Chiefs overcome bad spot in Super Bowl LVIII game-tying drive | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc
There were 3 or 4 bad spots against the Chiefs
Yeah I was getting infuriated
Yes there was. Wait, I thought it was rigged for US?!?!?!?!
Also a number of terrible calls. The whiners had an illegal man down field on that first TD pass.
I really wondered why some of those spots didn't get challenged. Even if it's not a 1st down the spots would've at least been more in KCs favor
Refs always trying to hold KC back
Ball spotting is soooo baddd we are depending on a guy who is usually 10 plus yards behind the play to accurately place the ball - absolutely insane
They need to put chips in the balls it’s dumb
too darn many commercials
😂😂
I say that for every game during the regular season. Sometimes I feel like I’m watching more ad’s than the actual game.
I think it was one of the best Super Bowls. If you like watching elite defenses do their thing, this was a doozy. It was a nail biter from start to finish for me. My butt was clinching the entire time, wondering if/when someone was going to uncork a deep play. Watching the adjustments both sides made. This was a true chess match, with some riveting miscues sprinkled in. Great football game. Beats the hell out of a 4 score blowout.
I saw 2 or 3 easily noticeable bad spots in this game. The one that ended up having an impact was the one KC took the timeout on. The bad one I went "Whew" when we ended up getting the first down on.
With so much money involved, IN LAS VEGAS, there is always the possibility that a player, coach, coordinator, official, etc. can be bought. This possibility has always been there and undoubtedly it has happened in the past. But "The game is rigged" is simply bullshit. There are just too many people involved to keep that secret.
Dan Patrick said the same thing... great ending, not a great game. Couldn't disagree more with you. Entire game was amazing and awesome. Not sure what more you need. Lead changes, momentum changes, great QB play on both sides, so what if it was 0-0 after 1st qtr. Niners fumble at KC 29 on their first drive ... that's intrigue, excitement, great defensive play on a top RB. Next 3 possessions were punts, so what? Good defense is playing. Next 2 possessions were a FG by Niners and a fumble in the red zone by KC. If there was more scoring, there would be complaints that there was no defense, what's wrong with the defenses, yadda yadda.
Fully agree with the 3 quarters being lackluster.
If that is your way of seeing football, ok. I thought the tactical, defense dominated build up of the first three quarters was mind blowing ❤
I think it’s a good game when you get good defense, fumbles, come out after the half and see who made the best adjustments to win plus good coaching duel is a good game. As for the refs that’s the NFLs problem.
It’d be great if you guys would actually show the video that they’re talking about instead of just still images.
I think they do live but don't have the rights to have the clips on their RUclips.
The NFL absolutely needs to fix the officiating of every game. Everybody is yelling about legitimate bad calls ALL THE TIME! How can the NFL be so incompetent? Goodell says he's concerned about the integrity of the game. Really? Poor officiating IS lowering the integrity of the game - the entire officiating system needs a complete overhaul. Will they do anything about it? I doubt it.
KC could've interrupted the flow and given the 49er defense a free breather, but they just went to the next play. There was also a bad Pacheco spot, but they didn't waste time challenging. They just kept the pressure on the 49er defense, and it really paid off at the end.
Also, I'm sick of Florio's drama.
Happened to the Patriots against Pittsburgh- Ezekiel Elliott clearly gets a first down to seal the game, and somehow the lead official saw fit to spot the football a full yard behind where he clearly got to. It gave the Steelers an extra possession at the end of the game. I swear the refs are now being told to always spot the ball a yard behind where they think the ball got to, when in doubt.
Purdy, ever the game manager, made Mccaffery the #1 receiver. 61% completions. 3of12 on 3rd down. That isnt going to get it done in a Super Bowl.
Did you guys know florio is retiring?
Referees have always been human, just better camera, more film.
