I truly believe Sarah is one of those rare singers whose voice is so ethereal, it floats. Rarely do I hear a vocal so delicate and fragile; it seems to want to float away and leave this mortal coil, of its own volition. But underneath the delicacy is a tense, steely strength; flinty, determined. The vocals are delicate, but the lyrics and musical underpinning are so...ugly, raw, messy, uncomfortable. This juxtaposition of the delicate with the ugly is what makes the song work. And it's a winner.
I mean, she can sing, eh? I love how she took her stalker's words and turned them back on him. She refused to be bullied. She's made of stronger stuff than that. Haunting song by an incredible singer.

Hard to disagree with that although she's had so many great songs. My personal favorite is her version of Joni Mitchell's song "River". Check out Sarah's version on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno recorded a few years ago. My favorite.... but Possession is a close 2nd. :)
This video is directly flawlessly and exemplifies everything that was cool about the medium in its 90s peak: cinema level production quality juxtaposed with distorted footage...plus a cohesive, tight band fronted by a confident, empowered, classy and talented young woman. I grew up in the 90s dreaming of being a music video director and this is one of the rare videos where I wouldn't have changed a single frame myself if I could have. A beautiful piece of work.
It's from an age when they had the money for physical sets, a crane, actual lighting, a crew etc, a budget, but there was enough creative leeway to use Super-8 and deliberately mess with the film stock. And they were willing to spend that money on someone who wasn't an obvious commercial blockbuster.
Man I remember when she opened up with this song on the first LF tour.... I rushed the stage through a sea of 30,000 people from the lawn. I had a camera, got a shot, an I'll never forget that moment in time. Thank you
Something how she took a negative situation (Stalker) and turned it into a positive ( Beautiful music), Then again that's Sarah would you expect any less?
I think there were actually two stalkers if I remember correctly. You only really hear about the one because he sued her over the lyrics of Possession and then committed suicide.
Still this my favorite song to this day. When I deployed to Turkey and lived in a tent for 6 months in 1998, I played this album every night as I went to sleep.
There is something divine and powerful in her presentation. She is like a goddess of unrequited love, a siren of broken hearts which reconstitute and beat anew to her haunting lyrics.
Probably my favorite song from the 1990's, and one of my top 5 favorite albums of that era. When it first came out I used to listen to it over and over while pulling all-nighters at my software company.

I love this song! I know she said it was a combination of creepy fan mail that created the song but Sarah turned it into something beautiful and artistic.

We were just teenagers in early-mid 90s with such powerful, meaningful, lasting music. But even as a 17 year old in fall 1994, I knew it wouldn't last. The magic
I heard this song today on the radio after not hearing it for several years. Realized why it was a favorite of mine, and why I loved Sars's music. And God, she was so beautiful in those days.
The first time I heard this-Summer of '94-It was the most amazing song I had ever heard. I was almost afraid to hear it again, afraid that with so much time elapsed, it wouldn't retain that power. It still gives me goosebumps.
Yes! I had just been to the Pink Floyd concert, Division Bell, and this song played on the radio! I literally forgot how great the Pink Floyd concert was!
It just occurred to me, thirty years hence, that Sarah might be a secret goth-rocker -- so many of her songs explore dark subject matter, or the dark side of the human condition, but that immaculate voice of hers brightens the mood of the given song to the point that you're not paying attention to the darkness in the lyrics
i honestly dont care why she wrote it. This song empowered me and im thanful for the strength i harnessed from it. i listen to it whenever i need a power surge. and it does the job perfectly! 😉
I literally stop listening to her when I was younger because it always made me cry. Almost all of her songs have that impact on me. Love her though and til this day I still might cry a little. ❤❤❤
I saw Sarah at the Berkeley Greek when all of her band’s instruments got lost in transit to the show. A local music shop lent a few instruments. She, and her band, are so talented that that show remains the one which touched my soul like no other could. Literally enchanting. Just amazing. I’ll never forget the afternoon. Thank you Sarah.
I know the backstory but you can make of this song what you will. My mind applies it a little differently than what it was written about. I was with a woman that was the world to me for 15 years, this speaks to me of the obsession I felt for her and how I can never let myself hold someone that deeply in my heart again.
I can somewhat relate to this. My husband left me for another man after 12 years quite abruptly and it’s been very trying and scary for me: what will happen to me now?? So the passage “into this night I wander, it’s morning that I dread. Another day unknowing of the path I fear to tread.” There’s very subtle high pitched background vox in that passage that I wish were more prominent in the mix.
I've been searching for this song all morning, The only word I could remember is "Kiss". Did you know that out of all of the "Top 100 songs from the 90's" lists that I've poured through all morning, Sarah McLachlan wasn't even listed once, WTF? I never would have found it if I hadn't suddenly remembered the rest "kiss...you so hard, i'll take your breath away". She's totally underrated. why isn't she on the top 90's song lists?
+Admiralty86 yeah bro she really was/is underrated in all of her songs...but if you want the best from her, listen to her album Mirror Ball...about 80% of her songs on that album are exquisite.
Unfortunately, her 2 biggest international hits were the somewhat forgettable "Adia" and "hear it at every funeral on the planet" song "Angel". The material before and after were superior, but did not catch the mainstream ear. Honestly, my area has a radio station that still plays "Sweet Surrender" once a day... and it didn't even crack the Top 20. I never hear the other two.

