  • Scott Thomas with Freedom Hill Coffee Roasters has been a major motivation for me over the past few months. I remember sitting in the truck at my work's parking lot about 2 years ago listening to Scott tell me about his dream of starting a coffee roastery. I provided what little info I knew at the time and then off he went. Fast forward 2 years and he has a 10kg roaster in a 10,000 sqft facility and employees. His story is inspiring to me because it just goes to show that if you have the mindset and willpower to make a dream come true then all it takes is a belief in yourself and consistent daily action to make it a reality.
Thanks so much for coming on the show Scott.

Thanks for creating content that is so useful. It acts as a beacon of light for those of us on the same journey! I got a little smile on my face when I heard him mention Carl Jung and his idea of “Circumambulation”.

No problem Coby! To be fair I benefit a lot from these conversations too. It’s such a great way to learn more about exactly what I’m trying to do. I figure the least I can do is just share it with everyone else and hopefully we can all reach our goals. Hope all has been well brother and thanks so much for tuning in!

Scott is awesome. I recently started hobby roasting late last year on a popper. Few weeks ago I got a Huky. Been charging 300 grams and recently started doing 400 grams, did a few charge temps at 360f my last roast was a 300f charge . Been focusing on honey process, got some la laja honey process I like a lot. Last batch i dropped around 430f so gotta play with it some more. Using artisan. I can't imagine 2x my mistakes on a bigger roaster hahahaha. Great interview. I got a lot of respect for risk takers.

Heck ya! I bet that Huky is a nice step up. The roasting journey is fun especially in the beginning. Scott definitely took a huge chance and speaking with him offline it definitely is paying off. Def an inspiration for me as well. Thanks so much for watching buddy and enjoy the roasting journey!

Best video Rob! I did the same, quit corporate America and went in feet first. I don’t believe in business plans and never borrowed a dime. Built the biz as I sold product. Being a single parent was the only road block as working hours but managed through it. Lost during the pandemic but still open for business. If you want it bad enough there are ways without making it happen if you are willing to gamble. When I got into the roasting business nobody told you anything. Schools to me were just money makers for the host and forums would just make you depressed as advice was so different and untrue. A quality product will make you grow.

@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I started off with a roaster, scale, some bags and a Mahlkonig grinder and built from there. If I was in your mindset I would be roasting and selling to local coffee shops and spending a Saturday at farmers markets and putting the profit back into equipment. I use to sell a high quality flavored coffee using flavoring oils that were natural. Got beat up by the roasters who were coffee snobs and remarked I was only in for the money. Yup sure am was my reply. I averaged 60 lbs of flavored coffee a week at 16.00 per lb. why turn away cash. It’s like going into a high end steak house and ordering a Wagyu steak well done and the chef refusing to cook it. Still makes the same money just so happens taste buds are different. If you are ever in Boston, reach out!
