When I was learning to shoot a couple of years ago, my instructor cautioned us to always be aware of what and who is downrange, out as far as a mile. You might not be able to hit what you want to with a .22 lr at that range, and an accidental hit probably wouldn't be fatal, but it can still hurt. Bullet speed hasn't changed much since 1955. Beware the impact area!
One of my favorite things is the 22lr. For years my son and I have been launching rounds out to 500 yards and under. When the lake my cabin is on freezes over (I'm in a very remote part of the U.P. of Michigan) we set out gongs out on the lake and shoot targets from 200 yards out to the 500 mark. When we really got addicted is when we started using image stabilizing binos besides the spotting scope. To watch the bullets path is just hilarious and that steel dinging beyond 300 yards is soooo satisfying. So we aren't shooting super accurate 22lr rilfes, kinda of a mish mash. Clean barrels, decent optics and good triggers mean more to me until someone actually makes super consistent ammo at a reasonable price. Until then its standard velocity, green tag and then some "tries" from Eley, SK... whatever. Someone needs to step up and make something with a little long range potential. And when someone does that ima buy me a really cool LR 22LR, a modern Win 52 kinda dealio. ....had to make some edits on this post for clarity and to also say that we do shoot suppressed just because. Hearing the "ffftt" and then the ding is kind of satisfying. The firing pin dropping makes more noise than the round being sent. 👍
Another great video. I shoot 40 grainers 250 yards often. There is a spot on a log that if I aim at it I will hit steel. I'm guessing I'm holding about 50" high, (?) or more. While I prefer 40 grain RN ammo 36 grain HP ammo carries very well. I find huge differences in the accuracy AND the consistency of different brands. JMO Great shooting Hero.
Back in the early "70's" Old Man Lyman (Lyman Gun Sight Corp) told me that "A .22 drops 4 feet over 200 yards, and it was a lot like shooting an "06" at 1,000." There's no substitute for trigger time!
High velocity 23LR (1200fps+-) drops below the speed of sound at +-75 yards. So often high velocity rounds soot good a 75yds🎉 but it falls apart at 100yds. All match ammo is subsonic at the muzzle. So have 2 CZ 452s stay with subsonic match ammo. Norma match ammo for s a lot better than TAC.
For your own pleasure at your own time even (does not have to be a video on it, just do it for fun!) You should really try this again with CCI Stingers. Or, perhaps, the Norma ECO Speed maybe. Great vid as always.
I do a lot of long range 22lr shooting. 250, 300, 350, 400 yards, and have fired some of those for curiosity. Stingers and Aguila Supermaximum in particular. Much flatter trajectory at out to 250 or so (which is to be expected) but the consistency of the ammo leaves much to be desired. Bullets impact in very wide spreads. Both in elevation and windage. The light bullets are easily deflected even by mild wind and the loads are so inconsistent in velocity that I've had impacts string almost up 14" vertically. The velocity is nice on those loads. Less drop to compensate for, but they just aren't consistent enough to be practical for long range 22lr. In fact I've not found any high or hyper velocity loads to be very consistent for long range usage. I continue to mostly use imported target and match ammo and just compensate for the ridiculous drop. At least the velocity and projectiles are relatively consistent on those loads.
It's been a very long time since I've seen a range test on 22lr, thanks for this as a reminder that - "yeah .22lr might have 22PSI chamber pressure, but it still can only go so far..."
I bought a savage axis 2 in 243, a rifle I never thought I'd own because i thought cheap is bad. Thanks to who tee who, I own the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. .41 inch group at 110 yards with hornady 95 grain sst. THANKS!!!!!!!
What a coincidence: I just got back from the range and after making sure my Swede Mauser was sighted in for hunting season I shot some Herters .22 LR HP out of a Savage Mark II G and discovered the bullet drop was about 16.5" from point of aim at 100m. The scope was zeroed for 50m as I recall.
Great video! Nice groups at 100&200 yards considering the hold over. The Norma Tac 22 has been very accurate in my Tikka T1X often giving under 1/2" 5 shot groups at 50 yards.
@@WHOTEEWHO pretty accurate rifle. It seemed like most everything at 50 & 100 was slightly left. And at 200 it was right. Odd phenomenon. Wind changed?
Dadgone! You’ve been getting into my “Target’s”, haven’t you? I knew it! I thought I was the only one using the highly accurate “paper plate”, target? Huh?
