  • I use this little tea-ball strainer thing to clean all kinds of small parts in acetone, alcohol, and other solvents. It also works as a grabber to retrieve parts that have fallen to the bottom of a jar.

great tip! until now I just tossed them and put a new cap on. graffiti stores sell caps for a few cents. also handy if you work with spraypaint. often the caps that the cans come with are not what you actually want for the given job. having a few different caps from slow/fine to wide/fast to these elongated ones is really nice.

That's a great point. I think I was put off by some of the graffiti paints like Montana because they really emphasize pigment load but not durability... but the caps and associated bits are actually a great idea and something I should explore more.

Omg, I'm so glad I seen this! I had bought a few cans of paint and even a huge can of spray adhesive for 50¢ in the "oops" section at Lowes or Home Depot... Most of them didn't have a cap and I thought well, I'll just look for one at home but some of them didn't fit. I had NO IDEA you could actually buy spray caps! Hopefully I can find one that fits AND I kept the cans, lol, I may have tossed a few getting annoyed that the ones I tried didn't fit right.
Right now I have 4 CANS of spray adhesive I can NOT get working. I've taken a little metal wire and tried that, but it didn't work great and just clogs up again quickly.
Also, would acetone nail polish remover work? That's actually the only kind I have at the moment, lol!

@@Em22-wtf I usually also keep the caps from empty cans for such situations. But I also had a few cans where the cap broke in a way the can was not repairable. :( For nailpolish remover and cleaning the nozzle: I’d expect it to work but have no personal experience. Robrenz recommended toluene for cleaning the nozzles of spray adhesive. Hope you get the cans working again!

In our workshop, we have the small atomizer 30ml (from Amazon) bottles filled with acetone. Take the nozzle off the aerosol paint can and put it on the atomizer bottle, couple of pumps and you're good to go.

Thank you for this tip, finally one that works for 3M adhesive canister spray. I tried several as this adhesive was very expensive and I used once wiping tip after use, next use=useless clogged. Your process was the only one that worked. Carol

Thank you for reporting back Carol! I, too, use it for spray glue. I also find that the old advice of "tip the can upside down and blow propellant thru the tip" doesn't work for spray glues at all.

Thank you. A lot of my "shop tips" are pretty out there because my work is unusual, but I use this one all the time (and for cleaning things other than paint caps, too)

It's also wise to turn the can upside down and and spray it to clear the nozzle after each use.

I have tried acetone to clear spray glue nozzles several times but to no avail. I will try washing up liquid next but am not holding my breath. Shame as these cans are so expensive and they are still full but won't spray.

Huh, it works well for the 3M adhesives I use. A next-level solvent would be methyl ethyl ketone. I wonder if you need an ultrasonic bath or to simply leave them in the solvent for a much longer time.

I haven't tried it, but other solvents may work. Acetone is my most used solvent in the shop.
