Lyrics:
Listen as the wind blows from across the great divide
voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time
the night is my companion, and solitude my guide
would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?
and I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear
Through this world I've stumbled
so many times betrayed
trying to find an honest word to find
the truth enslaved
oh you speak to me in riddles
and you speak to me in rhymes
my body aches to breathe your breath
your words keep me alive - Видеоклипы
I feel bad for the younger folks that think she's just the sad dog lady.
Damn skippy!! 😂
Lol
She could be the "sad keyboard player lady" as the song Angel was written about the death by heroin overdose of Smashing Pumpkins keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin.
😂 That was super hilarious!
Omg ur comment is everything 😂😂
The 14 year old in me was never the same after this album was released. I'm 42 now and this song still hits me hard.
Holy Cow, me too! I'll be 42 this year, and I still think she is one of the sexiest women alive! 😋
💗💗💖💕💛
Same, friend! 42 sure got her quick ! Lol
I don't know the album but I DAMN sure know this song...and I'm 48. Still an all time great wong. Tears are rolling right now as I hear it, even tho the song has been in my phones for the longest. lol. I just decided to take a trip down video menory lane.
Damn I miss 94 and the whole 90s actually.
The fact she used her stalkers words and wrote an absolutely hit song with it is just pure genius.... One of the best the 90s had to offer for sure. God I miss those years. It's a vibe you had to Feel to even begin to understand...... No words.
I miss the 90s but they are a hallucination that became reality. It's all maya an illusion. Oh well whatever. Nevermind.
@@matthewscott5450 what?
Maya is Sanskrit for illusion. Possession of another being is nothing but the great illusion of Maya, fueled by the obsessive desire of control that can be found in energetic forces of the Vedic mythic Rahu (demon or asura).
Actually, she didn't use their words. One of them tried to sue her because the song was inspired by the letters she received from more than one stalker. It didn't turn out too well for him, he committed suicide.
@@TUSK1157 then apparently the stalker got possessed. Karma is a bitch
God, I miss the 90s.
Can we please go back to those days?
The harmonizing "Ill take your breath away" is hauntingly beautiful.
Yes!
Yes! I remember that line and the melody. It used to break my heart.
Considering she's an Aquarius, an air sign, that says alot more than people may realize.
Esse aqui agora
It’s so beautiful yet it was based on a stalkers letter which is unnerving
This whole album meant everything to my 24 year old self when it came out.
I can say the same as a 25 year old. So crazy, so long ago. Memories.
A masterpiece. Even after 5000 times.
This and Estranged are the masterpieces of 1993 💖
You mean 50000000000000000000

Since 1993
I mean, she can sing, eh? I love how she took her stalker's words and turned them back on him. She refused to be bullied. She's made of stronger stuff than that. Haunting song by an incredible singer.
I knew there was something off about a WOMAN saying they would "hold someone down and kiss them so hard" then "wipe away the tears". That was weird to me now I know why
Oh yeah. So effective that her stalker took his life after he heard the song.
Wow! I had no idea. Crazy
@@sirbandit170 After he tried to sue her for an insane copyright infringement claim.
She is a bad ass
The instrumentals for this song is so mystical and enchanting. Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Sheryl Crow and the female artists during the 90s didn't make music, they created magic
And compare it to what shit is on the radio today.
I add Shirley Manson (from "Garbage") to that great list. ❤️

So many of these great 90s songs felt so mystical and New Age-y, especially the ones sung by women. Anyone else make that association?
Yep
There were men who also did it, but fewer of them, and all of them amazing.
People forget that the 90s was a very spiritual time; remember the global obsession with angels???
@@JoeyMisanthropy Can you please give me some songs from male artists with this vibe? I want to make a playlist 🤍

A lot of people had this song as their love song or wedding song without knowing why she wrote it. If you know you know. Damn good song
I heard the stalker took her to court over her using his words. I think it was just his way to see her more.
Yup,agreed
I don’t see a problem with that.
I know people interpret songs differently, a different meaning for a different person. It’s too bad some people use this as a wedding song. That’s why, if I ever get married, I’m using Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden.

