For some reason the elite always seems to favor the color pallete for the ultra variant when it spawns, and the helmet being messed up is due to using Shipmaster's face with the councilor helmet, which causes the textures to look distorted and stretched. You can see the two side by side at 5:07

It's probably because the armor is of the ultra honor guard. When you go down the elevators you see a dead one. So having the white honor guard armor is intentional.

It makes sense that the _dog version wouldn't exist in Gravemind either, I assume the "dogmatic" voice means they say all the typical religious lines as combat dialog, but by Gravemind the Elites are fighting against the prophets.
Can you do a video with Marines with Randomize parts, like the Johnson head and radio backpack? Also, can you replace enemies with Spartans, I used to do that on Halo Combat Evolved PC for the marines. Really entertaining!
They had to have known im sure though.... i mean the game goes through so much testing before launch im sure they noticed it and was like " Woah thats pretty cool." and decided to just leave it that way and see if years down the road someone would notice it lol
If you do research, you'd know they nuked most of their development on that E3 version of Halo 2. The lighting didn't work out for Bungie and the engine needed a huge overhaul. Massive amounts of story were cut. The Honour Guard Elite is one of the last enemies you fight after a huge slog through tons of Covenant forces. You witness an alien rebellion, take part in a jail break, and meet the Brutes, who will become the new enemies in the final levels. All this crazy, climactic stuff happened, so playtesters probably saw him after going through all this cool shit, said, "that's new, he looks really cool" and didn't bother taking any notes of it
You would think, but the development of this game was very fucked, I remember reading somewhere that this was supposed to be the end of halo. The ark and all that stuff from 3 was supposed to happen in 2.
Testers probably had the same reaction a lot of commenters did. Oh cool, a badass elite, that makes sense at this point in the game. Not at all obvious it's a bug or in error, so not reported. Very serendipitous.
I always thought it was, like, he was a counselor who had a younger brother who was an honor guard, and when the changing of the guard and The Great Scism occurred he was killed, and to mourn his loss he took all the aesthetic pieces and put it on his armour
Tbh I always thought it was supposed to be like that because of the narrative. I always found the idea extremely fitting and cool to show us an elite that wouldn't be encountered in standard missions, but you would be able to find on the Covenant capital of course. I'm really glad they made that mistake, the golden elite wouldn't have even the slightest "wow" factor
I have a question to explore, although I could just be wrong. In Halo CE, in the mission Keyes, I could've sworn that I saw the corpses of Elite Ultras. I think they appeared in the area with the grav lift going up into the ship. They may have been in the ship too. Maybe it's the lighting, but, they were DEFINITELY white, not Spec Ops.
I'll never forget my first time playing the mission when the Elite Councilor came running through the door with a sword, I was like What in the hell kind of Elite is that omg! And totally ran the other way out of pure fear and admiration of its badassery.
I had a mild fixation with this glitch character when I was in my early teens. I read the article on Halopedia explaining why the Honor Guard Councilor existed and I knew he was the result of a coding error, but nonetheless I wanted him to be some mysterious and unique Elite who was one of a kind and was the most bizarre and rare opponent in the game.
The halo OG encyclopaedia just calls that version of an elite a councillor lol, there there's is a honor guard ultra rank as well which is basically the same but has no councillor helm, sooo it was already fixed and explained... Like 10 years ago
He technically is because only a few can wear this armor it symbolizes the light they ascend to because of the glowing honor of them when they die; how do u get this armor you do anything and you are good at it.
Check out Imperial Admiral Xytan 'Jar Wattinree; he would have been the highest ranked elite (in the covenant military at least). Higher ranking than even Thel ‘Vadamee back when he was a Supreme Commander
Even though the Honor Guard Councilor was a glitch, I'm really glad that he became a thing as opposed to the original plan to feature a Zealot as the final enemy. Not only is the HGC cool and memorable, but the fact that he occurs as the final challenge, and specifically on the level Gravemind, feels so right. The entire Covenant has collapsed and all the species are fighting with each other. Who knows what anyone might do now that there's no order of any kind. An Elite might combine a bunch of random armor pieces or maybe the Councilor helmet belonged to his friend who was killed by a Brute so he stuck on his head to remember his buddy, or maybe he was a Councilor who killed an Honor Guard Brute and took his armor permutations as a trophy.