I still remember where I was when I first heard this song. I was working in a hospital that had a tv in each patient room that had music vids playing and this came on and I was mesmerized. Great tune. No one has a voice like hers.
i first saw this video in 1992 or 1993 on Austin, TX public TV. i was in the NAVY and shortly went on to meet the love of my life whom I introduced Sarah to. we had a couple of good years and Sarah's music shaped us. nevertheless, we didn't last but Sarah's music always brings me back to that love once shared. thank you.

September 2022, I'm 46. Still madly in love with this song... Gosh!!!!!
"Possession" Sarah McLachlan
Listen as the wind blows
From across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning
Memories trapped in time
The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied
Chorus:
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word
To find the truth enslaved
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
You speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath
Your words keep me alive
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes, dear
Into this night I wander
It's morning that I dread
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread
Oh, into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
I'll hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes

Sarah's best song
Crystal it’s my fav by far, and she is way underrated.
This is the first song by Sarah I remember hearing on the radio when I was maybe 12
Hard to disagree with that although she's had so many great songs. My personal favorite is her version of Joni Mitchell's song "River". Check out Sarah's version on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno recorded a few years ago. My favorite.... but Possession is a close 2nd. :)
This & building a mystery, are my faves...
Crystal one of best songs of THE 90s. (....which basically means OF alltime. )
This is maybe the most 90s video ever made no joke
Man
I remember when she opened up with this song on the first LF tour....
+Bill B. This song could be about a love lost by stalker, just plain circumstances. Heart knows no boundaries but we are bound by them
Learning the backstory to this song was a major paradigm shift for me.. life is a wild ride
I never knew the backstory either! I always assumed it was an impassioned lovers song and dedicated it to my husband 😟
00 00 hell yah...
I'm glad to say I grew up in the 90's. nothing will ever come close to some of the great music that came out in that decade.
word.
90 were good but, the eighties were something else.
jeff cordova Shoot check out the 80's!
Are you joking, obviously you've not had the foresight to listen to the music of the 60's or 70''s.
Except for the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, the 2000s and today.
Still this my favorite song to this day. When I deployed to Turkey and lived in a tent for 6 months in 1998, I played this album every night as I went to sleep.
Smiles, hi Jen 🌺😊
There is something divine and powerful in her presentation. She is like a goddess of unrequited love, a siren of broken hearts which reconstitute and beat anew to her haunting lyrics.
Probably my favorite song from the 1990's, and one of my top 5 favorite albums of that era. When it first came out I used to listen to it over and over while pulling all-nighters at my software company.
Wrote many a college papers listening to her when MTV actually played music videos. The entire album is golden.
They don't make music like this anymore. Some ethereal and magical quality that modern songs fail to capture.
I'm 35 now but when I used to play Sarah on repeat. Songs like, Adia, Angel, Building a mystery etc. I did this when I was 11 - 15, while playing the Sims, she's so talented and even an 11 year male knew it TY SARAH ##good times
Adele was not around when you were 11
Man I miss the 90s n early 2000s!!!! Best of everything!!!!
Whoever played and composed the Bass on this song deserves a nobel prize.
Wow...you must be easily impressed....???
Bass is nice...
Yo bro, I totally agree with you. I remember this song when I use to be in middle school, and the bassline always did a number on me! Happy Thanksgiving bro!
Nobel There is no Nobel prize for music.
Totally agree
The 1990s at it's most brooding, and solemnly beautiful..."TRAPPED IN TIME..."
So many of these great 90s songs felt so mystical and New Age-y, especially the ones sung by women. Anyone else make that association?
Yep
There were men who also did it, but fewer of them, and all of them amazing.
People forget that the 90s was a very spiritual time; remember the global obsession with angels???
@@JoeyMisanthropy Can you please give me some songs from male artists with this vibe? I want to make a playlist 🤍
Definitely. 💙
The 247 people who gave this a thumbs down are playing this on repeat and crying alone.
Now 480 as of 1/29/18
Or stalking someone...☹😯😬
Damn, man, that's...
That's Really harsh.
Her stalker produced her best song by far & one my tp30 favs songs ever
She should be stalked more often then