Absolutely. High five!
I miss the 90s so bad myself. I was driving to Boulder in my Buddy's borrowed maroon Cadillac to go skiing with my kids when this song arrived. I bought the CD and listened to it over and over for the whole trip. Particularly remember driving through the corner of New Mexico looking at starry sky. I'm 65 now and still not bored but certainly miss that time in my life. I keep waiting for another tidal wave of life to happen like the 90s.
1993 was the worst year of my life! i lost half of my soul. it was robbed from me...
@@theresaw8525 who took it

I truly believe Sarah is one of those rare singers whose voice is so ethereal, it floats. Rarely do I hear a vocal so delicate and fragile; it seems to want to float away and leave this mortal coil, of its own volition. But underneath the delicacy is a tense, steely strength; flinty, determined. The vocals are delicate, but the lyrics and musical underpinning are so...ugly, raw, messy, uncomfortable. This juxtaposition of the delicate with the ugly is what makes the song work. And it's a winner.
I'm impressed by your writing style. Captured the artist so perfectly too.
Wow 😳 I like how you can work the words.
What is it with Canadian female vocalists... Alanis Morissette is another, similar to Sarah, with a similar juxtaposition in her voice.
Pinned it 🤍
Add that to her physical beauty, there's nowhere this voice can't take you.
This takes me back to a very specific time in the 90s
Yep, I bought the CD back then too. One of my faves!!
Absolutely one of the top music icons of the 1990s. There were soo many great female vocalists in that decade who were "surfacing" . Sarah is definitely one of the most memorable. Simply stunning 🎶
25 year later, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy remains my favorite album of all time
Its definitely my favorite one by her.

First heard this beautiful song in Due South many years ago. It made such an impression it never ever left me. It took me ages to find out who did it. What an artist. What talent. Her songs are stunning!
She had several songs in several different episodes of season 1.
What I love, is that she took something frightening, and turned it into an eternal hit.. That's talent!! Blessed be 💜
"Another day of knowing of the path I fear to tread"
= the infinite ingenuity of Sarah McLachlan and only Sarah McLachlan
Forgive me for being garrulous but today when I was walking through Sears, I heard this song for the first time since I listened to Z100 back in the 5th grade (1994). Somehow, I _completely forgot_ this song existed over the past 20 years, but when I heard it again today I stayed in the store until it was over and then I realized that my breathing had slowed the entire time. Obviously, this song had an tremendous impact on the young me (and I was by no means a "soft" 5th grader; being Hispanic, into hardcore music, and from Brooklyn), since hearing it brought me *right back* to my childhood in such a visceral way.
It's so chilling, so beautiful, and downright _fascinating_ that a great song like this can do that to a man, even after 20 years.
This is the beautiful experience of music.
Corey, you just took me BACK. I spent '94 listening to Z100, usually at night when I was supposed to be sleeping, often recording my fave songs (like this one!) onto mixtapes of randomness. Those mixtapes contain so many feels.
I have always loved this song but forgot about it also. I actually thought about her song Adia and wanted to hear it. I saw this song mentioned as well and was like oh yeahhhh. Good times and good memories. Lol I have also stayed in a store listening to a good song. I don't like when they interrupt it with their in store communications lol.
I grew up to Z100. Man I wish they'd just play music from our childhood again and not current "music", which even kids of today hate.

I am
Sarah's best song
Crystal it’s my fav by far, and she is way underrated.
This is the first song by Sarah I remember hearing on the radio when I was maybe 12
Hard to disagree with that although she's had so many great songs. My personal favorite is her version of Joni Mitchell's song "River". Check out Sarah's version on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno recorded a few years ago. My favorite.... but Possession is a close 2nd. :)
This & building a mystery, are my faves...
Crystal one of best songs of THE 90s. (....which basically means OF alltime. )
Still this my favorite song to this day. When I deployed to Turkey and lived in a tent for 6 months in 1998, I played this album every night as I went to sleep.

this song reminds me of the movies the Craft and Practical Magic. The female vibration of the 90s was distinct. Nothing like today.
This song used direct phrases from her stalker's love letters. That's the point of the song. He sued her for royalties and killed himself before it went to trial.
He probably couldn't stand to hear her sing the words and have it blasted around the world.
This is, indeed, one of the darkest songs recorded... but not for the reason you think.
Looking past the theme of this song and talking strictly about this sound, I agree with the original post and it reminding of movies like The Craft and Practical Magic. In fact, this song was suggested to me by RUclips because I was listening to Stormwinds, which is a song by Fairuza Balk who played Nancy in The Craft (btw check out that song. I had no idea until recently she did music!!). I HATE it that this kind of music has fallen out of fashion.

I still think of the Victoria's Secret episodes of Due South. It has that lost, melancholy sound. Great music.
This video is directly flawlessly and exemplifies everything that was cool about the medium in its 90s peak: cinema level production quality juxtaposed with distorted footage...plus a cohesive, tight band fronted by a confident, empowered, classy and talented young woman. I grew up in the 90s dreaming of being a music video director and this is one of the rare videos where I wouldn't have changed a single frame myself if I could have. A beautiful piece of work.
It's from an age when they had the money for physical sets, a crane, actual lighting, a crew etc, a budget, but there was enough creative leeway to use Super-8 and deliberately mess with the film stock. And they were willing to spend that money on someone who wasn't an obvious commercial blockbuster.
This is maybe the most 90s video ever made no joke
There is something divine and powerful in her presentation. She is like a goddess of unrequited love, a siren of broken hearts which reconstitute and beat anew to her haunting lyrics.
This song gives me chills and brings me back so vividly to a place!!