Playing this as a kid, this elite easily had the most presence when he came out alone like a badass towards you at the end. I used to call them Cobra Elites cause of the sick helmet lmao. Still my favourite variant.
Reminds me of the hologram glitch from reach forge. If you went into monitor form quick enough after sending out a hologram, it wouldn’t know what armor set to give the hologram model so it would be all white but with random armor permutations and even armor effects. That and the walking armor lock glitch were fun times.
It is not a typo since he typed the string identifier correctly, this is called a logic error. Code is correct and compiles, it runs but it does not do what we intended - or logic error in short.
I always loved the huge battle in this room, my favorite level from Halo 2 elevated by that area. I always thought it was just a badass councilor coming in to kill you and thought that was a great touch.
I always believed this guy to be a Councillor (the same elites that condemned the Arbiter) that decided that being genocided by the Brutes and the Master Chief was a bad idea. Guy always felt like a final boss to me due to having Zealot stats
The ad timing was perfect I was very interested as to how this character spawns and I just hear: “-has a character index of four, which corresponds to- SPICY. CHICKEN. NUGGETS.”
Interesting! I don't know if anyone noticed, but sometimes the Elite spawns as Half-Jaw (Shipmaster Vadum), and also in the original Halo 2, sometimes the Councilor helmet spawns in as a weird variant, as if the textures didn't load in right or something. Didn't know if anyone else caught this. Is the weird Councilor helmet a scrapped version?
I always thought he was one of the counselors from the first cutscene, maybe one who was in charge over all the honor guards. I thought he was the coolest elite.
Can you take a look at the rare death animation for marines on Halo 3 where they grab their throats while moving around on the floor before just dying? I remember seeing it when I was sniping marines on The Storm through their necks one day sometime before 2010.
In the level high charity there is a dead brute that has the same spawn issue, it’s a random selection of Tartarus and an honor guard brute, you can find its spawn after you light bridges over the mausoluem where the drones attack. After you leave and it gets dark and the flood spawn above you the brute spans dead next to other brutes
There was an error variant that actually is legit. The one with the honour guard pauldrons and ornamentals, white armour and regular helmet is actually known as an honour guard ultra or 'Light Of Sangheilios'
This is like the most perfect mistake ever. Not only is this unique one-of-a-kind mystery Elite the final enemy of the level, making him seem all the more like a mini boss, but he's on the level Gravemind, a level in which the Covenant is splitting apart at the seams and all the alien races are fighting each other. I always pictured in my head that the Honor Guard Councilor was an Elite who decided to put on the armor pieces of his Elite friends who got killed by the Brutes as a way to honor them.
personally i loved how and honor guard council elite showed up to me it just ment things are so bad that even the guys at the highest rank had to go back to the fronts but i had a bug either it was do to the copy of halo 2 i had or due to playing it on the 360 the bug was the honor guard ultra spawned in with three head types one being just a standard ultra elite head one with the councilor head and the last being the red honor guard head
I'm glad that this bug happened though. I like to put a story behind this guy: He was a high councilor who became an almost master chief-level hero during the Great Schism, taking the armour of his fallen elites and taking on this appearance while striking down brutes left and right, only to meet his end at the hands of master chief.
General Heed should really cover the Golden Hunters of ODST. Those always confused me cause I don't remember the Lekgolo ever having ranks in the Covenant, due to them being used as "Engineers" and heavy units. For those who don't know why I said "engineers", it's because if you look at the Scarab power cell, it's held in place by Lekgolo worms.
Oh WOW! Considering where we were and how he entered, I thought this was some Ultra High ranked Councillor senior to the rest. I always thought he was a cross between an Honour Gaurd and Ultra (Most senior Ultra Councillor) but never knew he was a mistake. Best mistake ever.
Can you make more videos like this to where it is spawning in different characters with the bipeds that they can't use in that mission. Like you were talking about with the Marines.
