- MTD Rear Wheel Removal Riding Mower . I show how i remove stuck rear wheels off of a MTD Riding Mower.. I have the rear trans axle out of a scrap mower, but you can do it just as easy with it in the tractor , no need to remove it to get the wheels off. The wheels on a MTD riding mower are slid on to the axle and a bolt screwed into the end of the axle holds on the MTD wheel.I use a puller to remove the wheels .I do not heat or pound very hard on the rim as it can get damaged. The MTD Riding mower wheels are known to get stuck , and some are stuck on much worse, than the one in the video , but i use same method to get the Rear MTD Wheel loose from the axle.
mower repair. remove riding mower rim.
wtbm123. rim stuck riding mower Авто/Мото
Tried your method. Worked like a charm! Every man should own a harmonic balancer. Thank you much!
Glad it helped!
Great video WTBM! Makes me remember braking the axle on one of those small john deeres quite a few years back. Have a good'nnn
+geargriden19 Thanks
Thanks from Australia. I made a puller. Guess I'll try driving around for a bit.
You seem to know more about that differential than most folks. Thanks.
Thanks . If have an air hammer , can pull on wheel and hit the bolt with no washer on it , will also sometimes get them loose
Very good information. Never had the wheels off of one of these setups before. Now I know how!
+Velvethamma Some get rusted on pretty good
That's funny..."either I wasn't recording or you weren't watching". I have an older Craftsman that's been working great but I'll check those bushings. Thanks.
+wyattoneable lol thanks for watching
i never realized those rims were pressed on. Never had to service one. Good info and tips
+Ozzstar They slip on , but get rusted on . Some are really hard to remove
Yeah like mine was it took me 5 hours taking it off the right side of the axle cause I ran a screw over and swapped rim and tire
You made short work of them :-).
Nothing wrong with any of your methods, whatever works is all that matters, and no damage was done at all, smashing :-D.
That puller is a god send, well worth the money when you originally bought it, finds uses again and again :-).
I have and old two arm puller claw type that i bought when i was 17 to remove the bearings from a motorbike, its not as good as your plate/bolt type but it comes into its own.
.
A frend could not get a splined windscreen wiper off his car, it rusted and became one with the car lol.
The two armed puller with claw ends just made it look so simple, you gotta love the right tool for making a job easy to do :-D
+zx8401ztv Pullers are nice , and do more usually, than pounding does . I was hoping these wheels would of been harder to do , would of made a better video.
Thanks a lot brother, I didn’t think about that I’m going to drill two holes in my rim so I could use my puller
Worked like a charm my brother pulled the room BAMM
Yeah that's my plan when I need to change the rubber on my blower tire.
Nice work Terry in getting the rim off the shaft. Never done one before, but I can that if it rusts on there, it would be a bear to get off. Take care...
+stuzman52 Some get stuck really bad
I new an old Navy BT and he suggested I use wintergreen oil as a penetrating oil after everything else I tried failed. I got it at the grocery store back then??? Also got an eyedropper and put it to the test. Surprised me how well it worked and it smelled good too! Camera's get a mind of there own sometimes. hehehe
+TheEZGZ wintergreen oil, interesting
Cant wait to attempt this tomorrow 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
been there with just a nut on the back side and it came right through the front part of the rim. but i got it off
I like your idea. I did buy longer bolts and will try your method. It seems like the best. Thanks
If you have an air hammer , Can loosen bolt , pull out on wheel and hit bolt with airhammer , it also works well , but many do not have an air hammer.
I just got a new rider and was going to take the old scotts/jd and use it to pull dead cars into the shop. The tires are so bad you can see the air threw the sides.lol I needed to get them off to fill with concrette now I know how. I knew it was not going to go good anyway but got to lay them on there side to fill them. Thanks for the idea.
Hope you get them loose
You've saved my bacon, buddy - many thanks!
Glad I could help!
Good stuff Terry.
+jevchance Thanks
Wow it looks like your cutting grass already, that groundhog was right down your way and out to lunch up here. I've had them so seized on by the time I got it off the rim was scrap. LOL
+STEVE ROB I have mower 3 times already . I was hoping these would of been stuck on better , but i filmed it so they just came right off , instead of fighting me like i thought they would
I did this a few days ago with the same puller on an old johnn deere 70 lawn tractor used heat also...I did pull the threads out of the bolts and had to use 2 more but it came off
Thanks for watching and commenting
Nice job, those can be a real bear to get off at times , Thanks
+Rusty “rustyglovebox” Glovebox I figured these would of put up a better fight . Thanks for watching
I woulda gave up, or ruint the whole project!
Thanx man!
+captainjerk lol thanks for watching
Good tips. Thanks!
+Bruce Boschek Thanks for watching
Hey Terri!!!! I have melted a candle into the area where a pulley is seized to a shaft, they seems to lube them up pretty well, good idea on the washers to keep from damaging the rim.... BTW, have I mentioned that I hate tires???? Thanks for posting Bud!!!
