I had a 64 Olds Starfire hardtop back in my younger days, when we had four little kids under six years old.
I drilled a hole in the passenger side seat hinge and put in a steel pin to keep the front seat from going forward into the dash, on emergency braking stops!...Before seat belts!.....It was a great car!
Hi John, Happy to read you had a Starfire :-) Good news! Here is an updated video of this car for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
My uncle had one like this but had a white convertible top. We dropped my Aunt at a supermarket and he and I went to the Olds dealer and he bought the car new. I was 10, what a car! From what I remember the speedo started as green bar, then as speed increased went to yellow, then red and over 100 mph turned bright orange and may have had a buzzer that sounded. He routinely drove over 100 down the two lane blacktops of Hatfield, PA. We had years of fun with that car!

What a beauty. My dad owned a gas station and one of his customers had a blue/blue w/white top version of this car. I was 17 and in high school when I bought that blue baby for my first car in 1965. I knew it was a nice car but had no idea how special it really was. This video brings back a ton of memories along with some of the features I had forgotten all about. (the clock and 2 ashtrays for example) Thanks for the trip back in time.
Hi Frank, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads Customers car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
You really don’t know the feel of an Oldsmobile until you own one. My first few cars were Buick. But there was just something special about that first Oldsmobile.
@@TomSpeaks-vw1zp Agreed! Mine was such a wonderful experience.
I was 12 in 1962 and a lady who lived in my neighborhood owned the 62 star fire and hers had every option. In 1966 when I turned 16 the lady was trading the car in for another car and the Starfire only had about 5 thousand miles on it. I begged my dad to let me buy it from her and he said "no" because he thought it was too powerful for.a 16 year old kid. He probably was right but I always think about that car and wish I could afford one now.....
Hi John, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the lady who liked in your neighborhoods car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

I've seen this car and it's as nice as it looks. George is a nice man. These Starfires have a 394 Rocket with a 4 Spd hydromatic. For such a heavy car, they are fast. Back in 1968 I was on my way to Oswego drag raceway, to run my Olds. A 64 Buick Riviera was in the right lane next to me . We were neck and neck, racing each other down the recently finished Illinois tollway. My Car's speedometer was blood red all the way across. The Buick was steadily passing me as we came up on three state troopers with their radars out. I kept going, but three other cars in our group , including the Buick got pulled over. Back then, the tollway police were driving golden brown 68 Oldsmobile 442's . We met up later at the speedway and the guy with the Buick was pissed that I escaped getting a ticket. They had him at 135 mph. My Olds speedo was red all the way., somewhere between 125 -130mph. Had a black Starfire coupe for almost 25 years. Sure miss it.

I was a kid and it still thrills . You had to be there in October of 1961 when this baby came out in a Rose Mist with white top and stunning silver gray leather interior. Truly one of the most beautiful cars ever made . The 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible .
Hi SeldonKid48, Ahhh, let the good times roll.... Thank you for adding to the story, Lou
62 Starfire has always been my favorite. I had a 63 Olds 98 Holiday Sport Coupe...Which had the Starfire engine & interior. A super car. 4800 lbs. of sex.

Great memories. I took my driver’s test in our family’s blue/ blue ‘62 hardtop. Later in college they gave it to me for a while. Still love that car!!
Hi Eagletree, Happy to read this one brings back great memories :-) Lou
This car sold for right around $5000 in 1962. I was shopping for a good-looking convertible that year and the Starfire was a definite top contender. However, I finally settled on a '62 Pontiac Bonneville convertible that I really loved and still have very fond memories of.