I am glad that this typo exists. Otherwise you would never have had the opportunity to fight against such a badass lookin elite. Council is my favorite armor typ anyway. thanks for the video
I don't know who needs to hear this but there is a glitch on the mission "Uprising" that allows you to get 2 extra elites to fight the brutes. When you kill the brutes in the first engagement if you push to the next checkpoint before the elites break out of their drop pods you can grenade jump up to where the panicking grunts are then run along the right wall until the next checkpoint is done. At this point the two silver elites should spawn with their active camo on. You then run back to the drop pods and the elites will only then be booting the doors off. The elites jumping out of the drop pods can glitch out after you spawn the extra two and just stand there but with grenades and melee you can push them towards the checkpoint which will fix their pathing and they will join the other elites. Doing this you can end up with 7 elites and 2 grunts to fight against the brutes with. Unfortunately there are only 5 needlers on this map so I couldnt live out my dream of a 9 needler team.
Thats unfortunate that this elite is considered a mistake or glitch. I always thought it was intentional to make this one seem like one of the most powerful enemies you'd face in the game. This one looks like it could make an Elite Zealot its bitch
So it was all a wrong input of a command that exists validly in other levels but in the Gravemind it's non-existent. Pretty cool and a fine informative video.
I always imagined him as the Honour Guard Commander. After all, Honour Guards with white armor exist and are called Lights Of Sanghelios, so why shouldn´t something like a Honour Guard Commander exist?
You all know the ultra honor guard is an actual rank, right? It is just not ever seen in gameplay alive, you can see them in the classic cutscene during the changing of the guard and dead earlier in the gravemind when you first see the covenant civil war
If you look at it closely you could see every part of those classes. Ultra, it is MIXED in with the head dress. Honor guard, the orange spikes that a jutting out, then the rest is just the counciler.
I got it on my first play through of the game. I thought it was supposed to be him but you see him in the next cutscene so I always thought it was a bug.
Honestly, although it's a mistake I'd like to see them make it cannon because this elite is super cool. Perhaps it could have its own unique special side story like how the spec ops elite that comes down the elevator to ambush you on the maw has one. Like, that could then explain why it's armour is mixed up like this
I always thought it was intentional since it was technically, at the time, meant to be the last Elite you would ever face. They aren’t in the high charity mission, and the last arbiter missions, the elites are your ally. Same for Halo 3.
Seeing how he appears so near the end of Gravemind, the last Chief level vs elites in the original trilogy, set in high charity during the great schism they could so easily retcon this in to the lore. Have it this guy was like the leader of the elite council, head of the covenant military or leader of the honour guard, basically the most badass, high ranking elite ever. Its cool that they admit its a mistake but it works so well they could easily make this lore and I think it would go down well.
Unfortunately I can’t look at the code but there are two colors used. One has Tan primary while the other has Steel. Unless it’s some weird shit that Halo 3 pulls off, I don’t see how there aren’t Stealth Minors & Majors. As for the Halo 3 shenanigans, there are lighter colored Elites & darker, for Minor & Major. Just play Covenant & take a look at your allied Elites
So is this like the weapon projectile glitch in halo 5? It's given an incompatible tag so tries to mash them together with interesting results so It looks that way. Idk though
Those Elites you spawned with johnson_dress weren't Honor Guard Councilors, that was Rtas (Shipmaster) with Honor Guard Ultra armor on. You can tell because the mandibles on the one side are chopped off :D
If Halo Infinite has elite playable characters and different armor customization, I would very much like that to be one of them, something else would be the Arbiter Armor, maybe Jul 'Mdama armor as well. Who knows something like, unlock them after beat the game on legendary difficulty, pre order, or such a prize for reaching the maximum level (152) of Halo 5: Guardians.
This video reminds me of a dead mest up brute on the mission high charity after you get past the drone nest and round a turn. Just like the elite is there a brute that doesn't exist in mission that causes it to look like a mix between a brute honnor gaurd and a brute minor?