Question....the Chiefs were called for a "horse collar" in Purde which gave SF 15 yds and a first down. On the replay it was very clear that the defender never touched that portion on Purde but actually had his jersey just below and to the right. I thought it was a bad call or is that still a "horse collar"?
No that was a horse collar. No one from chiefs including the player made a thing of it
He initially got his hand inside the pad.
Talks about it and literally doesn’t show video. Lmfao
Can't get thru a day anymore without having to placate the conspiracy theory douche wagons. I can't even come here to get away from it.
As soon as the niners kicked the FG, we knew chiefs were gonna drive and win. NFL had to give Mahomes the “heroic” final drive to go back to back. That first half was so damn boring. (The last drive was brought to you by DraftKings Sportsbooks.)
😂😂😂
Such a tired, baseless comment
Because the Mahomes effect.
Bookmakers lost huge because of Chiefs win.
You've got everything all figured out, yet instead of putting your entire net worth on KC and making bank you're here posting comments on RUclips videos that maybe 100 people will read.
This is a perfect example of why everyone thinks the chiefs get all the calls. The chiefs gat bad calls against them all the time. They just overcome them and win anyways.
And other teams lose and cry about officials
Yelp…Hahahahahaha
I hate the chiefs as a broncos fan, but, I bet heavily on them and was surprised they we’re getting the bad calls here
That's part of it. Bust mostly it's just biased perception. Everyone is more sensitive to close calls that go against the team they are rooting, and everyone is always rooting for the teams that play the Chiefs because they are tired of seeing the Chiefs win. The Patriots experienced the same phenomenon.
Did anyone else notice how many bad snaps Mahomes had to pick up off the ground on those final drives?
Yep. Creed Humphrey, the center, has been tossing out low snaps for several weeks...surprisingly Mahomes has been scooping 'em up like a shortstop without too many problems.
we know what they are drafting in the first rnd this year
They are not replacing Creed. He'll clean it up. He's probably the 2nd best center in football behind Jason Kelce, and Jason gets the yips in the opposite direction frequently snapping the ball too high. @@michaelr3583
@@michaelr3583 I doubt they will be replacing Creed Humphrey, since he is the #1 ranked on PFF for Centers, but he will probably get some remedial time in camp on long snaps.
@@kjhgfdsd76654It started becoming very noticeable recently, I wonder if he's dealing with something. Of course they all are at this point
CMC TD should have been called back due to illegal man down field. No call...
Holding as well
Exactly
LOL! Losers always making up excuses!@@willdathrill713
All the bad refereeing this season, and even the refs couldn't stop the Chiefs 🏆🏆🏆
On Paecho's final catch in OT, he clearly got a 1st down, but the ref moved the ball back a half yard. Didn't matter since Mahomes took care of it, but i thought the nfl had a sky judge now to fix these issues. I mean, the sky judge seemed to be used early in the season, and now it's nonexistent.
The Chiefs were getting bad spots for a majority of the game. The intentional grounding call on the pass that landed close to Watson was utter bullcrap. The script was written for the 49ers, but the Chiefs overcame. Bill and the replay crew were on cruise control all game long.
There were several bad spots and I was surprised Andy didn't challenge any of them. I think the worst one was in OT when it can't be challenged anyway. Even as a KC fan I did think the intentional grounding was a fair call. Mahomes was clearly not trying to get the ball to a receiver there and just trying to avoid the sack.
No booth reviews for the entire game!?!?! C'mon NFL! Do better!@@hugegnarlyeyeball
Chiefs get all the calls, Had 9 points taken off the board in the AFCCG. Both calls/noncalls were bogus. As it turns out it didn't matter but that happens a lot to the Chiefs who "get all the calls"
The problem with the bad spot is it cost the Chiefs tine. I believe they kicked the Field Goal to tie the game because they ran out of time. How much time did they use getting a second first down? Could they have made a second throw to the End zone and won the game in regulation? But the Chiefs was victimized by a few bad spots. Not Good!