This song is magic on an album that’s a masterpiece!
Thank you Due South for bringing Sarah McLachlan into my life. This is probably one of the best songs ever written and performed. Love both this version and the piano one.
Finally Someone Telling The Truth About Where They First Heard This Song From The TV Series "Due South" from South Louisiana.
I love this song! I know she said it was a combination of creepy fan mail that created the song but Sarah turned it into something beautiful and artistic.
she turned it into Sanity and forgiveness that s amazing song ...but yes gave it an artistic insight that is Angelic and kind
As sultry as a hot bath on cold night. * Let's give credit as well to the band, backup singer, and those who made the set, and did the recording and editing. Bravo!
This song gives me chills and brings me back so vividly to a place!!
I’ve never met you but yet I’m here and there with you in that magical place 😊😊
fell in love with a man who broke my heart this song reminds me of a time when i had my last dance at youth, now the days are cold and i smile and a tear falls hearing this x
I can't even count the number of CD copies of 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' I have bought over the last 25 years. Lost...stolen...borrowed-not-returned...sun-damaged...somebody sat on it (yep!)...scratched...cracked...stuck in CD player...
It is one of the very few albums I ALWAYS replaced.
"Borrowed not returned"- that's a crime.
@@fromthehaven94 Lol, can't really blame them!
a SONG that cutes right through your SOUL ! A pain that tears part of your soul away forever . l
omg i still love this song as much as i did when i was younger
+Randy M b
Anushka Khoorban I definitely did as kid. radio stations were so worth listening to then. such talent everywhere!
Antoine Miller .meee three !
Anushka Khoorban agreed💗
This song makes me melt.... and I'm a big bearded dude!
😂
⛦ I like this song despite the singer being an old hag
As it should.
@@SUGAR_XYLER She's not an old hag in any way. Look up her recent photos and you'll see she's still gorgeous! Which is more than I can say for these plastic bitches that make so much noise in the media and social media!
I know this song because of my dad! Hell yeah.
I was in highschool when I discovered her 22yrs later I'm about to be 43 and she still haunts my soul Sarah come back you are pure talent thanks for the many great songs
I just love this bassline.
I miss music like this! Hauntingly beautiful
I use to listen to her for sleeping as well as Evanescence for a good sleep and interesting dreamscape.
She's right up there with the very best female music artists of all time i.e. Annie Lennox, Madonna, Marie Fredriksson, Björk, the Wilson sisters from Heart, Pat Benatar, and a few others.
This whole album musical , lyrical , vocal perfection!
This song was my introduction to Sarah Mclaughlin back in 1995. My favorite song by Sarah. I played it on repeat for hours.
We were just teenagers in early-mid 90s with such powerful, meaningful, lasting music.
But even as a 17 year old in fall 1994, I knew it wouldn't last. The magic
I still think of the Victoria's Secret episodes of Due South. It has that lost, melancholy sound. Great music.
I love her backup singers voice. They blend together so effortlessly. I wonder who she is, if she performs on her own.
I think the backup vocals are her. A separate recording of her voice played at the same time. Truly beautiful
That’s Camille Henderson
@@andrewpmalethank you!
Due south made me first listen to this song I've been a fan ever since. So beautiful thank you Sarah
coming from a metal head:-) Sarah kicks ASS!
I definately hear you brother!!! you can't help but like this song it's amazing!! The production is fantastic.
Will Moats you'd probably like the Smile Empty Soul version, too
Using your stalker's love letters in a love song reminds me of using a picture of your bandmate's blown out brains as an album cover. Metal as fvck
same bro, I'm here after the Evans Blue cover of this song
\m/(>_
This banger was LIT growing up in the 90's. ❤
I heard this song today on the radio after not hearing it for several years. Realized why it was a favorite of mine, and why I loved Sars's music. And God, she was so beautiful in those days.
