This album gets my vote for THE most underrated record of the 90s. I'm not sure there's a better debut album by anyone that decade, and IMO Joan's integrity's as an artist is enduring.
I saw her on this tour in a club ans she did some of this accapella. This was 28 years ago I think. I still get goosebumps I never ever understood how she didn't get more credit. It was one of the BEST performances I had ever seen. She was also very beautiful to my 25 year old self.
I agree, as well. I was old enough to appreciate it in 1996, & I think of it often. It's a masterpiece of a song. I do not love this video, however. It's not poorly done, but it robbed the song of a bit of its haunting mystery
I cannot express how much this song meant to me when it came out, I felt it deep in my soul, I FELT it. I was going thru the most horrible time of my life, and when this song came on the radio I blasted it, it took me to another level. The pain I felt in her voice, but also lingering hope. One of a few songs in my life to do this.
Relish is one of the greatest albums of all time !!! My favorite song is Pensacola. Almost 30 years later, and I still listen to the CD at least once a week.
Completely agree. I managed to talk a band I played in to cover it back in 1997, and even our just ok version blew people away. This song kicks it, especially when Joan does it. She is a true artist.
There’s a really powerful live version of this that she performed at a Pavarotti gala in the late 90s. Yes, Pavarotti! Worth searching for. Every song and story like a rosary…one of the great verses…
Listening to and singing this one for more than 20 years now. I always come back to this track. Her voice is so enchanting. This song has had a grip on me since the first time I ever heard it.
I was 14 and starting out my freshman year back in 96..Heard this song and loved it since.. Brings me back to then.. Not so good of memories then, however the music kept me sane!!:)
Same here, that voice is so good and i just love the video. She reminds me of my mum, getting up early before anyone else, working hard all day, never getting any appreciation. Then she died and we all realized how much we missed her, she was really the center of our lives.
I started collecting Cd's again and bought Relish today at a flea market. This used to be my favourite song from the album back in the 90's and still is
🇬🇷👍👏Many congratulations from Greece and specifically from my village Agios Konstantinos of Arfara messinia. You have a wonderful voice, I have been listening to you for years... I really like an old song titled:one of us
I always liked this song better than "One of Us", which got SO overplayed. I never even heard "St. Teresa" on the radio. I caught it on MTV2 randomly one day around '98 & loved it.
I never saw it play in pure form until RUclips came around. Before then, I saw one version aired on Pop-Up Videos on VH-1. But thankfully, the episode aired more than once.
Joan Osborne is one of my fav singers ... this album & song was a huge influence. I saw her the other day she was still amazing!!! I saw her in a small club upfront in Nashville. xoxo
"Relish" is on my to of 10 albums of all time, and i listen to an endless variety of genres from multiple decades, always on headphones, ... but this song! This song is something very special! Timeless Also, I am forever grateful to the drummer that played in it, because he was the first drummer that truly inspired me and influenced me to really try and get creative with less noise. And then be loud again only when it suits and serves the song.
Relish is definitely in my top 10 greatest Albums of all time. I rank it number 7 in my collection. Ms. Joan Osborne is my favorite female artist of all time.
This is the first time I watched the video despite the fact that I bought the album 1996. It's so beautifully made and videos nowaday are rubbish and unwatchabe. Love the 90's. Love St. Teresa. Love J. Osborne.
Screw anyone talking about her addiction on here blah blah blah. Take your own inventory. She was a genius artist and her life was dedicated to her raw talent for blues and torch songs that transcended genre. None of you can imagine singing in front of 100,000 people. She had intense insecurity about performing. I think she’s brilliant.
From a filming point of view there's something so detached and individual in the way she says goodbye and scanning the car up from the ground as she leaves. This was the work of a skilled director. It will always be my favorite Joan Osborne song. One of us is good. But this? Iconic !!
Just listened to this whole album for the first time. What a collection of diverse and catchy songs, all supported by crackerjack musicians. Too bad Joan didn’t immediately have a sophomore album that could’ve built on Relish. Her career didn’t get the wider breakthrough that it deserved.
Joan explained the video in her VH1 special: It's about a woman she knew who found legitimate work as a maid, but would always fall to the wayside due to her drug habit, and eventually turned to prostitution to survive. Joan said that despite her personal struggles, the woman always had a sunny attitude and held on to her Catholic upbringing. Joan started calling her "St. Teresa" as a result, and the nickname stuck. That's why the video contains religious iconism (lambs and levitation, the latter being the real St. Teresa's first miracle of sainthood), plus sexual references, as well as numerous drug references (grass carpet, body turning into flowers, heartbeat strawberry, etc).
I come from a Catholic background but I'm not sure what the significance of the strawberry is? Is it like the apple in Eden? Or do you just mean it's a symbol for the human heart?
According to CNN, the Vatican has announced that Mother Teresa will become a Saint, showing that Joan was about 19 years ahead on this one. Joan Osborne is an amazing talent. Love her music and performances.
+William Slater In 1999 I received the gift of rapture. My guardian angel, Jeremiah is who I believe did the work, my godmother the praying. One of my guardian angels bathed a book in dazzling light for me at the library, Expecting Adam by Martha Beck. She had an OBE too, just like mine, "My identity was lifted out of me." Later I borrowed a book on the writings of St. Teresa of Avila. I experienced what she did after reading about it, my spirit bouncing around inside of my body. At the time of my rapture I was spending 8 hours a day in prayer/meditation and was listening to a lot of Joan Osborne, her song ladder leads me to believe she's Pentecostal like I am, "I'm crackin' your little code I'm learnin' another language So full it's about to explode"My son Jason was born on All Hallows Eve, the next day being all saints day, and we have a cross on Mt. Rubidoux. My dad put it on the mountain with a USN rescue helicopter. Jason was born around the same time Fr. Junipero, the man the cross is named for, was beatified. He's now a Saint. You believe what you want my friend, faith and love conquers all.
Very underrated cd. Still good today. I received the cd as a birthday gift in 1996 by a former girlfriend. Wow!!! I listened to it so many time. A lot of great songs. Joan has a special voice too. She deserved better treatment. Recognized for One of us but there's, at least,5 or 6 very good song on it. Solid album. Boy times fly! 16 years ago!!!!
I remember buying the album Relish after watching this song on MTV. This was the first song on the album and used to crank up the volume whenever my parents were not around. Loved the entire album. Especially songs like Crazy baby, The man with a long black coat. Miss those days.
Relish is such an amazing album - I listened to it until the CD was so scratched it wouldn't play anymore. I have bipolar disorder, and Crazy Baby seems to describe that perfectly. Love Joan!
Caught a live version of this on cable and have not stopped loving this song Joan is a badass and thats it. Shes underrated and as long as i know shes there im kool.
Joan's BEST... in my opinion. Excellent video. I sure miss music videos and my vinyl records. I was the 1st Rock & Roll DJ in Dallas while everyone was at the discos.
I remember seeing this video on either MTV or VH1 in the mid-90s after "One of Us" had become so huge of a hit, and I think I heard it a few times on Top 40 radio, but sadly it never seemed to catch on like I hoped it would. It's a shame because it's a really great song and deserved to be heard more. Nonetheless, it's still a great 90s musical memory for me.
Reminds me of my first full time job at the Ramada Inn in Woburn, Massachusetts and how far I have come since then .... with the help of Sister Teresa at Rivier College : )
Hi. Did you have a professor for English named Dr. Brad Stull at Rivier? He was my camp counselor in Colorado for a few years. Before he moved to Chicago, before he got married. We were kids really although he was four years older than me. Nice person.
Oh, I so agree! I've done the same: the way that mandolin kicks in is like a soundtrack to your own movie, as you move into gear! Indeed as a one-time TV trailer-maker, I did exactly that using the music to open my trailer for "True Romance" - as Christian Slater's open car comes over an LA hill! Just perfect!
An amazing beautiful song.I totally get your message in this video.A true talent. We were partying last night and you had us all into conversation about what your video meant Very thought provoking. What a great night,Good friends,Great conversation,And Awesome music.Thank You Joan Osborne.I am more opt to say Blessed Be...)0(
This is one of my favorite songs! Artists like Joan from the 90's just have so much more passion in their art than the money-hungry attention hogs of today.
Qué bella canción. Tengo la sensación que cada vez que la escucho es más bonita, tiene tanto que decirle a mi alma. Gracias Joan por haber compartido esta gota cósmica con quien sepa apreciarla. Bendiciones 🙏 🍫☕🍪🥑🌚
This (album) mix is so much better than the 3-4 live recordings I just went through, as Joanie's voice is more forward, and the singular string instrument (mandolin?), than the live ones, which mishmashed everything into a sonic lump. Given the pathos of her voice here, that is some loss. Sheeesh. LOVE THIS.
I think it's a masterpiece on the scale of Gershwin and Rogers and Hammerstein. Easily the best on the album, it floods the mind and senses and, though I don't know for sure I suspect it registers the same in nearly every culture
How on earth did I miss you Joan? What the....? Lovin' this in a big time way as with your other stuff. Dang Joan, why didn't you tell me you were here?
Вещь! Помница, альбом этот её был в середине 90х заслушан до полнейшей, как тогда казалось, уже невозможности когда-либо вновь к нему вернуться. Completely Agree!
i was a teen when this album dropped and was obsessed with this song
Let's face it. Relish is freaking brilliant. Every single song on that album deserves praise. Relish should've gotten more love and recognition.
It's 2019 and I'm still loving it and recognizing it..

