great because everyone thinks he's such a bad person then when he sings this song u realize hes not so bad at all, brilliant scene deff. my favorite thanks for adding it.
I was playing this tonight on my new Fender Accoustic Guitar My beautiful lady got me for xmas. When I finished, the phone rang. It was my father telling me that Gram just passed away in the hospital at 97 yrs old. Although I weep, and it is our loss, comfort comes in the thought that she suffers no more and is with the good lord! Rest in peace Gram, we all miss you already!
I saw this movie 30 years ago and the only scene I remember is this one. It put a lump in my throat then as it does now. His beautiful voice stole that movie!
I still can't watch this without tearing-up. He Died on my b-day,I was only 4 y/o. Absolutely beautiful voice. It's too bad we didn't get a studio version.
just watching the wanders with Erland van Lidth in it. amazed to read he actually sang this song. just goes to show you dont have to be beautiful like most require these days to be a singer to make beautiful music. a sad shame people in the music business go for looks more than singing ability now RIP grossburger
definitely one of my favorite films of all time, and i didnt realise grossberger actually sung this part himself till i looked it up today, im well impressed, its so beautiful
This actor should have been a singer. Maybe he didn't get a break. His voice has a haunting sound that could have been a top seller with the write music. I hope he's still singing, and would like to hear more from him.
This man, Erland van Lidth, aka: Grossburger, has a voice unmatched for this song, Down in the Valley. From having worked in a County Jail, the noise factor made by inmates hollering back and forth at each other 24 hours a day, would have drowned out his beautiful voice. I noticed the movie prison had no noise whatsoever, and Grossburger's voice came through. I just wish that inmates behaved as in the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. They behaved because of severe repercussions forthcoming following a misbehavior incident. Unbelievable what prison staff have to put up with out of the. 2024 inmates
when this film was made there was kind of a sound engineer/recording technitian strike/dispute going on. so while they could not record him singing it "live" on set they had to use a recording of him singing it prior to film recording.BUT it IS him singing it just not live on set.
According to Wikipedia: "His Grossberger role in Stir Crazy required the character to sing as well (though never speaking); however, a studio strike prevented his participation in the sound editing and the voice was actually provided by another singer." Too bad, as he was an opera singer.
I wonder if there's a soundtrack to this movie, and if so where to get that cd? I've looked on the net but all deadends. This is one of the most beautiful version of this song ever made. This one falls into the legends with songs like Danny Boy and Tir na Noir.
(imdb / Erland Van Lidth / trivia): "His actual voice wasn't used for the song, 'Down in the Valley', in the film. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 1980, he wasn't able to record the song himself, so they used the pre-recorded track to which he had sung the song during the filming in the final print of the movie." Some of this is confusing. Translation: EVL was singing at the filming, but along with a track that included the track's original vocal, to get a precise lip-sych. "His actual voice wasn't used...he wasn't able to record the song himself." The singer on the track, uncredited on the film: Dorian Holley, best known as a backup singer for Michael Jackson in 1987, but an unknown 24year-old when the film was made. (EVL was a bass-baritone, this performance in the tenor range.)
i just finished watching this for like the 1000th 2 minutes ago time and this scene always brings me to tears so sad......everyone in that cell is dead except the brother who plays the homosexual
There's an entire black market of this MP3 happening (lol) on the message board to Erland's IMDb page. Just look for the thread titled "stir crazy". However, let it be known this is NOT him singing. People seem to want to forget that he was a bass-baritone. Still, nice song.
I suspected the singing part was dubbed by another vocalist. Apart from the lip synch being slightly out this performer was a bass baritone, the voice here is closer to a tenor. In The Running Man he sang a bit, I don't know if that was his own voice.
I've just come up with a new game! I call it ' Williams Or Wilder'. Think of a film in which either Robin or Gene has been in, and decide if the other would do a better job if cast in that film. This idea may grow, it may flounder, but if it works I won't make any money! Bastards! Question 1: Robin Williams as Willy Wonka?
