The setting is medieval Britannia, but the stories are timeless and involve universal issues that explore the essence of virtue. Then in Ultima V, you rely on your new-found strengths and skills to oppose a tyrannical leader who warps the virtues you uphold through his twisted legislation of morality.

I described Ultima to my son as the OG GTA: Open world, main quest, side quests, and unrestricted murder, theft, and mayhem, with a high degree of interally-consistent world interactivity. Car theft? Check (stealing horses). Boat theft? Check (stealing or buying ships replete with cannons and ship-to-ship combat). Robbing houses? Check. Getting useful information from someone through civilized conversation then killing them for fun? Check. Watching the cops go crazy trying to surround you? Check (guards mobbing you after bad deeds). Ultima was/is crazy. I thought it started to suck after VII, though, and even VII started showing signs of suckage despite its generally high praise from fans and critics.

I reads good in English lol. I wish I'd had more time for gameplay so I let it run over, tbh the Ultimas are a little repetitive when it comes to video gameplay tho. Really immersive, but definite grind aspects and the story is largely text based. I was thinking of seeing if Pagan would hit bc it was so controversial.

@@WhattoPlayNext Interesting thought. Very different from the other games. Might be worth a drop or two just to see.

@@KeithK469 Yeah they had gotten bought out, and went in a different direction. They had done that with Ultima VII but then it got a really negative reception. So they went and got the old dev for IX, I think it might have just been backlash, it was the first time PC Gamers had ever heard that a company sold.

Ultima should have always said Rock Onward at the title screen. It would have been half-way anachronistic (being that you're from modern Earth visiting a medieval western European low fantasy world), but fuck it. Also the background music was too loud for your dialog, making it hard to understand you sometimes. Maybe some ambient nature effects, or just key clacks and PC speaker would be chill. In any case, dig the video. Ultima V (IBM PC / compatibles port) is one of my favorite games of all time. I still have the box, manuals, and map, and it was ahead of its time and still ahead of many modern games in many ways. Awesome shit; thanks.

It's foreground, and Ultima is SciFi.
