thoroughly. Thank you for the inspiration. 💗 Total success!
Hey Liz, I love your content! I’m not engaged, but have been to +weddings and am in a long term relationship so YA GIRL’S THINKING, OK…👀 would love to see your take on bridal outfits for an elopement wedding / wedding style in general. I hate the idea of a wedding dress being so $ for one day. I love the idea of layering/reusing items/altering etc. It seems like bridal wear is one of the most conventional things out there (especially in western culture) and would love to see where your creativity goes on subverting those norms. (You totally don’t need to do this, but I’d love to see it!) okay, luv u byyyeee 💖
As a viewer from Sweden, I appreciate that your cold weather looks actually work for cold weather :) Although trickier when it gets down to -20c and colder.
Try full thick wool skirts, that works for me. Anden if they are full enough I imagine you can wear some termo pants under it when out in the frost ❄️❄️❄️ I am thinking the slimmer versions, not the ski ones 😄 Income from Denmark, so not so cold as in Sweden, but I haven't had the need fore thermal pant, but I have serverel wool skirts where they would fit under 🙂
@@Bina.Adamina Swedes are born with thermo pants 😄 Well, almost. Actually never tried a wool skirt. Did you see the thermo skirts as well? "Täckkjol"? Some don't look that bad, especially not when it's -20 😅
I know it’s a little safe, but I like the Nanny method where you just wear a matching base and then layer a dress or skirt over it. My personal favorite is cheetah print. Ill have to challenge myself to winterize my dresses because they are not the right material, but my skirts will work great with some of the ideas in the video. I have a lot of statement pieces that don’t get seen in winter but absolutely should, like a full length, sheer purple, vintage lingerie dress. I am going to try to layer it over my black mermaid skirt and a black turtleneck.
I totally appreciate your creative, free style in championing dresses and skirts year around. It's given me some more ideas to help me avoid being stodgy (which I detest), while still being warm.
I know it's not an item a lot of people will have on their wardrobe, but i love the look of harem pants under a maxi or midi peasant skirt. I'm also someone always trying to sneak in medieval fair garb into my everyday wardrobe so ymmv
I got a pair of fleece lined tights in my skintone so i can wear any color of patterned tights over them for an interesting contrast underneath a miniskirt. I think you can also buy them in red or blue if you wanna get experimental. Either way its kept me warm during the freezing cold while still looking cute.
When i lived in nyc, i survived winter by wearing warm base layers (Uniqlo heattech) underneath my sleeveless summer dresses, wool socks, and cute scarves. If it got below freezing, i'd start using the Ultra Warm line.
you're really making me look at my wardrobe in a different way! while I wouldn't personally see myself wearing all the looks you show, they always look intentional and I really appreciate the thought process behind it, it's very inspiring :) keep up the good work!
I wore a skirt over a dress today because of this video. The skirt is shorter than the dress and if I'd tried this combo a few days ago, I would've ended up changing out the skirt for a longer one so the bottom of the dress wasn't visible. But I decided to try it today and I'm really happy with how it looked!
If you add a mid-waist belt or empire waist belt to the shorter dress with the long-sleeve dress, it will add the definition you are looking for without adding more layers on top. also, pairing these with boots is a really good idea.
i NEEDED this . been feeling like wearing skirts & dresses lately but i also don’t wanna freeze my ass off . this is perfect ❤️🩹 istg u’re one of the most creative fashion channels on here ! i always get inspired by ur looks
This video is super helpful and you're a genius as usual but I can't stop falling in love with that red dress over and and over. It looks good with EVERYTHING what a golden find. ❤❤❤
Beautiful looks as always! As a short skirt person, if I really really want to wear one out in the winter I'd put on thick fleece-lined tights/stir-ups, shorts under the skirt, over the knee socks and legwarmers. Or just tights (because no way I'm wearing a skirt without even inside during winter) and stuff my skirt into my winter trousers. But that is just because when it's too cold, it doesn't matter what you look like when outside :DD
I'm just making bloomers to wear with long socks under skirts in winter. The bloomers will end under the knees. I wanted to try something other than leggins because they're not that comfortable bc they're tight. And bloomers will trap air under them so that will be warmer. I loved the red dress with white skirt underneath!
i love long bloomers, I've been wearing them under skirts bc I also hate compression with leggings or bike shorts. Silk is nice for insulating heat but still not too bulky
@bun__ I love mine too! I made mine from thick cotton and they've been warm enough in -4 celsius. But yeah some other fabric probably for colder weather :) or i was thinking cotton outside and fleece lining inside but that would be a bit bulky
Great video! Recently experimented with he nineties way of wearing jeans under skirts, but for that vibe, I felt happiest wearing boot cut jeans. I found that I could get away with waistband/ loops etc by wearing a pleated skirt. Also, feel like mentioning, trousers under dresses is like a traditional dress in India, middle east etc.
