Richard Pryor is not just a funny comedian but a writer even Shakespeare would love. Tragedy and comedy were the forte of both men. 🤔
Seen with eyes that saw this interview in 77, Richard (who i love) seemed to be in a sincerely ambitious and productive pre-coke-problems moment (ie perhaps he hadnt discovered free-basing yet), but was still so uncomfortably insecure and overly defensive...Chevy was being quite complmentary and Johnny as almost always was trying to make him comfortable...
There was tension and a lot of it through the interview. Chase was jabbing Prior but came off insincere and kinda prickish. Carson had a late night white audience and larger realities we see here and now today are playing heavily in Priors demeanor a reality that black people have never lived without. That's what's seen from here.
Chase got pissed at that "I don't like Chevy" from Pryor, the moment he called Pryor's son a "hooker", the tension went even higher! Pryor wasn't the only comedian that disliked Chevy Chase...

Three great entertainers -- Chase, Carson and Pryor -- and Pryor is absolutely in a different universe. The contrast shows how brilliant Pryor was.
A different universe with Marlon Brando mounting him like a hooker
Pryor is THE greatest comedian to ever live!!!
Fibber!
Live on the Sunset Strip is the greatest stand-up performance ever!
It's best to not exaggerate. The value of comedy is the variety of it. Not that one is best. Though Pryor is my favorite.
For you
pulling slides out of his pocket....genius comedy
Cute, but not genius.
"genius" is a bit much
Genius ..when you think about it. To know you can get away with that on american tv back then..on a show like Carson's..I could see the actual humour itself not being genius level..but couple it with the daring ro know what buttons to push and how to push them in that environment and not go pear shaped..well.
More like searching desperately for a way
out of a very bad situation.
It was written all over Pryor's face.
Chevy and Richard did innovative work when Richard first hosted SNL. Chevy could roll with anything in his prime.
that was a long long long long long long long long long time ago.
@@kaljic1 1977. I think Star Wars had just premiered when this first aired 46 years ago!
@@kaljic1 So what? Chevy achieved far more than you ever will in your prime, friend :)
"Dead honky!"
Saw that skit it when it first aired and still laugh at it to this day.
Paul Mooney wrote that skit
Pryor was effortlessly funny.
What still amazes me is that Pryor's stand up was so nasty and dirty, but he could switch to clean and be just as funny.
Johnny knew what he was talking about. His last old lady tried taking him for millions. Eddie Murphy nailed it, I want half Eddie lol!
Eddieee, I need to talk to you!
What have you done for me lateleeee?
Chevy and Richard are two different comedians yet they’re both funny in their own right. But Richard is the King Of Comedy hands down !
you got that right, love chevy in his movies but nobody comes close to pryor or fox in there stand up, they were the goats and always will be.
Richard Pryor was the best man. I really miss that cat.
Don’t get too emotional, damn
Post the show when Steve Martin was the host and Chevy was the guest please.
Richard asked “What’d you say?” When Chevy said something smart. Chevy: “I didn’t say anything, man.” Richard would’ve verbally eviscerated him😅😆😂
no... it was part of the bit.. they were working it..
@@morelife6508 you people say anything 🙄
@@blackbookt.vchannel7616 stop bringing race into everything... it sounds pathetic.
@@blackbookt.vchannel7616what’s you people mean.
@@morelife6508No, Richard and Chevy really didn't like each other. There was no "bit" there.
Fun fact: Chevy once interviewed Richards for a janitorial job and practiced a word association. It’s on camera. Look it up.
It was a SNL skit.... Richard was the SNL host that night.
I thought of that immediately... "DEAD honky!"
Richard Pryor a very funny and insightful man..
Idk why people are going in on Chevy, he’s just as funny, just as talented. Christmas vacation is one of my favorites. If some people don’t find him funny that doesn’t mean he isn’t, just isn’t for you, but don’t dog the man. He is a legend as well.
Richard Pryor was such a genius, a beautiful man, so full of love and fun
"I don't like Chevy" I don't think he was joking when he said that
Him and everyone who appeared on Saturday Night Live.
Chevy upset everyone on SNL. They chanted "We hate Chevy Chase" at a reunion.
I know right, there's a lot of humor in the truth.
He wasnt joking and was mean and unclassy!
@@maggiesace389 Chevy's a notorious a**hole and a bully behind cameras, nothing's wrong with rejecting him.
Both are guys who don’t take any poo from anyone. Glad they didn’t start fighting.
It is impressive and touching how Pryor was able to make elegant jokes about repulsive racist demeanors and events. His quick wit was very impressive too. RIP.

Do you know why, though?

Crying about his hardships while being a well paid celebrity. It never ends, oh what a pity 😢 🎻
@@Spooky_515 Anyone old enough understands that being well paid does not resolve all your problems.
"Great on assists (syst)." "He had one on his knee." 😂😂😂
Part me thinks Pryor wasn't joking about that "I don't like Chevy" comment.
Oh, it was not a joke. Chevy rubbed people the wrong way and still does.
I used to stay up late and watch Johnny on my black & white Quasar TV. I'd put a towel on the floor covering the crack under my door so my parents wouldn't bust me. A great time to be a teenager.
Richard was 1 in a trillion.
1 in a gagillion.
He was on fiyah and he got that soul glo sucka
Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor were like the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups of comedy, two great tastes that taste great together!
Classic!!!
KI still have 100s of slides from my childhood.
The good old days of late night comedy. You never knew what was going to happen.
Raw and unscripted. Now, it's pretty much by the numbers and dull. The talent is just on to push a product.
Pryor was king! He was very intelligent and I’m glad that he came along.
Carson carried late night T.V. for 20 years. .... created it. he managed to laugh off a lot, but he was smart and the real-deal.
In all my life since I first saw Richard Pryor I've said he's the funniest man I've seen or heard or read. I like many comedians and some at the top of the profession. But if I can only appreciate one Richard it is.
It started when I was going through an older friends record collection. I wore that record and others out and my friend never ask it back. True friend, though eventually I did return it. I had those albums completely memorized and just thinking of them has always made me smile and laugh.
Richard Pryor is not just a funny comedian but a writer even Shakespeare would love. Tragedy and comedy were the forte of both men. 🤔
You could cut the tension with a knife between the three of them.
I love those chairs!
The fact that they got high together before the show and mix in inside jokes makes this even more funny.
How is that a fact?
@@yourmother4898 John Witherspoon was part of Richards entourage and has spoke about it in interviews.
Pryor really seemed like interviews are not his fav. RIP to that genius.
What's wrong with you eyes , Pryor was definitely exposing the systemic racism in Hollywood.
@@citizenenak dont think it was that serious.. they were working a bit.. impromptu..
Chase got pissed at that "I don't like Chevy" from Pryor, the moment he called Pryor's son a "hooker", the tension went even higher! Chase was always a non sincere piece a sh*t, and Pryor at the other hand was always a down to earth dude that would tell you exactly how he felt about you! Pryor wasn't the only comedian that disliked Chevy Chase...
Pryor great at comedy disaster in relationships. In the scheme of things it’s better the other way around
The greatest of all time. Richard's brain worked comedy like no one else ever did.
I was playing in Doc's band that night.
Chevy Chase should have kept quiet and let Pryor have his spot with Johnny.
When the camera cut for commercials, a person could truly see Pryor didn't like Chase.
What do you play? Are you still on the scene these days?
I’m sure Chevy cried himself to sleep over it
Golden years
I would loved to have seen Rickles and Pryor together on Carson
Richard Pryor was a comedic genius.