They also called Mahomes for grounding on a scramble when Noah Grey was in the area. When Mahomes told the ref #83 was in the area that ref yelled at him declaring the ball didn't make it back to the line of scrimmage! If you are a Chiefs fan you see this stuff a lot.
I’m constantly frustrated when the refs spot the balls where the players knee hits when the ball is clearly farther upfield due to player leaning or laid out horizontally. It’s a tough job and they do fairly good but close to the sticks is so critical they could do a better job
I mean it forced the Chiefs to run a 4 yard play for the first down and eat up at least 20 seconds off the clock.
That extra 20 seconds would have allowed the Chiefs to run another play when they were down on the goal line and score a TD rather than kick a FG to tie and go into OT.
So yeah!!! It was a huge mistake by the officials.
It was a compelling game and the tension was almost unbearable at the end. There were so many game defining plays in the last hour. It was great sport.
Agreed. Many people last year said the were unhappy with the anti-climatic ending to last years SB. Not a problem with this year's game.
It's fucked up too, because they can't challenge in OT right? There was another play where the Chiefs got a bad spot as well. Aren't all the replays from the booth?
Yup, all challenges in OT have to come down from the booth.
Basically the 49ers cheated and still lost the game lmao
I honestly think they tried to alter it with officiating for the 9ers because there were more than one bad spots. Pop had an obvious 1st down in OT and the official shorted him. Taking it to 3rd and 1 Thankfully the GOAT over came it when he ran it up the middle for the first down. There’s too much money involved not to expect some bull shit as corrupt as people are these days. I don’t believe for a second the bad spots were accidental. How many bad spots did the 49ers get handed?
Officiating was against the Cheif's ALL game and for the 49er's ALL game you noticed it. I appauld you for it. This needs to talk about it more moving forward. You know it's about MONEY MONEY MONEY.....
The Chiefs were robbed of about 2 obvious first downs, maybe 3, anyway, great game by both teams, the players played their asses off.
Yeah, it was noticeable, Pacheco would get 4 yards on a carry. The Referee's would move it back 1 yard.
At least 3 to 4 times. Look, the Referee's need to come out from underneath the umbrella of the NFL and the Cartel of Rodger Modelle. And be an independent organization.
Or you might as well call it the WWENFL where flying lariat and the people's elbow is legal too.
I'm just saying.
I think they need to bring the referees in. Make them full time employees instead of part time. That's really the biggest problem. None of these people do this as their profession. The most famous I guess, Ed Hochuli was a lawyer full time. Put a year round training program together. Maybe sign a deal with the spring leagues. Paying them more will reduce the possibility of any officials being on the take too. Bad enough that we don't know if the officials are gambling on the games too.
...and flying clothesline😶
It was a close game. The best football games really begin in the 4th quarter.
This game had everything. Defenses played great at times for both. Special teams hit huge fgs, blocked kicks, turnovers. Trick plays, lead changes. OT and a walk off TD win. I don’t know how anyone doesn’t think that’s one of the greatest SBs of all time
@@BobungaShamunga I think the argument comes form the fact that there was nothing happening for the first 3 quarters of the game really. They want to see games that are 41-42 after 3 quarters. This game was never going to be that. Both defenses were top 5 all year. And they were top 5 scoring defenses. When you have 2 elite defenses and 2 offenses that arent then what you get is a low scoring slugfest. A grind it out game. A game where special teams matters more than anything because of field position. But to the average fan of modern football, thats boring
I will be honest, I wasn't really cheering for either team, I felt they both deserved to win the game as two of the best teams this year. But maybe I heard Romo incorrectly, but I thought at one point he stated that McCaffrey shouldn't have gotten the TD because there was an illegal man downfield, and then he was shut-up pretty quickly and they never revisited the comment. It was a little weird. I still believe they need the "ref-in-the-sky" which means we get someone calling down to the field with penalties that are not called and picking up penalties that aren't correct. Just my two cents.
