The best advice I ever heard was "Sewing and Collecting Fabric are two different hobbies." Really made me think a lot differently about what I actually wanted my hobby to be and kicked me into gear on finally working through my stash.
It is so refreshing to see someone make mistakes sewing and not have it all figured out. Makes me feel so much better. Thanks for being honest and showing your journey.
I can't tell you how many times I've cut the wrong side, had to seam rip entire pieces, etc. And I've been sewing since I was 4 years old (I'm 33 now, so 29 years)! Don't feel bad when you make a mistake--even the most seasoned sewists screw up!! That being said, your projects look amazing!
Stretch fabric was my arch nemesis in the 90s! Get some machine needles just for stretch fabric-not “universal” (what a lie!). They are the secret ingredient!
after watching this video yesterday, i went to my overloaded fabric bin and made 3 scrunchies, a bandana, and started a skirt!!! (after not touching my sewing machine in at least a year) this was so inspiring you gotta do it again sometime 😭❤️
Nice work! For sewing knit fabrics, I recommend buying a ballpoint needle. So affordable and will make sewing stretch fabric an absolute dream, as it won't jam and pull the fabric into your machine, and instead, the ballpoint will gently move between fibres. A twin needle is another great lil addition to your sewing kit, as it gives stretch items, such as tshirts, a professional looking and slightly stretchy hem, without the need for a coverstitch machine, which is used in professional sewing workrooms. Two items that I think make sewing and altering your clothes easier in future, that I reach for constantly now!
Ok this is great to know, although I actually did use a ballpoint needle for that skort originally and it still wasn't quite right!! this machine is a very old hand-me-down so I think this sort of thing just happens sometimes hahah
@@sarahkinsey5434this used to happen to me and then a friend suggested that I could be pulling my fabric out wrong. Like once you finish sewing, you need to pull the fabric out from under the foot by pulling it away from you (so in the same direction you were sewing), otherwise the next thing you sew may be screwed up. If you forget, just pull a bit of extra thread back before you start. Since I changed my habits, I no longer get weird tension or tangles under the fabric. Idk if this will solve your problem but it's such an obscure thing that no one teaches you!!
@@helenm1085 thanks I’ll to remember! Most times I’ll be sewing along and then hear a *tink* sound and then it does the loopy thing. It’s only once in a while so it could maybe be thread
You should be so proud of yourself for just jumping in and trying it. It can be so scary to do something you’ve never done before. To put so much time into something that doesn’t work out or look how you want it to. But at the end of the day it’s how we learn. 👏👏
Having a fabric stash is super normal, people have their fabrics for much longer than 3 years, you're fine ❤ (I've gotten fabric from someone who inherited a huge vintage stash. And no, I haven't sewn those fabrics yet haha)
I came to the comment section to say this, too. I held onto scrapbooking supplies for 9 years before I decided to use them. It's completely normal to cycle through your interests or just like having tools and supplies for the potential to use them eventually.

It's a very happy coincidence how well the plaid patch lines up with the other plaid, I feel like that really makes it make sense on the red one in a more intentional way. Hi Liz! I love your creative videos and I am always SO EXCITED to see people sewing! I just want you to know that all of those struggles that you had are completely normal for even the most experienced sewist. The more you persevere through the mistakes, the more you'll learn and the less you'll make them over time. I have a machine that hates knit fabric (skort) as well, but I now use a walking foot and it's much less of a headache. One thing to remember, if you're going to use existing garments for your patterns, don't forget to add seam allowance. Congratulations on your beautiful bias finish. It looks great! And I really love your plaid skirt. What a great idea!
You did so good, those finishings on the top!! ✨️ I feel like all of the pieces would go together as well, even the little pajamashorts with the patchwork top and the lovely pop of red ribbon tied in front. What an inspiring video!
Loved your video and what a great idea for a challenge. I need to do the same but my stash has been around much longer than yours. More like 10 years. All those challenges you had are so familiar, Ive done exactly the same things. Absolutey loved your patchwork top and know both my daughter and grand-daughter will want one of their own. Was most impressed by your bias making and application, looks amazing. Oh and your skorts look great, big win also. Look forward to watching you again.
