Mine was frozen bad, tried a puller, tried your method which was good, but still would not budge. I went back to my old bag of tricks that I used on other things like blower wheels and blower motors. The secret is to first knock it on further(which brakes it loose) then take it off. Take a piece of 3/4" ridged pipe(black Iron or galvanized) 2 or 3 feet long. It will fit over the shaft on the outside of the wheel. Hit it hard with a sledge and knock it in an 1/8 of an inch. That's it, not froze anymore, now use a puller or your method and it comes right off. Hope this helps someone with a really hard one to get off.
You did a GREAT job showing us how to remove & re-install the rear tire. I Give you a top 5 stars for making it easy to see & follow your instructions!!!
The rear wheel on my Husqvarna Lawn tractor was frozen from rust. I beat on the rim for a week and the rim didn't even budge. I tried this method and it worked. I had to heat the hub several times and I put Liquid Wrench on the hot hub. Thank you for doing this video. Clint
I removed my rusted rear wheel on my John Deere with WD-40 and banged the rim with a heavy duty hammer, for a minute( had a new rim and tire to replace)...Then I hit it from the backside and it came off, an easy piece😅. Not everyone has that equipment, however the knocking part you showed gave me direction.,.so ty for that.😊
Mine was super seized. I ended up spraying PB blaster every day twice a day for a week. I ended up tipping the tractor so the affected wheel was higher than the other side and left it propped up like that until Two weeks were up…this helped the penetrating oil deep further down the shaft with the aid of gravity. I ended up using a harmonic balancer puller to break it free without the aid of heating with a torch.
Thanks you 76hotrodF250. It worked with a few modifications. I have one of those MTD tractor since 1999. Time to replace the rear tires and get it ready for hurricane season. So I did not know what I was getting into until I started pulling and hammering at the tires. They would not come off. I blasted it with WD40 and nothing. I ran into your video and tried the heating trick but with a less tame propane torch. One wheel came off easily the other was was stubborn a a mule, but it gave away after some muscle with a jack hammer. keeping those videos coming I am sure there are a bunch of us out there with similar problems. thanks, save my Sunday afternoon. Cheers from Land O lakes Florida!
Yep like the way you start your vid I feel the same way when you want to do something and you have to to do something else to get to that something you were suppose to do cause everything is jamed in rust , torches are the best at a lot of things . have a nice day
Great instructional video. I have a Toro snow thrower that has a stuck on rear wheel. I'm trying the WD40 trick first but if that fails will likely have to resort to using heat from a torch. Excellent comment btw on removing the wheels annually and servicing them. Wish I had known about removing the wheels and servicing regularly.
At the end of your video I heard you mention the bolt attachment method used on the MTD...... I have a Troy-Bilt which is made like the MTD. My rim is stuck, which is why I watched this video. Oh boy am I in for a fun time.
Try a Cold water quench immediately after heating. Centre punch centre of Axle and use air impact chisel with pointed bit. ALWAYS air down the tires when removing rims.
Rotiller wheel 40 years old. Used the heat and penetrating oil, also took the tire off the rim and used both methods to get wheel off. Took quite a bit of pounding. Axle had no rust and inside of wheel had no rust. I will generously lubricate the axle with never seize. The other wheel came off easily with just penetrating oil.
The first thing you should do when you get a riding mower , is pull the wheels off and put never seize on the axels. Do this and you will never have this problem. Most people don't do it .
Another cool video my friend. I know you don't mess with lawn tractors much anymore, so its a treat to see them here! Seeing this makes me glad I have garden tractors (Deere 318 and 445) with bolt on hubs instead of shaft mount! Whatever you do, I'll watch. I hope someday you decide to kill another pushmower though lol.
Thanks, I just like to mix things up a bit, and its helped a lot. I am actually starting to like working on them again but years ago it got stale because thats all I did. My Dayton has 5 lug rear wheels but everything else is shaft style. I am hoping to kill another pushmower as well I just gotta get one I don't like haha.
Did the same. The JD 318 is a REAL machine in comparison to the Craftsman. Gave up trying to pull the Craftsman's and just changed the tires while on the shafts.
Thank you! Great informative video. I have a Simplicity 560 snowblower that I bought used and now I need tube in both tires. I will use my Acetelyne torch to try this method.

Thanks a lot .. I watched you... started beating on the back of the hub... broke the retainer clip inside the transmission.... now I'm really screwed ...n Thanks a bunch.. i should have known better than watch shade tree mechanics on Fube Tube
Busted the spiral retaining ring off the axle shaft trying this exact method. Now I've gotta mow making only left hand turns or the axle slides out of the gear box 😄
I wrestled with mine and ended up getting behind the wheel close to center with a 2x2 piece of wood, hit it about 5 times with a 2 pound hammer and it popped right off. No torching !
