- This was the biggest mystery back in the Halo 2 days. There were so many theories and videos about this. I've decided to revisit it one more time and solve the mystery behind the trigates, once and for all. Enjoy!

Haha pretty much, but Bungie is known for putting so many easter eggs in their games and on numerous occasions even directly suggested some secret things are hidden on certain missions, prompting everyone to create these conspiracy theories.

You're totally right, but it just seems so obvious to be an oversight / glitch. I guess these things stand out to me more as a game developer myself.

Some of the "trigates" were just undetailed areas of their game levels, while some where markers for possible locations that the developers would make exit / entry points. They could've been locations where cutscenes would be active, but when they find their perfect setting, they scrap all the other locations and forget them.
Hey man, your videos are actually pretty sweet, kind of capture one of my favourite things about these games, and when you mentioned that a lot of old RUclipsrs' accounts are getting shut down it got me thinking that maybe you should actually make a library on another website or even in the bungie/343/waypoint forums, just to make sure that these discoveries live on :P Maybe im sentimental, but if its possible for me to have one, id like my kid to eventually be able to find this stuff too

Every time you say you're about to make a pun, I get the dumbest grin on my face because they're actually pretty good.
To save time they just flipped the textures and put them there. Where hardly anyone goes. The door is the elevator, the gate texture itself is from the depressurisation zones.

If something similar to this came up in one of 343I's games, people would rant about it being proof that they don't care about the franchise and need to FIX TEHIR GAEM!1!!1111! rather than igniting conspiracy theories.

The term you're looking for is meshes, I believe. It's basically the structure of 3D objects in a game and then they apply materials and textures and yeah, the triangle is very common in high-polycount meshes so that's for sure where the triangle "gate" comes from. This myth never really interested me as I always just saw it as a terrain glitch. You see it a lot especially in MMOs back then. It's fun to fantasize about this stuff though so I get it
I found this since MCCPC has me nostalgia digging for halo easter eggs. I remember these things being the source of such mystery and consternation for me back in the day (Especially since I was (and am) awful at grenade jumping, so finding stuff was always a hassle. I always figured that the 'gates' were a left over bug that never got fixed, partially because no one would see it, and partially because there was no time. It wouldn't surprise me to learn if they were shoddily cleaned up assets, though. After all, Halo 2 has a ton of cut levels, and a lot of cut content ON levels, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was case. Delta Halo and Regret were initially very different, considering there was a cut plot to arc-weld a thermonuclear bomb to chief's armor and send him to him to kill the gravemind. There was also a level called "Forerunner Tank" that would've taken place after regret, and served to introduce the Gravemind, and since all Halo cinematics are in-engine, if the chief fled the covenant destructo-beam in a forerunner tank, it might'e escaped along the lakebed through that hole. Again, the cutscenes are in-engine, so there would have to be those assets if they were in the cutscene.
Cairo Station is similar, originally you were going to just jump out of the station, land on the covenant ship and tear it apart from the inside. Then that they added covenant space pickle, and you were supposed to throw it into a warthog and drive it to the airlock. But that ultimately got cut and it's all just in cutscene. The remnant door under the gate might very well a left over asset from that, or an earlier version of the level. Personally, I think the gates were bugs created by the map making tools, and just left in cause there were more important things to work on. Maybe it's a left over from deleting geometry, and that's why it sits on the door like that.

when they were texturing it they probably just coated it with new textures without realizing that they were already used, you may find that cairo station door texture within cairo station or in a UNSC place with maybe a working door or a covered door instead, as im sure they didn't go around the map texture checking as its out the map and not many people would go there anyway
The button is meant to mean the "blue screen of death", as said in the video. because you know that the blue screen was a nightmare in game development back then