My dad brought a 58 super 88 from our home in Ontario in to Vancouver in 1960 it was salt sick from winters in the east but loved it ,spent a huge amount on the panel work drove a company Pontiac 6 , I tried hard as a 14year old to get him to trade up to this model in 1964,despite his love of the brand ,he bought a new Rambler Ambassidor, which I thought a total embarassment at that impressnable age. This motor( I live in the uk) is a darling in covetible form . love it still 57 years later. great video

Absolutely stunning car! Back in the summer of '63 some friends of my parent's visited us, and they had a '62 Olds Starfire hardtop. I was 15 years old and just starting to really get into nice cars (with the expectation of getting my driver's license the upcoming year). I was just blown away by this car, with all the exterior side stainless steel moldings and trim, etc., let alone the beautiful interior with bucket seats and console. One thing I really like about pre 1968 cars (by and large) was the quality of trim pieces, badges, emblems, etc., all mostly stainless steel, chrome, die cast metal, etc., unlike all the cheap vinyl and plastic chrome on today's cars.
Thank you for adding your story to this one. This car at 15 I can see made an impression & still brings good memories today :-) Lou
WOW I WAS 15 ALSO THIS MUST BE THE Y TUBE FOR THE SENIORS WTF..LATER
What a beauty. George is right about the interior. It is stunning. Why were the Big 3 making such beautiful cars back in the 50’s and 60’s? It really stands out now that something special was going on.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing the details you notice.
Always loved the Oldsmobile. I remember Tom McCahill when he did a review of an Oldsmobile for mechanics illustrated back in the early sixties. He called it a Family car with enough power for two families👍

Lansing built a real headturner with this one! That aluminum side trim panel really sets it off. In fact, some years ago my station wagon club had its convention in Niagara Falls and somebody brought a mildly modified 1962 Super 88 Fiesta wagon with that same trim added on! This was in Oldsmobile's second run of Starfires, which ran from 1961 to 1966. The third run was from 1975 to 1980, when the Starfire became Olds' version of the Chevy Monza 2 + 2.

The 1962 Oldsmobiles were in my books , the most " stylish" ever produced ! They were the most beautiful cars designed by Oldsmobile ! Another gorgeous car was the 1962 Pontiac hardtops . General Motors really produced some FINE automobiles over the years !! Happy Motoring ! Mark E. Switzer 10:04

When I was 16 I had use of the family car a beautiful navy blue 1963 Buick Wildcat with white tuck and roll interior bucket seats and console with tach. A beautiful car it was but this Olds Starfire tops it Ithink. You can squeeze three buddies in the trunk to sneak into the drive in theater. Trust me I know. Beautiful car, congratulations.
Hi John, Sounds like good memories :-) Here is an updated video of this car for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
Can you believe that back in the day I owned two of these? The first one I bought in 1967 when I was 17 was a white hardtop. It had some front end damage that was repaired but still had primer instead of paint on it. For a car that was 5 years old at the time, it was still in some pretty bad shape but to me it looked just like George's convertible. I remember that the upper control arm bushings were almost completely gone and the tie rods were shot. The exhaust system (dual) was shot with the resonators completely rotted out. Did I mention I lived in Nebraska? The lower quarter panels were rusted away as well. But I loved driving that car and it would light up the tires on the late 60's Omaha streets. The second Starfire was a red convertible I picked up in 71. It suffered the same maladies as the hardtop with the added exception of the gas tank leaking. I believe I paid $600 for the hard top and $200 for the rag top. Loved those cars though.
Hi Steven, Having two is twice and nice :-) Good news! Here is an updated video of this car I think you'll enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
Yeh...that 394 cu. in. high compression engine was a great machine. I commented here 3 years ago that I owned one that was white. I wanted to add that mine also had a beautiful baby-blue interior. This year Olds was a "classic beauty"...especially the Starfire.

The GM full size cars between 1959 and 1962 were my favorites. I had a 1962 Buick, but that Olds Starfire is in my opinion the best looking GM model that year. The Pontiac looked good - my mom had a 62 Safari when I was a little kid. That's a beautiful convertible in fantastic condition.
Hi David, Happy to read this car is in the years that are your favorite :-) Lou
GM was really killing it around that time. The '62 Starfire, '65 Riviera, and Pontiac Bonnevilles of the period are all bucket list cars of mine.
Happy to read you enjoy this one, and hope you're behind the wheel of all the cars on your list.
Love this car.Still ahead of its Time.
I'm a car,I've had lots of them.
I now have a 37 Buick two sedan ( Big Block Chevy ) love it.
But this Olds is the ULTIMATE.