I have the exact same mower and tried to do exactly what you did. The axle came out with the wheel. Still can't budge it. Got a follow up video for heavy-handed grease monleys with heavy hammers like me? I guess now I need to rebuild the axle too, or is it too far gone if it comes out like that?
Unfortunately the axle coming out is a problem that happens and I warned of that in the video and it has happened to me a few times. I don't have any rebuild videos but search up Lynols office he has a rebuild video on transaxles.
I know about mtd wheels. I have repaired the transaxle with one or both wheels still attached. Just put on blocks then slit the case. Most of the time the bushings ware out which give the gears more Clarence.
Very informative and entertaining! I was chuckling a bit while watching. A little censoring may have been needed for me doing this video.lol! Thanks for the video!
There are holes already in the rim to use a puller with. Heat the hub, quench with cold water and use the puller. If it doesn't move then use an air impact chisel with a flat end bit on the end of the puller. Always worked for me. Then put never seize on the axle when reassembling. Won't have a problem next time wheel has to come off. And, yes, you're right about possibly causing damage by beating on it with a big hammer.
Am dealing with a seized wheel on a 1988 Honda Harmony HT-R3009 riding mower. Had tried a couple methods seen on RUclips without success including PB Blaster over 2 days. Only have a propane torch but will try it and hope that works. Good video.
John Kohler I had one of those old 3009 Honda riders years ago, good mower but mine smoked bad on startup so I sold it while it was still running. Heat is the best option for removing stuck wheels, a propane torch should be enough to get it plenty hot. You might even try quenching the heat afterwards with cold water to make the axle contract a bit but don't get it on the rim. Heat expands Cold retracts.
Bent my rims and then the transaxle differential broke a year later from the beating. Wheels are still stuck on both my axles and I now need a trans. I had the double flat axle.
Everyone tries to heat the whole wheel boss. A mad old timer metalsmith once told me Its actually more effective to heat in a streight line over the keyway and expand it like a clam!!
A hand-held belt sander with 220 - 300 grit and rotate the shaft as you take off the rust will make a fast job; I just use a sheet of 220 grit washable sanding Cloth is great too and grip the shaft and rotate as you sand.
if you have an air chisel / air hammer gun use it would need a flat bit Pneumatic Air Hammer Bit use a propane solder torch to heat it up.. an air hammer should do the trick of getting it off .. think a cutting torch would be too much and using a puller, on the old MTD's try it can find a decent bit set for around or under $ 20.00
pro tip when ya get a new lawn mower first thing I do is take back wheels off and anti sezze the axles , cause its not a matter of if its got to come off its a matter of when.
I did exactly what you did, it still did not work! I ended up torching the rim off around the hub, I beat it so hard with a pipe and hammer the rim was toasted anyway. Than I surgically sliced the hub down the center without scoring the axle at 12 and 6 o'clock, it was a long way to get a wheel off!
Had to pop the shafts out the gearbox and damaged the c clip to get my shafts out. Then had to use 6 ton pressure in a press to push out the shaft from the wheel hub
Nice video makes me wish I had a torch. All i have is a propane torch maybe that will get it bot enough.... but thanks for the tips. I already broke a bolt in my harmonic balancer puller.
@@WEBBBASSIST9 I used a puller , PBblaster and a propane torch to get my MTD rear wheels off. I didn't need to get the hubs very hot. When I used the puller, I rapped the bolt that presses on the axle end, that helped a lot.
I collapsed a rim trying a press method before, I mentioned it in the video I think, and I ended up torching the remains of the rim off to find out the axle was completely rusted. I'm not saying the press off method is bad, but sometimes it doesn't work.
@@76hotrodF250 Well I have heavy chains and 6 ton jack and it still not moving, heated several times and bp blaster and liquid wrench. Any ideas short of a cutting torch which is my next thought after a couple days of soaking it with p oil.
@fussebd1952 you might could try a Map gas torch, pick those up at most hardware stores in plumbing section. Uses a yellow gas bottle and runs about 60 bucks. You might also try an air hammer/chisel tip or a home brew penatrator oil. Theres one that uses automatic transmission fluid and another liquid, can't remember.
Mine was given me...in bad repair. I built a puller that immediately bent the 3/8" ready bolt that was thru the wheel puller holes. Your video was the first one I watched. Ive fought that cotton-picking thing for 3 days! My intentiin is to remove all the wheels and have them all foam-filled, along with my wheel-barrow wheel and the garden 2 wheel buggy. That way they will never go flat nor wear out...at least in my lifetime! Tomarrow, I'll take the torch out there and throw the meat...heat to it...😜! What kind of spray did you say you use? Reckon would WD40 work or Kroil? Thanks for your video. You sound like a fun fellow to know...you've got a good since of humor...not glum like a lot of folks that are good mechanics. Thanks
Thanks for sharing your story. I am not a fan of the pullers for that reason exactly. I used PB Blaster, its a penatrator, Kroil might work though. Just be careful to not overheat the rim and warp it and when swinging blows just use good taps, too hard and you can break the snap ring holding in the axle and then send it flying out of the transaxle. Oh, and yeah I try to bring a little humor in my videos, so many make really boring cut and dry videos.