You can also wear a short sleeve shirt underneath a long sleeve shirt with an overcoat on top for extra warmth. You can also wear a long sleeve shirt underneath a short sleeve top and the overcoat will hide the long sleeves, so you can play around with many different patterns on the short sleeve top because only the torso will be showing.
I already knew a lot of these tips bc they just seemed natural to me, but I appreciate how you put it into words. You’re so thoughtful about fashion, I love it. And I will never get tired of your pants under dresses and skirts looks!!
don’t forget about those winter tights that pinterest aggressively advertises: They look like sheer tights but have tan fleece on the inside to keep you super warm! they’re a game changer for more dressy outfits but i wear leggings (sometimes fleece-lined) + a skirt/dress + boots pretty much daily in the cold months!
I absolutely love this video! I dress very eclectic and stylish, so it’s always great to see someone else not afraid to put outfits together like you did! Thank you for sharing! ❤❤❤
Also! FLEECE LEGGINGS if you live where it's really cold. A black fleece legging will also look just like tights. And you can add some scrunchy wool socks with doc martens, chunky loafers, or combat boots instead of tall boots to get some different looks. Fleece leggings + layered skirts would be extra, super cozy too. Liz - I loved the red dress over the white skirt. That's a very Christmas-y look that would be really cute for going caroling or to an outdoor market or festival. It was SO cute on you! I'm also thinking if you added the short plaid dress over the dress and skirt, then a long black coat with some red accessories that would also be such a perfect, cozy holiday look! Thank you for all the stunning ideas you give us. ❤❤❤
i highly recommended fleece lined tights! soooo warm & they make ones that look like a skin tone & tights. basically indistinguishable from sheer tights (i’ve only seen in lighter skin tone but hopefully that’s changing)
Oo this video was helpful! I don’t have many skirts and only have one dress that’s hard to style but I still love wearing them, can just never find a good way. These tips help me think a bit outside of my comfort zone, which is relatively small when it comes to skirts and dresses. Thank you!!
I love this video! Why did I never think of some of these ideas?? Feeling super inspired to experiment more and excited to think I can get much more use out of my clothes by layering!! Thankyou!
Great tipps. Love them all. I have been wearing skirst and dresses for years now through all seasons. I have another tipp for you concerning leggings (which I prefer to tights any time - tights seem to fall down on me and leave this uncomfortable sagging bit between my legs - if you know what I mean - feels like beeing in Kindergarten again with woolly tights in the seventies - yikes) Anyway: I use thermal leggings under my dresses and skirts or I sometimes even wear two pair of leggings over each other. Works great. Depending on what look I go for, I sometimes wear light cotton pants over my leggings; the ones that have elastic on the leg hem and are like 3/4 lenght. It gives it a kind of Bloomer Look. If those 3/4 pants have lace trim, it looks even better under skirts (don`t forget the leggings underneath ;-) ) . The tipp of wearing knee highs under the leggings is also great. Sometimes leggings can ride up on the bottom, leaving bare skin around the ankles, if only wearing socks. I really came to love the knee high solution. Huggs from Fairy Tale Cottage, Schurwald Forest, Germany. ❤🧑🎄🌲🌲🌲🎀
I live in northern Russia (it's minus 20C for me rn, pls shoot me) and I love wearing skirts in winter! Thick midi-skirt + thermal leggins + tall boots = you're golden. I can take my daily 1 hour walk and ✨not die✨ easily! Not to mention midi-skirts won't get as dirty in "wonderful" city snow (aka puke) as a pair of jeans would. Today my colleague was like -- "how aren't you dead tho", while she was wearing her skinny jeans with nothing underneath. Come on, girl :) Moral of the story -- learn to dress for the weather, peeps! And it's doesn't have to be boring or ugly (unless you want it to be in the name of feshon). Thank you for the tips, Liz
I recently bought some thigh high leg warmers and they are a winter game changer for me. I can wear my short skirts and tights and still feel super warm, plus they look absolutely sick
You are my absolute fave fashion stylist on RUclips! Love your thrifts and ideas too!! Lots of love from the uk! Also your hair is..AMAZING. I need tutorials on all your fave hairstyles…
The impact of the outfit at 11:56 though, idk if it's everything falling exactly into place with the silhouette, your hair colour, the tone contrast, the androgyny - it made me GASP. I feel very inspired! Watching a second time so I can take some screenshots. I wonder if there's something so unique about your approach to building outfits almost from an illustrator's perspective? Love your videos!