Love the car ,when I was in middle school I had to pass the olds . and studebaker dealer and had to go inside to admire their models ,my Dream cars were one just like yours but red. And a studebaker GT, red with a white vinyl top.
Thanks for bringing back fond memories. The car was bought by a wealthy Dairy Farm owner.

I see as a freshman in high school when the chrome strip olds came out. This was a bold move to disguise that the 61's and 62's were consid er ably DOWN SIZED from the 59's and 60's. Less car, more money GM song. The olds got bigger in '63. As far as cams. It was always far better if you wanted to spend the $$$ to get a good aftermarket cam AND kit and get away from those hydrallic lifters. Some guys bgot the roller kit and kept a 3/4 or so cam so they could say they had a "roller cam" in their ride.....
They are, however, 100% right that the '62 olds interiors were the BIG thing that year. The design of seats alone WOW! One thing, the "right" color for the 62's was the factory "candy" Red. It was a knock out! Golden memories.

Greeting gojoe283. I enjoy the design & details of this cars too :-)
Today all cars seem to be jellybean shaped or boxes on wheels. When cars had class and could tell one from the other.
We had a 62' in the Ninety Eight luxury trim when I was a kid. White with a light bronze interior. 4 door. Our first car with A/C and power windows.

I love this car! My grandfather had a '62 88 and I was very young when we would go cruising in it. Loved the dash and it had a "COLD" light that was yellow I believe.
Sounds like great memories. Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
My very first car was a '66 Ford Fairlane 2 door sedan with a 289/2v auto. It had a blue 'Cold' lamp that I still think is completely cool to this day.
guglielmo64
My dad had a 1962 Oldsmobile station wagon. The "cold" light was green, not yellow. It would come on when the car was first started up in the morning, then stay on until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. I have never seen that feature in any other car!
I love the color,so nice to revisit a time when cars were art
Marshall Curtis Yup, green. Chevy used it between at least 61-64. Buick may have. Ford went to a blue light in 65 when they eliminated the gauge. Those wheel covers and ones on the 98 were quite the deal. You had to pull them away from the wheel before you could get a handle in to remove them. Save the cover from damage. The 98 had a color keyed blown foam looking headliner with chrome straps and special floor mats.
George has very good taste in vehicles that Pontiac in the background is another gem as well.It makes a person wonder why the manufacturers don't put the style and quality into their vehicles they once did.Love these videos,Thanks.

Hi steve20118, Thank you for viewing and sharing this you enjoy the enthusiasm regarding this car :-) Lou
I owned a 62 olds as a young man. a wonderful car. it had a 394ci ultra high compression with a single 4 barrel carb. rated at 330 hp. it had a 4 speed automatic transmission. the speedometer read like a thermometer. the indicator was triangular . 0-30mph was green and 30-70 was orange and anything above that was colored red. you could move that hand from 0 to 120 in a few seconds. mine left a lot of GTO's in the dust. this was a heavy car , about 4400 lbs. it road like a cloud either at 60 or 120mph. oldsmobiles were a very special car in the day. luxury. Mine had a single exhaust and drum brakes at all wheels but they were power brakes and would stand it on its nose. wonderful car. of all the cars I've owned over the years, this was my favorite
Hi dufus, Glad to read this is a favorite of yours :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