The triceratops scrunchie is just amazing 😁 I'm hand sewing my first ever tank top (and first work with knitted fabrics) while watching this, good fun! 😊
It doesn't always work, but in the future you may want to do a "baste" stitch before actually sewing the "real" stitch/seam in order to stabilize the fabric enough for it to go through the machine well. A basting stitch is just a straight stitch; it can be long and loose, or you can do it closer/tighter; do it by hand, or do it by machine (sometimes problematic fabric will go through the machine with a straight stitch but not a zigzag the first time through; so you can run it through once with a straight stitch to stabilize the material and then set your stitch type to a zig-zag and run it through a second time either "running over" that first straight stitch/basting stitch or running very, very close to it.). A major thing to keep in mind is to not tie-off/knot-off/back stitch the basting stitch if you plan to remove it later; often for stretchy fabric you'll want to remove the basting stitch after it's served it's purpose. One way to help keep track is to use up contrast random-color thread for the basting so it's really obvious which stitches you need to pick out from the fabric later. If you are working with a non-stretch woven, like something that unravels a lot or warps but doesn't "stretch and recover"; then you may want to leave in the basting stitch as an extra layer of structure. For one more finishing detail that might be handy; search for videos explaining how "under stitching" works; it's basically one more line of stitching you can add to force seems to face a certain direction instead of flipping around. Overall, there are many videos exploring how basting/ prepping the fabric can really help. I understand that the logistics of ironing means that it's not always possible (and synthetic fabrics should usually not get ironed), but if you happen to work with natural fiber on any given project, ironing "as you go" with each / every few seams can help to both flatten down the layers of material to feed through the machine better and causes the thread to "mesh" into the weave of the fabric itself. I am not an expert sewist and I absolutely do not judge how others choose to go through the order of operations to complete a project, but sometimes there's information that we don't run into until later in our journeys that we wish we had known about sooner (even if we never use the information; collecting knowledge nuggets to keep in the back of our minds can prove handy later) so I just mentioned these points above but I'm not trying to infer/pressure anyone into doing things one way or another; it's all about finding your personal sewing style and feeling confident that it's a mix of whatever techniques that make the process fun and positive.

My favorite project was the skirt because of the contrast, yet it all works together. It's both really "wild" and somehow also not; it's really, really well balanced; if you pair it with more "neutral" colors on top it plays it down and if you pair it with bright colors, or prints, it plays it up; I love getting inspiration for these sort of super-versatile pieces that can weave in and out of a bunch of different styles/substyles! Also going with a curved line was both daring (in terms of the technical aspect) yet it totally paid off. Sorry not sorry I might one day copy your homework on this one.
Beautiful work! I always wonder how people take unlikely colors and mix and match them to create some cool patchwork garments. You also got me inspired to make some bandanas! 😮
Oh, the shirt finishing is absolutely amazing! And funnily enough the by-product shorts are probably my favourite :D And the skort looks fantastic. Well, everything you make is fantastic!
So proud and inspired. I had to laugh (with empathy) at your troubles with your sewing machine. I learned how to sew on a haunted Brother machine, that was a hand me down, in the 60’s; it would choose the projects it wanted me to successfully complete.❤
This video is inspiring. I have a plethora of projects that I want to get done before I move next year. But some of them are items I have had for YEARS. It’s overwhelming. But I guess I gotta start somewhere!
It’s so annoying I know but having the appropriate needles per fabric really helps! Also changing needles in general so they’re not too dull! I also just started starching fabrics that are too flimsy & it has changed my life
Congrats on your projects and learning process. I am increasingly more inspired to start my own channel to share my experience and sewing tips by watching other YT creators, I've learned so much thru my life and really should just do it already 🙃🧵🪡
If you have trueble with strechy fabric, try other kind of needles and diferent settings on your machine. There's a ball point needle that i use and i never had any other issues with fabrics like tshirt material or spandex.
Hi, this is the first time the algorithm has thrown you my way. I really enjoyed your video. Everything you made you kept saying I’ve never done this before, so I was a little worried. Your blouse did turn out looking so perfect. I really liked all of the things that you made. I think I will subscribe and see how you get along.
Thank you so much for this video 🥲 I have been putting off a whole bunch of projects bc I’m dreading all the inevitable mistakes, but your good sense of humor about it made me feel so SEEN and now I’m excited again thank you thank you
this came at the perfect time!! i've been trying to find a skort that fits me properly for honestly years with no luck, might as well give sewing one myself a try! the hair bandana is also SO cute. you did such a great job on everything!!