I would fall asleep to this song an repeat on my cd player. I love it still to this day. This song is a vibe for sure.
Smiles, hi Michelle 🌺😊
Something has always mesmerized me about Sarah. To this day she is as beautiful in mind, body and spiritually as any singer I've ever heard.
Hearing this song live in 2013 was one of the best concert experiences ever--the end lifted me out of my seat...
I literally stop listening to her when I was younger because it always made me cry. Almost all of her songs have that impact on me. Love her though and til this day I still might cry a little. ❤❤❤
I don’t have the words to how good this song and album is …
I saw Sarah at the Berkeley Greek when all of her band’s instruments got lost in transit to the show. A local music shop lent a few instruments. She, and her band, are so talented that that show remains the one which touched my soul like no other could. Literally enchanting. Just amazing. I’ll never forget the afternoon. Thank you Sarah.
What year was the concert?
I know the backstory but you can make of this song what you will. My mind applies it a little differently than what it was written about. I was with a woman that was the world to me for 15 years, this speaks to me of the obsession I felt for her and how I can never let myself hold someone that deeply in my heart again.
I can somewhat relate to this. My husband left me for another man after 12 years quite abruptly and it’s been very trying and scary for me: what will happen to me now??
So the passage “into this night I wander, it’s morning that I dread. Another day unknowing of the path I fear to tread.”
There’s very subtle high pitched background vox in that passage that I wish were more prominent in the mix.
Darkskills7 That's also how I felt about Counting Crows album "August & Everything After". 80% of it is incredible.
Believe me you couldn't go anywhere without hearing this album in 1995. Sarah had her extremely well deserved day.
"kisses so hard"
Unfortunately, her 2 biggest international hits were the somewhat forgettable "Adia" and "hear it at every funeral on the planet" song "Angel". The material before and after were superior, but did not catch the mainstream ear. Honestly, my area has a radio station that still plays "Sweet Surrender" once a day... and it didn't even crack the Top 20. I never hear the other two.
Sarah embodies all the beauty of the Goddess Lakshmi along with the poeticism and grace of the Goddess Saraswati. So amazingly blessed by Lord Vishnu! 🐚🙏!❤
Man! That is some cool music!
Love this song.
This and Estranged are 2 masterpieces from 1993 💖💖💖
She even plays the organ wonderfully.
f' really tho
The 90,,s rule period best decade of experience and being a young adult how I truly appreciated those days I f being a part of it all cheers to all of you out there keep dreaming and reaching for better ways to just enjoy life while you are young 😞😭.
I love the subtle side glances, it makes you feel like she's singing to just you.
I used to date this drummer. He never heard of her so I put the CD on. Not only did he like it but he instantly recognized who the drummer is. He was a savant that way. He was right, btw. Definitely in my top 3 best albums
Damn I forgot just HOW F’ing BEAUTIFUL this song (still) is 💜🤘💜
I still remember where I was when I first heard this song. I was working in a hospital that had a tv in each patient room that had music vids playing and this came on and I was mesmerized. Great tune. No one has a voice like hers.
i first saw this video in 1992 or 1993 on Austin, TX public TV. i was in the NAVY and shortly went on to meet the love of my life whom I introduced Sarah to. we had a couple of good years and Sarah's music shaped us. nevertheless, we didn't last but Sarah's music always brings me back to that love once shared.
thank you.
Of all the songs, of all the music videos performed by #SarahMcLachlan, “Possession” always uplifts my spirits every Springtime! Specifically during my second year in high school in 1993-94, I suffered through setbacks and losses when I was at the low point of my life.