Yes, it should have.

Probably because of the contraverisial Teresa figure. She was a crook...
This entire album was amazing. It's a shame it didn't get more recognition and more airplay
I’ll join the club… THIS ALBUM WAS/IS SO UNDERRATED!!!
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life.
check out Sarah McLaughlin's " full of grace" I promise it will blow you away
So glad I'm not the only one who know exactly how epic Joan Osborne was/is.

Joan Osborne is EPIC!

This song popped into my head today after all these years. Higher than the moon!

Just saw her live two nights ago. This song was the highlight of my night. Bought relish in 1995, still have that same copy in my collection.
Yup. Me too. The best songs come back...
Relish is one of the greatest albums of all time !!! My favorite song is Pensacola. Almost 30 years later, and I still listen to the CD at least once a week.
Joan Osborne is a wonderful singer, and it’s a shame that she didn’t get as much recognition as Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan or Natalie Imbruglia.
Absolutely agree!
Natalie Imbruglia only had one hit.
@@gulioricci7052So did Shawn Colvin.
This song is so underrated. Loved the live version she did with Melissa Ethridge back in the mid 90s.
This is the song that stuck with me from that album. Timeless.
Yes, I thought it was the best song on the CD when I first listened to the whole thing, even if it's not the most famous one on there.

One of my favorite albums since the day it was released. Love it to this day just as much.
She truly is/was gorgeous. Also a great singer talent.
so beautiful and so intense
I really wish we would hear more of Miss Osborne on the radio. Truly a rare talent with an energy and delivery rarely matched.