on Cairo Station the holes you were seeing are to do missing assets, its a mirror of the side with In Amber Clad, but there are holes where the umbilicals should be, and where the doors leading back inside should be. So whats behind the gate, a big ass elevator.
webduelist so it's a docking port for a ship. and they were trying to add on to it but ran out of time and money like they always do?
I don't think they were trying to add on, it was always there but the player wasn't meant to be there, unlike the Pillar of Autumn, Cairo Station is a complete 1:1 model, it was also used in the OG Halo 2 cut scenes, so the whole model had a complete texture map but some assets such as doors and umbilicals were missing since it was shown from a distance and wouldn't be distinguishable anyways.
Since Halo 2 AV has pre rendered cut scenes to save time they just copied the texture map from the docking port with In Amber Clad, to the side that didn't. Which resulted in these holes do to the alpha channel in the texture map meant for the side with assets.
webduelist I was more pointing out how bungie ran out of time constantly. and it could have been an expansion of the level that never happened and bungie also didn't have time to remove them from the script. just a theory.
The area you're in at the second one, at around 22:00, looks like a duplicate of the area after you get out into space and fight the jetpack elites and then have to go into the door for the elevator to the bomb.
Basically, that door that you're looking through to see the back of the gate? That looks like that doorway for the elevator that just hasn't been loaded yet. Same general shape and everything, just missing some objects and stuff that obviously wouldn't be there yet.
And the holes in the walls? Where other geometry would be place intersecting the walls, therefore they wouldn't be textured. I could be wrong but that seems far more plausible than some grand intricate conspiracy.

Oh man, this subject takes me back. There were so many little conspiracy theories and myths associated with Halo 2 - it was the skulls, the skulls were such a little out of the way mystery that took a long time to unravel completely and it set everyone's young imagination into complete overdrive. I remember all of the stories about the civvie warthog and the tri-gates and the "Ghosts of Halo" - all with totally rational explanations but that wasn't the point - it was all campfire stories from people who mostly never been camping. In the woods, at least. It all crossed over nicely with the glitches and remnant assets left outside the maps, the superbounces - it was easy for kids to believe this stuff, to want to believe it just cause. At least I'm assuming it was mostly just kids believing in this stuff, I assume any adults are probably flat earthers by now.

@Generalkidd I have not seen it on the Halo MCC For pc. But on The original Halo 2 On "The great journey" there was a Button hovering in air. It was right before the scarab blows the doors down. Fly to the left with a sniper land on the Large island that has a barrier and zoom out with sniper. Forerunner Button is floating or sometimes it will be switched with a few Floating pylons from high charity.

Tris are better than 4 sided polygons/quads, and are interpolated easier. Quads can be warped If one vertex is raised/lowered at an extreme level and the shape of the poly gets messed up.
I remember back in the day knowing the lore and being obsessed with the secrets Halo 2 had. I remember hearing about the tri gate and finally trying tit out. Lemme tell you… when I saw it was just a backdrop I was fucking pissed ahahahhaha

For the trigate on Cairo Station an explanation could be that the bit of wall with the gate on it was using a different texture maybe to look like a vent or some other decoration but when things in the game were cut and assets were removed the texture for the wall may have been removed and possibly there was a system in place that would replace missing textures with other textures. In the classic Halo 2 version it may have defaulted to a wall texture but in Anniversary (possibly because of a different file structure) it defaulted to the texture of a door.
However because it's the first level of Halo 2 Anniversary 343 may have already been aware of the trigate mystery and so decided to make it a door texture on the gate as a reference to the mystery.

Have you ever done the Honey i shrunk the badguys glitch on Spartan Ops? I haven't seen it anywhere online at all... Basically on one of the missions theres a glitch in timing or something that shrinks down all bad guys to microscopic size except thier guns. Micro grunts. you can dupe equipment in halo 3 online, you can slow the fps online on sandtrao by driving the elephant onto the alien wreckage a certain way.

What if you have to get to the gate while in the same load/part of the level as the switch is in on Delta Halo? May have to be on foot but im 90% sure you can access the trigate without retracing your path...

there is a method where you use a green box and a rocket launcher, but with that method you cant get back in the map once you get the scarab gun

I went and had a look at this on Delta Halo when you melee it it makes a different noise to the other terrain around it and when you shoot (rocket launcher) at its like a green/yellow reminds me oft he flood. #conspiracytheory