I like it I think of it this way that Elite used to be an honor guard he fought many battles and when the civil war happened he saw his old armor and put it on

For those curious, the 'dog' part refers to 'dogmatic'
which compared to the great journey is pretty fitting
TMek42 not to be nit picky but I can’t help it in this case. No, he explained it’s someone’s initials. Unless you were joking
@@thatoneguy-tj5pc it says in assembly a little lower on one of the parts (sorry no time stamp) zealot - dogmatic or something similar
@@thatoneguy-tj5pc no, he explained the Zealot_scl was someone's initials. Dog is for dogmatic
When is the Johnson head with Radio backpack?
I always make my marines spartans, they have way better aim
All this crazy, climactic stuff happened, so playtesters probably saw him after going through all this cool shit, said, "that's new, he looks really cool" and didn't bother taking any notes of it
Yeah Halo 2 had a messy development
You would think, but the development of this game was very fucked, I remember reading somewhere that this was supposed to be the end of halo. The ark and all that stuff from 3 was supposed to happen in 2.
Dis Boi fr? Goddamn. Always thought that h3's campaign was short
Testers probably had the same reaction a lot of commenters did. Oh cool, a badass elite, that makes sense at this point in the game. Not at all obvious it's a bug or in error, so not reported. Very serendipitous.
*I am truly Honoured to watch this video*
*Sigh* Just..... Just yes.... XD
I always thought it was, like, he was a counselor who had a younger brother who was an honor guard, and when the changing of the guard and The Great Scism occurred he was killed, and to mourn his loss he took all the aesthetic pieces and put it on his armour
I always thought he was one of the highest ranking elites in the covenant
Funny how a glitch made an incredibly interesting character
@@alyssinclair8598 they should make him canon lol
5:50 I was expecting you to say that johnson_dress was Sgt Johnson in a tutu.
Gotta say, that Elite looks badass. Dark with glowly armor.
Is this what happened with the shipmaster/ combat/assault elites on the “Floodgate” in Halo 3?
Likely. Probably just randomized all the armours for those elites that they could to fill the place with bodies
A later video now confirms this! That mistake is a lot less cool though, breaks immersion when you recognize it.
Kalon Ohmstede I used to think it was this special elite that was not in any of the other games.
I swear I saw an imperial guard elite in Halo CE it was wearing black and yellow armour on the OG Xbox version
All the ultra elites in CE are dead
I've always wanted to be able to use the High Councilor cosmetic, and this blend of Councilor and Honor Guard is absolute perfection.
General Heed it's the Scooby Doo of the bugs, he always likes to solve the mysteries behind each bug. 👀👌
I know what the Elites like-being honored.
Damn I remember playing with you and Jski back in the day on Halo 3. Good to see you’re still do what you do
I'll never forget my first time playing the mission when the Elite Councilor came running through the door with a sword, I was like What in the hell kind of Elite is that omg! And totally ran the other way out of pure fear and admiration of its badassery.
So it is basically an exchange of hats.
oooooo thats cleaver
I had a mild fixation with this glitch character when I was in my early teens. I read the article on Halopedia explaining why the Honor Guard Councilor existed and I knew he was the result of a coding error, but nonetheless I wanted him to be some mysterious and unique Elite who was one of a kind and was the most bizarre and rare opponent in the game.
The halo OG encyclopaedia just calls that version of an elite a councillor lol, there there's is a honor guard ultra rank as well which is basically the same but has no councillor helm, sooo it was already fixed and explained... Like 10 years ago
I thought he was the leader of the elites back in the days, like the highest ranked of his specie.
He technically is because only a few can wear this armor it symbolizes the light they ascend to because of the glowing honor of them when they die; how do u get this armor you do anything and you are good at it.
Regular Old Plumbus Quality Fanfic.
Check out Imperial Admiral Xytan 'Jar Wattinree; he would have been the highest ranked elite (in the covenant military at least). Higher ranking than even Thel ‘Vadamee back when he was a Supreme Commander
@@jamesclarke6330 his armor looks similar actually
I always assumed it was like an Elite General who also had a position in politics.
The fact they even have anniversary version for him too.
Much love to you, and God bless
Man, this kind of stuff is one of the many reasons halo 2 has a very special place in my heart ❤️
The ad timing was perfect I was very interested as to how this character spawns and I just hear:
“-has a character index of four, which corresponds to- SPICY. CHICKEN. NUGGETS.”