Update... I tried to replace all the Wheel bearings on a Yamaha Grizzly ATV. I removed and replaced 3 sets... Wanna guess which one I could not get off???
THANK YOU 76 HOTROD250 VIDEO I HAVE XR75 JOHN DEERE I HAVE SAME HIT WHEEL COUPLE HUGE PRY BAR BEHIND SOAK OIL KEYWAY AROUND TIRE DONT MOVE VIDEO VERY GOOD THANK YOU TIME TOOK SHOW HOW YOU DO IT
Hehe. I’ve done that before, instead of the wheel coming of, the axle came out of the transmission. Ya, then time to take the rear end out to fix that. I’ll stay with the puller.
Great vid! I have a new problem though after trying to get the tire and rim. Did the heating, the PB Blaster, the steel rod, and the sledgehammer. But instead of the wheel coming off the axel, the axel decided to pull out of the gearbox with the tire still stuck. I am pretty sure I can get the tire off the axel now by using my bearing press, but I don know if I have what it takes to mess with repairing a gearbox and trans-axle. I may be beyond my skill level now. Am I screwed? Or no big deal?
It unfortunately happens sometimes. Its really not to difficult to fix. Remove trans, remove the pulley from the top. Then remove the bolts holding trans together. Carefully pry the top off, sometimes they just pop off easy. Make sure to not rotate the trans in any way as you remove the top as it can cause parts to slide out of the grooves holding them in. Your axles are only held in with a retaining clip or 2. Some people refer to these as C-clips or E-clips. Just place your axle back into place with new clip(s) with gear on end of axle. Then just reverse order put it back together. There are videos online on how to do this. I don't have any up myself as I never made videos if it was already done many times. Best of luck.
quick tip, use an old toothbrush to apply the antiseize, you dont want that junk on your skin, i keep some ready in a ziplock bag with the Permatex tube. Bingo bango!
I mention this in video that its a risk, however I have yet to knock out an axle with the heat method, worse thing is I destroy a rim, which is not big deal. I have destroyed pullers and torn up rims with pullers. I will admit to not having tried a puller with heat. Video was made quite a while ago.
Hey guys, I had same problem on my Craftsman rider with rusted steel wheels on axle I used W/D 40 and P/B blaster and heated axle area with map gas tank, then I used my Air- hammer with mushroom flat head tool and vibrations knock it loose, now I'm going stop this problem, by adding grease fitting on back wheel hub, problem solved.
If you try this and the rim does not move within the first four hits stop. If you dont you will snap the trans axle bevel gear retainer rings you will notice that the wheel retainer clip will be to far out to retain the wheel. My shaft moved 3/4" had to split the case pull the shaft install new clips after pressing the bevel gear into the correct location.Best thing is cut the wheel off or take the mower to the shop they can install a tube or tire without taking the wheel off

Does anyone know what proper air should be put in front and back tires on a craftsman riding mower? I think its a 97,98 or 99 model.

Thank you sir.
Banging on the rim with a drift and hammer u risk pulling out the axle which will cause you a lot more work,
I mention this in video that its a risk, however I have yet to knock out an axle with the heat method, worse thing is I destroy a rim, which is not big deal. I have destroyed pullers and torn up rims with pullers. I will admit to not having tried a puller with heat. Video was made quite a while ago.
Just a great video- you’re no slouch😉
Hey guys, I had same problem on my Craftsman rider with rusted steel wheels on axle I used W/D 40 and P/B blaster and heated axle area with map gas tank, then I used my Air- hammer with mushroom flat head tool and vibrations knock it loose, now I'm going stop this problem, by adding grease fitting on back wheel hub, problem solved.
If you try this and the rim does not move within the first four hits stop. If you dont you will snap the trans axle bevel gear retainer rings you will notice that the wheel retainer clip will be to far out to retain the wheel. My shaft moved 3/4" had to split the case pull the shaft install new clips after pressing the bevel gear into the correct location.Best thing is cut the wheel off or take the mower to the shop they can install a tube or tire without taking the wheel off
*CUT the Tire, put a new one on... Better than sitting there all day for $32.00 :/*
Great job
WELL DONE !!!!!!!!!!
Coat the hub where it joins the drive motor with anti seize and you will never have that trouble.
Drive motor? Lol
Thanks bro!
thanks a lot. hope I will get mine off, will let u know.God bless
Did it work
