hi tim as a phonograph collector i'm well aware of these the first ones came from japan somwhere in the 1950s it was a little tin bus with a windup motor with a plasic cone inside with a steel needle attached i'm not sure if it went round at 78-45 or 33 rpm i'm sure it would do quite some damage to a vinyl record the second one that came out was a electric driven one in the shape of a VW bus somwhere in the 60s and 70s with a pick-up element and a saphire needle going round at 33 rpm the mini you have is the 3rd incarnation next to gramophones and phonographs i collect phonographic toys dolls are the most common the first ones with a little cylinder and the later ones with a little disc record many other forms are known like.. talking greeting cards that you had to fold in a certain way with a record you had to turn by hand also plasic strips that had ribbles that if you scratched it with your thumbnail would magically say f.i. happy birthday there are many talking toys like.. talking puzzles, talking cars, talking action figures, talking view masters, talking clocks, talking spinning tops, and so on and on all with a recording using grooves instead of the modern chip and piezzo element
Tim this is the weirdest video ever! My sister had a VW camper in the 70s that played records the same as yours. The day you uploaded this I was telling my son about it. I just think it's the strangest coincidence that I was talking about these for the first time in 40 odd years the same day!I will show him this video later 😀
These little novelties have been around since the 80s and right now I'm watching Shark Tank and a dude just sold this to Robert Herjavec as his own invention! Oh, he did put a bluetooth transmitter in it, but I think that's a really obvious update.
This mini-mini-cooper has .09HP at 45 RPMs, & red-lines at 78 RPMs. Interior: all vinyl. It's the least reliable new car of this decade... in fact, in that regard... it holds the record. I also read in the comments that someone heard that these things can damage records.
I don't think it's a terrible sin to show off the same toy twice in over seven years. It's OK to post these without warning us that it's an "HD reshoot". It's fine.
Ouch Ouch Ouch Ouch Ouch Ouch Is how I felt throughout this. Maybie I have a Vinyl record somewhere in my ancestry ! The whole weight of the car resting on a single one of those tiny tiny ridges at any time just hurts me so bad !
***** "a wireless charging plate to help reduce weight of the car" Such a system would make it heavier than using a cable. How would the car over really ? No it's really hard to make this design work properly and still be small. Compact viny readers do exist though, but if you really did what you're talking about, get rid of the speakers inside the car, make it use a jack to connect to a proper baffle. Use the weight relief to improve the electronics, use a tube amplifier on the car for example.
lol, "came out about thirty years ago"... sorry Tim, seems time is flying a bit faster than you think: about 30 years ago would place that record firmly in the 80s... that record is at the very least 50 years old.
At first I thought the record was playing backwards - that, perhaps, the British cut their records to spin counter-clockwise rather than clockwise just like how they love to drive on the wrong side of the road. Then I realized the record wasn't moving and the car was going in the correct direction.
If you listen closely, you can hear the record screaming in pain
+TheEpongeMan
That's just the audience laughing.
+TheEpongeMan its just a yawn its just a bit TIRED
GET IT
TTTTTTTTTTTTTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
+Toke Balls What
cause like the tires from the car usually scatch it and stufff
Toke Balls Oh.
0:49 bruh. (When he starts the car on the vinyl, it sounded like it said BRUH)
It does
Edit: I meant It not I

Yep, this is a Grand Illusions video alright.
One of my friends parents had an old Voltswagon "Hippie-Bus" version from when these first came out. It was pretty cool!

sweet piece of engineering, respect to the design guys
I heard that these can damage records. They are really cool though.
+Sinister Shrink yes, they do damage records because of the car wheels spinning on the disk still it's pretty cool
+teamfortresswiki it seems surprising that such small plasticky wheels would cause any damage to the record
Guilherme C. records are very fragile, even your fingerprints can ruin them (not kidding)
everything damages a record.
+Sinister Shrink
Vinyl is kinda soft material.
R.I.P. your favorite comedian record
should be called Record Ruiner instead.
Vinyl killer
It's like watching a dog walking on two legs. One is not surprised it isn't done well, one is surprised it is done at all. :)

the mini you have is the 3rd incarnation
next to gramophones and phonographs i collect phonographic toys dolls are the most common the first ones with a little cylinder and the later ones with a little disc record
many other forms are known like.. talking greeting cards that you had to fold in a certain way with a record you had to turn by hand
also plasic strips that had ribbles that if you scratched it with your thumbnail would magically say f.i. happy birthday

HD endless spring please!
Love seeing Tim...Heh
That's pretty awesome. Record will probably get messed up, but still awesome.
I just loved howd video started with new mini clubman commercial
Tim is a legend.

I've seen a similar one with a VW Bus.
Why not a Opel Rekord?
OMG! Where may I buy one of these beauties??
What is that black disc thingy?
do they still make them?
HOLY SHIT :D Where do you find this stuff? It's funny seeing a car driving around a record and it's amazing it plays :D
This mini-mini-cooper has .09HP at 45 RPMs, & red-lines at 78 RPMs. Interior: all vinyl. It's the least reliable new car of this decade... in fact, in that regard... it holds the record.

Tim reminds me of Owl from Winnie the Pooh so much. :)
1:45 for "Heh"
maybe if the wheels were rubbery-er then they wouldnt mess up the record as bad, I assume the wheels are hard plastic
Never in my life would I play my records with something like that - they are just too valuable for me!
is there a CD version of this?
that would actually be a cool technical challenge, would probably involve a lot of buffering
I first saw that stuff in the "Hen, is his wife" animation short movie. I didn't thought it really exists. :O
" There is a French widow in every room - affording delightful prospects "
You must be as old as me 8-)
dope man
that's pretty amazing
I heard these can damage the records.
tim, what is the name of the comedian you mentioned
Gerard Hoffnung. I'm not quite sure why you didn't just replay the video to find out...
Don't forget to set the right VTF, VTA and Anti-Skip inmediatelly after you acquire this turncar player.
was expecting tim to blast up some zeppelin
A guy on Shark Tank just sold his prototype of this remodeled version he named RokBlok for $500,000 to Robert saying it was his invention!
And Techmoan on YT tested it.
It's crap.
was searching for this comment xD

love all your videos defiantly subscribing:)
What a neat gimmick. Hopefully it's not too rough on the record.
i wouldnt trust this on any of my records

That demonic laughter...
Somewhere in Liverpool, someone is crying.
That's awesome as hell. o.o
They need to make a "European Vacation" version of the Record Runner. (Big Ben. Parliament.)
If it weighs a lot, kiss the records grooves goodbye...
They'll receive wear over a lifetime of play anyway

+True Tech indeed, i'm sure this design could be improved if vinyl still was the norm!

sad that things that go round the record make those odd flanging effects
I once did this with a piece of film 0.O

wow

All of these comments about the potential for this to damage records are starting to sound like a broken record.
This Rokblok looks really good!
Not really, just kidding.

don't mind me, i'm only here for 1:44
Uhm... aren't they known for ruining records?
Decca ;)
Ok ...

I can offer you a commodious chamber.
While it's cute, I don't think it's advised to use this over a proper player.
Techmoan already did a review on one of these and proved that it damages your records beyond repair.
thats creepy as hell
oh man, putting your fingers all over the vinyl is making me cringe
neet
It totally ruins the record tho
wotttttt
nope nope nope
do they still make them?
