In the Russian-language segment of RUclips there is an author Arkady Shapoval (channel "Радожива"), who considers the D40 his favorite camera. During his life, he took millions of shots and owned an entire army of cameras and lenses. Of course, he works commercially with the help of modern technology, but he calls the D40 “the photographer’s manifesto” - because it limits the capabilities and comfort of the photographer, forcing him to grow in the desire to get a valuable shot. If you can take a photo with a D40, working with any other technique will take your performance to a new level. We have a saying: Hard to learn - easy to fight)
I love this mindset. A big part of why I enjoy using older cameras apart from me being a nerd, is it’s a way to keep pushing myself beyond all the modern fancy features of newer cameras and still get good images. Thanks for watching and recommending that channel, I’ll be sure to take a look!
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I got it a little mixed up, the channel is called “Аркадий Шаповал”, and "Радожива" is his website with articles about all kinds of photographic equipment from previous years, as well as vintage Soviet lenses. There you can see many of his photos
The seal scene was the best... I cant get enough of it. I've never seen a seal in real life especially not such a beuatiful one. I need an hour long video of them next time 😍😍😍
Believe it or not that was perhaps the 5th take and I only spotted the seal on that one. Until I got home and reviewed the footage I didn't know if it had been there the whole time or arrived between takes 😂 We get a lot of seals on the coast here. Just a little bit South of here, there's a nature reserve where they go between October and December to have their pups😊
@@DavidFlowerOfficial so sweet I watched your friend's video of that day as well. Cant get enough of that beautiful seal. Yeah, in germany at the northern sea there are seals as well but unfortunately I dont live near there :/
Great video David, and nice to see someone concentrating on the shot rather than the gear for a change. Gear is fun, gear is interesting, we all like our gear, but what really matters is the shot. I bet it was fun using the old D40 again - I haven't been using my Nikons much in the last year - no paid shoots so no incentive to carry the REALLY heavy stuff around - mind you, my mirrorless bag is starting to get overweight with all the vintage lenses I'm stuffing into it! And whoopie, a real comment, not a spambot type comment with a dodgy link - sort it out RUclips/Google!!!
Haha, yeah, the spambots were on this one within minutes of it going live🤣 Using cameras like the d40 both takes away all of the extra fluff we get in modern cameras and brings it back to basics, I mean this thing doesn't even have live view lol, but it also shows just how refined modern cameras are. Pre Sony I was using a Nikon d800 for most of my work and sigma art lenses. My back and knees thank me everyday for dropping all that camera weight😂
@@DavidFlowerOfficial The spambots always seem to do that - kind of predictable behaviour that you'd think RUclips's automated spam detection would spot. I've never used live view that much, it always seemed a bit clunky (I'd have probably liked it more if I'd bothered to use it more!!!), but it did have it's uses, particularly when using a tilt and shift lens. The tiny screen on the back of the older cameras does remind you how good the new cameras are, although I hate touch screens - I'm always randomly selecting a weird setting with my nose or something - I want buttons, lots of them!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I never used live view until switching from DSLR and being spoilt with zoom focusing, focus peaking and all that fancy business, not to mention the video side of things. As you may have noticed from the videos, I have a fairly substantial snout😂 so touch screens are annoying which is why I really like the range finder style bodies of the Sony apsc cameras😁👍
Yeah, I don't think we'll be seeing new DSLRs from any of the major companies (although Pentax did just release a new apsc DSLR🤦), but they're still great cameras. I loved my Nikon d800, but I don't regret switching to Sony👍