I feel your paaaaiiin with the "accidentally cutting out backwards.... twice" situation, omg. Two years ago, I made a pair of black and white jeans, and the white demin was pretty expensive and hard to find. You BET I cut out the (white) back left leg backwards. So, I decided to problem solve and re-cut the *black* demin instead, since that was much cheaper and I had more of it. Yeah, I cut that second left leg backwards too🙃. So, now I have two back pieces ready for a two different pairs of shorts, i guess?
My dog was very concerned about the scream at the end. Just 80 pounds of pitbull looking around for a damsel in distress. I wasn't a believer the 2 plaids would go together but the skirt turned out really cute.
Is it difficult to pull the patchwork tank {my favorite} over your head? It appears to be fitted but I am unable to tell if you added a zipper. Great video. I appreciate this diy video. Take care & Thank you.
My sewing projects look just like yours! Struggles with zigzacks on specific fabrics. Cutting wrongliy on right/wrong side, lots of trial and error with the fitting: Honestly: in the end we LEARN so much from every Project!❤
Ah the doom pile of fabric stash you're definitely going to use soon 😅 I know it too well. Mine occupies half the floor space of my wardrobe 😂😂 (And I have another pile of refashion/adjusting/mending clothes too 😭) I love this motivation to tackle those sewing piles! ❤ thank you

I feel thiiiiis 😭 the amount of times I had to ask my mom for help… ….. in the span of a few minutes …. Yeesh. …. o-o
I’ve physically punched both my serger and my machine Bc both have given me a headache. 😂😂

So proud and inspired. I had to laugh (with empathy) at your troubles with your sewing machine. I learned how to sew on a haunted Brother machine, that was a hand me down, in the 60’s; it would choose the projects it wanted me to successfully complete.❤
LOL gotta start referring to this sewing machine as haunted - it’s also a hand me down. I’m glad you enjoyed the antics regardless!
The scrunchie is really really good!
The tank looks SOO good 👏🏼🥳
the patchwork tank top and skort were so impressive!
I love that you made the patch removable! Wanna try that one myself 🤔
So impressive! I only ever alter stuff I find, making it entirely new blows my mind
Wait I loveeeeee the duo plaid skirt!!
Also loved the scrunchie idea!!
21:36 I think you could maybe wear the ruffle top backwards as well perhaps? Have the solid orange panel as the front? Great jobs on all these ❤
The red skort looks so professional!
Off topic but the hair this vid so cute
aw thank you!!
This video is inspiring. I have a plethora of projects that I want to get done before I move next year. But some of them are items I have had for YEARS. It’s overwhelming. But I guess I gotta start somewhere!
That is the patchwork tank top of my DREAMS omg 😍
It’s so annoying I know but having the appropriate needles per fabric really helps! Also changing needles in general so they’re not too dull!
I also just started starching fabrics that are too flimsy & it has changed my life
Your wardrobe and style is so inspiring, awesome vid
Love the Milanote idea to organize!!
awesome ye. the skort is amazing
They all turned out great I really like the scrunchie but I would be more on the small ruffle side or even a bow
I'm totally stealing this. Thank you for this video!
I'd love it if you made more videos like this (but of course the rest of your content is amazing too).
The tank top is beautiful!
Thank you so much for this video 🥲 I have been putting off a whole bunch of projects bc I’m dreading all the inevitable mistakes, but your good sense of humor about it made me feel so SEEN and now I’m excited again thank you thank you
this came at the perfect time!! i've been trying to find a skort that fits me properly for honestly years with no luck, might as well give sewing one myself a try! the hair bandana is also SO cute. you did such a great job on everything!!
omg I hope you do and it turns out great!! & thank you so much :')
BALL POINT or "jersey" needle on knits. Use a zig zag knit stitch of 3-stitch zig zag.
using a ribbon on the scrunchie is so smart!!
My dog was very concerned about the scream at the end. Just 80 pounds of pitbull looking around for a damsel in distress.
I wasn't a believer the 2 plaids would go together but the skirt turned out really cute.
LOL I am so sorry to your dog!!!
Well done! Favorite is skort
All bangers!!!!! 🔥❤️
Ah the doom pile of fabric stash you're definitely going to use soon 😅 I know it too well. Mine occupies half the floor space of my wardrobe 😂😂 (And I have another pile of refashion/adjusting/mending clothes too 😭)
I love this motivation to tackle those sewing piles! ❤ thank you