The irony is that most people were screaming the games are all fixed in favor of the Chiefs. Yet there's the bad spot you pointed out, not to mention the fact that they got John freaking Elway of all people to present the trophy. Sure looks to me like the league wanted San Francisco to win. I mean, I don't think the league had it in mind to have Elway present the trophy to his arch rivals 🤔
In the Raiders house🤣
It was the 50th year MVP and 25th year MVP. If I recall, the 49ers beat Elway in a SB. Neither team would have been his favorite option.
The officiating was really bad down the stretch in overtime. How was there no reviews from the booth? The teams couldn't challenge for several close first down ball spots or the Juszczyk catch, so how are you not gonna stop the game immediately? Then you have that ticky tack defensive holding on the niners first drive in OT on 3rd and a mile, when you they let them play the whole night on the outside?
Why didn't the eye in the sky not call for a replay to check the spot?
How could the game be rigged when your league MVP throws a jump ball intro triple coverage with the game on the line in the final minute?
Chiefs had FIVE fumbles. Only lost one. SF had every chance to win it. They couldn't get it done.
Maybe you prefer checkers more than chess. It was a great football game from start to finish.
There's no integrity in this game anymore that's why they keep changing the rules. And how long you think it'll be before somebody gets paid to take Patrick mahomes out the game
On the Valdez-Scantling reception, the zebras didn't award him yardage gained after he caught the ball, they marked him down after the 49ers defenders wrestled him backwards for 8 more yards. The officiating as far as marking the ball after plays was horrible all game long.
If he had just gone down after they first wrestled him backwards they refs might have given him forward progress but he actually ran backward on his own power after that to try to turn around and gain some yards back and they tackled him then.
@@hugegnarlyeyeball Facts!
He did too good of a job staying on his feet. It almost seems unfair but in that situation you're rewarded for getting tackled
You're understanding of the rules is incorrect. Once MVS disengaged with the defenders, he is giving up his forward progress.
that was the right call though, once he starts running forward again the forward progress he previously had is wiped
Small microchip on both ends of the football would solve a lot of problems
They also overcame an injured probowl offensive tackle, an injured probowl (if he didn’t miss the first 6 games of the season) defensive tackle and a missed ineligible man downfield on McCaffrey’s only score.
But to hear everyone tell it the game was fixed for the Chiefs… No the wanted the 49s to win
Looks to me like Kelce’s shin or knee could have touched ground during the tackle - at the 34. And, none of the Chiefs players, including Kelce, were claiming a first down. Just think you need more evidence on this one (other angles) before claiming with certainty it was a bad spot. All player behaviour on the pitch suggested it wasn’t. Instead, maybe be mad at the people responsible for showing first down on the screen, when the on field markers clearly indicated 2nd down.
NBC should show CFL on May 2024. Sunday Night Football.
There were multiple bad spots that went against the Chiefs late.
When Florio gets elected to congress... the NFL is scerewed... ;)
Underwhelming?
It was a hell of a game, competitive for the duration. That's ridiculousness, already a show on MTV.....
Underwhelming for people with attention spans of ants or that don’t appreciate the chess match of football
Also in OT, Pacheco got a first down but they put it as 3rd and one, lucky Mahomes ran 17 yards to get first down but since it was OT they couldn’t challenge it
It’s not rigged. There will always be dumb people on the internet who say stuff
SF had the #3 pick in the 2017 draft. Went with Jimmy G thinking he was better than any QB in the draft. Chiefs moved up to 10 and drafted Mahomes. Then SF WASTES a first rounder on Trey Lance a couple years later. People hating on the Chiefs need to direct that at SF executives and Shanahan.
If Top Golf can put an RFID tracker in millions of golf balls and accurately spot the location of every shot, it’s absurd that the NFL doesn’t want to “spend the money” to put technology in the ball and the down markers. The tech already exists, and it’s already cheap. There’s no excuse except head in the sand, luddite, fear of change.