+Admiralty86 yeah bro she really was/is underrated in all of her songs...but if you want the best from her, listen to her album Mirror Ball...about 80% of her songs on that album are exquisite.

Believe me you couldn't go anywhere without hearing this album in 1995. Sarah had her extremely well deserved day.

Unfortunately, her 2 biggest international hits were the somewhat forgettable "Adia" and "hear it at every funeral on the planet" song "Angel". The material before and after were superior, but did not catch the mainstream ear. Honestly, my area has a radio station that still plays "Sweet Surrender" once a day... and it didn't even crack the Top 20. I never hear the other two.

I know the backstory but you can make of this song what you will. My mind applies it a little differently than what it was written about. I was with a woman that was the world to me for 15 years, this speaks to me of the obsession I felt for her and how I can never let myself hold someone that deeply in my heart again.
I can somewhat relate to this. My husband left me for another man after 12 years quite abruptly and it’s been very trying and scary for me: what will happen to me now??
So the passage “into this night I wander, it’s morning that I dread. Another day unknowing of the path I fear to tread.”
There’s very subtle high pitched background vox in that passage that I wish were more prominent in the mix.
Haunting
......then YOU get it
daniel adrian Yeah, when you know what the song is about, then the lyrics are actually pretty chilling:
And I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after, I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes, dear.
Good description.
ABQSentinel some fan of hers was obsessed with her and wrote her love letters, I think she was actually being nice to him by writing this, that's why they are the stars they are, they will do something like that but he then wanted the money for the songs, because she used words from his letters, yikes. So he kills himself in remorse for betraying something that beautiful, she writes the guy a song. Incredible story if it's true.
I think the song has other meanings though, genius meanings.
Yes the story is true
" Your words keep me alive" dang that's exactly how I feel about my special lady.
You do realize it's her view of what her staulker/rapist did you her?
This song was my introduction to Sarah Mclaughlin back in 1995. My favorite song by Sarah. I played it on repeat for hours.
As sultry as a hot bath on cold night. * Let's give credit as well to the band, backup singer, and those who made the set, and did the recording and editing. Bravo!

"Possession" Sarah McLachlan
Listen as the wind blows
From across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning
Memories trapped in time
The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied
Chorus:
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word
To find the truth enslaved
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
You speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath
Your words keep me alive
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes, dear
Into this night I wander
It's morning that I dread
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread
Oh, into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd, wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
I'll hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes

I still remember where I was when I first heard this song. I was working in a hospital that had a tv in each patient room that had music vids playing and this came on and I was mesmerized. Great tune. No one has a voice like hers.
I love the dark vibe to this song
This song is pure, brilliant magic. No matter what is going on when i hear it, i have to stop and listen. It just encompasses so many things: power, strength, subtlety, beauty, desire, and the passions that rise to the surface when you are truly, deeply, committed (or obsessed, as it turned out) to anither person. It's gorgeous, sonic witchcraft in a way. Every part of the song wraps itself around you almost physically to make you a part of it, and its almost indescribable. I know it's about her stalker(s?) and is kind of terrifying for that, yet somehow can also be interpreted as someone with pure devotion in their heart. It really does take one's breath away.
Sarah makes me feel so young!
My wife and I saw her last tour. Indescribably beautiful music!
One of the best live artists I’ve ever seen

We saw it too, it was magically beautiful,
I first heard this song in Due South. And it got me hooked on Sarah.
Hecatedevotee2009 me too. I recently rewatched the entire series. A great show and song.
I LOVED that show. Gawd I miss good tv like that and songs like this.
Me too! Takes me right back to the 90s.
This song is so genius. Listening to it growing up I always thought there was something behind the lyrics. It was written by a stalker to Sarah. The way she sings it back is kind of haunting and almost satirical. The fact he killed himself after trying to sue her makes it even more tragic/ethereal.
It's really well-written. It starts off innocently enough until the chorus, which is creepy at first - it has a Taxi Driver quality - and gets more sinister every time it repeats. But the music is so defiant it comes across as a giant, sarcastic middle finger, and it has a neat tune as well. It's one of those classic "it sounds innocuous until you focus on the lyrics" songs, like Every Breath I Take or Oliver's Army.
I think she missed out on some excellent love making with this mentally ill man. 😅
TRUE ARTIST regardless of genre make the world a better place to live! Thank You, Sarah M.
Folks who like this song might like another haunting piece, "Bury My Lovely" by October Project. OP was even an opening act for Sarah McLachlan. Bury My Lovely came out in '93 and the video gives me shivers to this day.
October Project, another brilliant music act.
