  • Nikon D7100 User Guide: Modern DSLR's have so many buttons, dials and functions that it can be difficult to get an idea of what they all do. Photographer Dave Vickers goes through all of the functions on the Nikon D7100 and explains what they are for. Many of the functions will be the same for other Nikon models as well.

Thank you so much for the vidoes, I am a senior citizen fit and active, and bought my D7100 last year, been reading learning etc, I am not a patient reader, IE going back and forth in a manual, and get fed up with it, so just play with settings, and learn that way, but these videos have thrown a whole new meaning to my camera, and I have learned so sos much, so a massive big thank you.

Wanted to thank you for taking the time to put these together. I've been shooting with my D7100 for almost two years now, and despite having made several efforts to wade through the user's manual, I simply couldn't get my head around all the various controls. The straightforward and simple explanations in your videos have finally filled in all those gaps in my understanding of my camera, and I'm already shooting greatly improved photos. Honestly can't thank you enough.

What can I say, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for putting this together!! My father was a professional photographer. He shot a lot of 35mm back in the 60s and 70s. He taught me the basics of shot composition, depth of field, focusing, lens selection, and lighting. Then, he gave me a camera and said, "Go out and start shooting." That was in the 1980s (I have his old Olympus OM-2N w/the attachable autowinder in my closet now!). I've shot an awful lot of film even up to the late 80s/early 90s. I gave up shooting for about 10 years because my old Nikon FG-20 and Ricoh T-3 cameras didn't work anymore (the internal light meters broke). Parts were hard to find and they were too expensive to fix on our limited budget, so I put them away. Years later, in 2007/2008, my wife wanted photos of our boys before they got too much older. We couldn't afford the D-90 that I wanted ($1,200 U.S.), so we settled on the D-40X for $650 U.S...a good little camera that I still have. I then built a nice little kit around it. I've acquired the Speedlight 600 flash unit, a 55-200mm zoom, a 70-300mm zoom, and a wide angle lens. I've shot thousands of exposures with it, and it still works quite nicely. I'd been wanting to upgrade for quite some time, but couldn't afford anything good, so I soldiered on with the D-40X. But, then about 10 days ago, our military base exchange had the D-7100 on sale for an unbeatable price because they wanted to move out the last of their stock. I convinced my Mrs. to let us buy it (Happy Father's Day!). Excitedly, I pulled it out of the box and started setting it up. As I was reading the manual, I quickly discovered how much I didn't know about digital photography. Holy crap, this thing has a lot of features that I'm either not aware of or don't know if I'll ever use! One thing's for sure, though. These tutorials will definitely help. I look forward to shooting some superior quality images in the future!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for creating this video series. It is very difficult for me to READ & then APPLY TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS. My learning curve has been reduced drastically. I previously owned a Nikon D80. I thought the transition to my D7100 would be easy......until I scrolled thru the menu! TECHNOLOGY SURE HAS CHANGED!!! Your straight forwardness, & simple explanations have made it easier to memorize the functions & menu settings previously not available on my outdated camera.-which were pretty overwhelming.
Thank you for saving me hours of "studying" which in turn has allowed me to be more creative with my photography! :)

This is a really fantastic review tutorial and I can’t thank you enough for the time and effort you put into this series. I only recently pulled out my old D7100 after a lot of medical interventions. I am now into my 3rd spinal surgery recovery period and far more disabled than I ever imagined. My travel is via a 4 wheeled rollator which enables me to walk my dog to the creek 2 or 3 times a day. He thought it strange that I was shooting Thunder Clouds but tolerated it. Photography has lifted me up and out of the Fog I was in. I can now enjoy that fog again and find myself carrying either The D700 or D7100 everywhere. They were both Flagship cameras in there day and for me they remain so. Thank you so much for all of your help with this detailed review. Brad Girod

"Thank you" very much!!! Just purchased a D7200. Have seen tutorials that explained D7100/D7200. Purchased a camera that I knew was over my head but hope to grow into with learning. Most tutorials confused me more than helped. There was an assumption that the viewer had photography know how. I'm an old film guy getting back into photography. A lot has changed and the cameras more complicated. I thought having a simple grasp of the exposure triangle was all you needed to know. Wow! Was I wrong! I've realized that digital photography is much more amazing than it was in the film era. However, I've also realized that I have a tremendous amount of learning to do. THANK YOU for doing a teaching video that's designed for the complete novice who has a desire to learn. TRULY APPRECIATED! And, I just subscribed.

Hi Dave thanks for the tutorial it was great to use the camera and follow the instructions live rather than reading the manual which can be difficult to read then put into practise. I've never used most of the options available instead relying on auto mode - point and shoot. Even a simple experiment with the ev compensation i can see results immediately and will now start to use my camera more creatively. I'm off to the Farne Islands at the end of the month so looking forward to putting what i've learnt from your tutorial. The pace of the tutorial was just right and i was able to pause, experiment and go back over anything not understood. Took a while to figure that it needs to be in manual mode but i sussed it anyway. Look forward to watching more from your channel. Farne Islands - Puffin - Nuffin ! Here we come. Cheers Dave.
