I played this when I was 13. One day on one quarter I played for over 90 minutes straight. I had at least 15 people watching me in awe. I had to leave and gave my game over to one of the spectators.....he played out all my remaining lives in about a minute 😀

My friend Paul used to be "world class" at Gyrus.... one Saturday he put a single 10p (that's English for a quarter I suppose) and played for about 12 hours.... he took a few breaks when i would stand in for him.... I was good but not as amazingly good as him and lost a fair few lives whilst he was gone but he'd just come back and earn a load more.... the game stopped when the arcade closed.... we could easily have gone on all night........ those we the days.

It was hard to get a chance to play at my local arcade initially. Once it became just another game, I played regularly and get good at it - cycle to Earth multiple times.

I put quarters in this box to listen to the music, and to play. It was a good machine to feed :). I was maybe 14. in that time was blown away by the forward moving space ship and warping to planets. most games like "Defender" were always before seen from the side, not forward. in those days that is what you call "3D Graphics" music in this original Atari rocked! NES version a bit softer. this was the edgy version I loved to play after school in the local arcade near our school! spent quite a few lunch moneys on it!

The entire solar system is being attacked by the vicious Gyrusians, and it's up to you to save the day! You will need to fly your spaceship to each of the nine planets and then clear three stages of enemies to rid that planet of the Gyrusians. You start the game with a single cannon, but can gain a double cannon after shooting a power up satellite. After clearing each planet, there is another bonus stage where additional weapons and bonus points can be collected. Gyruss is an arcade action shooter, however instead of piloting your spaceship horizontally or vertically, you move in a circle around the perimeter of the screen. The NES version of Gyruss adds to the original arcade version additional music, additional weapons, new enemies, and a large boss at the end of each level. Gyruss was remade for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan, and later the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America, released by Konami's subsidiary Ultra Games. These versions include several major revisions.
The player can use a super phaser attack in addition to the normal guns, which cost energy
There are additional enemies, including boss fights when the player reaches each planet
Bonus stages after each planet's boss is defeated, for a chance to gain additional powerups
There is a definite ending to the game. In the NES version, it's a brief text about the Universe being at peace. In the FDS version, there is a full ending sequence with credits.
In addition to the satellites providing the usual double guns and bonus points, they can also provide extra phasers, a smart bomb, and even an extra life
Instead of the arcade's 24 stages, there are 39, including Venus, Mercury, and the Sun.
The player can enter the Konami code at the title screen for extra lives, but it must be entered in reverse (A-B-A-B-right-left-right-left-down-down-up-up).

He's a very good player, he never gets killed and every chance stage - after every planet reached - always scores 10,000 points, the maximum. Initially I didn't understand why the match lasted only 18 minutes, then I saw that at the end he remained motionless and was killed like a kamikaze.
It's as if the game had finally reached a point where it was calibrated by a technician to no longer be able to move the spaceship....In my city, an arcade had a copy of Gyruss with games at half the price but at precisely 400,000 points the same mechanism was triggered. For me (2,300,000 points my record) it was frustrating!!!!!

The man designed this video game; he forgot the planet Pluto. Even though he excluded Venus and Mercury.

Used to go to Chuck E. Cheese and put in one quarter and play all afternoon without losing. Guess I had no life.

Wow, they managed to design this circular setup back in 1983? I can only say this game is totally tubular.