Liz, MONTHS ago there was a comment under one of your videos by a person who likes to layer shorts and pants (If you're reading this - you're living in my head rent free) and I'm just so intrigued by this idea, please make a video where you give this a try! I'd love to see if your can make it work for yourself and what you come up with. It sounds like the end boss of layering.
After watching this video maybe I finally have the courage to wear skirts in winter. In example, on those warmer winter days for starters (I live in Finland. Winters can be be brutal here)
Awesome! I combo dresses and pants quite regularly, but there were still a lot of new aspects and ideas to discover in your video. It feels like a part of a series, together with the layering one that made me discover your channel. All the best!
I recently layered a pair of black adidas pants under a plain black midi dress with a white button up and black sweater over everything. It was so cute, I didn’t want to take it off 😅
I'm an older woman looking for some ideas to go out to a nice restaurant this Saturday and I like the idea of a skirt even though it will be in the 40s. I will be coming back to this video when I actually plan my outfit because I definitely think I can make a couple of them work without looking like I think I'm in my 20s ... because I am not. lol Great ideas!
Level 2 is just the best inspiration for fashion that blew my mind. Such cool ideas and I never thought about it like that. 🎉❤. Just loving it and I can't wait to experiment with my own clothes around it. Thank you so much for sharing 💜👍
Your last video already made me take skirts out of the summer closet. But this one is so much inspiring! I've been able to mentally make outfils with my wardrobe while watching the vide The red long dress is stunning on you
One of my few potentially winter weather dresses is a berry corduroy shirt dress. It has a lot of potential, but if I wear it just as it is it ends up looking way too FLDS sister wife. Any suggestions for how to make a long corduroy shirt dress more chic/eccentric/etc.?
this is so timely lol, just yesterday i was putting together two skirts and a dress for an outfit and was thinking of your videos!! always love the inspo and seeing where ur brain is at, thanks for sharing
I like to put tights and biker shorts on top of the tights to keep warm under the skirts, this way I wear also short skirts and dresses in a colder weather. Then I of course wear tall boots, so that there really isn't much leg with tights only exposed at all.
I wish it was cold enough where I live to have this problem 😂 For me it's the opposite. Skirts are a good option to style in winter without overheating from all the layers and cute jackets, sweaters and scarves I want to wear
Did you see that dua lipa wore a vintage Chanel bed jacket over a lace body suit to the academy gala?? It totally reminds me of your white bed jacket idea!!
sometimes your videos are a bit too wild for my taste. I watch them purely because the combinations are very artistic to me and you're so upbeat it makes me happy. BUT THIS VIDEOOO I feel was made for meee. Thanks so much now I will now go EXPERIMENT. PS: PLS make a video about how to dress cute when you're an athlete or dancer. tbh would be awesome to see you do some dance aesthetic inspired fits as well. Hugs from NYC
Loved this video and I’ve definitely been needing some inspiration for some more cold weather outfits! DC is getting colder by the day and I know I’m gonna have fun styling some cold weather outfits in the early months of 2024 🤭🤭
I am wearing leggings and skirts indoors and out. Because I'm on the ground floor so it's freezing in here. Today I've also got on a jumper, fleece and snoodie yes I've had the heating on but as soon as I turn it off its freezing again. So it's a snoodie and blanket all the way.

Thank you!!
yay I'm so glad, you're welcome!! :') I hope some of these ideas work out for you
I love this video! Why did I never think of some of these ideas?? Feeling super inspired to experiment more and excited to think I can get much more use out of my clothes by layering!! Thankyou!
LOVE this. all my dresses/skirts are silk or have slits though. i would LOVE to see what you would suggest for those kind of “issues” 🥲🫶

Im a fellow skirt( kilt wearer) my kilts are all year around. Cool in summer and warm in winter!
