    That Kale looks more like Spinach to me! 😉
    I tried Curly Kale for the first time a while back and absolutely hated it, it was horribly tough and chewy, but I now gather than ditching the stalks helps with that, so I am planning to give it another go!

    • @derryXDINES
      @derryXDINES  3 года назад +4

      A lot of people have said that. This is baby kale which does look a lot like baby spinach but is a little tougher. If you use curly kale, definitely cut out as much of the stalks and firm parts, and cook for an extra minute. Some people like the chewy stalks. I don't, so I can see how that would be gross.

    • @neorich59

    • @richarddiannepeters4931
      @richarddiannepeters4931 2 года назад +3

      You can tenderize the curly kale by soaking the kale in a pan of water and add a bunch of Red man’s Real Salt- the salt removes some of the water from the kale and so it reduces the volume of kale and tenderizes it at the same time. You can then sauté your kale in a pan with garlic and onions or what ever your heart desires!

    • @richarddiannepeters4931
      @richarddiannepeters4931 2 года назад +2

      Oh and don’t forget to pour off the salt water and rinse the kale before adding it to your sauté pan!

    • @derryXDINES
      @derryXDINES  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes it does. what I used in the video is baby kale, but if you're using a tougher, more mature kale, you may need to simmer a little longer (10-12 mind tops), but once done, it will be tender and tasty! you can overdo it, though, so I would experiment to get it exactly how you want it.

    • @derryXDINES

      Great question! Most canned beans are already cooked, so my suggestion would be to drain and rinse the beans and add them at the same time as the kale so they warm through. This might add a few minutes to the cook time too. Depending how much liquid you want, you may have to add more stock and adjust the seasoning, but I'd do this slowly and taste along the way.

    • @derryXDINES
      @derryXDINES  3 года назад +2

      Sure! The cider vinegar is to add some acidity. Greens work really well with acids. If there's a vinegar you really like, that would also work. Obviously the flavors change if you use something like balsamic or red wine vinegar. Honestly, you can even leave that out and this will taste great too! You can even put in a little of your favorite hot sauce instead of vinegar (use less) for a spicy kick. Lots of ways to customize this!

    • @derryXDINES

      Anything as close to raw is going to retain more nutrients but some darker vegetables need more heat to break down thicker fiber veg. Kale can be eaten raw though if it's picked early enough.

    This is not kale man...its already soft in the package. I'm sure this gets melty soft from just 1 min of quick steaming it.
    Show us some real curly kale. The one you can build a hut out of. The one that is still chewy after 10 min of boiling.

    • @derryXDINES

      It's baby kale per the package. Because of this recurring comment, I did make a follow-up video using the mature kale you're talking about finishing where this one ends with some butter and parmesan to make a garlic Parm kale. Definitely a versatile prep!

      @@derryXDINES :) Ofcourse its kale. Just not a kale type i have ever seen in my stores.
      Im just frustrated cause i just ruined my dinner with hard, chewy, stringy kale following another youtuber. He went, oh you have to preserve the colors, its soo tasty and full of viatmins. Blah!! My jaw still hurts from chewing every mouthfull 35 times. And it still felt raw after having wilted down nicely and cooked in sauce for about 10 min.
      So now i just want soft buttery kale that melts like spinach, or i dont want it at all, if its even possible.
      Cheers.

      Vinegar is a great ingredient to add to dark leafy (tough) greens, and can serve as another layer of flavor if you use different vinegar (I. E. Apple cider, champagne, red wine).

      @@derryXDINES I have apple cider in the house. So it will tenderise the leaves? I guess i could experiment a bit with that.
      Right now im just mad. I wanna cook the shit out of the kale till it gets soft like spinach. And i dont care how it looks or if it still has any vitamins left!
      :)
