Enjoyed seeing your setup here. It looks good. I agree though that it should work better to have your fire closer. That is going to be an awesomew camp when you get it all finished. My wife and I would like to do also set up a permanent camp
your an inspiration lilly, the sense of achievement must be amazing - i was very proud of my A-frame bed i made last summer - this is a lot of work & to think you done all of it by yourself.

i would move the fire 50cm closer to the shelter myself and make it a long one rather than a small circle (thats just me).

Hallo Lilly, sehr durchdachte Feuerstelle die voll auf Sicherheit ausgelegt ist. War auch wie man sehen konnte eine Menge Arbeit dran. Zum Glück hattest du passendes Werkzeug mit. Vor allem die lebendige schwarz/weiße Schaufel hat mir gefallen und dir gute Dienste geleistet. :o)) War wie immer schön dir zuzusehen wie dein tolles Lager wächst. Mir gefällt auch besonders, dass du so ohne weiteres voll anpackst und deine Hände schmutzig machst und das sogar ohne Handschuhe. Normalerweise legt die Damenwelt ja besonderes Augenmerk auf die Fingernägel das da ja nichts passiert. Quasi ein Powerfrau durch und durch. Hat mich gefreut das ich dich wieder begleiten durfte. I use to do that with my dog, Nike all the time.
Having Dax dig it hahahaha wow brave using your axe into the ground on the roots. You really put the work into your craft bravo. That bucksaw is seriously huge it can really crank through wood my goodness. Cool fatwood match. Its coming together.
I love your dog he is always digging holes and rolling in the dirt. You must bath him a lot.
Food for thought: Instead of moving the pit closer.... elongate it on an angle toward your shelter. You can then use any part or all of the trench for a longer fire. Also can have rocks to heat and roll under your bed at night. Also add about a 2 foot angled down part to your roof in the front...... it helps retain the heat on cold nights. Love your videos....... you are doing a great job.

I knew you had a reason for bringing the dog along. If you rub candle wax on the blade of the saw it will help protect it from rusting and help it slide through the logs smoothly. Keep on keeping on.

***** There are many available to rent, I have one myself, but it is on an island so you need to boat in. I think you would enjoy Canada quite a bit, however, the mosquitoes are very bad in the summer! I love the channel, keep up the good work Lilly!

Your hideout is improving. The fireplace was well built, but I agree with you; it would be better to have it closer. It´s nice to be able to put new wood on the fire without having to leave the shelter. With a reflector you could possibly sleep in there even when it is rather cold outside. Would you make a video on your first overnighter there?
It must be good to have Dax with you, so he can do most of the digging. ;-)

As a female who loves the outdoors, nature and all that it offers I have to say you're an inspiration! We can't believe Dax is 14 yrs old as he behaves like a little one and has so much energy!! if you don't have lots of big rocks, you can build a fire reflector with big logs. Works quite well for temporary :)
Daxie is the coolest dog, EVER! .....he's a good digger! .....I wouldn't want to give that muddy boy a bath though! That would be a chore!
I love that ya'lls clay is so yellow and reduced. The clay soils where I am (SE U.S.) is bright red.

Wieder ein tolles Video. Machst Du auch wieder ein Video wenn da der Schnee liegt. Ich mag's immer wenn es schneit :-) Wenn Du dort übernachtest könntest Du es mal probieren die Innenseite von Deinem Camp teilweise zu bekleiden mit einer Rettungsdecke. Das reflektiert die Hitze.
Lily, Camp looks great, you also have a great dog, as others mentioned fire pit one step away and also build the reflector, also interested in your homemade matches with fatwood........ty for sharing you are doing a great job.........
I guess dogs are dogs but it really cracks me up to see the similarities between your dog Dax and my dog Maji. I would like to know how you clean him up once you get back home. It is a big job. I use a garden hose outside first then take him to the shower indoors for proper shampooing and drying. Do you put him in a travel crate in your vehicle or have a truck of some kind? Great camp. Things are coming along nicely.
Another suggestion is that you might (maybe over time) make the pit longer in parallel with the shelter. Then you can use long logs and warm a greater length of the shelter.
I always enjoy watching your videos. Partially because of the effort you make to include many camera angles of what you and Dax are doing. I would have made this video very differently, and it would be boring! Thanks for being you!
Very nice Lilly. You could build a backstop on the opposite side of your fire pit and that would greatly increase the heat
flow to your shelter, which would be better than moving the fire pit.
Have you thought about attaching mylar emergency blankets to the roof so that the radiant heat from the fire will reflect down at your bed platform? Also a clear sheet of heavy plastic that can cover that large opening will allow the radiant heat in, provide insulation, and act as an excellent wind break. Keep up the good work, these are excellent videos!

I Made the same mistake with my fire pit, it was too far from the bed so I had to build a raised fire pit to get warm enough during winter.

Hi Lilly, I happened upon you in the last week or so, all of your videos that I've seen are quite good. I believe I'm going to give your RUclips name to my daughter. She has two daughters who are just now old enough to start learning these skills. She has a pretty good set of bush craft skills, learned in the time we liver in Alaska. Between your fine videos, and her hands on with the girls, I think they will learn faster and easier. Both girls and their mom grew up with study on computers, so your tutorials and my old Boy Scout manuals should make them comfortable in the woods. Thanks for the great teaching tools. I can see that you did plenty of work around your main camp and what you already did was nice and I hope you didn't move the fire too close to the sleeping area as to start melting the plastic.
Hmm, why make a path to a hidden bug out camp? Luv your crazy dog in the videos, always laugh when he/she is playing in the dirt.

Im new to survival/backpacking/buggingout in that i have done lots of research and many hours on youtube. Great video as usual. you said you would move the fire place closer next trip. It might be more useful as a keyhole type fire place so you could have larger fire for warming your raised bed and can have smaller fire/coals for cooking food and other uses. Plus it would be less effort. i may be wrong and it is your call but i thought it might help.
What about a long reflector wall behind the fire or possibly a shorter three-sided one in your experience would either one of those work to bring the heat to your shelter
Should try useing a long fire pit instead of a round. Can you make a video on how to make your homemade matches, please?

I'd turn it into a key hole fire pit to bring some warmth and cooking area closer to the shelter(and a reflector wall as others have suggested).

The exploding rocks from the valley are probably rocks that get seasonal submersion or are wet very often. The water expands in the heat of the fire and the steam can not escape fast enough,as it takes weeks to absorb the water, and so the rocks explode. Quartz is often fractured with microfractures that retain water and moisture.

the wheel barrow can also clamshell the fire if raining or I want to keep coals from blowing away when I leave the fire for 20 minutes to check the cooler traps or the hanging cheese.

Lilly would you consider experimenting by making a Dakota fire pit? Perhaps even trying a long fire pit for winter.

Fantastic video and I love the part when your dog got stuck in to work hehehe and what a great fire and a very good way to do it so when the fire has burned down you have the hot rocks for heat and to cook on and looking after the woods as well a true bush lady I must say and here is one you may like cayenne pepper and the health benefits and how it can stop bleeding fast and here is one that can help in all thing's in life Earl Nightingale RUclips .