Longer range rimfire is always a fun and sometimes challenging endeavor. I regularly do 22lr regimens in increments of 50, 100, 175, 200, 250, 300, and sometimes 400 yards. Have you done any out to that distance? It's actually a lot of fun. I've use the Norma Tac-22 out to 300 before. It shoots pretty well out of at least 3 of my rifles. CZ MTR, Anschutz 1761 MPR, and a Bergara BXR.
Man I love my CZ 457! I have taken mine out to 300y and it does pretty great considering. With SK rifle match 200 is 23.5 MOA and 300 is 42.25 so your right in the ballpark. Mine is only a 16” barrel though so your velocity may be a little better
My experience is from 100yard zero with ~900-1200 ft/s it's between 16-18MOA depending on weather which is ~32-36" about what you are seeing. Out of a Ruger rascal, it was like over 40-60moa depending on ammo. Got hits at 200 on a 6" gong, but it took dozens of shots to figure out the drop with iron sights. I've shot thousands of rounds out to 220yards really need to test a bunch of ammo to figure out what works the best otherwise you will be chasing stuff all over the place and the wind matters a lot if you have multiple wind conditions it gets pretty tricky.
The difference between a normal CZ 457 and one with a match chamber is kinda wild but I have seen some non match chamber 457’s shoot some pretty impressive groups
It’s why I like my .260 Rem, 24’ foot to hit Bull versus the .308 Win & 33’ foot to hit Bull. My .260 will still pierce mild steel @ 1,000yds! (I used to play for Alicia Nugent-Bluegrass. I figure you might be familiar w/Bluegrass? I’ve played for others but had to give it up. That’s what my account picture is, me playing my Dobro! I miss it, miss Nashville, etc. but what are you gonna do when you got Degenerative Disk Disease? 280-days on a tour bus isn’t working out anymore!)
Have you tested the difference between the Bolt action and a simi-auto drop - it seems to me that the simi-auto would loose some of it's velocity because of the blow back of the simi-auto
I've shot some hyper velocity 22lr out to 300+ yards. Stingers, Aguila Supermaximum etc... and it does have significantly less drop. Especially out to 250 or so. However, those loads are so inconsistent that you often get very unpredictable vertical stringing. I've found it easier just to compensate for the excessive drop of consistent imported subsonic ammo than to deal with the wild inconsistency of high velocity and hyper velocity loads. The added velocity is nice but they just aren't very consistent. Out to 150 yards or so, they are certainly good enough for hunting or plinking. The added velocity is likely more helpful out to that distance anyway. Especially in regards to hunting or plinking.
Who-Tee-Who from what this ol lady's eyes see, looks like the range of the 22LR for tight group is around 50 yards. May I ask what the drop and rise of the bullet say from 10 to 50 yards. Is it flat shooting enough to hit bulls eye any where from 10 to 50 yards. Or sighting it in at 25 yards and adjust scope elevation for 50?
The 22lr is only good for hunting to 100 yards for reasonably certain hits on a 6" diameter target. With line of sight at 1 1/2" above bore centre, zero at 50-52 yards and you'll be dead on at a bit short of 25, on PoA at 52 or so and about 3" low at 100.. Beyond that, accurate shooting is not really possible without a "doped" scope, but even with that the bullet is by that time very slow and is not only dropping like a rock but is very vulnerable to wind drift etc. A reticle with mil dots will help to be more precise, but with a 100 yard zero you will miss small game at mid-range..... For hunting a knowledge of trajectory is essential, and also sighting in for a sensible MPBR. Even a Hornet at well over twice the MV is still really only a 300yard rifle at best. But then hunting and paper punching are two quite different disciplines... 🙂

8:51 re-run the bullet flight with a 400 yard zero.
This gets a steep drop angle at the zero with a nice arc getting there.
Thanks for the video.👍

On my 10/22 I have a vortex scope with bullet drop increments...I zero at 60 And it drops about 5 inches at 100.
Hey finally took out your 22. Was it caked with dust like a Egyptian artifact?
It would be interesting to see same thing with a CCI velocitors

It looks like a well done rifle range. If it’s a public range, where is the range located at?
Very enjoyable vid

Have you ever tried 17 wsm cartridges
Not yet
I have it's a crazy round I sold mine though. But lots of coyotes have fallen from it its up to 200yrd gun I'd say
The average 22LR drops approximately 4.1 inches at 100 yards.