Consider my creativity sparked! Thankyou Liz ❤
I have a thick long wool skirt and I love it for winter. Its so warm
the dream winter skirt!!
Wow skirts are beautiful.
as a native Floridian going north for the holidays, you really helped a girl out thank you 😭
the short skirt and pants combo.... slayyyyyyy
LMAO I.. love this comment so much. That comment also lives in my head rent free and I just might have to try it out now. Agree it is final boss level
Omg the timing is exquisite! I just got a bunch of cute tights! It’s skirt season all year round!
hell yeah babey!!!!
After watching this video maybe I finally have the courage to wear skirts in winter. In example, on those warmer winter days for starters
(I live in Finland. Winters can be be brutal here)
These outfits pleasantly surprised me, I’ve never really seen anything like it! Girl, you ate
It was so cute, I didn’t want to take it off 😅
That sounds like such a fun outfit!
The last one was my absolute favourite. I love avante garde looks and that's why I keep coming back haha. I am hungry for those LEWKS 😍😍
Level 2 is just the best inspiration for fashion that blew my mind. Such cool ideas and I never thought about it like that. 🎉❤. Just loving it and I can't wait to experiment with my own clothes around it. Thank you so much for sharing 💜👍
thank you for giving the wisconsin girlies what we need
Those red boots are fabulous!!😍
Your last video already made me take skirts out of the summer closet. But this one is so much inspiring! I've been able to mentally make outfils with my wardrobe while watching the vide
The red long dress is stunning on you
One of my few potentially winter weather dresses is a berry corduroy shirt dress. It has a lot of potential, but if I wear it just as it is it ends up looking way too FLDS sister wife. Any suggestions for how to make a long corduroy shirt dress more chic/eccentric/etc.?
this has already become my favorite video of yours!
Wisconsin is freezing and I AM INSPIRED for the upcoming freezing temperatures!
those paisley velvet pants are so extra! I need to go find myself a pair STAT
I found you just in time for winter!! I just finally got into my own personal style but winter is challenging me
Obsessed with your paisley velvet pants 😍
I loved mini skirt with pants look!
this is so timely lol, just yesterday i was putting together two skirts and a dress for an outfit and was thinking of your videos!! always love the inspo and seeing where ur brain is at, thanks for sharing
omg I am so honored you thought of me!! Hope you got some good inspo
Genius ideas and styling! I love the avant-garde looks most!
I like to put tights and biker shorts on top of the tights to keep warm under the skirts, this way I wear also short skirts and dresses in a colder weather. Then I of course wear tall boots, so that there really isn't much leg with tights only exposed at all.
brilliant!!
I wish it was cold enough where I live to have this problem 😂 For me it's the opposite. Skirts are a good option to style in winter without overheating from all the layers and cute jackets, sweaters and scarves I want to wear
your power remains unmatched, love love love as always!!
omg this is so kind lol thank you!!!
As a Canadian girl, thank you for this!
Miss, do you often leave out tights in winter just wearing two dresses ? You often wear naked arms under a coat in winter?
Thank you for your style tips.
Omg!! I was just looking for this on your channel 🫢🩵🙏🏻
it has arrived!!!
Hugs from NYC
you give me so much inspiration. thank you.
My style inspo 💅 loving your content lately, Liz!
thank you so much!!
i use the uniqlo heattech "leggings" (the see through ones) as tights in the winter and its great
oo great to know!
Yes!!! To pants with dresses and skirst
So creative! I love the outfits!! ❤
Adding wearing a slip and a padded bra add a lot of warmth
Oh I love how the short skirts and dresses look over the longer ones! I don't own anything short tho, I shall have to ✨️Experiment✨️
Loved this video and I’ve definitely been needing some inspiration for some more cold weather outfits! DC is getting colder by the day and I know I’m gonna have fun styling some cold weather outfits in the early months of 2024 🤭🤭
I dont really wear Dresses/ skirts but i Definitely will start
love that this inspired you to branch out!!
I am wearing leggings and skirts indoors and out. Because I'm on the ground floor so it's freezing in here. Today I've also got on a jumper, fleece and snoodie yes I've had the heating on but as soon as I turn it off its freezing again. So it's a snoodie and blanket all the way.
Omg thank you 😊 💓 💗 💖 Loved this so much 💖
New beepworld!!
Thank you kt's so helpful ❤
Very creative💕
The paisley pants are as cool in your outfits as a leather jacket.
