    Hi Tom! I've been laying low for a couple years since my second stroke, and have missed so much of your musical talents! I am having a rough time snapping back into the groove, but have not given up, my friend. Your performance here is exquisite, Tom! Truly a masterpiece reminiscent of all your musical gifts! Thank you for sharing this with us. I will share this with Betty Saylor and also with my granddaughter, Madison, who is studying several brass instruments including the Jupiter trumpet I gave her, and the French horn. Best wishes to you and your lovely wife! Denny (now living in Florida and loving it)

      Hi Denny, good to hear from you and I hope you are on the way to making a good recovery, I will look forward to more of your uploads ... I hope Madison sticks at her brass playing, it is a great hobby to have!! ... best wishes from Tom and Margaret:-D!!

    Parabéns Tom! Ficou muito bom. Existe muito pouco material sobre Melofone na internet e no RUclips em nível profissional, obrigado por postar os seus vídeos, eles mostram que o Melofone é um instrumento maravilhoso e muito versátil.

    I've played this concerto god knows how much (as any trumpet would understand). Even at 15, a quite refreshing change on the tenor horn!

    I don't know if this is a mellophone; the bell doesn't look quite big enough. Is it in the key of F or Eb? It might be an odd instrument called a Solo Horn - essentially a forward facing tenor horn - I've done a review of one previously.

    • @Nintendoman851
      @Nintendoman851 7 лет назад +4

      Sounds like it's an Eb instrument!

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад +2

      Spot on Nintendoman ... this one is normally in G but has been lowered to Eb using an extension.

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Trent and thanks for listening, your guess is as good as mine ... the brand is a Donald E Getzen and the bell is ten inches, same as my tenor (alto in USA) and is in the key of G but I am using an Eb slide lowering the pitch to what I'm used to hearing ... the intonation is terrible in G and just about tolerable in Eb!!

    • @TrentHamilton
      @TrentHamilton 7 лет назад +1

      Oh, in that case it'll be an American marching band instrument of some description. They used to all be in the key of G. I've done some various reviews of them. This could then be a simple mellophone, and the age of it explains the smaller than normal bell flare. Else it could be a marching alto horn or something like that.

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the info Trent ... not too sure what age it is ... I bought it on eBay from Germany around twelve years ago and doesn't get a lot of use.

    It's a G Mellophone used in Drum & Bugle Corps. Look slike DEG (Dynasty) make.

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  4 года назад

      Thanks for listening Simon, that's exactly what it is ... I'm using an 'Alto' horn mouthpiece, what would you use in Drum & Bugle Corps?

    • @Fryzers
      @Fryzers 4 года назад +1

      A "Mello 6v" was the one commonly used. I still have one and a mellophone similar to this.

    • @LawrenceStroman

      Interesting! I played an F Mellophone in college and used a iym, and curry 1htf in marching band. They sound decent for a section of mellophones but solo play the tone was sufficient. With the alto horn piece the tone is great!

  • @BillC518

    I have an instrument similar to this, made by Willson and marketed by DEG Music Products. They referred to it as a marching alto french horn. It's essentially a mellophone with a flugelhorn size bell. It's pitched in F, but I have a slide extension that lowers it to Eb. I play it with an alto horn mouthpiece. I rewrote a copy of Hadyn's trumpet concerto that was intended for Bb trumpet, to be played on a Eb instrument. Hearing this makes me want to get the horn out again and practice it again!

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  6 лет назад

      Thanks for listening Bill, it sounds like a similar instrument to yours ... this one is pitched in G but the bell has the same ten inch diameter as my alto horn ... and I also use my alto horn mouthpiece ... I think someone has built this instrument up from the spare parts bin!

  • @jomarluke

    A mello in G? So from drum corps? What brand is it? I've got a French horn in G and a few others, but they don't sound like that!

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад

      Hi there Jomarluke and thanks for listening ... the instrument is a Donald E Getzen and pitched in G ... in this recording I am using an alternative tuning slide, lowering the pitch to Eb.

      My granddaughter, Madison, plays one of these horns in the h.s. marching band in Virginia. She is REALLY good! I tried sharing your you tube video with her, however, you tube wouldn't allow it. Your piece is masterfully played, buddy!

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад

      Hi again ... it was in the case when I bought it on eBay ... it is just a longer tuning slide with a bend in it.

  • @sceu25
    @sceu25 Год назад

    Strange… It’s not a Mellophone. This looks like a DEG III Alto Bugle in G, but the fingerings you play appear to be in Eb. Did you create an extension slide for it to be in Eb?

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  Год назад

      Hi Simeon, thanks for listening ... well spotted ... that's exactly what it is, DEG in G and it came with an alternative extension slide lowering the pitch to Eb 🙏🙏🙏

    I am wondering, what is the difference between the shank size of the tenor horn mouthpiece and a trumpet's mouthpiece? Thank you, and stellar job.

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  6 лет назад

      Hi there Kyle J.H. and thank you for listening ..... the lead pipe of both instruments measures about the same ... 11.84 mm or 0.46 inches ... although the trumpet and tenor horn mouthpieces are designed for their respective instruments the shank sizes are more less identical ... Best wishes from Tom :-D!!

    • @TomsTenorHorn

      Hi Minizip ... this one is in the key of 'G' with an extended tuning slide lowering it to Eb and yes I am using an Alliance TH2A mouthpiece.

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for listening Ashton, well spotted! ... this instrument is usually pitched in 'G' and has an Eb extension for the recording ... lowering it to a brass band 'Alto' or 'Tenor' Horn pitch.

  • @Gonen_Orbach
    @Gonen_Orbach 7 лет назад +1

    I'm not sure that that's a mellophone... I used to play the mellophone and it uses a French horn mouthpiece. I don't know what this instrument is though...

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Gonen ... thanks for your input ...I use an Eb Tenor (Alto) Horn mouthpiece but I think a French Horn or even a Trumpet mouthpiece would also fit as the lead pipe is around 12mm.

    • @Gonen_Orbach

    Eb marching mellophone

    • @TomsTenorHorn

      @@paulmullen2620 Hi Paul, mine came from an eBay seller in Germany ... not sure if this instrument is more popular in mainland Europe ... possibly one of the instrument repairers could manufacture an extension.