I recall a similar car with a similar color (2 door hardtop) that appeared to have been abandoned on a vacant lot in Jacksonville, FL during the early '70s. The car was fully intact and looked good despite it having looked like it had been there for some time. Still wonder about its history. Good memories. I owned a '69 2door Delta 88 Royale for a time that I still have fond memories of. Great work Lou.
Sounds like a good memories. Thanks for the compliment. Lou
I love this car! My step-dad, a French born and trained mechanical engineer, bought a white (red leather interior) 62 Starfire like this one. Albeit, a two door coup. I was 9 years old. "Marry him, Mom," I said. And she did. My Mom was a beautiful woman and Lionel was no dummy. Little did I know the Starfire was just the beginning of his plans for us. His next move was to move us into a beautiful house in Setauket, Long Island N.Y. put a pool in the back yard and build a barn for some horses to keep her, us, busy during the day. Oh, and he left the 350 horsepower Starfire home for her to drive to the grocery store, the beauty parlor and the saddle shop whilst he drove his super cute, ultra French, little brown 1950 Renault 4CV to work at Gyrodyne a helicopter design and manufacturing company where he designed seminal systems for stage 5 storm level helicopters. I love that man. Still do. He will be 97 years old this November and he is still taking super good care of my Mom 57 years later. BTW, they drove the Starfire for 6 years. When the odometer hit 65,000 miles Lionel sold it to one of the men who worked for him at the plant and bought Mom a 1968 teal blue Oldsmobile 442 convertible. She is 88 now, doesn't ride horses or drive high-horsepower Oldsmobile's any more but they are still living happily ever after. Thanks Lou for asking George to drive us around the block, it really brought back visceral memories. And, good luck George, your joy with your 62 masterpiece is palpable. I am as jealous of you as I am happy for you.

I don't think I have ever seen a full size GM model from this period with the power window switches mounted on the console. I thought they were always on the doors. That is cool! Beautiful car!
Hi Tom, So glad you enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing what you learned, Lou
The 62 thru 66 Ford Galaxie 500/XLs equipped with power windows were mounted on the floor console.
How nice of the owner to drop the top and take you for a spin. IMHO the 1962 Starfire was the peak of perfection. The interior and exterior designers just took it all to the top of the mountain, but fortunately did not go over the cliff. Even the engine compartment is beautiful. I recall seeing these new in an Olds showroom with an amazing silver and grey leather interior and white exterior. The hardtop roof was that wonderful "convertible look" that GM used just this one year for the Olds, but for 3 years on the Impala. Thanks for recording this one Lou. Sad that GM killed Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
Hi rizzle razzleuno, "peak of perfection" High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
I restored a 62 Dynamic 88 in 2002 and loved that car. We sold it to find a 62 Starfire but never was able to get one. We ended up getting into the 62 Olds Jetfire model (the little turbocharged cars) and now have two of them. I like every model Oldsmobile produced in 1962.
Hi Eric j, Glad you found a Winner :-) Ok, curious, why 1962 & Oldsmobile? Lou
I am a nut for anything Oldsmobile but the 1962 model year was one of the top years. The interiors and body lines of that year was a home run. Only other interiors that were ever close in my opinion was the 90-92 Toronado Trofeo interiors.
Ok, I understand. Thank you for sharing, Lou
One of the best of that period. You can sense the clay sculpting process…and a design that looks like one mind did front and rear. Please don’t put this up for sale. I couldn’t resist it and I need to save my cash for gas in my current car.
Hi M A, High praise for the design of this car :-) Lou
I was a proud owner of a 64 StarFire hardtop!!! A gorgeous car ...this man obviously agrees!
His 62 is really clean ...better than my 64...that I owned in 85.
But!!!! I noticed one small thing I got him on!! My gas cap dóor was literally trimmed in chrome!!
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this "gorgeous car" :-) Good news! Here is an updated video of this car I think you'll enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
Lou, my Dad had a power blue I thought it was a rocket 88??? The most beautiful Automobile, I have related my eyes on, it had a horn in it lo, that was so loud , i meen, so loud. Beautiful car.
Mark, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Also, here is an updated video of this car for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
Bad ass ride, the first time I seen 62 Starfire was yesterday and fell in love... I loved classic cars since a little kid and I have 2 oldskool Cadillac Eldorados, Buick LeSabres and a Olds Nine Eight.
Hi L Jones, We have a Winner! Glad you fell in love with this one :-) You have some nice rides too. Hope you see many cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
My Dad owned a 62 olds convertible with gold paint, gold leather interior and a white top. We lived in Hawaii and he loved that car! My Moms' car was a 61 Cadillac coupe convertible with black paint, red interior and a white top as well. Awesome memories!
Sounds like great cars in a great state. Nice. Thank you for sharing your story, Lou
George always has the nicest cars...no sense filling the garage with nothing but THE BEST.
All of his cars have been featured so I'd agree :-)
He has a SWEET Pontiac as well.