The refs had at least 3 VERY questionable spots going against KC. But either way, spotting should be something technology can handle for the game.
I'm sure the NFL will tell you that they are saving hundreds of millions of dollars by having part time referees. If they actually had full time professional refs they'd have to double the price of tickets, yadda yadda yadda.
Come on you guy just hate the Chiefs, like cry babies, trying to stir pot for more hate, How many times did chiefs not get the first down when you know they made it and set the ball yard away come on, What we going have to do have sensor beams in beam and ball with sensors, so bell rings and light flash on first downs and Tds
People give the officials way too much credit and assume they are good enough at their jobs to fix the games. This is just incompetence
Florio is cheap! Pay the nfl for video, stop using still photos when breaking down plays
Chiefs may get Carl Cheffers in every big playoff game next year to stop the PatTrick!
Spags didn’t blitz because it was Brock Purdy. Spags blitzed because that’s what he does on every 3rd down.
You cannot convince someone with evidence if they ignore all evidence when developing their stance.
No reasonable person actually thinks the NFL is fixed. There is a mountain of evidence showing why that would be terrible for the NFL
And how many people that would have to be in on the fix would be huge....and none ever talked? Or recorded something with their phone? It's absurd....
@swann433 They'll say it only has to be one or two refs. But it would have to be one or two on every crew and they would have to avoid suspicion and they would have to make sure those one or two were amongst the officials selected in each game of the playoffs when there are mixed crews. Etc, etc.
what about cmc td they had an eligible line men down field they didn't call that
I agree 💯 with you, Chris. It wasn't until last few mins of 4th quarter. Overall, great OT & happy KC won. You guys are awesome & looking forward to next year when football starts back up. Cheers from Peterborough 😊
At least 5 bad spots, even in the ravens game too
NFL doesn't want tech enhanced exact ball spots. Human error is more dramatic.
It's where the ball is when a knee, elbow, hip etc hits the ground. Would a chip really help?
I'm getting sick of the media being all about scoring points. I find a watching a good defense highly entertaining
With tech we have today why not insert microchip into football to track the exact spot of football or something of that nature
What’s up Christoffelo? The entire game was great! Scheme against scheme, big play on top of big play. A great game. I already know that Florrio and other homer’s are full of foolishness, but I’m surprised at you, Christopher. Phil for HOF. Pillow fighting for all ya’s - damn whinny nags.
Mr Florio, about a year ago you had a massive rant about how the Chiefs are so terrible by not paying Mahomes his due contract money. You stated you have to cash in the money when you can get it. I wrote a comment at that time stating - Mahomes is so much smarter in that he knows with Super Bowl wins - comes the money and more importantly, the LEGACIES that will follow. I hope at some point, you realize how wrong you were/are about the player that is Mahomes and apologize to the Chiefs organization and the Chiefs fans for your short sightedness. Congrats to all the Chiefs Kingdom. We have earned these accolades after all the dismal years of the 70's and early 80's. Mahomes will probably once again redo his contract to allow a chance for this franchise to become immortalized with a 3 peat!!! I do not want a negative utterance out of you when this happens again. How bout those CHIEFS!!!!
I was calling this out when it happened, saying it should have been a first down. It was good that the announcer made a statement that it was second and 1, even though it was after the fact and the call was wrong. This happens multiple times every game with the Chiefs where they are routinely shorted forward progress, and their opponents are given more forward progress than earned. Go back and watch all the games for plays near a first down. The Chiefs end up with more plays a yard or less from a first down because it's known that they struggle with those plays. Just another way the NFL allows the officials to influence the game. Thankfully the Chiefs are able to overcome the bias most of time, including this one.
It's not rigged, or fixed. That implies the outcome has been predetermined. But it is nudged just a bit. A call here or there. A suspension for 3 games instead of 2, because that third game is against a conference rival. Taking away draft picks from a team for something that is generally overlooked when other teams do it.