+Harvey Spooner I have also used the wax a few times on pulleys and things , but never tried it on these . If i have any tires to change in the near future , i will send them to you , seeing as you like doing them so much . lol
The center bolt is 5/16 UNF. Cap screws have a smaller head and will pass inside the wheel tube. I used a selection of 3/4" to 2.5" in length and the point of the puller locates inside the head of the cap screw. Use or cut the first screws so they bottom out so as not to deform the shaft threads.
Yes , i have found out a air hammer works well also. Thanks for stopping in and commenting
Thanks Terry.
+ManicMechanic007 Thanks for watching
I'll be drilling holes into my lawn tractor rims tomorrow. then off they come!
Good one Terry
+snocrushr Thanks
Your Trans is off, why dont' you just replaced the Tire or even put a new Tube in without removing the Rims ??
right on man . I have an old rear engine mower That I will never get them off . They are 1979 rust welded on .. UGH !!
+ShawnMrFixitlee I thought these were going to put up a fight , but came off easy .
too easy, and then hard again! good vid
+cigarcaptain I was hoping they would of put up a bigger fight , but cam,e off kinda easy
Thanks man I got a pony I think I might have ta do the same thing to this will help a lot :)
Some people use a air hammer . put bolt in the end and hit with a air hammer , have not tried it , but it also should work
People Break the Trans Rod by doing your method, so watch out :(((
yes, you got pretty lucky that these weren't real stuck, I hate those with the flat spots on the end of the axle shaft, if you saw my video where I had to pretty much mutilate the rim to get it off the axle, but this isn't new, way back in the 80's they were using this method.
+MissouriOldTimer I have had them put up a good fight before , but when i decided to video removing them , they were to easy . Some just like to never come off
Good Job !!!
Thanks
Good tips. I hope I don't need them anytime soon, but...
+The Shade Tree Fix-it Man I figured these were going to be harder , but turn camera on and they come right off .
It was really on there. wow.
+buzzsah Some get rusted on really bad
After get wheel off be sure to smear axel with anti seize compound. Might come off with less trouble next time.
Thanks for watching and commenting
I tried this with no luck.I actually heated the rim and usued PB blaster several times over a 3 hour period.I thin used the harmonic puller and as I started to tighted the puller. The threads started to deform on the shaft.I immediately stopped and glad I had the same size tap as the shaft.Just be careful.Everyone has different outcomes though.
I usually run the bolt in first then push on the head of it . and some people use a air chisle to remove
Good stuff
+MrHevyshevy Thank you
A lot of the older rims didn't have holes for the wheel puller and you had to drill your own.
+DesertDigger1 Yes i have ran in to those . These ended up coming off easier than i hoped for
this tool wont work on my snowblower tire rim theres no holes for the bolts
If one has an air hammer and be careful not to mushroom the end of axle , they will come off that way a lot of times
Unfortunately, i had to beat mine off with a 3lb hammer, they were stuck like hell.
I cleaned the axles up cleaned out the rim, and the things were still hell to get back on even
They do like to rust on there pretty good sometimes
Wiesshund only thing I can say is once there off put antiseze on it
I tried that trick with the pulley puller and I bent to the tool
tyre didn't even move
Put bolt in , pull on rim , and hit bolt with a air hammer also works , but many do not have a compressor or air hammer , is why i did not include it
Cool!
Thanks
Cool
+Integra DIY Thanks
You’ll doing it right and with some heat it will move easily
I try first with out heat
Can use one from autozone free
Yea . most will come off but some could use heat , but should remove valve core if going to heat , just so if gets to hot it does not build pressure and pop a tire .
what tread size is that center bolt?
MTD 710-0627Screw, 5/16-24, .750
ok thanks.
Of course...sounds about right.. out comes the camera and off comes the rim... easily... hahahaha.
+yourbeekeeper this one was sitting in a damp area , so i figured them to be stuck really good , but fooled me
Funny I've owned 3 of those pullers and don't have one. People borrow them and I never see it again.
+william staten I know the feeling
Those rims are buggers...
+sixtyfiveford Yes they can be . I was hoping they would of put up a bigger fight
I got an evil one thats rust welded on you can make a video trying to get it off lol.
If you have an air chisel , put the bolt in most of the way , may be able to remove washer if it has one . But pull out on wheel and hit the center bolt with air chisel . Sometimes that works well . Just be care full of not hurting the bolt or threads in axle
Wow you da man
Can also use a air chisel , Hold out on rim and hit the bolt in the axle with air hammer . Thanks for watching and commenting
Heat.....nuff said
Thanks for watching
Had a new one of those type pullers, and it BROKE IN TWO 🥺…..4-8-2023
Sorry... I stepped away when you where doing the first rim.
+TimsComputerRepair Do not feel bad , seems every one done it . lol
*CUT the Tires off, clean the Rims and put new Tires on.... Easier than sitting there fighting!*
Thats what im about to do..my tire is dry rotted..wheel want move so ima just pop the tire off the wheel wile its on the mower lol
Good one Terry
+tomswonderfulworld Thanks Tom
Cool
+CountrySideClub Thanks