Ultramodern 1962 Olds Starfire! Ultramodern - inside and out!
Designed by Bill Mitchell and David North.
Hi Dejael, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
"when you hit 65 the devil jumps out". In grade school I had a teaching sister say "when you go over 35, St Christopher gets out. :)
Nice :-)
My mom had a ‘61 Super 88, 394 cu in 4bbl, 330 hp right out of the box. Used to drag race 327 Chevys by Cleveland Hopkins Airport and eat’em up. A lawyers in our neighborhood had a 62 Starfire coupe Black with grey leather. Car came with an optional dual quad set up. Awesome. Tx Lou love the show.
Hi Richard Grisanti, You're mom used to drag race?! WOW. Sounds like great memories. Happy to read your enjoying the show, and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
That is amazing my grandfather had the same car but in a hard top same colors and the only way I remember it because I was 3 years old as it was in a lot of home movies.
That car is absolutely beautiful you should be so proud that is Oldsmobile history.
Lou another good one

@@loucostabile Lou, thank you for responding, I sent you an invitation on LinkedIn today. My real name is Stephen Love.
I'm connected with lots of car people. Thank you
Nearly unbreakable, the 394 with the Rotary Hydromatic (Slim-Jim) refused to burn tires, but would silently smoothly rocket up to 100 mph, shift into high gear, then climb over the top of the speedo. We all just went for a ride in a 60 year old GM car.
Hi Jon, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Good news! Here is an updated video of this car for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/fpQZOnYkFE8/видео.html
That's the most badass car I've ever seen on your show Lou! That dashboard the seats the console the interior, the overall design is off the chart on the cool Factor!
High praise Bob Bob :-)
Lou, OMG That car is true perfection. I am so impressed ! It had the greatest options a car could have. I loved the blue exterior. I wonder if George would let me drive it ? lol Overall, one of the nicest cars you have had on your channel. Thank you.

The styling and the quality is outstanding
High praise :-)
Turns red at 65 to remind you that 65 was speed limit for Highways … I runs better than a Mercedes because it has a 394 V-8 and it cost the same as a House in 1962 … this baby will screech in 1st and 2nd gears …
This is Real Muscle …. Thanks Lou & the owner for a Fantastic 🚗

Lowering the top on a classic car is one of the best feelings!
:-)
I owned a 62 olds 98 2 dr hardtop but always wanted a Starfire. Beautiful car. I believe the Starfire had a unique transmission that wasn't shared with the rest of the Olds lineup. The hardest thing with my '98 was keeping it at the speed limit. It was so quiet and powerful that you would look at the speedo and you were going 80 mph!
Hi Stuart, Thanks for sharing your story on your smooth fast Olds 98. Lou
The only thing relatively unique about the Starfire transmission was the console shifter. Otherwise, it was a normal 4 speed Controlled Coupling Hydramatic for 1962, first introduced exclusively by Oldsmobile in the 1940 model year, standard on Starfire and 98, optional on other Oldsmobiles.

Hi Lou,
I enjoyed watching this episode about the 62 Starfire, great car fully restored. Thanks for the shout out as I'm the "guy up in Canada" who is remaking the side panels. I also have this car in a coupe in wedgewood mist (light blue).
Keep up the good work and now that I have found this site I will follow your adventures.
Thanks

Boy o boy, she is really something! Love the two hood latches, never knew Olds painted some V8s red either! There is nothing like an Olds V8. My aunt had a 63 Starfire coupe, so cool...
+kramden Sounds like your Aunt knew how to roll. Thanks for commenting, Lou
As a young teen, I have a hard top version of this car. It was red on red! Awesome car!

And lurking in the cul-de-sac, without comment, is what appears to be a 1960 Pontiac convertible. Nice neighborhood.