They'll sell it as "parity" but it's the league nudging outcomes for ratings, and money.
This is a great example of how institutions(companies, education, government, etc) get bloated...we have extra guys in place to get everything right...what?...we missed something?...gotta add more people(rinse and repeat)
You can help the Chiefs, you can hurt the Chiefs, but you’re gonna have to deal with the Chiefs!
Nah the officiating was brutal. I don’t like these all-star crews. They missed so many spots.
There was an erroneous grounding call against Mahomes in which he was clearly outside the tackle box and there was a receiver in the area. There were several spots that went against Kansas City. Perhaps 4. There are more than the 7 uniformed officials on the field. There are more officials on the field dressed in black with headsets, and likely "eyes in the sky" who are also in on making calls. And they get it wrong way too often. I think they want the chance to control things. They want imperfection. That's why there isn't technology stepping in to make calls more accurate. Difference is, the Chiefs are now too clutch to let league incompetence or "incompetence" matter or control their destiny.
Mike made intelligent comments about the gambling and problems of “conspiracy theorists” regarding officiating. I hope owners and NFL listen.
If soccer can correct off-side and confirm whether the ball crossed the goal-line, the NFL can fix ball spots, where to put the sticks, whether th ball crossed the goal line...
Well...naybe theres a reason they hesitate on "pulling the curtain back".
I once knew a Vegas odds maker, and he said " its a Billion dollar industry, do you think they'd leave it up to chance?"
I think they have to fix it now because of the new gambling laws. Now, because there is really big money on these games. It leads people to believe there is a lot more incentive to fix games. It has to be above reproach. Officials need to be full-time and paid right. Let meritocracy and the enginuity of American industry fix this issue. Bring a new level of transparency so that the fans and now bettors have the highest level of confidence in the game and its officiating.
The game has become too fast for the Officials to follow, keep up with. Pay younger guys and gals a salary to be full time Refs, and make sure they are physically fit enough to keep up with the athletes!
The Chiefs had to punt earlier in the game due to a very bad spot. If not for Patrick Mahomes refusal to lose, it could have impacted the game.
The Giants/Bills Superbowl was the greatest game played in 40 years. Then again, Niners/Bengals might be the best 😂
How many games have Mahomes won in last few seconds of a game, he's best there is if game tried or he behind 3 points, give him ball he'll win, haven't you heard when like that game over mahomes win
I’m just glad there’s not some big officiating call that massively effected the outcome this year, always leaves such a sour taste when that happens
In the Ravens game, Mahomes ran and got hit legitimately. But the refs spotted the ball on a made up slide that did not happen. Either he slid and was hit late for a personal foul, or he got tackled and should’ve had the ball spotted there.
They overcame every call against as well as not called, 65 7 yards downfield on the CMC td catch that should not be.
I was calling it either
the best bad super bowl
or the worst good super bowl
around the 3rd quarter or so.
The ending made it one of the best super bowls with all the tension and potential game winners
The CHIEF'S are like boxers. They let the opponent punch away till they are tired and then they strike.
It was entertaining because we didn't see a flag thrown every two plays like during the season and it was really great when we didn't see flags going in favor of any of the teams.
agreed, this one was one the WORST Super Bowls ever played - constant mistakes.
I noticed in real time but the camera angle was not right to see the spot. When they spotted it short I thought it was too short but it is possible it was short if you were standing right on the line. And since chiefs were in hurry up we could not see other views
the chiefs were getting terrrrible spots all game. the one where andy should've challenged and instead wasted a timeout was a terrible spot.
While I enjoyed the second half, especially the 4 qtr/OT this wasn't CLOSE to the best SB ever or a great SB.
Best SB ever, no question
Not going to show the youtube followers since yall dont pay for the rights 😅
Yeah they weren’t given like 3 first downs that were clearly 1sts and 1 of them led to a punt.
You allowed a two year old to interrupt the show? 🤦♂️ I’m out.