Now I'm left wanting to see those crazy variants for the other units (Marines, grunts, etc)
Its happened to me too but on The Covenant.
It also happens on halo 2 as well
@@wilhelmferdinandiii7430 Yeah, I think it's a thing with Halo 3 marines across the entire game.
@@jtl5560 That's right! Although, I believe it's only a thing with Spartans in Multiplayer, right?
@@iBravoArbiter no it happened to marines too that's how I found out about that animation
I knew that the helmet would change often but I always interpreted it as just fighting a councilor at the end who’d decided to fight back.
You are the only person i know that explain and research the Halo series like this and i love you videos man
In the level high charity there is a dead brute that has the same spawn issue, it’s a random selection of Tartarus and an honor guard brute, you can find its spawn after you light bridges over the mausoluem where the drones attack. After you leave and it gets dark and the flood spawn above you the brute spans dead next to other brutes
I think it'd be really cool if you looked through all the versions of characters which come to pass when they aren't on that map.
Still the most badass looking elite there is. Wish there was more of them.
Bungie: Even our bugs are features
personally i loved how and honor guard council elite showed up to me it just ment things are so bad that even the guys at the highest rank had to go back to the fronts but i had a bug either it was do to the copy of halo 2 i had or due to playing it on the 360 the bug was the honor guard ultra spawned in with three head types one being just a standard ultra elite head one with the councilor head and the last being the red honor guard head
I always thought it was a counselor who put on honor guard armor as he was one of the last elites to lead the surviving elites in high charity.
Yeah i agree bro
I'm glad that this bug happened though. I like to put a story behind this guy: He was a high councilor who became an almost master chief-level hero during the Great Schism, taking the armour of his fallen elites and taking on this appearance while striking down brutes left and right, only to meet his end at the hands of master chief.
It is no mystery why the covenant get destroyed they have an army we have a chief
The Honour Guard Councillor is so much more interesting that a standard Zealot. I'm glad this error was made.
All these years later and I’m still learning things about this franchise
The armor especially on that one Honor Guard Councilor Ultra Elite looks really good on anniversary.
"Mistake"
More like best elite ever.
Some kind of Honor Guard representative on the Council. Headcanon.
Honor guard, the orange spikes that a jutting out, then the rest is just the counciler.
waitaminute
either im blind or that may be R'Tas' model used
I got it on my first play through of the game. I thought it was supposed to be him but you see him in the next cutscene so I always thought it was a bug.
Like a lot of folks here, I used to believe he was the highest ranking all elites on High Charity (Besides Arbiter)
Crazy I liked this type of elite since I was in elementary and I always called them honor guards. Didn’t know others liked him
Honestly, although it's a mistake I'd like to see them make it cannon because this elite is super cool.
That’s such a cool elite though my favorite elites are the honor guards
I just think of it as a elite who just scavenged supplies to keep himself alive
Seeing how he appears so near the end of Gravemind, the last Chief level vs elites in the original trilogy, set in high charity during the great schism they could so easily retcon this in to the lore.
Have it this guy was like the leader of the elite council, head of the covenant military or leader of the honour guard, basically the most badass, high ranking elite ever.
Its cool that they admit its a mistake but it works so well they could easily make this lore and I think it would go down well.
3:02 yes... nude
edit: Stealth Major?! which elite is that
The nude elite is the arbiter with no armor. The stealth major simply and elite major with active camo.
Stealth Major has Steel color while the minor has tan
@@bryannovelo5343 stealth major isnt really a major with camo, now i know how he looks like
@@Designation6 stealth majors don't exist. Just stealth elites. They wear steel color armor.
Given the level, it actually makes sense for a councilor to actually appear though, even if it was just by programming accident.
If Halo Infinite has elite playable characters and different armor customization, I would very much like that to be one of them, something else would be the Arbiter Armor, maybe Jul 'Mdama armor as well. Who knows something like, unlock them after beat the game on legendary difficulty, pre order, or such a prize for reaching the maximum level (152) of Halo 5: Guardians.
but like, they look so cool and there is no better mission for it to appear than gravemind. there should be lore for this guy, that would be sick
